  • Kura Sushi x Chiikawa Collab: ‘Spent ¥18,000, Got Zero Figures’ — Fans Baffled

In Kura Sushi’s collaboration campaign with Chiikawa, complaints have been piling up on social media that spinning the plate-return prize game “Bikkura Pon!” never yields a figure. One post claimed 17 wins from ¥18,000 worth of food and still zero figures, fueling suspicion that store staff might be pulling the figures out beforehand. On 5ch threads, some pointed to skewed win rates or uneven shipment lots, others suspected a link to mass listings on Mercari (Japan’s biggest resale app), and reactions split between cries of “scam” and those calmly shrugging it off as “that’s just how gacha works.”

Regarding the ongoing collaboration campaign between conveyor-belt sushi chain Kura Sushi and Chiikawa, social media has seen a wave of complaints that no matter how many times customers win the prize game “Bikkura Pon!” — triggered by returning empty plates — they can’t get the figure they want.

Prizes include Chiikawa figures as well as can badges and acrylic magnets, but posts like “I spent ¥18,000, won 17 times, and got zero figures” and “Same here — 16 wins, zero figures” have surfaced. Some have gone so far as to suspect store staff of removing the figures beforehand.

Heard Sushiro's running an Ichiban Kuji (lottery-style prize draw) too — figured it had to be a joke, but nope, dead serious.

I went too, and the win rate's definitely been dialed down.
    6AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:39
You'd need like 5 people to eat ¥18,000 worth at Kura Sushi.
    7AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:39
The part-timers are totally pulling them out (lol)
    9AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:40
Dunno about Kura Sushi specifically, but these figures usually get delivered in bags sorted by type/lot. If the part-timer restocking them is sloppy about it, you end up with runs of the same one or two types clustered together.
    10AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:40
Obviously every chain does this, not just Kura —
Still probably better than Yoshinoya's Dragon Quest signboard festival mess though, who knows lol

Good, at least it's a nice little bonus for the staff —
kind of sad they're just run ragged for the same pay otherwise.

People who collect merch through these lotteries and blind draws must end up with a mountain of stuff — how do they even store it all?
Figures you can resell, sure, but stuff like can badges or plain stickers that you get tons of duplicates of?
Even the buyers probably just end up stuck holding them, unsellable.
    22AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:43

    78AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:07
    Re: #73
People who buy from scalpers are paying money to skip the effort in the first place.
Like back in the day, some guy trying to impress a hostess bar girl would send his underling out to buy a Tamagotchi for her — nowadays it's just easier to buy it off a scalper.
It's aimed at that kind of person.

As actual sushi, Uobei and Hama-zushi taste better —
I only go to Kura Sushi for the Bikkura Pon game.

First there's a draw for whether you even get to spin the gacha at all,
then a second draw for which prize you get.

I think it's easier to win than it used to be —
    heard it's about 1 in 3 now.
Also, ordering through the smartphone app gets you more spins.

    Re: #141
Eating ¥9,000 worth is impressive in itself.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Bikkura Pon!” is Kura Sushi’s signature game that lets customers draw a prize for every five plates they return. As with Ichiban Kuji-style lotteries, the collaboration prizes appear to be structured with figures as the top-tier “rare” prize and can badges/acrylic magnets as lower-tier prizes. The company hasn’t disclosed the win rates, and opinions on the thread were split between “the rare tier is just genuinely thin” and suspicions that “staff are pulling them out.” Similar suspicions have repeatedly been raised about Yoshinoya’s Dragon Quest signboards and arcade crane-game prizes, though they’ve often turned out to lack solid evidence. At the same time, unverified reports have surfaced of Mercari listings containing nothing but the figures, though whether any pulling-out actually occurred remains unconfirmed as of this writing. One point readers may misunderstand: prize games like this carry no legal obligation to disclose win rates — it’s simply a lottery with built-in odds that vary by prize.

  • New Fire Emblem’s ‘Evil God Revives, Heroes Time-Leap’ Plot Splits Fans — 5ch: ‘It’s a Game, Let It Get Fantastical’

Nintendo’s newly revealed Fire Emblem title, Bansen Senkō (‘a riot of colors’), has a story where an evil god is resurrected and the hero time-leaps into the past to save comrades who’ve already died. The thread’s original poster called the device ’embarrassingly cringe by now,’ but reactions were split. Some defended it, arguing the game world is allowed a bit of over-the-top flair, while more cautious posters pointed to how Three Houses and Engage’s stories were received, arguing it all comes down to the quality of the writing and presentation. The talk also spilled into the long-running debate over the sales gap between Three Houses and Engage, and which direction — story depth or SRPG polish — the series should lean toward.

    1AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:25
It's disappointing — does Intelligent Systems really not get what made Three Houses click?
Everything up to the end of the Direct was great, but that final time-leap reveal suddenly reeks of Engage.

    27AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:16
    Re: #13
If it comes with actual gameplay, like retreat battles or figuring out how to beat a ring whose powers you already know, having it stolen from you isn't a bad situation. Engage just ended up looking goofy because of the writing and how those scenes played out.
    30AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:19
    Re: #13
As a story it's good — it shows the contrast between the Divine Dragon and the Fell Dragon, and above all, having Lucina and Lyn turn up here is great. The small details, like the ring getting stolen, are garbage, though. Whether a long absence makes sense in a leveling-up game is a separate issue.
    21AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:03
Just the fact that people are talking about it like this already gives it more buzz than something like Saros or Marvel Tokon — if it were really this cringe, nobody would be talking about it the way they talk about those games.
    22AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:06
    Re: #21
Deadpool alone got people talking, lol. As a game, though, it's pretty much trash.
    38AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:39
Some people are mistaking the five-years-later world for Part 2, but that world is actually the starting point. From there, the main story — basically the whole game, really — is about traveling five years into the past to save the four characters who, in the present, have already become fallen heroes, living through each of their stories along the way.
    40AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:49
    Re: #38
Going just off what's been revealed, starting five years later doesn't really make sense. If Balor's army is attacking, come help then — showing up only after everyone's already dead makes for a pretty useless Valkyrie. They probably just wanted to match Three Houses, but that game's 'I was asleep for five whole years' setup was a garbage scenario too.

    42AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:51
'You can challenge the final boss whenever you want' sounds like a recipe for a thin story. Even Breath of the Wild's story suffered from that structure — FE really shouldn't try it.

Your level is already 40 at the start of the game, and the trailer shows it going up to 60, so Part 2 isn't just a single fight with the final boss and done.
    49AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:15
Does FE really need such an elaborate story? Even a well-worn, cliché scenario should be fine as long as the characters are distinct and it's presented well, I'd think.
    61AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:37
    Re: #49
Three Houses broke from that mold and became the best-selling entry. Engage went back to classic FE and sales got cut in half. At this point it's pretty obvious where the actual demand is — sales don't lie.
    57AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:29
The 'pretty cool, right?' vibe — dead serious, full-confidence chuunibyo edginess — is rough to sit through. You need to write in some goofy, lighthearted moments too, or it won't balance out.
    73AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:31
    Re: #57
Sounds like you don't realize Three Houses' more laid-back support conversations were great too. This new game's Dietrich's crew already looks primed for comic relief as well.
    64AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:40
Among people who've played FE for a long time, Engage gets rated highly. Three Houses has a bunch of unnecessary stuff bolted on, kind of like it's trying to be Persona.
    65AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:43
    Re: #64
That's really just an in-crowd echo chamber inflating the score — proof that hardcore-fan ratings can't be trusted at all. And honestly, dragging in old-game callbacks and maps that Awakening and Fates used to sell as $2 DLC only makes the diehards happy. Most players, in Japan and abroad alike, have no clue about the older games.
    67AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:53

    75AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:54
It's funny how Engage gets defended like it's some unfairly-bashed game that's only bad because of its story, when honestly it's trash across the board.

No, I think the strategy portion is fun — probably second only to Fates: Conquest.
    83AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:17
Looked at as a Sunday-morning kids' show or tokusatsu-style thing, Engage isn't really anything unusual. They were probably going for new, younger fans (elementary through high schoolers) — adults sneering at it is the lame part.
    90AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:47
    Re: #83
Well, chuunibyo types like dark, gloomy, complicated worldbuilding, but that lane alone is saturated and only gets thinner from here. Western RPGs go all in on exactly that, and it just doesn't land with Japanese players at all. The core of Fire Emblem is being an SRPG anyway, so leaning into an Engage-style tone to widen the audience is a legitimate move.
    92AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:06
    Re: #83
Do you have a source showing kids actually responded better to it than to Three Houses?
    101AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:59
    Re: #83
Engage is rated CERO B, so elementary schoolers technically aren't even supposed to play it. If they built it for kids outside the rated age range, that's just dumb — and if the platform holder is ignoring its own CERO rating, that's a problem in itself.
    87AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:24
Asked whether Three Houses' strategy portion is really that bad — no, not really. Three Houses has excellent writing, and the strategy side is at least passable too.
    102AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:09
    Re: #87
With Three Houses, the exploration segments were a hassle and the balance was way too sloppy. Cavalry having negative speed growth, or the huge gender gap between classes leaving male mages universally underpowered — it was riddled with problems.
    88AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:28
So whatever happened to Engage, the one that's supposedly good on the gameplay side?
    89AnonymousSep 1, 2026 14:30
    Re: #88
It just didn't spike the way Three Houses did — looking at the series as a whole, it actually sold pretty well. Fates had its sales split across multiple versions, and Engage still hit a decent bar on its own.
    91AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:04
    Re: #86
A 'core base that champions SRPGs for their own sake' is a tiny minority. A game aimed at that kind of niche is exactly the sort of thing Nintendo shouldn't bother releasing at full price — an indie title would do just fine.
    96AnonymousSep 1, 2026 15:31
    Re: #91
If it sells around 1.5 to 2 million every time, that's plenty.

Background and key points of this debate

The Fire Emblem series has long been split between entries like Awakening, Fates, and Engage, which lean into ‘SRPG number-crunching’ gameplay, and Three Houses, which leans into a ‘weighty, story-driven’ style. As pointed out within the thread, Three Houses recorded the series’ best-ever sales, while Engage, which returned to the franchise’s roots, saw sales cut in half — and that sales gap sits behind the ongoing argument over how much chuunibyo-style flair should be tolerated. There were also replies clarifying the new title’s ‘starts five years later’ structure: early on, the story loops back five years to save fallen comrades, a point that was easy to misread from the announcement alone. It’s also worth noting, on both the defense and criticism side, that Engage carries a CERO B rating, meaning it was never intended as a game for elementary schoolers in the first place.

  • Ootoya’s Tablet Ordering System Blasted as ‘Confusing’ — 5ch Pile-On: ‘The UI Just Sucks’

Manga artist Tatsuki Noda’s social media post about Ootoya’s tablet ordering system went viral after he struggled to find the “Kaasan-ni Chicken” (mother’s-style simmered chicken) dish, which wasn’t listed under the chicken section at all. The post sparked a wave of sympathy on 5ch, with users piling on to agree the “UI is bad,” while others pushed back, arguing that “not being able to find it is just laziness.” The debate soon spread beyond Ootoya, dragging in touchscreen ordering at Sukiya, Matsuya, and conveyor-belt sushi chains, as users compared just how confusing digital ordering has become across the restaurant industry.

That said, plenty of voices also questioned whether Ootoya’s touchscreen was hard to use, with some even sympathizing, saying things like “I get how this customer feels.”

The post drawing the most attention was one shared by manga artist Tatsuki Noda.

Isn't it just a female parent hen? (i.e., "kaasan" here just means "mother hen," not literally someone's mom)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ootoya became a subsidiary of Colowide following an internal “family feud” over control of the company, and switched to a central-kitchen model as a result. In the thread, users recalled how, before the buyout, orders were cooked from scratch after being placed, leading to the long waits of that era. The rollout of tablet ordering roughly coincides with this shift in business model. At the heart of the debate is a clash between those who see a hard-to-use UI as simply bad design and those who argue that failing to find an item is just user laziness. Partway through, some pointed out that designers build these interfaces to highlight high-margin items rather than prioritize clarity, raising the possibility that the confusion is the result of deliberate design choices. Similar complaints piled up regarding touchscreen ordering at other chains like Sukiya, Matsuya, and conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, suggesting that the usability of digital ordering has become an industry-wide issue in dining. That said, it’s worth noting that any claims about each company’s design intentions or concrete improvement plans remain speculation within the thread and are not confirmed facts.

On OpenRouter, a platform that lets users access multiple AI models, an unidentified high-performance AI called “Ox Alpha” appeared and drew attention — but the Chinese company Z.ai has now revealed itself as the developer, confirming it as “GLM-5.3-Flash.” The model’s weights exceed 300GB, and while it can be downloaded and run for free, actually running it reportedly requires substantial computing resources. On the 5ch Science News+ thread, some argued that Chinese firms are exploiting a gap left by Anthropic and other companies skimping on their cheaper model tiers, while others raised doubts about whether it’s merely a distillation of an existing model, alongside technical questions about whether it can really run on an ordinary PC.

I asked it about some obscure Japanese topics and it was completely useless.
ChatGPT and Claude seem to have trained on Japanese web content to some degree, at least.

Background and key points of the discussion

GLM-5.3-Flash is a large language model built by the Chinese AI company Z.ai, and it took an unusual path to the spotlight — quietly deployed on OpenRouter under an anonymous name before its identity was later revealed. In the thread, two separate facts tend to get conflated: that the model’s weights are a massive 300GB+, making it hard to run on a typical PC, and that it’s “open-weight,” meaning there’s no usage fee once you’ve downloaded it. Actually running it locally would require additional compression and optimization tools — something like the “Colibrì” inference engine, which lets GLM-5.2 run on a PC with just 25GB of memory. With large Chinese-made models, the recurring question is always whether they’re genuinely original or just a “distillation” trained on existing Western models, and this thread reached no verdict on that either — treating raw performance and originality of development as two separate issues.

  • ANGERME Snubbed for Fall Budokan Show — 5ch: “No Way Today’s ANGERME Fills Budokan”

In the venue announcement for Hello! Project’s big fall shows, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, and BEYOOOOONDS were chosen for Nippon Budokan, while ANGERME was relegated to the PIA Arena slot. ANGERME just held a solo Budokan show this past spring, but on 5ch there were repeated claims that turnout back then was weak, with comments like “today’s ANGERME can’t fill Budokan” standing out. The discussion spread from whether the venue size made sense to the impact of Haruka Hirayama and Hana Goto leaving the group.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Venues for Hello!Project’s major shows are said to be booked by the agency under an artist’s name based on projected ticket demand, and commenters on the thread noted that “Budokan is booked under the artist’s name — it’s not some lottery between groups.” ANGERME has gone through the departures of core members Haruka Hirayama and Hana Goto, and posters cited the turnout at this spring’s Budokan show (reportedly around 4,000) and live-viewing audience (reportedly around 1,000) as evidence that turnout for the group’s next big show would likely be tough. However, these figures come from hearsay within the thread, not an official tally released by the agency or the group, which readers should be careful not to mistake for confirmed data. The discussion expanded to include Pacifico Yokohama as a possible venue, but all of this remains fan speculation rather than confirmed information.

  • Does Casual Contact Between an Idol and a Fan Deserve an Instant Red Card? 5ch Weighs In

In Hello! Project, when a member’s romance or a “personal connection with a fan” comes to light, it often leads to severe punishment — and a debate broke out on 5ch’s Hello! Project board over whether that standard is really fair. It started with the question, “Wouldn’t a warning be enough?”, which drew a wave of responses arguing that such leniency would undermine the fairness of fan services. The discussion centered on two main points: the view that favoring one particular fan through an “otaku connection” (giving a single fan special treatment) should be judged more harshly than romance itself, and the observation that the severity of punishment varies widely between agencies and groups.

For Tsubaki Factory I only followed them up through Asakura's graduation.
I've never once seen the "Hinaazu" (a member's fan nickname) live.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project is known for its strict punishment policy on romance and dating compared with other talent agencies, and this discussion takes that as its starting point. The ℃-ute member scandal from before the group’s disbandment, the NGT48 incident, and the reports of Tsubaki Factory members visiting a bar that came up in the thread are all real events that were actually reported at the time — not fabrications. The debate split roughly into two main points. One is where to draw the line between an ordinary relationship (simply “having a boyfriend”) and an “otaku connection” — giving one particular fan special treatment. The other is a difference in perspective between those focused on how such favoritism undermines the fairness of paid perks and fan services, and those focused on the severity of the punishment itself (instant dismissal versus a warning). One point readers might easily get wrong is the idea that “Hello! • ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Sales on Switch 2 Have CD Projekt Red’s CEO ‘Very Satisfied’

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski’s comment that he is “very satisfied” with sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” became a hot topic on 5ch’s console-war (“gehan”) board. Following his remark that, right after launch, the game outsold most first-party Nintendo titles besides Mario Kart, the thread saw a mix of posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles and posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2. At the same time, some posters cited recent earnings data suggesting the third-party market is actually shrinking, leading to disagreement over whether the strong showing will last.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski commented on how the Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Cyberpunk 2077” has been selling.

“For a while after launch, I think it was the best-selling third-party game on the Nintendo Switch 2.

In fact, aside from Mario Kart, it outsold most of Nintendo’s own games.”

There are actually plenty of cases of third-party titles on the original Switch getting a second wind,
so it's already established that this is a market where a genuinely well-made game will sell
What's different on Switch 2 is that, on top of that, more core-gamer-oriented titles are starting to sell too

But the thing is, Switch 2's third-party market actually shrank from year 1 to year 2, , , ,

             FY26/Q1 → FY27/Q1
Switch 2 cumulative hardware 5.82 million units → 23.68 million units
    Third-party revenue ¥41.4 billion → ¥37.5 billion*①

    *① FY27/Q1: total software revenue (¥132.7 billion ÷ 61.5% = ¥215.8 billion) × third-party share of 17.4% = ¥37.5 billion

    Background and Key Points

“Cyberpunk 2077” launched in 2020 to a wave of bugs and harsh criticism, and has since rebuilt its reputation through ongoing updates. It’s worth noting that CD Projekt Red’s “very satisfied” comment here refers to the game’s relative sales ranking among Switch 2 software overall, not a guarantee about the growth rate or profitability of the Switch 2 market as a whole. In the thread, posts pointing to weak sales for Nintendo’s own titles ran alongside posts analyzing why third-party software is doing well on Switch 2, but posts citing earnings materials also showed data indicating that even as Switch 2’s cumulative hardware sales grow, third-party market revenue itself has shrunk compared to the same period last year — leaving open just how broadly the “third-party games sell on this platform” narrative actually holds across the market.

  • US Thrill Ride ‘X2’ Sends Two Riders to Emergency Brain Surgery in Just 6 Days

At Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park in California, two female riders suffered severe brain injuries in separate incidents just six days apart after riding the thrill coaster “X2,” undergoing emergency brain surgery, according to reports from JoongAng Ilbo-affiliated media. X2 is known for its unique design featuring seats that rotate independently. On 5ch’s Science News+ thread, opinions were divided over whether the cause lay in the G-forces involved or in inadequate safety management, and debate also broke out over whether even a small number of cases should be treated as a serious problem.

A concussion happens when the brain shakes violently and the blood vessels connecting it to the skull tear.

    Re: #53
Maybe have riders wear an HMD and show them footage shot by a drone instead?

Background and Key Points of Debate

X2 is a “4th Dimension” style coaster whose seats rotate independently along the vertical axis as it races along the track, giving it a more complex, multidirectional G-force profile than a standard coaster. On the thread, some pointed to a plausible mechanism: rapid rotation shakes the brain inside the skull, damaging the blood vessels connecting brain and skull and causing bleeding — a pattern that lines up with the typical medical mechanism behind brain hemorrhage. On the other hand, since the vast majority of riders on the same coaster showed no ill effects, opinion split between those who saw it as “just a rare coincidence of two isolated accidents” and those who argued that two incidents in such a short span warrants scrutiny of the park’s safety management. That said, the report doesn’t include technical details like peak G-force figures, so whether the cause truly lies in the ride’s design can’t be determined from the information in this article alone.

    'Once in a while.'

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Micro Magic” is a frozen French fry brand Otsuka Foods has run for many years, and the thread drew reactions from people old enough to remember its classic TV commercials. The real point of debate was how lifting the ban on importing fresh potatoes would affect future prices — opinions split between those expecting outright price drops and those who figured it would only remove the risk of hikes during bad harvests. High-heat cooking methods like deep-frying are known to produce acrylamide, a compound some commenters worried about health-wise. That said, it’s worth noting that acrylamide levels and their health risk vary by cooking method and product, and no specific figures or sourcing were offered in the thread itself.

  • Roman Space Telescope Launches Successfully — The 3-Month Gauntlet Before Science Begins

NASA’s next-generation space telescope, the “Nancy Grace Roman,” launched on August 30, 2026 (U.S. time; 8:26 PM Japan time that same day), successfully separating from its Falcon Heavy rocket and establishing communications. Its destination is the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, about 1.6 million km from Earth, and it will spend roughly three months getting there while its instruments are powered up, checked out, and calibrated. Though it shares Hubble’s 2.4m primary mirror diameter, its field of view is over 100 times wider and its survey speed up to 1,000 times faster, making it a flagship mission expected to shed light on the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. On 5ch’s science news+ thread, posters discussed how it differs from JWST and Japan’s role in the mission (JAXA’s contribution of coronagraph optics, and data reception at the Misasa ground station in Nagano Prefecture).

Wait, isn't THIS one Hubble II? They've got the same mirror after all.

    >>Liftoff was at 7:26 AM U.S. Eastern Daylight Time (8:26 PM Japan time). Roman established communications 7 minutes later, and separated from the Falcon Heavy's second stage 31 minutes after launch. It's now headed toward an orbit near the Sun-Earth L2 point, roughly 1 million miles (about 1.6 million km) from Earth.

So it's moving at high speed, huh.

Just a number — sorry, that was an anchor mistake (wrong reply link).

Here's what you need to know about NASA's successful launch of the "Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope" and the observing power and results it's expected to deliver
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched on August 30, 2026 (U.S. time). Here's a look at how this next-generation space telescope aims to tackle the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter.

    >>The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has the same 2.4m primary mirror diameter as the Hubble Space Telescope. Its near-infrared sensitivity and resolution are comparable to Hubble's, but a single observation can capture at least 100 times the area. NASA says that thanks to this wide field of view, it can survey the sky up to 1,000 times faster.

After successfully separating from the rocket, it's now headed toward the Sun-Earth L2 point, about 1.5 million km from Earth.

    Re: #37

    >>Roman will spend about three months after launch reaching the area near L2, during which its instruments will be powered on, checked out, and calibrated. The primary science mission is planned to run for five years, with the design allowing for a possible five-year extension. Observational data will, in principle, be made public after processing, available for researchers worldwide to use.

    >>Japan is also participating in the mission. JAXA and others are providing optical elements for the coronagraph, and the Misasa Deep Space Station in Nagano Prefecture is set to receive up to about 25% of the observational data. Coordinated observations with the Subaru Telescope, operated by Japan's National Astronomical Observatory in Hawaii, are also planned — 100 nights' worth starting in 2027.

    Re: #42

    >>According to NASA, the observational data generated during the primary mission is expected to reach roughly 20 petabytes. Beyond examining individual celestial objects one by one, Roman's defining feature is the ability to statistically analyze all that data as one massive dataset.

Background and key points of the discussion

The Roman Space Telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy, who also helped plan the Hubble mission. Its primary mirror is the same 2.4m diameter as Hubble’s, but its field of view is over 100 times larger, letting it capture wide swaths of sky in a single, short exposure — so the “JWST successor” label that came up in the thread isn’t quite right; it’s better understood as a wide-field version of Hubble. Its destination, the Sun-Earth L2 point, is a gravitationally stable spot about 1.6 million km from Earth that’s easy to shield from sunlight, making it ideal for keeping a telescope cool — which is also why JWST sits in the same orbit. The three months between launch and the start of science operations are set aside for attitude control, thermal stabilization of the instruments, and calibration — a window in which past telescopes have sometimes turned up problems. Japan is also playing a role in the mission’s operations: JAXA is providing optical elements for the coronagraph, and the Misasa Deep Space Station in Nagano Prefecture is set to receive up to 25% of the observational data.
