  • PS6 Clocks In at 40TFlops, Xbox Helix at 56TFlops — 5ch: ‘If It’s $999, PS Wins’

KeplerL2, a leaker known for high reliability, has posted new information about the GPU performance of the next-generation consoles. According to the leak, the PS6 (codename Orion) will deliver 40TFlops while Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix (codename Magnus), will hit 56TFlops — and both designs are reportedly finalized and have completed “tape-out,” the pre-mass-production stage. The thread was divided over the performance jump from the current generation, price predictions based on the PS5 Pro’s $899 (¥138,000) launch price, and just how much this power gap will actually affect real-world sales.

    PS6: 40TFlops
    Xbox Project Helix: 56TFlops
Both have already taped out (specs locked, pre-production stage)
    4AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:43
If this is true, that's a pretty big gap.

    Re: #4
Nah, not really — it's only a bit more of a gap than PS5 vs. Series X this generation.
    5AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:43
PS6 can probably pull off $999, but the crap-box (Xbox) is locked in at $2000 for sure.
    PS wins again ✌

    $999… that'd be ¥169,980 (tax included), huh.
    79AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:31
    Re: #43
Just the manufacturing cost alone looks like it'll hit $999. If they can't cut the specs anymore, I'd bet on $1500 / around ¥200,000.
    103AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:41
I keep seeing these 'please be cheap' wishful-thinking posts (lit. 'maiden's prayer'), but
the PS5 Pro was $899 / ¥138,000, so it's guaranteed to be at least that much.

Re: #43 sounds realistic — even a slightly discounted Japan-market version probably won't come in under ¥100,000.
    6AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:44
If they've taped out, that means both companies have already placed their orders with TSMC.
They're seriously going to launch next year braced for a flop, huh.

I guess the thinking is they can just release another Pro model later depending on how things go. They already know people will buy it even if it's expensive.

    Probably ¥200,000 and ¥300,000.
They'll keep selling the current-gen consoles alongside them for a while.

    Re: #10
There's a rumor that Microsoft's console might tighten integration with Windows PC and let you use Steam (i.e., play PC games on the Xbox itself), right?
If that happens, pricing it like a gaming PC would actually make sense.

If PlayStation doesn't steer in that direction too, the 'muh specs' crowd can argue all they want — they'll never win,
since it'll be a fundamentally different price category of product.

This time it's close to the relationship between the RX 9070XT and the 9700.

    32AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:00
    Re: #23
It'll cost more in proportion to the die size, but PS6's Orion is monolithic while Helix's Magnus is chiplet-based, so Helix actually has better production yields/efficiency.

Either way, compared to today's memory and SSD prices, it's basically a rounding error.
    35AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:02
    Re: #23
For consumer graphics cards, that'd be about a ¥30,000–50,000 difference.
But since consoles are sold right at the edge of cost, it'll probably only be a ¥10,000–20,000 gap.
    29AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:57
If the Xbox ends up notably more expensive and more powerful, would any companies actually make games exclusive to it?
    51AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:10
    Re: #29
That's literally the job of first-party studios.
That said, since Microsoft is pushing to make PC games run on Helix too, it probably won't cost as much as making true console-exclusive games.

PCs are only getting more expensive going forward, so if I can play PC games on it too, I figure I'll just get Helix for gaming and a cheap laptop for everything else on PC.
    34AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:02
    PS4 to PS5 was a 5.5x jump in FLOPS.

Honestly, that's genuinely fine with me.
I'd be satisfied with something just a notch above PS5's graphics mode running at 60fps — I'd rather they lower the power even more and make it cheaper.
    36AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:03

    Re: #81
Unfortunately, at these specs Xbox will be doing 4K while PS6 is stuck at WQHD lol

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Tape-out” refers to the stage where a chip’s design data is finalized and the manufacturing plant (foundry) can be ordered to produce the masks for mass production; because major spec changes become difficult after this stage, it’s often used as a benchmark for gauging how reliable a leak is. The PS5 Pro, cited for comparison in the thread, launched at $899 (¥138,000 domestically), and factoring in this generation’s performance increase (an estimated ~4x jump this time, versus 5.5x from PS4 to PS5), the dominant view was that the next-gen consoles will be priced even higher. On the other hand, it’s worth noting — a point raised in the thread but not fully explored — that in the current generation, the Xbox Series X had the edge in theoretical specs yet has still struggled in the market, so a higher TFlops number doesn’t necessarily translate directly into higher sales or platform dominance.

  • PS5 Emulator Already Running Stable 60fps — 5ch: “Can’t Think of a Single Game I’d Want to Play”

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (Gaha), reports that a PS5 emulator has already reached stable 60fps performance became a hot topic. According to the thread, the project was reportedly started by an overseas developer angered by Sony’s announcement that it would withdraw from the PS5 disc business. Discussion centered on the observation that nobody had bothered to build a PS5 emulator until now because the console has so few exclusive titles, and surprise at how quickly its performance improved anyway. Commenters named several titles such as the Demon’s Souls Remake and Astro Bot, with some arguing that anyone who just wants the exclusives could get by on Steam instead, alongside talk of how the development difficulty compares to PS4 emulators.

This isn't really an "emulator" so much as middleware — or more accurately, a compatibility layer. PS5 and PC hardware are built almost the same way, so unlike something like the Famicom, there's no need to simulate the hardware at all.

There's also Finger Fitness and Neptunia GoGo.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Current-generation consoles like the PS5 and PS4 use an internal architecture nearly identical to a PC’s, based on x86, so unlike older consoles such as the Famicom, there’s no need to simulate the hardware from scratch. That’s why some in the thread pointed out that, strictly speaking, this software should be called a “compatibility layer” rather than an “emulator.” Opinions were also split on the motivation behind the project, with some claiming it was a reaction to Sony’s withdrawal from the disc business, and others arguing it simply came down to there being so few PS5-exclusive titles worth playing in the first place. There was also talk of whether the emulator could reproduce PSSR (the AI upscaling feature built into the PS5 Pro), but readers should note this remained speculation and wishful thinking within the thread rather than confirmed information.

  • Switch 2 Sales Show Signs of Recovery — 5ch: ‘At This Rate It’ll Overtake PS5 Next Year, Right?’

A thread on 5ch’s Console/Industry (“Geha”) board sparked debate over Switch2 and PS5 sales figures. The thread’s creator posted monthly sales numbers — 448,500 units in March, 241,600 in April, and 634,800 in May — and pointed out that momentum had slowed following May’s price hike. In response, replies pushed back, noting that Switch2 has kept beating the PS5 in the most recent weekly rankings, and that September sales have actually picked up as the post-Obon slump reversed, making it too early to call this a “slowdown” based on monthly data alone. The thread turned into a back-and-forth comparison war citing VGChartz estimates alongside Sony and Nintendo’s official quarterly earnings figures, with opinions split over how momentum will hold up heading into the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles.

We're heading into the year-end shopping season, so it's still wait-and-see for now (´・ω・`)
Also, since everyone knows the price hike is the cause, they could fix this easily if they wanted to.
Basically, if they bundle a game or something to bring the effective price down, it'll start selling again.

The reason Nintendo isn't rushing to do that comes down to one thing: "But we're still outselling the PS5, right?"
In the first place, the moment they raised the price to ¥60,000 when the PS5 is only ¥55,000, that was them saying "There's no real rival, so we can take our time" — in other words, [they're not taking the competition seriously].

It's third parties, more than Nintendo, that seem to be having a genuinely rough time.
Even when they port games originally made for PC/PS5/Xbox over to Switch2, they don't sell all that well.
It doesn't have that "anything you release will sell" vibe that Switch1 had.
    89AnonymousSep 23, 2026 22:01
    Re: #77
That's because they completely ignored the Switch [1] the whole time.
If they think they can just drop something out of nowhere and have it sell without ever building a loyal customer base, that kind of thinking is worse than even Falcom's or Nippon Ichi's.

Background and key points of this discussion

VGChartz, the source cited in the thread, is an unofficial estimate site, and its numbers can diverge from actual sales — worth keeping in mind. On the other hand, posts #41 and #51 cite figures based on Sony’s and Nintendo’s official earnings reports, so the nature of the numbers varies depending on the source. The debate essentially boils down to two points: (1) whether sales trends should be judged by monthly or weekly figures, and (2) whether the post-price-hike slowdown is just a temporary rebound from rush-buying, or a genuine, sustained decline. Some posters in the thread pointed out that sales have actually been trending upward since September, suggesting it’s hard to declare a firm trend from a single month’s numbers alone. The discussion also touches on how the year-end shopping season and next year’s lineup of major titles — the new Kirby game, Pokémon, and Xenoblade — are likely to shape sales momentum going forward.

  • Capcom Exec’s ‘PS5 Is the Barrier’ Comment Sparks 5ch Slugfest Over What It Actually Meant

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board titled “What game do you even have to release to make Switch 2 software sell?” kicked off with posters citing the poor performance of big Nintendo titles like Metroid and Mario Tennis. The discussion centered on a remark made by a Capcom executive in an interview with Nikkei Cross Trend: “The PS5 hardware costs about 80,000 yen, and factoring in the cost at purchase brings it to around 100,000 yen — that’s a barrier to adoption.” That comment — originally about the PS5 being the barrier — got twisted by part of the thread into the exact opposite claim, that the Switch 2 was the “barrier,” and things devolved into repeated rounds of “source?” as posters demanded proof.

    > Overcoming that barrier and figuring out how to get "Monster Hunter Wilds" into more people's hands is our next challenge. There will be sales and promotions going forward, and we're building a strategy to use those opportunities to keep boosting unit sales over the course of this year.

    Re: #97
I said "since the Spotlight switch" — funny how that worked out lol

Background and key points of this discussion

At the heart of this story is how to interpret an interview Capcom gave to Nikkei Cross Trend about its sales strategy for “Monster Hunter Wilds.” The original comment was to the effect that “the PS5 hardware costs about 80,000 yen, and including related costs it comes to around 100,000 yen — a barrier to adoption, especially for younger consumers,” with the PS5’s price as the subject. Part of the thread, however, quoted this as meaning the opposite — that “Switch 2 is the barrier” — which set off a long back-and-forth of posters demanding a “source?” for that claim. On the Hardware/Industry board, this kind of quote-clipping and misreading spreads easily, and here too interpretations stayed split until someone posted the primary source (the article URL). The key things for readers to keep in mind: the subject of the original comment was “the price of the PS5,” not “Switch 2,” and Switch 2 launched in June 2025 at 49,980 yen — meaning its hardware price is actually lower than the PS5’s.

  • New Fire Emblem Sells Out Everywhere — Genuine Demand or Manufactured Shortage?

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board reports that Nintendo’s new “Fire Emblem: Bansei Senkou” (lit. “Myriad Purples, Thousand Reds”) for Switch 2 is already turning up as “sold out” or switched over to “October shipment” pre-orders on retail sites like eDion, only a short time after launch. Some posters voiced suspicion that this looks like a manufactured shortage — “it doesn’t feel like it’s selling that well” — while others insisted it’s simply that retailers ordered light stock. The thread turned into a running guessing game about actual sales, using the first-week numbers of previous entries “Three Houses” and “Engage” (both said to be around 150,000 units) as a benchmark.

It doesn’t seem to be selling all that much, but

Did you forget the spike in interest from the 'Bloody Reunion' trailer?
Within the FE series, Awakening and Three Houses are outliers — Engage's numbers represent the hardcore base. How far past that the series can pull in casual buyers is what really swings total sales.
This time, domestically, I'd guess it lands just a bit above Engage. Factoring in the digital download ratio, I don't think it goes much higher than that.
Compared to how things looked before Three Houses launched, this game's true protagonist has a weaker hook.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Both “Three Houses” and “Engage” in the Fire Emblem series are said to have sold around 150,000 units in their first week, and this figure was repeatedly cited in the thread as a benchmark for estimating actual sales. That said, the numbers thrown around in the thread aren’t official weekly sales data from outlets like Famitsu, but rather posters’ own guesses or unofficial tallies sourced from overseas forums, so some caution is warranted. It’s also worth noting that “Three Houses” launched more than two years after the original Switch’s debut, once the console’s install base was already large, whereas this new title arrived only about a year into the Switch 2’s life, while its install base is still growing — meaning a straightforward comparison of unit sales isn’t quite apples-to-apples. Where opinions in the thread split was over whether the in-store shortage is “proof it’s selling well” or simply “the result of retailers ordering conservatively” — both explanations remain circumstantial, and an official weekly sales report will be needed to settle the matter.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Fire Emblem — a manufactured shortage?“.

  • Was Street Fighter ZERO a “Revolution”? 5ch: “ZERO2 Made the Comeback”

Street Fighter ZERO launched in arcades in June 1995, followed by ZERO2 in March 1996, bringing an anime-style visual overhaul along with new mechanics like chain combos, air guard, and the ability to use multiple Super Combos. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, opinions split over whether this really amounted to a “revolution.” Some were skeptical, arguing it was “just CPS1 dressed up to look next-gen,” while others recalled that almost nobody in arcades at the time could actually chain into a Super Combo, and that although ZERO1 flopped, ZERO2 brought the series back into the spotlight.

    1AnonymousSep 23, 2026 17:18
Like Vampire (Darkstalkers), the characters got an anime-style makeover, plus chain combos, air guard, and multiple Super Combos.
    Was that actually shocking?

Maybe it started out as the third entry in the D&D series before getting switched from a beat-'em-up to a fighting game concept.

By the way, there's also a D&D versus fighting game that came out for PS1 overseas.

ZERO1 had clunky anime-style graphics, a so-so character lineup, and sluggish controls — combined with getting ported to consoles early on, it fell to single cabinets in arcades almost immediately.

ZERO2, on the other hand, had pre-release ads in Gamest revealing Zangief, Dhalsim, Gen from the original game, Rolento from Final Fight, and a mysterious girl in a sailor uniform — a complete turnaround from ZERO1 that built real anticipation.

    99AnonymousSep 23, 2026 19:35
It's a series where the new entries never get that popular, and it keeps clawing back with upgraded re-releases that add Street Fighter II characters.
    102AnonymousSep 23, 2026 19:43
    Re: #99
If you want to swap out the whole cast, you might as well change the title, right?
In fighting games, different characters completely change how the game feels to play, so unlike other action games, it's hard to keep the core the same when you swap characters.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Street Fighter ZERO launched in arcades in June 1995, ZERO2 in March 1996, and III — which overhauled the series — in February 1997; as commenters note, ZERO2 actually came out before III. ZERO ran on the CPS1 board, and it also served as a comeback strategy during a period when Capcom was losing arcade traffic to newer-generation titles like Tekken 2 and KOF ’95. What split the thread was exactly what counted as a “revolution”: some praised new features like chain combos, air guard, and multiple Super Combos, while plenty of others were more dismissive, calling it “just CPS1 dressed up to look next-gen” or saying the precise-timing combo system was “a downgrade from Vampire (Darkstalkers).” It’s also easy to overlook how differently ZERO1 and ZERO2 were received: ZERO1’s character lineup and sluggish controls drew criticism, while ZERO2’s roster — revealed early through magazine ads — generated buzz that carried over into real popularity once it hit arcades.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Was Street Fighter ZERO actually a revolution back then?.”

  • US Prices for Pokémon Card 30th Anniversary Boxes Crash — Scalpers’ “We’re Considering Legal Action” Gets Laughed Out of the Room

US prices for Pokémon Card’s 30th anniversary commemorative boxes have crashed, and reports say the scalpers behind the outcry are grumbling that they’re “considering legal action.” According to the article, they call themselves “secondary distributors” and are criticizing The Pokémon Company for not disclosing accurate print runs, pull rates, or supply volume in advance. On 5ch, posters largely welcomed the oversupply and showed little sympathy for the scalpers, though some pointed out this is a US market issue — in Japan, pull rates have stayed the same and prices have actually gone up.

The highlight of this whole saga is that the people who appear to be scalpers are whining all over the internet.

For example, some are saying things like “We’re seriously considering taking legal action against Pokémon” and “It’s outrageous that they didn’t disclose the accurate print numbers, pull rates, and how large the actual supply would be.” Notably, they never explain why Pokémon’s official channels would be obligated to disclose any of that in advance.

What’s more, they call themselves “secondary distributors” and proudly claim that “no one has supported Pokémon as much as we have — we’ve helped circulate product at a fair market price instead of an unreasonably cheap manufacturer’s suggested retail price.”

    Main taxes that apply:
Income tax (miscellaneous or business income): a progressive tax of up to 45% (up to 55% combined with resident tax) applies to resale profits (sales revenue minus cost of goods, fees, shipping, etc.).
Consumption tax: People assume "it doesn't apply to me, I'm just reselling on a flea-market app," but if your taxable sales two years prior exceeded 10 million yen, you owe consumption tax (10%) even as an individual.

There's so much of it flooding the market that holding it for 10 years won't make any difference

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This topic stems from an article published on Yahoo! News, concerning what appears to be the US market for Pokémon Card 30th anniversary sets. Supply outpaced demand, causing prices to crash, and secondary sellers were reported to be considering legal action against The Pokémon Company for allegedly failing to disclose accurate print numbers or pull rates in advance. On the thread, alongside general pushback against scalping itself, replies 15, 19, 31, and 36 got into a notable back-and-forth debating whether scalpers actually pay their taxes, turning into something of a tax-law explainer battle. It’s also worth noting that Japan’s domestic single-card market is a separate matter from what this article covers — some posters (replies 82 and 125) pointed out that pull rates in Japan have stayed the same and prices have, if anything, been trending upward, so the chaos in the US and the domestic market should be read as two distinct situations.

  • Are Switch 2’s rear buttons just in the way? 5ch: ‘I fat-fingered it and out popped Mantarow’

This thread kicked off with a post claiming “the Switch 2 controller has rear buttons that get pressed by accident when you grip it.” Many users pushed back, pointing out that the rear buttons (GL/GR) aren’t assigned to anything by default, so accidental presses shouldn’t happen — but others who’d actually set up custom mappings for them said the buttons sit right where your hand grips the controller, making misclicks easy. The thread also touched on how the official Pro Controller 2’s trigger-stop feature works, the retractable rear-button mechanisms on third-party pads like GameSir and 8BitDo, and similarities to the Xbox controller’s button layout.

Now that you mention it, the bundled grip doesn't have rear buttons
If you're planning to keep using Joy-Cons, you should get the official charging grip — it's cheap, has rear buttons, and means you don't have to keep plugging the controller in to charge
Though if you only ever play in handheld mode, you don't need any of this anyway

I hate clicking the stick in, so I use the rear buttons instead, but the rear position itself is just naturally prone to misclicks
I haven't really misclicked much since switching to the Pro Controller 2, but I mashed the wrong buttons so often on other controllers that I almost became an anti-rear-button guy lol
Still, when I'm playing Raiders and panic, I've hit the rear button by mistake a few times and Mantarow popped out (the character that button summons), so I guess having it right where you grip really isn't ideal after all
Can't they just add more buttons near ABXY instead?

Besides, GL/GR won't respond at all unless you've configured them
Since they're talking about a 'third-party Pro Con' with a confirm-button mapping, I'm guessing they mean one of those Chinese-made pads

Background and key points of this discussion

The Switch 2’s Pro Controller 2 and similar pads have rear buttons (GL/GR) that Joy-Cons lack, but out of the box nothing is assigned to them. So in the first half of the thread, posts claiming “gripping it causes misfires” were repeatedly met with pushback like “by default it shouldn’t respond at all” — but people who had actually mapped inputs to GL/GR shared firsthand accounts of pressing them unintentionally, since the buttons sit right where the hand naturally grips the controller, so this isn’t simply a case of someone being mistaken. The trigger-stop feature that came up is a mechanism, standard on the Pro Controller 2, that physically halts the L/R triggers partway through their pull and switches the input from analog to a digital microswitch signal. The thread also touched on mismatched perceptions around controller terminology and standards — for instance, how the name “Pro Con” has come to be used well beyond Nintendo’s own official product, and how the original Pro Controller’s stick layout was historically close to PlayStation’s. The retractable rear-button mechanisms on third-party pads like GameSir and 8BitDo were also raised as one example of a workaround for accidental presses.

  • Why Adults Stop Gaming Sparks Debate on 5ch: “Reality Pays Out Bigger Rewards”

A thread ignited on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (“Geha”) after a video argued that “adults stop playing games because once you start earning real rewards for effort in real life, the rewards games offer start to feel pointless by comparison.” Pushback poured in, with posters citing other factors — limited time and stamina, busy work schedules — while others pointed out the unfairness of singling out gaming alone as a “waste of time.” Some posts went further still, citing articles showing Japan’s domestic game market is actually still growing rather than shrinking, questioning the video’s premise altogether — expanding the debate from “why do adults quit gaming” to whether they’re even quitting at all.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The source of this thread was a video (apparently narrated in the popular “Zundamon” voice-synth commentary style) arguing that people quit gaming because “reality becomes easier to earn rewards from,” and the thread’s reactions zeroed in on that single claim. The debate broke down into roughly two main points. First, pushback against the “rewards theory” itself, with many posters citing other factors instead — the finite nature of time, declining eyesight and stamina, and growing burdens from work and family. Second, questions about the asymmetry of singling out gaming alone as a “waste of time,” with posters noting that watching movies or sports follows the same structure yet rarely draws this kind of criticism. Alongside this, some posts cited published data showing Japan’s domestic game market continues to expand, casting doubt on the very premise that “adults are quitting games” — pushing the thread’s discussion beyond simply hunting for reasons and into questioning the premise itself. It’s worth noting that the video’s claims reflect one individual’s opinion and are not backed by any cited statistics.

  • New FF7 Title to Support 4K/60fps on PS5 Pro via PSSR — 5ch Reacts: ‘I Got a Girlfriend’

Square Enix announced that FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, slated for release on April 8, 2027, will include a mode for PS5 Pro that uses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) to achieve both 4K resolution and 60fps. The news was revealed by director Naoki Hamaguchi. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the announcement sparked wide-ranging discussion — from “Is it even worth supporting this when Pro adoption is under 5%?” to misconceptions that the feature would bloat file size, the real-world shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units in stores, and comparisons of graphics and frame rates with the Switch 2 version.

It has come to light that Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, due out April 8, 2027, will feature a dedicated mode for PS5 Pro that delivers both 4K resolution and 60fps. Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that this will be achieved using PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

4K and 60fps together, thanks to PSSR

According to Hamaguchi, the PS5 Pro version implements a mode that uses PSSR to deliver both 4K visuals and 60fps gameplay. For players who want high image quality and smooth performance at the same time, he says the PS5 Pro will be one of the recommended ways to play.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

PSSR is an AI upscaling technology built into the PS5 Pro that takes footage rendered at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it to roughly 4K quality. Since it’s fundamentally an upscaling process, the worry raised in the thread that “file size will grow because they’re building dedicated 4K assets” (post 35) is close to a misunderstanding, as posts 39 and 41 point out. Rather than debating the technology itself, though, the discussion mostly drifted into classic hardware-war territory: the domestic shortage and scalping of PS5 Pro units (post 61), and differences in rendering resolution versus the Switch 2 version (posts 99 and 102, e.g. 864p docked vs. 540p). FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION is the third entry in the Remake trilogy, directed by Naoki Hamaguchi, and is set to release on April 8, 2027.
