  • povo Launches ‘5G SA’ — No Extra Charge for Now; 5ch: ‘X (Twitter) Is in an Uproar’

On August 25, KDDI and povo2.0 began offering 5G SA (Standalone) for the “Voice + Data” plan. The monthly fee is said to be free for now, but wording hinting at a future paid conversion, a SIM card reissue fee, and confusion over unclear naming when migrating to eSIM all drew attention on the thread.

On August 25, KDDI, Okinawa Cellular, and KDDI Digital Life began offering 5G SA for the “Voice + Data” plan under the online-only brand “povo2.0.” A compatible smartphone is required to use the service.

5G SA is a communication method that builds core equipment and base stations exclusively for 5G, without relying on 4G LTE infrastructure. Because it isn’t affected by congestion on the 4G LTE side, it makes high-speed, high-capacity communication easier to use. KDDI is rolling out 5G SA across its entire Sub6-compatible area, putting coverage at over 90%.

Existing povo2.0 users can also sign up, but reissuing a physical SIM card costs a 3,850 yen fee. The eSIM reissue fee is free for the time being. The monthly fee for 5G SA itself is currently free, but it may become an optional paid service in the future.

I'm fine with regular 4G, honestly.
    3AnonymousAug 25, 2026 19:33
Careful — there aren't many SIM-free compatible models.
Even for the same phone model, plenty of SIM-free versions aren't supported.
    4AnonymousAug 25, 2026 19:34
    Free? Well, obviously.
    5AnonymousAug 25, 2026 19:37
Ah, I guess all that penny-pinching really paid off.
    10AnonymousAug 25, 2026 21:52
Wait, it wasn't even 5G SA compatible until now?
    11AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:16
Are there any downsides to signing up for 5G SA?
Voice calls will still run over 4G, right?
    13AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:22
    Re: #11
Probably just the fee if it eventually becomes paid.
Basically, connecting via 5G SA just means faster speeds — I don't think there's any real downside.

    Re: #11
    > Are there any downsides to signing up for 5G SA?

One thing that's certain: this isn't just an "optional setting (subscription)" — you need an actual physical SIM swap.
Switching a physical SIM (pSIM) to 5G NSA requires a processing fee.

    > Voice calls will still run over 4G, right?

There's no sign of VoNR (Voice over New Radio) anywhere yet.

Same kind of confusion as with the KDDI SIMs that already offer 5G SA… compatibility issues, maybe? We'll have to wait for more reports.
    12AnonymousAug 25, 2026 22:21
    Total runaway win.
Makes me want to go back to povo.
    14AnonymousAug 25, 2026 23:24
So it only works if you're on the plan that includes voice calls?
Well, I've got no complaints with what I have now, so it's fine either way.
    15AnonymousAug 25, 2026 23:52
5G drains the battery insanely fast, wish they'd cut it out.
    16AnonymousAug 26, 2026 00:48
As a die-hard 4G user, it'd honestly help if everyone else switched to 5G SA lol (less congestion for the rest of us)
    17AnonymousAug 26, 2026 01:53
Staying up all night until 9:30.
Can't wait for 5G SA, huff huff.
    19AnonymousAug 26, 2026 03:49
More importantly, add more payment methods already, damn it.
It's a top-up purchase system, so au PAY or something similar should work fine too.

Don't you have a credit card?
    21AnonymousAug 26, 2026 05:59
KDDI finished clearing out its stock of 5G SA-incompatible devices, and since Rakuten Mobile doesn't support it, they announced this rollout.
An all-5G standalone network is something Rakuten Mobile should've been the one to pull off first — getting beaten to it must sting a lot.
    22AnonymousAug 26, 2026 08:27
I keep 5G turned off to save battery.
    23AnonymousAug 26, 2026 10:32
Turns out my neighborhood isn't even in the 5G Sub6 coverage area. Damn it.
    24AnonymousAug 26, 2026 12:10
5G SA is supposed to be what real standalone 5G service looks like,
yet they're clearly planning to charge extra for it as an option. Greedy.
    26AnonymousAug 26, 2026 15:17
Docomo also said at first it was a trial period so there'd be no 5G fee,
but once 5G actually spread, talk of charging for it just quietly disappeared.
    27AnonymousAug 26, 2026 18:39
Apparently X (Twitter) is currently in an uproar over this.
    28AnonymousAug 26, 2026 20:46
    Migrated from regular povo2.0 today.
It was eSIM to eSIM, and I figured the eSIM would just get overwritten, but instead it got installed into an empty slot labeled "Travel" — took me an hour of confusion to figure out what happened.
If you're about to do this, watch out.
If that empty eSIM slot already has a name on it, you won't notice, and you'll have a really rough time.
    35AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:12
    Re: #28
Assuming it would get overwritten is a bit odd, but
yeah, I see how that kind of trouble could happen.
    39AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:02
    Re: #28

That's just how iPhone works, isn't it?
The iOS on that device just assigns the new SIM a label from its existing list of candidate names, picking one that isn't already in use.

Also, weren't you asked something partway through that you just missed?
    29AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:17
Sounds like you need to delete the old povo2.0 eSIM before activating the new 5G SA eSIM, or things get messy.
    30AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:27
    Re: #29
    Exactly that.
It's not written in the instructions anywhere.
You can delete it afterward too, but then it shows up under the new eSIM.
If you'd renamed anything in your eSIM folder, it'll be totally confusing.
    31AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:46
I use my povo SIM for calls,
but I've got 5G data turned off, so this is wasted on me, right?
    32AnonymousAug 26, 2026 21:50
I only ever use povo when I'm in a bind.
Also, I give my povo number out to people I'm not actually close with.
    33AnonymousAug 26, 2026 22:07
Doesn't really matter to someone like me who just buys a top-up once every six months to keep the line active.
    34AnonymousAug 26, 2026 22:14
Let's switch over while it's still free.
    36AnonymousAug 27, 2026 07:53
Checking the base station map, there isn't a single 5G SA-compatible base station anywhere near me.
And the only compatible devices are ridiculously expensive high-end smartphones.
Even if I wanted to use it, I don't have the environment for it.
    37AnonymousAug 27, 2026 08:00
KDDI only has about 40,000 SA-compatible 5G base stations nationwide right now.
    38AnonymousAug 27, 2026 08:19
My backup phone where I just buy a few-hundred-yen top-up every six months.
    40AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:13
It's weird that the Google Pixel 10a specifically doesn't support 5G SA.
UQ supports it, so it shouldn't be a hardware issue.

    Background and Key Points

povo2.0 is KDDI’s online-only, no-storefront SIM brand: there’s no monthly base fee, and users instead buy short-term data “topi-ups” to keep the line active, which is why several posters describe it as a backup number they top up every few months for a few hundred yen. KDDI is Japan’s #2 mobile carrier (au), and 5G SA (Standalone) means the network runs entirely on 5G core equipment and base stations rather than anchoring to existing 4G LTE, which is the current mainstream “5G NSA” setup used by most phones today. Rakuten Mobile, Japan’s newest carrier, built its network around all-IP/virtualized architecture and has long positioned itself as the SA pioneer, which is why poster >>21 frames KDDI’s move as an embarrassment for Rakuten.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t over 5G SA’s usefulness but over whether “free for now” can be trusted: several posters point to the pSIM reissue fee and the vague “may become paid” wording as evidence this is a bait-and-switch, and >>26 explicitly recalls NTT Docomo doing the same “trial, no fee” framing for regular 5G before quietly walking away from the free promise once adoption grew.

What the thread never states plainly is that upgrading isn’t a toggle — it requires an actual SIM swap (paid for physical SIM, free for eSIM), and that voice calls still ride on 4G VoLTE since no VoNR support has been announced, so nothing about call quality changes. Readers may also overestimate coverage: KDDI cites “90% of Sub6 area” covered, but that’s only about 40,000 SA base stations nationwide, and Sub6 signals don’t propagate as far as the low-band spectrum used for standard 4G/5G NSA coverage.

Artist Ano has revealed that despite fracturing two bones in her face, she showed up the very next day to film Nippon TV’s “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” (Ueda and the Howling Women). On 5ch, while many praised her for “having guts,” others speculated about her puffy, swollen face and the oversized glasses she never normally wears, questioning the details of the motorcycle accident and whether plastic surgery was involved.

Artist and TV personality Ano appeared as a guest on the Nippon TV variety show “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” (airing the 26th, 9:00 PM).

Under the theme “Ditching work-life balance!? Career-obsessed women vs. rest-obsessed women,” she shared a jaw-dropping tale of professional grit that wouldn’t even let an injury slow her down.

    71AnonymousAug 27, 2026 09:33
    Re: #59
You really know your stuff! Old man.

    Background and Key Points

Ano is a musician who has become a fixture of Japanese TV variety shows in recent years, and “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” is a Nippon TV talk program where guests trade stories about work and personal life on air. Fracturing two facial bones is a serious injury by any standard, and returning to a live TV shoot the very next day — visibly swollen and in unfamiliar oversized glasses — is the kind of detail Japanese entertainment reporting tends to frame as a display of professionalism (“konjo,” or grit), a virtue prized in Japan’s showbiz culture where taking sick leave can be read as letting colleagues and fans down.

The thread didn’t split over whether the injury happened — most posters accepted a motorcycle accident occurred — but over whether the story as told adds up: several pointed out that a fracture severe enough to need recovery time typically comes with visible road rash, abrasions, or other trauma, and Ano’s face reportedly showed neither, just swelling and glasses she doesn’t normally wear. That gap is what fueled speculation she was covering for something else (a possible cosmetic procedure, or even an assault), rather than doubt about the “guts” narrative itself, which most commenters actually praised sincerely.

What outside readers may not catch is that this kind of skepticism is a recurring pattern in Japanese online reaction to celebrity injury stories — commenters frequently treat sudden facial swelling plus new eyewear as a stock signal for undisclosed surgery, not because of specific evidence here but because it’s a familiar trope applied to any young female talent whose appearance shifts. The thread also never mentions any actual medical detail (which bones, what the accident report says), leaving the entire “cover story” theory as pure inference from photos alone.

  • Live-Action ‘Blue Lock’ Movie Tops ¥1 Billion at the Box Office, Sets Manga Live-Action Record in Taiwan Too

The live-action film ‘Blue Lock’ has topped ¥1 billion in box office revenue just 19 days after release, with its theatrical run expanding to more than 30 countries and regions overseas, including Taiwan and the Philippines. On 5ch, harsh takes (“that’s low given how wide the release is,” “Tokyo Revengers earned more”) clashed with defenders pointing out that ¥1 billion looks solid compared to the disappointing runs of the Shohei Ohtani documentary and the WBC movie. Commenters also noted, more soberly, that Taiwan’s numbers are nowhere near Demon Slayer’s in scale.

The live-action film ‘Blue Lock’ has broken ¥1 billion at the box office. With screenings now added in MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema formats, the film’s momentum keeps building.

Since its release on August 7, the film has been met with a nonstop wave of praise from opening day: “After watching it, I keep wanting to watch it again and again,” “Couldn’t look away until the end — the hottest, most thrilling film of the summer,” and “I felt my eyes and chest well up watching something that respects the source material while still working as pure, overwhelming entertainment!”

Following its August 12 openings in Taiwan and the Philippines, the film rolled out in Serbia and Montenegro on the 13th, Sweden on the 14th, and the Czech Republic on the 20th. In Taiwan, its 12-day box office (August 12–23) topped NT$8.39 million with over 28,000 admissions, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action manga adaptation released in Taiwan in the past decade. With more territories set to open in the coming weeks, the film continues expanding its international rollout alongside French sales agent Goodfellas/Round12, with releases currently planned in more than 30 countries and regions.

    The 2023 WBC movie
actually lost at the box office to that same year's Blue Lock TV-series compilation film lol

And the 2026 WBC movie Re: #12
didn't even post box office numbers — total defeat to Blue Lock again lol lol lol

    Background and Key Points

Blue Lock is Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura’s soccer manga serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine, adapted into a hit anime in 2022 whose film compilation made ¥1.8 billion at the peak of the franchise’s popularity. In Japan, ¥1 billion at the box office is treated as a baseline “hit” threshold reporters use to flag a film as commercially viable, not as evidence of blockbuster status — that context matters for readers unfamiliar with how Japanese trade press frames these numbers. The comparisons posters reached for (Tokyo Revengers’ ¥4.5 billion, Chiikawa’s ¥990 million on opening day alone) are themselves benchmarks from other manga/character adaptations released in the same rough tier.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t whether ¥1 billion is good in the abstract, but whether it’s good relative to where Blue Lock is right now: some argued the wide 30-plus-territory release should have produced more, while others countered that given the franchise’s diminished buzz since the anime’s peak, and against the outright flops of the Ohtani documentary and the WBC films, ¥1 billion counts as a solid outcome.

What the posts don’t spell out is that the Taiwan “highest-grossing manga live-action adaptation in a decade” claim is true only because it’s narrowly scoped — Demon Slayer’s Taiwan haul is anime-based, not live-action, so it doesn’t count against the record, even though it dwarfs Blue Lock’s roughly ¥40 million (NT$8.39 million) take there. Readers should note the claim is a marketing framing exploiting that category boundary, not a sign Blue Lock rivaled Demon Slayer’s actual Taiwan performance.

  • China’s BYD to Take Kei EV Tech Global — 5ch: “Polished in Japan”? LOL

Reports say BYD will repurpose the proprietary battery-pack technology used in its Japan-only kei EV, the “RACCO,” to develop compact EVs for overseas markets including Europe. On the thread, commenters poked fun at the article’s phrase “polished in Japan,” discussed the backdrop of growing U.S. interest in the kei-car format, and compared driving range with domestic Japanese models.

China’s electric vehicle giant BYD will repurpose the technology from the kei-car EV it launched in Japan to develop compact EVs, to be sold worldwide including in Europe. By leveraging technology developed for Japan’s unique kei-car standard, the company aims to boost its global competitiveness.

BYD launched the “RACCO,” a kei EV built from scratch exclusively for the Japanese market, in late July. The company has now decided to develop a compact EV using the proprietary battery pack called “X-PACK,” which debuted with the RACCO…(continues in the paid edition, 1,033 characters remaining)

It's because inequality in America has gotten so bad they need cheap cars for the people who've fallen out of the middle class.

Don't go thinking it's because they're impressed by how great Japanese kei cars are.

    75AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:55
Suzuki's e-Sky is rated at 310km of range, but rumor has it that in reality it only goes 250km.
The Nissan Sakura doesn't hit its rated range either.
Meanwhile the RACCO is rated at 320km, but a motoring journalist's measurements found it actually goes over 320km even with the AC running.
Fraudulent Japanese makers who fudge their rated figures should learn from BYD, which doesn't deceive consumers.

    213AnonymousAug 27, 2026 07:49
    Re: #199
Ford → Hyundai → BYD, and so on..

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s kei-car category is a distinct legal class, not just industry slang for “small car”: vehicles capped at roughly 3.4m long, 1.48m wide, 2.0m tall, with engines under 660cc, in exchange for lower taxes, cheaper insurance, and easier parking rules in Japan’s dense cities. BYD’s RACCO, launched in late July 2026, is the first kei EV built by a foreign automaker from scratch for this Japan-only standard, using a proprietary battery pack called X-PACK. The news here is that BYD wants to strip that kei-specific engineering out of its original box and rebuild it as a conventional compact EV for Europe and other markets — the “polishing” the headline refers to is really regulatory-driven miniaturization know-how, not general EV prowess.

The thread didn’t converge on whether this is good or bad for Japan; it split on trust. Some posters treated BYD’s stated 320km range as more honest than Suzuki’s or Nissan’s official figures, which posters claim underperform in practice — others pushed back that the gap reflects the shared JC08/WLTC testing methodology, not fraud unique to Japanese brands.

What’s likely to be missed: the poster who invoked Ford’s 1980s failure in Japan actually misattributed it — that episode centered on Chrysler’s Neon, not Ford, a correction made mid-thread. Also unmentioned is that used, non-crash-tested Japanese kei trucks are already being imported and sold in the U.S. through a legal loophole for off-road/agricultural use, which is the real-world precedent for “kei cars in America” — a separate phenomenon from BYD’s planned export strategy.

    Re: #110
The second people say "new content lately is boring," they respond like it's some desperate act with a flood of rehashes
Everyone's thinking is just so childish

    Background and Key Points

Fuji TV — nicknamed “Uji” (maggot) by critics online — has been Japan’s most-watched network for much of the 2000s and 2010s, home to landmark dramas like “Furuhata Ninzaburo” (1994-2006, starring the late Ken Yamazaki as a beloved detective), “Yamato Nadeshiko” (2000), and “Hero” starring Takuya Kimura. It’s also worth noting Fuji TV has been in real crisis mode since a 2024-2025 sexual misconduct scandal involving a former star host led to a mass advertiser boycott, which is the likely reason posters connect the network’s programming choices to sponsors “fleeing” and home-shopping ads filling commercial breaks — those slots are cheaper and don’t require brand-safety guarantees that spooked sponsors now avoid. FOD is Fuji TV’s in-house streaming service, and the network is reportedly promoting its back catalog there rather than commissioning new work.

The thread doesn’t converge on one villain. Some blame aging producers casting aging actors for an aging audience (a self-perpetuating loop one poster calls “very Japan”), others counter that Hollywood does exactly the same thing with endless franchise reboots, which shifts the debate from a Japan-specific failure to an industry-wide risk-aversion problem. A side argument breaks out over whether current stars even have the star power past leads did — one poster claims 1980s-90s celebrities like Sanma Akashiya had to be genuine A-listers to headline a drama, while today “anyone gets to star in one.”

What’s likely to be missed by non-Japanese readers: the posters treat the sponsor exodus and the creative stagnation as separate complaints, but they’re the same story — a network that lost advertiser trust after scandal is now cutting budgets by recycling IP instead of funding original productions, which is a much more mundane explanation than “running out of ideas.”

Say what you will, but Charles clearly still dotes on his son
No telling what happens once William takes the throne though

    Background and Key Points

Prince Harry lost his automatic UK police protection in 2020 after stepping back as a “working royal,” a decision he has separately challenged in court and lost — the Miyaneya-cited legal costs the thread references stem largely from that fight plus his phone-hacking litigation against British tabloids. He and Meghan relinquished royal duties in 2020’s “Megxit,” moved first to Canada, then settled in Montecito, California, where they built Meghan’s now largely stalled media and lifestyle ventures (the Spotify deal ended, Netflix output has been sparse, and her “As Ever” lifestyle brand has had a rocky start). Crucially, as the thread itself notes, Harry and Meghan retain their titles — Duke and Duchess of Sussex — even though they no longer perform royal functions; “stepping back” was never a legal stripping of rank, just a withdrawal from official duties and funding.

Where the thread actually splits is less about whether the move is welcome and more about who is driving it: one poster (25) explicitly asks whether the dysfunction described lies mainly with Meghan or was “Harry already like that,” and no consensus emerges — reactions range from mockery of Harry’s indecisiveness to grudging sympathy that Charles still supports his son regardless.

What the posts don’t mention, and what many readers may not realize, is that a full-time UK return raises immediate, concrete questions the thread never touches: whether Harry’s security arrangements (the subject of his court case) would need to be resolved before Archie and Lilibet could safely attend school locally, and that no UK outlet has confirmed enrollment at a specific school — this remains a reported intention, not settled fact.

  • Aston Martin Considering Switch from Honda to Mercedes Power Units, Foreign Media Report

Multiple foreign media outlets have reported that F1’s Aston Martin may switch its power unit supplier from Honda to Mercedes. It’s also been reported that Mercedes’ CEO has visited the team’s motorhome twice.

On the forum thread, comments ranged from worry over whether Honda would have anywhere left to supply if the switch happens, to criticism of the chassis’s lack of performance, to people looking back on the circumstances behind the team’s split from Red Bull.

This is truly a shockwave. Multiple foreign media outlets have reported that F1’s Aston Martin will switch its power unit (PU) supply deal from Honda — its partner since the start of this season — to Mercedes.

The Aston Martin-Honda pairing has been mired in a historic slump since the season opener, rolling out a string of major upgrades across the summer break. With Fernando Alonso finishing 9th at the Dutch Grand Prix on the 26th, they finally seem to be catching a spark of momentum.

Amid all this, Spain’s major newspaper Sport ran a story headlined “Shocking… Aston Martin holds talks with Mercedes, piling pressure on Honda.” It reported that “Mercedes’ CEO has now visited Aston Martin’s motorhome for a second time, fueling speculation over a possible change of power unit supplier.”

The bubble-era generation survivors are starting to retire,
and the Ice Age generation (Japan's 'employment ice age' cohort hit by the hiring freeze of the 90s-2000s) is small in numbers,
so the pool of people who've built up institutional knowledge is probably shrinking

    Background and Key Points

Aston Martin’s power-unit history is more tangled than the headline suggests. The team (formerly Racing Point/Force India, owned by Lawrence Stroll) ran Mercedes engines and gearboxes from its 2021 rebrand through 2025. For 2026, F1 introduced all-new power-unit regulations (roughly 50% electrical power, sustainable fuel), and manufacturers reshuffled partnerships around that reset. Honda, which had technically “withdrawn” from F1 after 2021 while quietly continuing to build Red Bull’s engines through its racing subsidiary HRC, used the 2026 rules to re-enter as a full factory partner — but Red Bull chose to build its own engine instead, so Honda paired exclusively with Aston Martin. That deal is only months old, which is what makes a reported switch back to Mercedes so startling: works PU contracts are normally multi-year, and Aston Martin would also need to rebuild its own gearbox program, having only just brought that in-house this season after years of using Mercedes-supplied units.

The thread’s real disagreement is whether the slump is even a Honda problem at all — several posters point to Williams (Mercedes PU) and Cadillac (Ferrari PU) still being slow, arguing a customer engine doesn’t fix a weak chassis, against others who take the switch talk at face value as an indictment of Honda.

What’s easy to miss: this is Spanish outlet Sport’s speculation off two motorhome visits, not a confirmed deal — and Mercedes itself has said it wants fewer customer teams, not more, making a near-term switch logistically dubious regardless of performance.

The way the H and N are hidden in the shot
it's gotta be code for 'HELP NAKAI' — only I would catch that

    Background and Key Points

For readers unfamiliar with the backstory: SMAP was Japan’s most successful boy band, formed under the Johnny & Associates system in 1988 and disbanded acrimoniously in 2016 after internal fallout, leaving three members (including Kimura Takuya) at the agency and two who left. Nakai Masahiro, one of the departing three, effectively vanished from television in late 2024 after reports that he had reached a large private settlement over an incident with a woman referred to in Japanese media only as “Woman A” — his agency (formerly Johnny’s, rebranded SMILE-UP/Starto after the 2023 Kitagawa sexual-abuse revelations) has kept the details under a confidentiality agreement ever since, and Fuji TV’s handling of the matter triggered a third-party committee investigation into the network itself. Against that backdrop, any hint of contact between Kimura and Nakai gets read as a coded statement, since SMAP reunions and even friendly mentions have been effectively unspoken taboo in the industry for a decade.

The thread’s real disagreement is not over the shirt itself but over intent versus projection: some posters read the coaster and shirt as a deliberate signal from Kimura or people around him that Nakai is being rehabilitated, while others insist it’s fans and tabloid “SMAP aunties” manufacturing meaning out of a plain blue T-shirt, and argue Kimura is being dragged into a narrative he never asked for.

What outside readers will likely miss, and what one reply had to correct within the thread itself, is who actually holds the confidentiality obligation: it’s widely assumed Nakai could simply “tell his side,” but per posters the confidentiality condition was set by Woman A, meaning only she — not Nakai — can release him from it, which is why his side of events has never been publicly heard.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Kimura Takuya’s cryptic post on Nakai Masahiro’s birthday — a message that SMAP isn’t taboo? Lately he’s been showing concern for Nakai and bringing up his name in conversation [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

News that Atlus’s RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio will support 60fps on the Switch 2 became a hot topic on 5ch’s console/industry (“Geha”) board. Thread posters pointed to Persona 3 Reload, which was locked to 30fps in handheld mode, as a reason to doubt this was really achievable. Caught up in it how?
Third parties chose to develop for it themselves, that makes no sense.

Ah, is this about that Capcom comment calling PS5 a 'barrier'?
    84AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:00
Third parties surely knew what the Switch 2's specs were like going in and had a rough idea how things would turn out.
Calling that 'collateral damage' — you're the one looking down on third parties here.

At the end of the day, this whole 'collateral damage' theory never gets past pure speculation.
Come back and complain once an actual third party says something like that themselves.

    Background and Key Points

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the 2024 fantasy RPG from Atlus’s “Studio Zero,” staffed largely by the Persona team and built on the same engine lineage as Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5. It originally shipped on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, and PC; a Switch 2 port was announced afterward, arriving on hardware that launched in Japan in June 2025 and has been pitched partly as a landing spot for PS5-generation third-party games that the original Switch could never run. The thread comes from 5ch’s “Geha” board, the long-running console-war forum where hardware partisanship runs deep, discussing a report that this port would support 60fps.

The split was over whether that claim could be trusted at all. Posters debated why the PS4 version was capped at 30fps in the first place — hard-drive bottleneck versus asset streaming versus simply being built to PS5-spec visuals — with one citing an AI chatbot’s answer, which others mocked as worthless as a source. That skepticism was validated when a review surfaced mid-thread showing the Switch 2’s 60fps mode is unstable and its resolution noticeably soft, deflating the “good news” framing in the original headline.

What outside readers may miss is the precedent driving the skepticism: Persona 3 Reload’s Switch 2 port only hits 60fps docked and is locked to 30fps in handheld mode, so “supports 60fps” likely means the same split here rather than a true portable 60fps experience — a distinction the headline elides. The GTA6 tangent in the thread is also a red herring: the 30fps figure being debated there came from a leaked PC build, not Rockstar’s stated PS5 target.

  • Speed Limit on Residential Roads Drops to 30 km/h Starting September 1 — 5ch: “Honestly, 30 km/h Is Pretty Slow”

Starting September 1, 2026, the legal speed limit on residential roads without a center line and narrower than 5.5 meters will drop from 60 km/h to 30 km/h. On 5ch, users debated everything from where exactly to draw the line on which roads qualify, to how effectively the new limit can actually be enforced, to worries that it could fuel more aggressive tailgating.

TV Asahi (ANN) — Published 8/26 (Wed) 20:27

Starting the 1st of next month, things are changing. The legal speed limit on residential roads will be lowered from 60 km/h to 30 km/h. This change could even mean an instant license suspension for violators. We looked into why the speed limit is being cut in half.

Even prefectural and national roads through mountain passes often don't have a center line.
Are those going to be 30 km/h too?

Seems like it. Better watch out on riverbank roads too.

Come to think of it, that busy levee road would be affected too.
Traffic's going to be a nightmare.

How are you even supposed to report violations?
I doubt those tax-money-wasting cops (slang for police seen as lazy freeloaders) are going to enforce this properly anyway.

If you feel it's dangerous, just call 110 (Japan's emergency police line)
If you want them to nab a specific driver, you'll need video footage though
For a road you walk often, if you tell them the time of day, they'll actually come out and enforce it
    46AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:13
30 km/h is actually pretty slow
The moment you speed up to catch a light while it's still green,
you're doing 60 on a residential road before you know it
    51AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:14
Even main roads in Tokyo aren't usually 60 km/h, right?
It's more like 40 in the city center and 50 as you head out to the suburbs
    75AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:18
This is obviously meant for urban residential neighborhoods
Seriously, don't go slapping this on rural rice-paddy roads
    112AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:23
    Re: #75
They really need to nail down the definition of a 'residential road' properly — not just narrowness, but whether it's actually in a residential area, whether intersections have good visibility, and so on

    Re: #75
Nah, the regulation's already set in stone lol
There's a real chance cops will be staking out rural rice-paddy roads too
    82AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:19
So if there's no center line but the road is wide, this wouldn't apply, right?
    91AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:21
    Re: #82
Right, it's only roads without a center line that become 30 km/h

I don't think roads like that exist much in urban areas — probably more common out in the regional areas?

They tailgate you even at 60, swerving left and right to get around you, but you just end up meeting again at the next light anyway.

Looked it up — seems like it's roads with no center line AND narrower than 5.5m that become 30 km/h
A rural farm road with no center line but wider than 5.5m stays at 60 km/h
    134AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:27

In my area, every farm road that's 5.5m or wider already has a center line painted on it

    Re: #111
    Wait, isn't that wrong?
A road with no center line should be 30 km/h even if it's 5.5m or wider

Driving slowly along a mountain road or a road flanked by rice paddies

Driving at your own pace is fine, but if you've got a 'daimyo procession' (a long line of cars stuck behind a slow driver) forming behind you, pull onto the shoulder now and then and let them pass
Unless you're the type of jerk who thinks leading a procession makes you look cool, in which case, whatever
    143AnonymousAug 27, 2026 06:28
And on top of that, barely anyone's been told about this
The cops just want to rake in a huge catch with their speed traps (lit. 'rat traps')

It was right there in the local police box newsletter

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s default speed limits work differently from many countries: where no numbered speed sign is posted, a blanket “legal speed” (法定速度) applies automatically, and until now that default was a flat 60 km/h on ordinary roads. The revision taking effect September 1, 2026 carves out a new default of 30 km/h specifically for roads with no center line and a width under 5.5 meters — the vast majority of ordinary residential streets, which in Japan are frequently unmarked and barely wide enough for one car. Because Japan’s points-based license system escalates penalties sharply with the margin of overage, doing 60 on a road that’s now legally capped at 30 can trigger a large deduction and immediate suspension rather than a simple fine, which is the “instant suspension” hook in the reporting.

The thread’s real disagreement wasn’t about the policy itself but about scope: the rule is defined purely by physical characteristics — no centerline, under 5.5m — not by zoning or signage calling a road “residential.” Posters kept surfacing edge cases (mountain passes, levee roads, farm roads through rice paddies) that technically meet those criteria despite having nothing to do with housing, while others insisted, incorrectly, that the law only targets urban neighborhoods.

What the thread never quite nails down is enforcement logistics: nothing suggests new signage is being installed on every affected road, so drivers are expected to infer the new 30 km/h default from a road’s physical shape alone — a genuinely easy rule to violate without realizing it, sensor cameras or not.
