  • Sony Semiconductor Orders 8,000 Employees Back to the Office — 5ch: “Jealous of the Private Rooms”

It has emerged that Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the semiconductor subsidiary of Sony Group, will switch roughly 8,000 employees to in-office work in principle starting in October. The company judged that face-to-face collaboration between employees across multiple departments is more effective for creating new businesses, and new perks are being prepared for returning employees, including “private one-person rooms” and lunch subsidies. On 5ch, opinions were split: some envied the private rooms and meal subsidies, while others coolly dismissed the reasoning behind the return-to-office push as “vibes-based,” and some suggested it was really about catching people slacking off while working from home.

The trend of Japanese companies swinging back from remote work to office work is intensifying. Starting in October, Sony Group’s semiconductor subsidiary will bring employees back to the office in principle.

The company judged that face-to-face collaboration between employees in multiple departments is more efficient for encouraging the creation of new businesses.

Take that up with your staffing agency. (Or just get hired directly by Sony's semiconductor subsidiary.)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“In-office in principle” is easy to misread — it doesn’t ban remote work outright but mainly means restoring in-office work as the default, not scrapping remote work altogether. It was also pointed out in the thread that the 8,000 employees in question refer only to the semiconductor subsidiary Sony Semiconductor Solutions, not Sony Group as a whole (which has over 100,000 employees on a non-consolidated basis alone). Major Japanese and overseas IT and electronics companies, including Google and Microsoft, have reportedly been swinging back from remote work since 2023, and this move is positioned as part of that broader trend. Opinions in the thread split over whether to view the company’s stated reasoning — that face-to-face collaboration improves efficiency — as merely “vibes-based,” or to support the move on practical grounds like preventing slacking off and easing commute burdens.

  • ‘Elliot the Adventurer’s Thousand-Year Tale’ Slashed to Half Price Days After Launch — 5ch: ‘The Third-Party Crusher Title Isn’t Just for Show’

New copies of Square Enix’s “Elliot the Adventurer’s Thousand-Year Tale,” released for Switch 2 and PS5, have already dropped to roughly half price on major online retailers just days after launch — sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Weekly sales figures posted in the thread showed 29,818 units for the Switch 2 version and 16,240 for the PS5 version, suggesting both platforms are struggling. The board’s old standby jab, “third-party crusher” (slang mocking a platform for supposedly killing off third-party support), made another appearance, while posters debated everything from the game’s content and pricing to the enduring brand strength of HD-2D titles in general.

    Re: #100
But both Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest sold like crazy though?

Background and Key Points of Debate

“Third-party crusher” is a long-running bit of slang on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, used to mock a platform or title whose poor performance is said to be sapping the will of domestic third-party developers to keep making games for it. In this case, though, the Switch 2 version’s weekly sales actually outpaced the PS5 version’s, and some posters in the thread pointed out that this doesn’t quite fit the term’s usual meaning (see comment 8). HD-2D is the technique combining pixel art with 3D effects that Square Enix originally developed for the “Octopath Traveler” series, later also used in the “Dragon Quest III” remake. Some posters attributed the price drop to inventory clearance ahead of the fiscal closing period (see comment 27), so a discount alone shouldn’t be read as definitive proof of poor performance. It’s also worth noting that the figures cited in the article are weekly sales, not cumulative totals, so they don’t tell us on their own whether the game will end up a long-term seller.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “Switch 2’s ‘Elliot the Adventurer’s Thousand-Year Tale’ New Copies Dumped at Half Price! HD-2D Game Successfully Triggers Third-Party Crusher Too.”

  • 11-Year-Old Yuki Kurihara Wins Gold in “Puyo Puyo” at Asian Games, Becomes Youngest Medalist Ever

Yuki Kurihara (11, Tokyo Verdy), the youngest member of Japan’s national squad, won gold in the puzzle-battle game “Puyo Puyo” at the Asian Games. He dominated the quarterfinals 5-0 against Singapore’s representative and the semifinals 10-1 against Thailand’s, becoming the youngest medalist in Asian Games history. He got his competitive start in second grade after placing 3rd at the fighting-game tournament “EVO Japan,” and had already been crowned reigning annual champion at the most recent “Puyo Puyo Grand Prix Final.” On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board, discussion focused less on the achievement itself and more on whether “Yuki Kurihara” counts as a “kirakira name” (a flashy, unconventional given name), what brand of controller he used, and how many spectators showed up at the final.

[eSports] 11-year-old Yuki Kurihara takes gold! Youngest medalist in Asian Games history with “Puyo Puyo”

Yuki Kurihara (11, Tokyo Verdy), the youngest member of Japan’s delegation, took on the final of the puzzle-battle game “Puyo Puyo” and came away with the gold medal.

He showed no smile until the semifinals, calmly winning match after match. In the quarterfinals he beat Singapore’s representative 5-0, then crushed Thailand’s representative 10-1 in the semifinals to reach the final, becoming the youngest medalist in Asian Games history.

    Background and Talking Points

Esports events at the Asian Games have been expanding in recent years, but they’re nowhere near as widely known to the general public as track and field or swimming at the Olympics — and the thread saw comments like “probably a lot of ordinary people don’t even know esports is happening there.” Kurihara’s backstory — getting his start in second grade after placing third at the fighting-game tournament “EVO Japan,” then becoming annual champion at the very next Grand Prix — comes straight from the original article, and his “jewelry or something” answer about what he’d spend his prize money on is something he actually said, not speculation. Where opinions in the thread diverged was mainly over whether the name “Kurihara” counts as a kirakira name, with posters trading arguments over the kanji used and citing other famous people with similar names. Others noted that the controller was made by HORI, sparking side commentary about Sony’s relatively weak presence in esports gear — turning part of the thread into an industry discussion about the pecking order among controller makers.

  • Is Ocarina of Time’s 99 Score Overrated? 5ch: ‘By Today’s Standards It’s More Like 70’

Ocarina of Time’s Metascore of 99 is among the highest ever recorded for a game released in 1998, a mark that’s rarely been matched since. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (geha) board, a thread kicked off with the question: “Isn’t a 99 overrated by today’s standards?” Some argued the score was inflated by the small number of reviews counted back then, while others countered that you can’t judge it fairly without having experienced just how groundbreaking it felt at the time. The discussion ranged widely, comparing the game to contemporaries like Final Fantasy VII, Sonic Adventure, and King’s Field II, with opinions splitting along the line of “judge it by 1998 standards” versus “judge it by today’s.”

Well, "fun" is subjective, but King's Field is actually a great reference point for comparing 3D action RPG quality. Before the N64 came out, most 3D action RPGs were just polygon remakes of games that already existed in the sprite era, and King's Field is a textbook example — basically a first-person dungeon RPG, a genre that's been around forever, just rendered in polygons.

    Re: #91
Well, if the review count goes up, more outlets giving it a 9 drag the average down too.
That's exactly why people say this score is more than the game deserves and will never happen again.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Ocarina of Time’s Metascore of 99 is widely known as one of the highest review aggregates ever recorded, dating back to 1998, and only a handful of titles have reached that level since. At the time, however, there were far fewer game review outlets than there are today, and the review counts behind these scores were typically only in the dozens. The structural point raised in the thread — that fewer reviews make it easier for the average score to spike — came up again later when Super Mario Galaxy 2 set the all-time record, and it’s a point that keeps resurfacing whenever people discuss Metascores for retro games. What split the thread wasn’t the number itself, but the underlying premise: should the game be judged in the context of the era’s technology and the impact it had at the time, or re-scored using the same yardstick as modern games? It’s easy to miss that neither side was actually disputing the score as a fact.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Ocarina of Time’s Metascore is 99 ← isn’t this way too overrated?.”

  • Does Xbox Have Any ‘Wins’ on Its Record? 5ch: ‘The Original Xbox Did Beat the GameCube’

A thread titled “Xbox… has this thing ever won, even once?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (aka “Geha,” the console-war) board. You say it's the social media age, but on social media, anything you're not already interested in is basically invisible to you.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

On the console-war board, the traditional yardstick for ranking hardware has always been unit sales, and this thread stuck to that same convention. The original Xbox reportedly struggled in Japan, but in North America it’s said to have shipped more units than the GameCube. The Xbox 360 also had a stretch where its sales in that same region matched or beat the PS3’s. Meanwhile, today’s Xbox Series X|S is said to hold its own against the PS5 on paper spec-wise, yet trails far behind it in worldwide unit sales — with some posters noting that the budget-priced Series S model drags down the average performance figures. Much of the thread talked past itself because posters couldn’t agree on whether a “win” should be measured by unit sales or by personal satisfaction — a mismatch that’s a familiar pattern in these hardware-superiority debates.

  • Nadella Signals Xbox Strategy Shift: Focus Turns to Xbox and PC, Consoles Go Exclusive-Only

Reports that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox must be “a great publisher, and at the same time a great platform on both PC and Xbox,” sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. In the thread, claims that Xbox’s business has run a 10-20% profit margin clashed with foreign media reports suggesting Xbox “has never turned a profit,” while stalling Game Pass subscriber growth and data showing Xbox accounted for only 8% of platform sales for Resident Evil Requiem were also cited. Speculation about consolidating PC sales from Steam onto the Microsoft Store, plus remarks suggesting that whether Hideo Kojima’s new game releases on PlayStation is up to Xbox, were brought up too — leaving posters divided on just how far this shift toward an exclusives-first strategy will go.

The whole foundation just isn't there. Even if it sells on Steam, Valve takes a 30% cut.
If people bought from the Microsoft Store instead, that 30% would disappear — but nobody who already uses Steam is going to bother switching to the garbage PC Store.

And if Steam ends up running on the next-gen Xbox anyway, everyone will just buy it on Steam and get the 30%-off deal regardless.

So will the Xbox version even sell? No — it's all Game Pass subscribers, nobody actually buys it.

And has that Game Pass subscriber count exploded? Not at all — it hasn't budged, if anything it's dropped.

Even the flagship title Starfield didn't move any consoles at all.

And for the record, that was the best-selling Xbox exclusive of roughly the last decade (though that might change now that FH6 came out this year).
Even that flopped on hardware sales, so it's really not as simple as 'release an exclusive and consoles sell along with it.'

Plus the punchline is that even Starfield's main sales ended up being on Steam.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This discussion kicked off after reports that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox “must be a great publisher, and at the same time a great platform for both PC and Xbox.” While some claim Xbox’s business has historically run a 10-20% profit margin, foreign media reports have also cited remarks suggesting “Xbox has never turned a profit,” and interpretations of the numbers were split even within the thread. Reports that Game Pass subscribers fell from 34 million in 2024 to 30 million as of 2026 were also raised as evidence of stalling subscription growth. The main focus was speculation that Microsoft may consolidate PC sales onto the Microsoft Store away from Steam, with skeptics pointing to the 2016 failure of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, when the Microsoft Store had to scramble to issue refunds. Comments about Hideo Kojima’s upcoming title ‘Physint’ — where whether it releases on PlayStation is reportedly Xbox’s call to make — were also brought up, raising the question of how far an exclusivity-first strategy might extend to affect third-party software availability. Some also pointed out that releasing exclusive titles doesn’t necessarily translate into hardware sales, casting doubt on how effective the strategy would actually be.

  • Nintendo Stock Downgraded — Target Slashed from ¥7,800 to ¥5,500; 5ch: ‘I’m Buying, So Drop It to ¥5,000’

On September 25, UBS downgraded Nintendo (7974) from “Neutral” to “Sell” and cut its target price from ¥7,800 to ¥5,500. Reactions were split on the hardware/industry (Geha) board — some welcomed the drop, saying “I’m buying, so knock it down to ¥5,000,” while others voiced concern over slowing Switch 2 sales and how things have looked since September’s price hike. Discussion also turned to the Zelda remake’s release timing and the console price staying unchanged, with opinions divided on how to read the reasoning behind the downgrade.

Averaging down, lol (ナンピン). At some point you should just cut your losses and let it go.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A brokerage’s “investment rating” comes paired with a target price — a downgrade is an analysis predicting a future decline in share price, not a statement that business performance has changed immediately. Some posts in the thread judged company size purely by share price, but comparing corporate value properly means looking at market capitalization — share price multiplied by shares outstanding — a distinction that’s easy to miss versus simple share price levels. On Switch 2 sales trends, last-minute demand ahead of September’s price hike and the real post-hike pace are easily conflated, and the thread itself raised exactly that: “I want to know sales since the price hike.” The original article doesn’t spell out the specific basis for the downgrade, and until actual sales trends show up in upcoming quarterly earnings, there’s limited material to judge whether the downgrade is justified.

  • Hideki Kamiya: “Hey Microsoft… Gathering Talented People Doesn’t Automatically Make a Fun Game”

PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board after saying that when it comes to Microsoft’s approach to hiring talent, “it’s not as simple as gathering talented people and expecting a fun game to come out of it.” While Microsoft has pushed forward with major acquisitions like Activision Blizzard in recent years, it has also seen a wave of Xbox studio closures and layoffs, and the thread filled up with comments weighing the validity of Kamiya’s remark by pointing to things like 343 Industries’ struggles with Halo and staff cuts at id Software. At the same time, plenty of posters pointed out that Kamiya himself never managed to finish Scalebound, casting doubt on how much weight his comment should carry.

    AI's just a tool.
As long as humans are the ones judging and evaluating what comes out of it, the principle that "people make games" doesn't change.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Microsoft has kept cutting costs even after its 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard, pushing ahead with the closure and consolidation of multiple Xbox studios. 343 Industries pulled in talent from across the industry to rebuild the Halo brand, but the series’ stagnation still hasn’t been resolved. The comparisons drawn in the thread stem from that backdrop. Kamiya himself ended his collaboration with Microsoft without ever finishing Scalebound, which is why the thread’s disagreement centered less on whether his statement was valid and more on “does he even have standing to say this, given his own track record.” The point that talent quality and organizational management are separate issues is one often raised within the industry — other developers, including Yoshiki Okamoto, have made similar remarks — and that’s context the article body alone doesn’t fully convey.

  • Palworld’s ‘Big 4 GOTY Nomination’ Turns Out to Be Just a Category Award

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread went up claiming ‘Palworld has been nominated for one of the Big 4 GOTY awards.’ In reality, though, what it was nominated for wasn’t a main GOTY prize at all — it was the Golden Joystick Awards’ ‘Still Playing – PC & Console’ category, alongside long-running favorites like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Minecraft. The thread kicked off when posters mixed up this category award with the actual ‘Ultimate Game of the Year’ prize (to be announced October 26), and it spiraled into a full-blown debate over how to count GOTY wins — including the saga of how Breath of the Wild missed BAFTA’s top prize and got stuck at ‘Big 4,’ and how Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 are said to have swept all five major awards.

I thought, isn't it way too early for the list to already be out? But then I realized Palworld's nomination isn't for GOTY at all — it's 'Still Playing – PC & Console,' basically the 'Still Being Played After All This Time' award.
Category awards don't matter even when TGA is the one handing them out.

The nominees in this category are:

    Apex Legends
    Fortnite
    GTA Online
    HELLDIVERS 2
    HITMAN World of Assassination
    Minecraft
    No Man's Sky
    Palworld
    The Elder Scrolls Online
    Warframe
    World of Warcraft
    Call of Duty: Warzone

    65AnonymousSep 26, 2026 03:39
    Re: #33
Seems like you're mixed up — this is just a nomination for the 'Still Playing' category award.
Pokémon gets nominated for category awards all the time too.

    Re: #22
    That's not what I meant.
Breath of the Wild stalled at 'Big 4' because it missed that award, while Elden Ring won it and swept all 5.
Back in the day it feels like the picks were more distinctive.
    51AnonymousSep 26, 2026 00:42
    Re: #35
The 'Big 4 GOTY' phrase started getting thrown around back in the Breath of the Wild days, right?
    It's completely stuck since then.
And whenever people hype up a Sony game, suddenly it's 'most GOTY wins ever.'
    54AnonymousSep 26, 2026 00:46
    Re: #35
Elden Ring never actually won 'BAFTA Games Awards – Best Game' (BAFTA's top prize).
The only two games to sweep the top award at all 5 major industry awards are Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

    https://store.steampowered.com/steamawards/2025?l=japanese
And per that, Expedition 33 missed out on 'Steam Awards 2025 – Game of the Year,' so it didn't actually get all 5. BG3 didn't miss that one either — it swept everything.
    40AnonymousSep 26, 2026 00:35
Wait, is Palworld even a live-service game?
I remember it selling for around 4000 yen (~$27).

No microtransactions, no paid DLC either.

The Golden Joystick Awards' top prize, Ultimate Game of the Year, won't have its nominees announced until October 26.
What was announced this time were the nominees for everything other than the top prize.

For what it's worth, the Console Game of the Year nominees have been announced:
Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Bokoa (nickname, exact title unclear), 007 (First Light), Forza 7, Fire Emblem: Bansei Senkou (nickname, exact title unclear), Onimusha, Lego Bandman (nickname, exact title unclear), Saros, Nioh 3

What's 'Forza 7'? That's total 'never actually played it' energy. (エアプ, slang for faking having played a game)

    I decided it!

Kidding aside, who knows? Maybe it's just historical convention?
    76AnonymousSep 26, 2026 07:09
Isn't GOTY just some game nobody's ever heard of swarming in out of nowhere and claiming 'most awards ever'?
    81AnonymousSep 26, 2026 07:28
    Re: #76
Take last year's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — it was already getting rave reviews before it swept every GOTY award.
But I bet to a clueless idiot like you, that was also 'some game nobody's ever heard of,' huh? (豚, lit. 'pig,' a common 5ch insult)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

GOTY isn’t a single award — it’s a system where multiple outlets and organizations, including The Game Awards (TGA), BAFTA, the Golden Joystick Awards, and the Steam Awards, each independently pick their own “Game of the Year.” 5ch posters informally tally how many of these major awards a title has won, using nicknames like “Big 3,” “Big 4,” and “Big 5 GOTY.” Breath of the Wild is said to have stalled at “Big 4” because it missed BAFTA’s top prize, while Elden Ring is credited with sweeping all five major awards. In recent years, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are cited as the rare titles to have achieved a full 5-for-5 sweep. The Palworld nomination that sparked this discussion was actually for just one of the Golden Joystick Awards’ many category awards, “Still Playing – PC & Console” — nominees for the actual top prize, “Ultimate Game of the Year,” aren’t due to be announced until October 26. The thread title’s claim of a “Big 4 GOTY nomination” appears to stem from a mix-up between this category award and the main prize.

  • Is the Next Halo a Full Reboot? Report of Scrapped Storyline Sparks Debate

Overseas outlet twistedvoxel.com reported that the next Halo game could be a full reboot that scraps the existing storyline entirely, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters were split on the wisdom of ditching past entries — some noted Spider-Man kept its fanbase through a reboot, while Terminator saw mixed reception across its sequels. Frustration centered especially on the Cortana-related story arcs from Halo 4 onward, with many wishing the series had ended at Halo 3 or Reach, while others argued the franchise should just go for a total clean-slate reboot.

It’s being reported that the next Halo game will be a reboot, with the entire existing storyline set to be discarded.

Unlike a super-niche series like Like a Dragon (Yakuza),
Call of Duty is at the absolute top of the world in sales and marketing.
It can ditch its past and still succeed just fine.
If anything, the more you pander to old-school fans, the lower your odds of success.

The first game's magic is pretty much gone by now anyway.
The remake of the original, which took 5 years to make, reportedly only sold around 200-300k copies on Steam.
Xbox leadership must be tearing their hair out over that.
They shouldn't cling to the original — just borrow the Halo name and rebuild everything else from scratch.

The original Halo, the Halo remaster, the Master Chief Collection, and now this remaster…

    105AnonymousSep 26, 2026 07:48
    Re: #103
The story wrapped up in 3.

Background and key points of debate

Halo has been Microsoft’s flagship FPS since the original launched in 2001. The story reached a natural stopping point when the war against the Covenant wrapped up in Halo 3, but from Halo 4 onward, new plot threads involving the AI Cortana’s rampancy and the Forerunners were introduced — and posters in the thread frequently say “the story got hard to follow” from that point on. Development has since been handed to 343 Industries, and criticism has often been aimed at the studio’s handling of the series. What’s driving discussion here isn’t so much the reboot report itself as whether wiping out past entries entirely is the right call — the thread contrasts Spider-Man, where a reboot didn’t cost the franchise its audience, with Terminator, where repeated sequels led to mixed reception. Note that the box office figures and remake sales numbers cited in the thread are fan estimates, not official figures.
