The live-action film ‘Blue Lock’ has topped ¥1 billion in box office revenue just 19 days after release, with its theatrical run expanding to more than 30 countries and regions overseas, including Taiwan and the Philippines. On 5ch, harsh takes (“that’s low given how wide the release is,” “Tokyo Revengers earned more”) clashed with defenders pointing out that ¥1 billion looks solid compared to the disappointing runs of the Shohei Ohtani documentary and the WBC movie. Commenters also noted, more soberly, that Taiwan’s numbers are nowhere near Demon Slayer’s in scale.
The live-action film ‘Blue Lock’ has broken ¥1 billion at the box office. With screenings now added in MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema formats, the film’s momentum keeps building.
Since its release on August 7, the film has been met with a nonstop wave of praise from opening day: “After watching it, I keep wanting to watch it again and again,” “Couldn’t look away until the end — the hottest, most thrilling film of the summer,” and “I felt my eyes and chest well up watching something that respects the source material while still working as pure, overwhelming entertainment!”
Following its August 12 openings in Taiwan and the Philippines, the film rolled out in Serbia and Montenegro on the 13th, Sweden on the 14th, and the Czech Republic on the 20th. In Taiwan, its 12-day box office (August 12–23) topped NT$8.39 million with over 28,000 admissions, making it the highest-grossing Japanese live-action manga adaptation released in Taiwan in the past decade. With more territories set to open in the coming weeks, the film continues expanding its international rollout alongside French sales agent Goodfellas/Round12, with releases currently planned in more than 30 countries and regions.

Baseball reigns supreme in Taiwan
Taiwanese baseball's popularity tanked after match-fixing (yaocho) scandals hit — young people have been into basketball for like 30 years now
If it's hit ¥1 billion, it's cleared the bare minimum I'd say
Looks like it could pull in a few hundred million more overseas too
That's why most of the audience is women.
Including the anime, Blue Lock itself kind of feels aimed at fujoshi (female fans into BL-adjacent content)…
Documentary unpacking baseball culture, "Homecoming" — admission bonus is player cards featuring Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and others [muffin★]

This live-action one didn't even chart, total flop
Even though they had bonus goodies from day one lol
Probably around ¥4 billion — that's about the ceiling you get from bonus perks and old Japanese baseball fans
The 2023 WBC movie flopped too,
and the Ohtani documentary on Disney+ flopped as well
That's only about ¥40 million in yen
Demon Slayer made NT$800 million in Taiwan, so "highest-grossing manga live-action film ever" is a pretty shaky claim (drop the manga condition and films like Ring or One Cut of the Dead did better)
Guess even pro-Japan Taiwan doesn't care about stuff like Kingdom lol
Ah, this one's live-action huh
Yeah, manga fans would steer clear of that
Demon Slayer ranks among the all-time top films of any kind in Taiwan, so it's on a totally different level
It's beaten Kingdom, the final Rurouni Kenshin film, and Tokyo Revengers, so it's doing alright I'd say
Wait, there were no bonuses?
That's odd, they even put out a manga volume with the live-action cover art
If they'd done bonuses like Windbreaker did, it might've pulled in a bit more
Tokyo Revengers made ¥4.5 billion and its sequel over ¥2 billion, but Blue Lock will be lucky to hit ¥1.5 billion, so whether it even gets a sequel is up in the air
Compared to Blue Lock, Tokyo Revengers was a massive hit
With ¥1 billion it's iffy whether they've even cleared break-even lol
>>34
That mystery creature's numbers are insane right out of the gate lol
I knew it had a lot of fans since you see people with the plush backpack charms and stuff, but still lol
Looks like it'll hit around ¥1.3 billion and it can probably pick up a bit more overseas too, so it should be fine, no?
The anime film came out at the peak of its popularity and made ¥1.8 billion
Popularity's dropped a lot since then, so hitting ¥1 billion in live-action is actually kind of impressive lol
More like one-eleventh
Right? lol
For the main audience of young women there's basically no demand for IMAX — the regular theaters were decently full, but the IMAX Dolby Atmos screenings were unbelievably empty
They probably would've made more money just running it in regular theaters instead
Do the dribbling, passing, trapping, and shooting
look natural enough that it doesn't feel off?
There are nitpicks, like no way you're leaving several defenders in the dust with some flashy step-over move, but overall the soccer scenes are done way better than in the anime
I haven't seen the manga or the anime — can I still enjoy it?
I think you can enjoy it if you don't go in with sky-high expectations
It's more fun than one of those cheesy idol romance movies anyway
There was also a documentary following the Japan national soccer team during this World Cup, but that one
probably didn't even crack tens of millions of yen at the box office
How unpopular can you get
The 2023 WBC movie
actually lost at the box office to that same year's Blue Lock TV-series compilation film lol
And the 2026 WBC movie >>12
didn't even post box office numbers — total defeat to Blue Lock again lol lol lol
