  • Couple Cancels Wedding 344 Days Early—Tokyo Court Tosses Venue’s ¥1.28 Million Fee

In a lawsuit over a couple who canceled their wedding 344 days before the ceremony date, the venue operator sought a ¥1.28 million cancellation fee as stipulated in the contract — but the Tokyo District Court rejected the claim in a ruling dated September 29. The court held that, with cancellation nearly a year in advance, the venue would normally be able to resell the date to another booking. On 5ch, opinions split over whether any amount written into a contract is automatically valid, or whether excessive penalty fees can be legally voided, alongside complaints about typical wedding costs and the industry’s business practices.

'Photo Weddings,' 'No-Ceremony Weddings': Shifting Values Keep Wedding Venues Struggling — Post-COVID Market Recovery Stuck at 80%
    December 15, 2025, 5:00 AM

Even after the pandemic-era aversion to crowded gatherings faded, wedding venues are still struggling. Compounded by shifting values — including the spread of 'no-ceremony weddings,' where couples skip the ceremony altogether — the market has only recovered to 80% of its former size. With a string of major bankruptcies hitting the industry, operators have begun scrambling to survive.

    Background and Talking Points

In disputes over cancellation fees, Article 9 of Japan’s Consumer Contract Act voids any portion of a penalty fee that exceeds the ‘average amount of damage’ actually incurred. This ruling appears to have rejected the ¥1.28 million claim on the grounds that, since the cancellation came 344 days before the ceremony, the venue could normally refill the date with another booking. The thread split between those arguing ‘if it’s written in the contract, it’s valid’ and those arguing ‘excessive penalty fees can be legally voided’ — the latter view is actually closer to how this plays out in practice. The article doesn’t specify the couple’s exact reason for canceling or the full details of the venue’s contract terms.

  • Korea’s Flag Alone Missing at Asian Games Soccer Medal Ceremony, Fans Boo

At the Asian Games currently underway in Aichi/Nagoya, South Korea beat Japan 1-0 in the men’s soccer final (October 3, Toyota Stadium). But at the medal ceremony, only the flag of the champion nation, South Korea, failed to go up — it stayed lowered even as the national anthem played. Korean supporters in the stands responded with boos, and the players reportedly looked bewildered. On 5ch, opinions split over whether this was a simple operational blunder or deliberate harassment, with some pointing to a string of past mishaps involving the Korean delegation and saying “this can’t be a coincidence.”

    [Important]

・Korea played one fewer match than Japan (Iraq withdrew), so while Japan dominated the first half, Japan — having played the extra match — ran out of stamina and lost focus in the second half, and Korea capitalized on that opening to score. Japan was completely worn out by then

・Despite being the host, Japan actually had a worse schedule than Korea (less rest time before the final)

・Japan's whole squad was U21 (two years younger). Korea's squad was entirely 23 and up, fully using all three overage slots too

・Military service exemption [on the line for Korea]

・On top of that, Japan's side was far from its best lineup — basically a reserve/third-string squad of players 21 and under

    Background and Key Points

This year’s games are the 2026 Asian Games, hosted by Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City; the men’s soccer final was held at Toyota Stadium, with South Korea defeating Japan 1-0. Tournament organizers have issued no official explanation as to whether the failure to raise the flag at the medal ceremony was a mistake or intentional, and it’s worth noting that the “deliberate harassment” and “scheme by a specific country” theories circulating on 5ch are all unsubstantiated speculation. Within the thread, opinions are split between those who see it as a simple human error and those who, pointing to other alleged incidents raised in the same thread (such as anthem mix-ups and guidance errors), believe it was intentional — neither side has solid proof. The broader games have also seen other flashpoints, such as the handling of the Rising Sun flag and Taiwan’s flag, and this incident is partly being discussed as an extension of that.

  • Hokkaido Civil Servant Pay Rises ¥210,000 to ¥6.72 Million — 5ch Asks: ‘Why ¥2 Million Above Average?’

On October 2, the Hokkaido Personnel Commission recommended that Governor Naomichi Suzuki raise prefectural employees’ monthly pay by 2.9% and bonuses by 0.05 months’ worth for fiscal year 2026. If adopted as recommended, the average annual salary for general administrative staff (age 40.6) would rise by ¥214,000 to ¥6,723,000 — the fifth consecutive annual increase. Total personnel costs for the prefecture are expected to grow by roughly ¥13.9 billion, with starting salaries for both university and high school graduates also rising for a fifth straight year. On 5ch, the thread split between doubts over public servants’ pay far outpacing the private-sector average, concern over Hokkaido’s financial health, and the counterargument that ‘if Hokkaido residents are fine with it, it’s not outsiders’ place to complain.’

On the 2nd, the Hokkaido Personnel Commission recommended a pay raise for prefectural employees to Governor Naomichi Suzuki, calling for fiscal 2026 monthly pay to rise 2.9% over the previous year and bonuses to increase by 0.05 months’ worth. The goal is to close the gap with private-sector pay, and if adopted as recommended, it would mark five consecutive years of increases.

The prefecture will now enter labor-management negotiations. If settled as recommended, the average annual salary for general administrative staff (age 40.6) will rise by ¥214,000 to ¥6,723,000. This would push the prefecture’s total personnel costs up by roughly ¥13.9 billion.

To help secure talent, the commission also called for raising starting salaries by ¥9,500. For university graduates, that’s a 4.1% increase to ¥241,500; for high school graduates, a 4.7% increase to ¥209,800. This marks the fifth straight year of starting-salary hikes as well, though the rate of increase for both groups is smaller than the roughly 12% seen two years ago.

Around the 3-minute mark it shows income distribution graphs both with and without part-timers included.

Because plenty of politicians lose their seats if they make enemies of civil servants.

Background and Talking Points Behind This Story

Local civil servants’ pay is set through a “private-sector parity” system, in which a personnel commission surveys wage levels at private companies within the prefecture and makes a recommendation to the governor. The Hokkaido Personnel Commission based this 2.9% recommendation on wage data from 310 companies within the prefecture — meaning the thread’s suggestion that it’s “probably benchmarking against big Tokyo companies” doesn’t actually match how the system works. Meanwhile, the starting-salary increase sits in the 4% range for both university and high school graduates, a sharp slowdown from the roughly 12% seen two years ago, suggesting an attempt to balance the need to attract talent against budget constraints. The thread also raised the point that civil servants earn “more than ¥2 million above the ¥4.78 million average annual income,” but that ¥4.78 million figure includes part-time and non-regular workers’ pay too — it’s easy to overlook that this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison between regular employees. Opinions in the thread split depending on whether posters weighted concerns about Hokkaido’s finances more heavily, or the institutional rationale behind private-sector pay parity.

  • Rental Apartment Dealbreakers Spark Debate: 5ch Users Say ‘Propane Gas and Lofts Are the Real Killers — Utility Bills Skyrocket’

A thread where 5ch users traded “conditions to avoid” when hunting for a rental apartment took off. Propane gas hookups and loft-equipped units got slammed for driving up utility bills and being a hassle to use, while ground-floor units and places near parks or schools drew complaints over security and noise. On the other hand, some posters offered concrete tips, like how even wood-frame buildings can have decent soundproofing if they’re newly built, or how a glut of warning notices posted in the elevator can tip you off to sketchy neighbors. Others pushed back, arguing it’s too simplistic to judge a wood-frame building’s soundproofing by structure alone — opinions in the thread were split.

    99AnonymousOct 3, 2026 23:39
    Re: #96
A convenience store, if I had to pick, but honestly a property with no tenant at all is better

Background and key points of this discussion

Loft units drew particular criticism in the thread because real estate listings sometimes display floor area as the combined total of the ground floor and the loft, meaning the actual livable ground-floor space is smaller than the listed number suggests. Propane gas is supplied under a free-pricing system that varies by provider, unlike city gas, which is regulated as a public utility — making it worth checking the billing setup before signing a lease. As for the soundproofing of wood-frame buildings, the thread split between those arguing that wall thickness and weight matter more than structure type and those arguing wood-frame is structurally disadvantaged either way — no clear consensus emerged. How soundproof a given unit actually is depends heavily on factors like its age and construction quality, which aren’t something you can judge from a floor plan alone.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The prefecture appeal rankings are an annual survey that always sparks discussion, and this time Saitama escaped last place while Saga, Ibaraki, and Gunma landed in the bottom three. The thread split over what “appeal” actually measures — some argued it merely reflects tourist numbers and name recognition, while others pushed back, pointing out that livability and popularity as a relocation destination are a completely separate matter. In fact, a different survey has Gunma ranked No. 1 for desired relocation destinations for two years running, showing that a low ranking here doesn’t necessarily match how people actually evaluate these places — a point that’s easy to overlook. Distrust of the ranking methodology itself also came up, though that’s a view expressed on 5ch rather than a verified fact. The fact that the governors of Ibaraki and Gunma have publicly complained about their rankings before also suggests this survey carries more influence than just being a talking point.

    Background and Key Points

This kind of viral moment isn’t unique to Morning Musume — it’s a recurring phenomenon across Hello! Project songs, where it’s less the popularity of the song itself and more the “surreal” quality of the choreography or footage turning into an internet meme that draws attention. Opinions in the thread were split on how far the agency should go in capitalizing on this kind of accidental virality: some pointed out that “they would have just ignored this in the past,” while others saw the current members’ attempts to recreate it on TikTok and elsewhere as a positive change. Still, many fans noted that the recreations fail to capture the choreography’s particular vibe, raising concerns that the members themselves may not fully grasp what’s actually resonating with people.

  • Bayside Shakedown’s Muroi Shinji and His Brutal Life Story Shock Fans — 5ch: ‘This Actually Made My Chest Hurt’

A recap of everything Muroi Shinji from the “Bayside Shakedown” (Odoru Daisōsasen) film series has gone through — the death of his girlfriend from his Tohoku University days, his demotion after trying to reform the police organization, and his eventual death after starting foster-parent work in retirement — has stirred up discussion on 5ch. Alongside comments like “this is just too pitiful,” the thread sprawled into debates over spoilers right after the film’s release, behind-the-scenes friction between Oda Yuji and Yanagiba Toshiro, how popular the new cast is, and overall opinions on the series.

    1AnonymousOct 3, 2026 23:44
His girlfriend from his Tohoku University days commits suicide. He becomes an elite bureaucrat but gets sidelined by his superiors after trying to reform the police organization, ends up wrongfully arrested, gets knocked off the promotion track, and retires. He moves out to the countryside and takes up foster parenting — only to be attacked by his foster child's father and die stranded in the mountains.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Bayside Shakedown traces back to a TV drama that aired in 1997 and has spawned film adaptations for over two decades, with Yanagiba Toshiro’s Muroi Shinji established as one of the series’ signature characters. The thread’s reference to “bringing back Waku-san even by turning him into AI” refers to recreating a character once played by a now-deceased actor using recent video technology — a genuinely talked-about production technique as the series depicts a generational handover. Opinions in the thread split mainly along two lines: how much tolerance there should be for spoilers right after release, and how the series as a whole should be judged given its new cast and its portrayal of young people and social media. Muroi’s death itself is handled quietly within the films, and several commenters pointed out that many viewers aren’t even aware it happened.

  • Every Single Game Featured in PS5’s ‘Special Lineup’ Promo Has Flopped

The 5ch “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board lit up over the fact that pretty much every game ever featured in Sony’s PS5 promotional “Special Lineup” has gone on to flop. Posters pointed to cases where Capcom and Falcom titles saw their fortunes turn around the moment they switched to multi-platform releases on the Switch 2 and got dropped from the lineup, fueling talk of a “reverse jinx” curse — get removed from the list, and suddenly you succeed. Opinions were split, though, on how to read the fact that no PS5-exclusive title has hit a million copies, and on what’s really behind the slump.

Wait, hold on — isn't this the same guy who kept yapping about 'digital downloads,' on a PS5 that's axing discs?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Special Lineup” is a promotional campaign PlayStation runs periodically, spotlighting games it wants to push — but since many of the titles featured have gone on to post disappointing sales after release, “Death Note” and “reverse jinx” curse jokes have become a running gag on the thread. This time, posters pointed to Capcom and Falcom titles whose fortunes turned around the moment they switched to Switch 2 multi-platform releases and dropped off the lineup, which got people excited about the jinx’s "reproducibility." Opinions were split, though, on whether the slump stems from the PS5 market shrinking overall or from the individual games themselves falling short. Worth noting: no direct causal link between being featured in the lineup and poor sales has actually been demonstrated, and the sales figures cited in the thread are largely hearsay and impression rather than hard data. It’s harmless fun as a running joke, but there’s not much to back it up as fact.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry/Geha) thread “[Great News] Every Single Game Ever Featured in the Special Lineup Has Failed 😭“.

  • From Elite School to Unemployed: 5ch Weighs In — ‘Probably Has a Developmental Disorder’

The poster revealed that despite his parents paying for a junior-high entrance exam cram school and Kumon lessons, and despite going on to a six-year integrated school with a hensachi (deviation score, a common gauge of academic difficulty in Japan) of around 65 and then enrolling in the humanities department of a top regional “former imperial” university, he is now in his late twenties and unemployed. He says he’s currently seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor, and that he still feels weighed down by his grandmother once telling him she wanted him to become a university professor. The thread was split over whether this points to a possible developmental disorder, how his parents handled their investment in his education, or whether he’s simply making excuses — with plenty of other highly educated posters chiming in to admit they’re struggling too.

OP got told to aim for Tokyo University since childhood, stayed trapped by that through his whole adolescence, and ended up broken by the pressure — his abilities got wrecked along with it
Sure, you might have a shot at becoming a professor, but it's obvious way more people don't make it than do

Just be completely honest with your doctor about everything

    This, exactly

    Being honest with your doctor

I don't really get it, but aren't people who graduate from top universities smart enough to just start their own business instead of getting a job?

    Re: #95
If you graduate from a good university, there are plenty of jobs where you can earn well without taking on risk
So people tend to go for those instead

Being good with people matters way more

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual for someone who got into a top school through the junior-high entrance exam process to later struggle with career choices and employment, and cases where the scale of educational investment doesn’t match the outcome come up again and again online. The term “palace” used in the thread is slang for regional former imperial universities, used somewhat ironically in contrast to the University of Tokyo (“Todai”) — it’s easy to mistake for a slur, but it isn’t meant that way. Also, the developmental disorder mentioned is the poster’s own self-assessment, and the post doesn’t make clear whether he actually has a doctor’s diagnosis. Given the nature of anonymous forums, details like educational background and income are likewise unverified self-reports, so they should be read with that in mind. The thread was split between harsh takes blaming the poster’s own “lack of effort” and sympathetic ones pointing to “how he was raised or his environment,” with no clear consensus reached.

  • Hanshin Clinch the Pennant — Five Fans Dive Into Dotonbori in a Row; 5ch: “Shibuya for Soccer, Dotonbori for Hanshin — It’s Tradition”

On the night of October 3, 2026, after Hanshin clinched back-to-back Central League pennants, the now-traditional “Dotonbori Dive” kicked off in Osaka’s Dotonbori River. The moment the title was decided, five men dove in one after another, egged on by the crowd — one of them jumped in three times solo — and the scene was electric, with a confirmed total of 6 people diving in 9 times combined so far. It all unfolded under the watch of more than 800 police officers on security duty. On 5ch, some took it in stride, saying “Shibuya for soccer, Dotonbori for Hanshin — it’s tradition,” while plenty of others questioned whether the people diving in were really Hanshin fans or just opportunists looking for an excuse to cause a scene.

    2026.10.03 (Sat)

On the 3rd, the day Hanshin’s Central League back-to-back pennant was decided, the diving began again this year in the Dotonbori River in Minami, Osaka.

The moment the pennant was clinched, five men dove in one right after another. Egged on by the crowd, each splash set off a huge roar. Swept up by chants of “one more!”, one tough guy dove in three times on his own. So far, 6 people have made a combined 9 splashes into the Dotonbori River.

Why is it that soccer fans get slammed for this,
but when Hanshin wins it's treated like harmless victory fun?

Koshien Stadium is actually pretty far from Dotonbori, you know (Koshien is Hanshin's home stadium)

Still dirty, but way better than it used to be

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Dotonbori Dive is said to have become a tradition after Hanshin’s 1985 pennant win, and records suggest an estimated 5,300 people dove in when the team won again in 2003. At the same time, stories of deaths linked to the river’s poor water quality have been passed down over the years, so safety concerns linger beneath the festive mood. The thread split over whether the people diving in are genuinely Hanshin fans or just opportunists looking for an excuse to cause a scene — some pointed out that divers wearing team jerseys suggest real fandom, while many others argued they’re not real fans at all. Commenters also noted a double standard: celebratory chaos at Shibuya Scramble Crossing after soccer matches is often criticized, while the Dotonbori Dive tends to get a pass as a “traditional event.” Although the river’s water quality is said to have improved in recent years, ensuring safety and covering the cost of security remain ongoing challenges.
