  • Are PC Games Too Much Hassle for Beginners? 5ch Says ‘Not as Buggy as It Used to Be’

A thread titled “PC games aren’t suited for beginners who can’t fix problems themselves” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha), sparking debate over whether PCs or consoles (CS) handle technical problems better. It started with the claim that “console owners just give up when something breaks because they can’t fix it themselves,” which drew a wave of replies citing how rarely Nintendo hardware fails and pointing to examples like PS4 firmware bugs. On the other hand, plenty of posters argued that “PCs don’t have nearly as many problems as they used to” and “these days you can just ask an AI and usually sort it out,” leaving the question of which platform is truly better unresolved.

Console owners just give up when something breaks because there's no way to fix it themselves, right?
    2AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:39
"PC people" be like: "Bad optimization! It's crashing!" (mocking the stereotypical PC-gamer complaint)

Nintendo hardware never, ever has problems.

    Re: #3,4
Things like VRR not working until the manufacturer patches it, or being locked to 30/60FPS even on the top-end model, are basically "problems" too. And even when a PC does crash, sometimes you can actually fix it yourself.
    54AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:29
    Re: #3
Nintendo's reputation comes from their hardware rarely breaking, and even when it does, repairs are usually free (with some exceptions). That's the opposite of Sony, who'll still try to squeeze a repair fee out of you even when the PS arrives dead on arrival.

Don't twist individual software bugs into "PC problems." That excuse doesn't fly anymore — regular people have already been through the same thing with their smartphones.

Then what about when an FF game or whatever broke on PS4 after a firmware update, and everyone just had to sit and wait on Sony? Unlike PC, you can't freely downgrade the firmware either.

    28AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:06
Sure, stuff still happens, but you can usually find a fix by searching around or asking an AI. Games straight-up refusing to launch due to some hardware incompatibility, like back in the day, has gotten pretty rare too.
    30AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:08
    Re: #28
Yeah, now that AI's around, it's gotten a lot easier to dig up something resembling an actual answer online.
    34AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:12
Personally, when I think "PC problems," it's mostly stuff like really old games no longer running. But on consoles those old games aren't even backward compatible in the first place, so that's kind of a luxury problem to have.
    36AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:15
    Re: #34
For PC games built for XP or earlier, it's not too bad if compatibility mode gets them running — but sometimes you need an unofficial patch just to launch them at all. Definitely takes some extra effort.
    44AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:36
    Re: #35
If it's dying around the 6-year mark, that's probably the power supply degrading and causing instability. Actually, if you build your PC with a good PSU, lasting 10 years isn't unusual at all. Prebuilt (BTO) PCs tend to ship with only decent-at-best PSUs, so a lot of them start acting up around year 6 from voltage instability or irregular current as the PSU wears out.

I don't really know much about PC parts, so I can't tell which ones are good. The PC I bought from Pasocom Koubou six years ago is getting pretty rough spec-wise too. Just praying it doesn't die on me.

I never have any problems. Are you guys pirating stuff or something?
    68AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:58
    Re: #63
Have you never used Windows? Small problems happen plenty — avoiding piracy doesn't mean avoiding problems. Just installing every Windows update the second it drops is enough on its own; Microsoft's been bad enough lately that social media fills up with people screaming about how many issues each update causes. I personally don't update right away, but BIOS updates and graphics driver versions can also cause problems. You can only really say you "know how to use a PC" once you can handle all of that yourself.
    72AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:16
About 10 years ago mine suddenly stopped booting — a black screen with some English text said it was a boot drive error. The power itself was fine, so I opened the case to check and found a break in the SATA cable. If you didn't know anything about PCs, you'd probably have sent it in for repair and ended up with your drive wiped for nothing.

    Re: #77
Most problems come from driver updates or Windows updates, so that's a smart move. That said, waiting too long creates its own security risk, so ideally you wait 1-2 weeks after an update drops, check whether it's causing issues or whether a fix has come out, and then update. Just ignoring security updates entirely is a problem too.

Nothing these days is as bad as PSO2 was (infamous for a disastrous save-data-loss incident), but I did have a case last year where a game crashed and afterward the graphics driver wouldn't even get recognized anymore.

    Re: #91
The only PSO2 disaster I know of is the HDD burst incident (a bug that wiped players' character/save data) — did they screw something else up too?

    Background and Key Points

The debate over which platform, PC or console, handles technical problems better is a recurring theme on the Geha board, and this thread was no exception in failing to reach a conclusion. The term “omakan” (short for “it’s just your environment,” おま環) that comes up in these threads refers to malfunctions that occur because every PC has a different hardware configuration — a term that’s also been used around performance issues in high-profile game releases. The thread also invoked precedents like past online games suffering major data-loss disasters, showing that large-scale problems aren’t limited to either PC or console. In recent years, reports of graphics driver and Windows Update glitches have been on the rise, and the fact that a PC’s stability depends heavily on the quality of its build and upkeep is a point that’s easy to overlook in a simple PC-vs-console comparison.

  • 97-Year-Old Woman Gets Hooked on Fighting Game Tekken at Her Nursing Home: ‘It Became My Reason to Live’

A 97-year-old woman living in a nursing home has become obsessed with the fighting game Tekken, according to an article in Josei Jishin (Women’s Own) that went viral on 5ch. The article also features an 89-year-old fellow resident who battles alongside her, and says gaming has become a new reason to live. On the thread, comments ranged from sarcastic jabs at the once-widespread “game brain” theory that demonized video games, to praise for incorporating games into elderly care facility recreation, alongside surprise and skepticism about how well a 97-year-old could truly grasp the game’s strategy and mind games.

I've always thought nursing homes should have residents play video games instead of coloring books or word-association games for recreation.
Tekken's fine, but so would Puyo Puyo, Animal Crossing, or action games like Resident Evil.
If they offered a variety of games matched to each resident's tastes, it'd be even better.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Game brain” is a theory that spread around 2002 claiming video games harm children’s brain development, which has since been criticized for lacking solid scientific grounding. This article runs in the opposite direction, presenting a case where a competitive video game may be helping an elderly person find purpose and maintain cognitive function. The thread was divided between surprise and skepticism over whether a 97-year-old could really understand command inputs and strategic back-and-forth well enough to play, and voices welcoming the shift toward incorporating video games into nursing home recreation that had previously centered on coloring books and origami. Some replies pointed to research suggesting that games requiring dynamic visual tracking and quick judgment, such as 3D shooters, may help counter cognitive decline, expressing hope for preventive benefits beyond mere pastime. At the same time, there were also comments lamenting the shrinking fighting-game scene and questioning how widely Tekken itself is still played today, making this a topic that touches on both elderly care and the video game industry.

  • Controller-Free Console ‘Nex Playground’ Coming to Japan Next Year — 5ch: ‘A Chip That Costs Pennies’

According to a report from gaming news site automaton-media, developer Nex plans to bring “Nex Playground” — a controller-free gaming system that uses a camera and AI to read body movement — to Japan in 2027. In the US, it’s sold as a $249 console (as low as $239 on sale) bundled with the “Play Pass” subscription service, which gives players unlimited access to over 60 games on top of the 5 titles included at purchase. On the thread, opinions split over what the Japanese price would be: some predicted a price in the ¥20,000s, banking on cheap hardware costs being recouped through subscription revenue, while others countered that the US price should simply be converted directly into yen.

Kinect projects light into the room and captures human movement in 3D based on the distortion of that light.

It uses the Amlogic A311D2, a mature 12nm chip that only costs a few thousand yen to make, it's a subscription-required model, and it's got a lead who's ex-Sega and knows the Japanese market well — so it might come out around ¥9,800.

Motion capture itself is mature tech so it can be copied, but NEX's hardware concept and business model can't be.

    Hardware:
Low price, compact, no controller, camera built into the unit.

    Business model:
    – Effectively a subscription-required model
    – Keeps releasing mini-games one after another so players never get bored
    – Collaborates with all kinds of IP (music, sports, movies, gaming schools) to pull in those users
    69AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:57
It's a licensed-IP-games-plus-subscription-hardware setup, so structurally it's similar to what PlayStation is now.
Feels like PlayStation minus the flood of cheap Chinese shovelware ("gunball"-style filler games), aimed at non-otaku normies ("riajuu") instead.

    An unprofitable division (lol)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Nex Playground captures joint movement by using AI to convert 2D camera footage into 3D, making it technically distinct from Kinect, which measures depth via projected light. In the US, it uses a general-purpose chip believed to cost only a few thousand yen to produce, and generates revenue through subscription fees rather than hardware sales — a structure drawing attention for potentially sidestepping the pricing hurdle that has historically kept controller-free devices from catching on in Japan. That said, the prices floated in the thread — “¥9,800 in Japan,” “in the ¥20,000s” — are speculation based on the US price and estimated chip cost, not an official announcement from Nex. It’s also worth noting that Nintendo’s Switch 2, despite including a camera, hasn’t pursued similar functionality, underscoring how hard it is for such features to catch on as built-in hardware extras.

  • Why Won’t Third-Party Blockbusters Sell on Switch 2? 5ch Weighs In: ‘The Third-Party Killer Reputation Is Earned’

With opening-week numbers showing just 60,000 units for Resident Evil Requiem and 30,000 for Elden Ring on Switch 2, 5ch users debated why big-budget third-party titles are underperforming on the console. Explanations ranged from Nintendo’s enduringly loyal fanbase, to the industry norm that a later port doing 10-20% of the original version’s sales counts as a win, to the possibility that existing owners are sticking with their PS5 or PC versions. At the same time, posters kept correcting each other over whether titles actually launched day-and-date, underscoring just how tricky simple sales comparisons can be.

To begin with, that's just how later ports go — hitting 10% of the original version's sales counts as a pass, 20% is a triumph.
For Switch-to-PlayStation ports it's even worse, with some cases coming in under 1%, let alone 10%.

It's true the day-and-date launches like Resident Evil and Onimusha feel underwhelming, but those are franchises born and raised on PlayStation, so building up an audience takes time.
I just hope Capcom takes the long view here.

    Re: #69
This is a common misconception, but 'good sell-through rate = sold as well as the game company expected' isn't actually correct.
Shipment volume is driven by retailer orders, so even if it matches retailers' expectations, that doesn't mean the game company is satisfied.

Compared to PlayStation, where several Story of Seasons titles that normally sell 100,000-300,000 units domestically end up with sales on later ports so low they're barely even trackable, at least these Switch 2 ports have numbers you can actually see — that alone makes them better off.

Glad you finally get it. So now you understand it's impossible for Switch 2 to win even in a day-and-date release, right?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “60,000 units” and “30,000 units” figures cited in the thread mainly come from domestic retail weekly sales tallies such as Famitsu’s data, and it’s worth noting these don’t include digital downloads or overseas sales. Switch 2’s installed base in Japan far exceeds the PS5’s, creating a structural advantage for Nintendo titles that isn’t visible from raw sales comparisons alone. Also, the “first-week sell-through rate” is the ratio of units sold to units shipped to stores, and a high sell-through rate doesn’t necessarily mean sales met the publisher’s own expectations — a point raised in the thread (post 88) that holds up as industry practice. Throughout the thread, posters repeatedly corrected each other over whether titles were actually released day-and-date, a recurring example of how conflating different release formats derails these kinds of discussions.

  • PS5 Pro Lottery Sale Comes with Purchase Conditions — 5ch: “How Long Are They Gonna Keep This Scarcity Marketing Up?”

On September 28, the Sony Store began accepting purchase applications for the PS5 Pro. The price is 137,980 yen (tax included), and if the number of applicants exceeds the planned number of units for sale, winners will be chosen by lottery. On 5ch, opinions were split between questions over why the console is still hard to find so long after launch, and debate over the fairness of a purchase requirement limiting eligibility to existing users who have logged at least 60 hours of play on PSN within the past year. Some saw it as an attempt to stop scalpers from buying up stock, while others countered that existing users who meet the requirement could still resell the console themselves.

We are now accepting purchase applications for the PlayStation®5 Pro through the Sony Store, starting today, Monday, September 28.

There are conditions for applying and purchasing. Please note in advance that if the number of applications exceeds the planned number of units for sale, winners will be selected by lottery.

The buyback price might drop by the time it's delivered to you. Take anything for granted and you'll get burned

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The PS5 Pro has been chronically hard to find since its November 2024 launch, and posters in the thread testified that stock had all but dried up since around June. The newly introduced purchase requirement — logging at least 60 hours of play within the past year — appears designed to screen out applicants who aren’t existing users and are simply looking to resell. However, some pointed out that this doesn’t actually stop existing users who qualify from applying purely to flip the console, and skepticism about how effective the measure really is remains strong. Some posts attributed the shortage to rising costs from surging semiconductor and memory prices, but that’s an individual poster’s speculation, not an official explanation from Sony — worth keeping in mind. The claim that used buyback prices have climbed to around 190,000 yen is likewise just a rate quoted by certain resellers, one that could shift depending on supply and demand once sales end.

  • How Realistic Should Games Get? 5ch Debates Hair Physics and Water Reflections

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board asked how far game graphics should go in chasing realism. It kicked off with a thread title mocking the current obsession with rendering every single strand of hair and every ripple of water reflection. The thread split into two camps: one arguing that the more photorealistic a game gets, the more jarring it becomes when the game still can’t do things real life can — killing immersion rather than building it — and the other arguing that realistic textures are exactly what deepens immersion. The debate went on citing examples like the visual gap between Monster Hunter World and Rise, and between the old Resident Evil games and the new ones.

"It's realistic, but you can't climb over a knee-high fence!" "It's realistic, but you don't bleed even when slashed with a sword or shot with a gun!" The more realistic you make it, the more unnatural it gets.
    53AnonymousSep 28, 2026 04:03
    Re: #50
    Exactly this.
Once the graphics alone go photoreal, you just get more and more moments of disappointment over things you can't do that you could in real life.
Even while you're fully immersed playing with photorealistic graphics, the instant you hit a "wait, I can't do that?" moment, you get yanked straight back to reality.
If that's how it's going to be, you're better off starting with decent-but-not-photoreal graphics and just filling the gaps with your imagination — you can accept it as "well, that's just how this world works."
Game development really needs to confront the photorealism problem head-on.
    55AnonymousSep 28, 2026 04:34
    Missing the point.
The whole appeal of games is being able to do things you can't do in the real world.
And realistic graphics — realistic-looking people and objects — only deepen that immersion further.

    Go ahead, rebut me.
    68AnonymousSep 28, 2026 07:15
    Re: #55
    This exactly.
I started Monster Hunter with World, cleared all the way through beating Fatalis, and that's exactly why I dropped Rise partway through.
After World, playing something with Switch-level graphics just killed the immersion completely for me.
Rise's sound effects were also weak, and the combat had zero sense of impact.
Really drove home how much graphics and sound design matter in a game.
    71AnonymousSep 28, 2026 07:27
The Switch is made for kids with rich imaginations, so it's fine if it's not that realistic.

You should actually play the PS5 Patlabor game before cracking jokes like that.
Only a tiny fraction of the character models are real 3D polygons — most characters are just cel-shaded standing portraits.
All the Labors have identical stats, so the battles are monotonous as anything.
It's supposed to be a nostalgia trip reliving the anime, aimed squarely at middle-aged fans, and this is the state it's in.
You gonna keep calling that a 'kids' game' too?
Though honestly, this is coming from someone who's probably never bought a single full-price game in his life, so who knows how much it's worth.

Down the line, DLSS5 will probably be able to do the reverse too — make current games look like Virtua Fighter 1's low-poly models or Virtua Fighter 2-level polygons.
Video generation itself is already possible now, so it'll definitely be usable for that eventually — probably via a mod, though.

That's just a holdover from the era when games sold purely on graphics — nobody actually wants it anymore.

It's not just the modeling — the visual direction, the UI, everything about it together just feels generic and interchangeable now.
The PS1-PS2 Resident Evil games had real personality, even down to the menu screens.
Resident Evil 1-3 had fixed camera angles too — partly a technical limitation back then, but it gave the games real flavor.
I think it's less about graphics per se and more about the creators' sense of style.
Same studio, Capcom, put out a new Onimusha too, and it's completely lost everything that made the original Onimusha good.

AI video generation has come a long way. You can already generate high-quality anime purely with AI without breaking Akira Toriyama's character designs, and reproducing an 'in the style of ___' look is easy now.

Background and key points of this debate

Console 3D graphics have advanced year after year, and there was once a time when polygon counts and texture memory limits made it standard to skip rendering hair altogether (the thread’s “space baldy” reference is a relic of that era). Now, real-time ray tracing and improved shader technology can reproduce individual strands of hair and reflections on water, but that comes with rising development costs and more visible “seams” in the illusion. The thread split between those who see photorealism as boosting immersion, and those who argue that the more realistic a game looks, the more its limitations — like not being able to climb a fence, or not bleeding when hit — stand out as unnatural. That commenters brought up the visual gap between Monster Hunter World and Rise, or the old Resident Evil games versus the newer ones, shows that graphical direction isn’t just a matter of raw technical superiority — it’s tied directly to how a game’s overall experience is designed. A point readers often miss is that “better graphics” doesn’t equal “sells better”: anime-style and low-poly games still have a devoted following, and photorealism is just one of many possible artistic approaches.

  • Sony “Less Reliant on Hardware and First-Party Software” Analysis Draws 5ch Skepticism: “Is SONY Really Doing That?”

An analysis piece published by the business media outlet dime.jp argued that while Nintendo’s stock fell after unveiling a new “Kirby” title, Sony has grown less dependent on selling game consoles and first-party software, with revenue from add-on content for existing titles increasingly becoming the core of its business. The article was picked up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“GeHa”) board, where reactions split between cold dismissal of the piece as a Sony-friendly puff piece and a more sympathetic view that the shift toward an add-on/microtransaction model does have some merit. Several posters also pointed to Sony’s reliance on other companies’ free-to-play titles, such as Genshin Impact.

Stock Price Drops After New “Kirby” Announcement — The IP-Nurturing Dilemma Plaguing Nintendo

PlayStation, on the other hand, is the one that fits today’s market. That’s because its business model is becoming less dependent on how many consoles or first-party titles it sells.

At Sony’s games business, add-on content — additional content released later for existing software — now accounts for a large share of revenue.

Well, there is some truth to what this article says, though.
Nintendo's policy of prioritizing user enjoyment over profit gets a cold reception from shareholders, so the stock falls.
Sony's policy of squeezing huge profits out of users through spending is well liked by shareholders, so the stock rises.

Given that this is a home console business, I think Sony's approach is going to get harder going forward.
The issue is that home console hardware gets replaced with something new every few years.
When PS6 comes out, how many users will actually switch over?
They can't keep running PS5 for 10 or 20 years, and will users who only play free-to-play games bother upgrading to PS6 just to keep playing?
Looked at that way, Nintendo, which prioritizes user enjoyment, is more likely to get users to buy the next piece of hardware.

In the short term SIE's [Sony Interactive Entertainment] approach might work out, but in the long term Nintendo's approach might actually be the better one.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The backdrop here is the growing presence of free-to-play, gacha-monetized titles like Genshin Impact, which has reinforced the console’s role as just one of several ways to play such games. Opinion in the thread split between two readings: viewing this positively as “a stable revenue structure no longer dependent on hardware or first-party unit sales,” versus viewing it skeptically as “simply losing the ability to earn on its own and becoming reliant on other companies’ software.” Not mentioned in the article itself is that home consoles get replaced with new hardware every few years, and it’s unclear how many users of free-to-play titles will actually follow along when that transition happens — this uncertainty is part of why some commenters questioned the model’s long-term stability. The overseas backlash against moves like dropping the disc drive, a topic making headlines around the same time, also appears to be feeding into the skeptical reception this analysis piece received.

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board kicked off with a comment arguing that people should have bought the RTX 4060 GPU back when it could be had for around ¥40,000. Posters noted that resale/buyback prices for the card are still hovering in the ¥40,000 range, and the discussion branched into whether 8GB of VRAM is enough and how the price gap stacks up against higher-end models like the 5060, 5070 Ti, and 9060 XT. The conversation then drifted into console-vs-PC territory, with posters sharing Forza Horizon 6 screenshots to compare PS5 and PS6 performance.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The RTX 4060 launched at around ¥60,000, but subsequent price drops and swings in the used market meant there was a window when it could be picked up for around ¥40,000. Rather than debating the purchase decision itself, the thread’s discussion mostly centered on whether 8GB of VRAM is sufficient and how the card’s value for money stacks up against successor/competing models like the 5060 and 9060 XT. “Geha,” as in the board’s name, is short for “game hardware,” and terms like “Goki” and “Nishi” that appear in the posts are conventional board slang referring to PlayStation and Nintendo supporters respectively — not attacks on real individuals. It’s also worth noting that the back-and-forth over PS6 performance is based on unofficial leaks rather than official announcements, so the actual specs have not been confirmed.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Question] Hey, why didn’t the Geha uncles buy the RTX 4060 when it was ¥40,000?“

  • GTA5 Stands Alone: 5ch Says ‘It Only Sold So Much Because No Sequel Ever Came’

A post claiming “GTA was basically unknown before GTA5” kicked off a debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board about how well-known the GTA series really was in Japan. Several replies pushed back with sales data showing GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas each sold over 15 million copies during the PS2 era, arguing the series was far from obscure. Others countered that GTA never cracked the top 50 in Japan’s domestic sales charts, leaving the question of its actual name recognition unresolved. Some pointed out that GTA5 only looks so disproportionately huge because it went years without a sequel, letting its sales figures keep piling up unchallenged.

Yeah, there really is this sudden hype thing that happens.
Not just GTA — Fallout, The Witcher, COD, and lately that "whatever-33" game too. Way too many Western games get suddenly hyped up out of nowhere.
And since people always recommend starting from part 2 or 3, it's genuinely hard to get into, and even when you do play it, you're completely lost.
The bugs are awful too. Keep this up and it's not just Western games sinking — PlayStation's going down with them.
    51AnonymousSep 27, 2026 22:48

Exactly, the build quality is just bad.
They get hyped to death and still turn out badly made, so honestly I have zero goodwill toward PS because of it.
Back in the PS3 era there was a Western-game boom and I played a few of the buzzy titles — the craftsmanship was genuinely shoddy, riddled with bugs, and I felt cheated more times than I can count.
And if you complain, you get "bugs just come with Western games and open worlds," so of course people bail.
Probably why Japan ends up all-Nintendo — too many casuals who only play Japanese games.

Wasn't it in Early Access for like two or three years? Then the second a PS port was announced, everyone suddenly started hyping it, which struck me as strange.

Fallout 3 in particular I remember being seriously bad; The Last of Us, on the other hand, was a genuine masterpiece — though part 2 ruined all of that.
Just checked my game shelf and realized I've gotten rid of most of them. Bit of a waste, honestly.

It was a pretty big deal when GTA3 finally got announced for a much-delayed Japanese release.
Famitsu Wave DVD even ran a pretty long promo video, and I remember thinking, "why is a game with such dated graphics getting this much coverage?"
I'd guess that's around when it actually became known in Japan.
    102AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:34
    Re: #93
GTA3 became known through its explosive overseas success.
A 1–2 year delay for localization was totally normal back then, so nothing strange about it.
San Andreas was the one whose release got seriously delayed, tied to a major overhaul of CERO's (Japan's game ratings body) rules.
It got hit with some absurd restrictions — like not letting you spend money properly — and was so unpopular that importing the overseas version and fan-translating it into Japanese became a whole trend.
    99AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:23
Wasn't it Capcom and CERO that were butting heads over this for ages?
    103AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:38
    Re: #99
Sony rejected it outright, which meant GTA3 couldn't be released on the Japanese PS2.
Capcom ended up taking the lead in setting up CERO so that GTA3 could actually be released.

    Background and Talking Points

The GTA series has historically been a heavyweight overseas, selling in the tens of millions with every release — figures cited in the thread put GTA3 at 15 million, Vice City at 20 million, San Andreas at 28 million, and GTA4 at 25 million. On the other hand, GTA never cracked the top of Japan’s domestic PS2 sales charts, which were dominated by Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy — highlighting a gap between its “global blockbuster” status and its actual name recognition within Japan. As the thread notes, GTA3’s Japanese release was delayed because Sony balked at its violent content, and the game only made it out after the establishment of CERO (the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization). GTA5 looks disproportionately famous less because of raw sales growth and more because no sequel followed for years, letting its sales window — bolstered by ongoing online content — keep stretching out. Worth noting: the thread’s own fact-check pushed back on the premise that “1 through 4 were completely unknown” in the first place.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “GTA was completely unknown before 5 (parts 1–4) — so why did it suddenly blow up with 5?“

Even Koichi Nakano, who won 10 world championships in a row, never got one
In the end it all just comes down to politicians' whims

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This gold medal came out of the esports division at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. In that same division, Japan’s fighting-game team — fielding players from Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and KOF15 — also reached the final but lost to South Korea and settled for silver, a fact shared within the thread. So the results were mixed for Japan’s esports contingent depending on the event. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over whether a gaming tournament result should be treated with the same ‘honor of representing the nation’ as baseball or soccer: posts arguing for its legitimacy by pointing to viewer numbers and the size of the player base ran alongside posts drawing a firm line, saying ‘winning at a video game just doesn’t feel real.’ One post also claimed that ‘esports’ bid to become an Olympic event has already fallen through,’ but that was just one poster’s opinion within the thread and should not be taken as confirmed, official information.
