Reports say BYD will repurpose the proprietary battery-pack technology used in its Japan-only kei EV, the “RACCO,” to develop compact EVs for overseas markets including Europe. On the thread, commenters poked fun at the article’s phrase “polished in Japan,” discussed the backdrop of growing U.S. interest in the kei-car format, and compared driving range with domestic Japanese models.
China’s electric vehicle giant BYD will repurpose the technology from the kei-car EV it launched in Japan to develop compact EVs, to be sold worldwide including in Europe. By leveraging technology developed for Japan’s unique kei-car standard, the company aims to boost its global competitiveness.
BYD launched the “RACCO,” a kei EV built from scratch exclusively for the Japanese market, in late July. The company has now decided to develop a compact EV using the proprietary battery pack called “X-PACK,” which debuted with the RACCO…(continues in the paid edition, 1,033 characters remaining)

The kei car segment has now caught the eye of none other than Trump.
There's even a chance American-made kei-class cars could start coming in.
This is what happens when Japanese car companies don't put in any effort.

It's because inequality in America has gotten so bad they need cheap cars for the people who've fallen out of the middle class.
Don't go thinking it's because they're impressed by how great Japanese kei cars are.
Kei cars are rolling coffins — they only sell in countries where life is cheap.
They don't even have enough of a track record to have "polished" anything.
Way to talk like it's been selling well in Japan all along.
Same losing pattern as with consumer electronics.
I thought Nissan's kei cars were actually built by Mitsubishi.
I heard it was basically already finished by the time he joined.
Making my declaration right here.
With that old-fashioned interior and basically no features, it doesn't stand a chance (lol)

They'll meet the same fate [as Japanese electronics did].
Japan clings to old technology way too much.
Even as cars become electronic devices, the body and chassis still show the gap in traditional engineering.
At the very least, with Suzuki's kei EV the body and suspension won't get rattly even after 15 years.
The Nissan Sakura doesn't hit its rated range either.
Meanwhile the RACCO is rated at 320km, but a motoring journalist's measurements found it actually goes over 320km even with the AC running.
Fraudulent Japanese makers who fudge their rated figures should learn from BYD, which doesn't deceive consumers.
Not trying to defend them, but that's not just a Japanese-car thing — it's the testing standard itself that's like that.
Why are you posting something so obvious like it's some big flex?

I hang out on the car board, and honestly the RACCO is pretty well made.
Its range probably comes down to BYD's experience and know-how as an EV maker.
people who actually try one might realize how good they are and sales could explode, right?
In fact, even old used kei trucks are already selling like crazy over there.
If you get in an accident with a Ford F-150, America's best-selling vehicle,
you could get seriously hurt — isn't that the kind of safety concern that would keep people from choosing one?
If Japan's STEM people are really that great, why not just ignore the liberal-arts crowd, band together, and go compete with the world on STEM alone?
Why not do it?
It's STEM-background executives being so incompetent that got us into this situation in the first place.
If you drive into a flooded area, that'll be the end of it.
Molded into the floor as one piece, right? If the battery ever needs replacing, it'd probably be cheaper to just buy a whole new car.
"Buy cheap, lose money" — wrong.
"Buy cheap, lose your life" — correct.
Quite a few old-timers.
"Ford, the Neon, cheap coupes are landing here!!"
How it turned out.
You should know. It.
Such. A fuss they made.
"Japan will be crushed by American cars!!!"
The result was a disaster.
Ford later. Pulled out. Of Japan.
That was Chrysler, not Ford, though.
Ford → Hyundai → BYD, and so on..
