  • GTA6 Runs Native 1440p/30fps Even on Base PS5 — 5ch: ‘My Pro’s Value Just Went Up, LMAO’

Analysis by overseas outlet Digital Foundry has revealed that GTA6 runs at native 1440p/30fps on the base PS5, without relying on any upscaling. The fact that hardware nearly six years old can deliver this level of visual quality drew surprise on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, and the discussion soon expanded to whether a 60fps performance mode exists, how it compares to the PC version, and the PS5-vs-Xbox pre-order ratio — turning the thread into a wide-ranging mix of technical talk and sales speculation.

Honestly it's impressive this quality runs at even 30fps on a 6-year-old console.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

GTA6 is Rockstar Games’ latest title, slated for release on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Digital Foundry is an overseas outlet well known for its visual analysis, regularly publishing articles that measure actual hardware performance in terms of frame rate and resolution — and this report’s claim of “native 1440p/30fps without upscaling” is based on that kind of hands-on analysis. The finding applies to the base PS5 model, which is distinct from how the higher-end PS5 Pro performs, though some posts in the thread conflated the two. It’s also worth noting that the cited figure — “PS5 version pre-orders up 606%” — comes from a specific retailer’s pre-order data mentioned in a separate thread, not official sales figures or final shipment numbers. Whether a 60fps performance mode exists remains unconfirmed at this time, and the heavy CPU demands typical of big open-world titles are thought to be a factor.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “GTA6, No Upscaling.”

  • 1% of the Modern Human Genome Traced to a Mystery Human Species — 5ch: “Turns Out We Were Getting Around Even Before Leaving Africa”

A research team at the University of California, Berkeley has revealed that about 1% of the modern human genome comes from a “mystery human” that was neither Neanderthal nor Denisovan. That proportion rivals the amount of Neanderthal DNA carried by non-African populations, and traces of it turned up in European, Asian, and African populations alike. The study used a new method called TRACE, which identifies signs of interbreeding without relying on reference genomes from ancient humans. In the 5ch thread, posters speculated about the identity of this “mystery human” and when the interbreeding occurred, while others chimed in with detailed knowledge of Denisovan and Neanderthal admixture history and floated candidate fossil species like Homo naledi.

A study conducted at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in the US has found that roughly 1 percent of the modern human genome was inherited from a “mystery human” that was neither Neanderthal nor Denisovan.

That 1 percent figure is comparable to the amount of Neanderthal-derived DNA found in non-African populations.

What’s more, these fragments turned up in Europe, Asia, and Africa alike.

    – Africans carry introgression from an ancient lineage that split off 830,000 years ago, leaving traces in all modern humans.
    – The archaic humans that interbred with Denisovans belong to a lineage that split off 1.77 million years ago, leaving traces in East Asians, Oceanians, and Native Americans.

Sorry to disappoint, but Japanese people are the same.
Asians interbred with Denisovans around 50,000 years ago, and those Denisovans had themselves interbred with a different archaic Asian human lineage that split off about 1.77 million years ago.
So that Homo erectus-like DNA is present in East Eurasians too. The Jomon people only carried a tiny amount of it.
But modern Japanese people actually carry a bit more of that archaic DNA than the Jomon did.

    Re: #135
Fossils have been dug up, they're just too old to yield readable DNA. The oldest human genome recovered so far dates to 430,000 years ago, and even that's only partial.
High-quality genomes go back 200,000 years for Denisovans and 120,000 years for Neanderthals.
What this study found is that a mystery human lineage that split off 830,000 years ago in Africa interbred with the ancestors of modern humans living in Africa around 300,000 years ago.

Actually, that doesn't seem to be the case. According to a paper by Japanese researchers just published on August 16, 2026, two Denisovan individuals found on Taiwan's Penghu Islands — believed to have interbred with the Paleolithic ancestors of the Jomon people — were remarkably tall.

Honestly, this country hasn't changed since the Kojiki (Japan's oldest chronicle, full of myth) — we're just Homo sapiens who love a good fantasy.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s well known that Neanderthal DNA makes up roughly 1-2% of the genomes of non-African populations, but what this new study revealed is something different: traces of an unknown human population with no surviving fossils or directly sequenced DNA. The method used, called an “ancestral recombination graph” (ARG), is novel in that it can infer past interbreeding from the recombination patterns preserved within living human populations, even without directly reading DNA from ancient bones. In the thread, some posters pointed out how this differs from a similar “ghost population” study published in 2020, while others floated candidate interbreeding partners such as Homo naledi, a hominin on a side branch of the family tree. Overall, commenters tended to frame this less as a brand-new discovery and more as a methodological advance. Note: this topic tends to veer into Japan-Korea rivalry territory on 5ch’s Newsplus board, and this thread was no exception, with a number of posts bringing in inappropriate ethnic remarks — those have been excluded from this article.

  • Shohei Ohtani Homerless in 10 Straight Games, Batting .116 as Pitching Return Stalls — US Media Asks ‘When’s He Going on the IL?’

Dodgers-focused outlet “Dodgers Digest” published a piece on August 31 addressing the timing of Shohei Ohtani’s stint on the injured list (IL). Since hitting his 30th home run against the Rockies on August 18, Ohtani has gone homerless in 10 games and 50 plate appearances, batting a brutal .116 (5-for-43) with zero RBIs. With his return to pitching now up in the air due to the state of his left knee and biceps, some see a link between the strain of resuming throwing and his batting slump. On the 5channel sports-tabloid board Geinou/Sports Sokuhou+, commenters split between those pointing to fatigue from continuing two-way play and those bluntly chalking it up to decline.

[Dodgers] Shohei Ohtani Homerless in 10 Games, Batting .116 — With Pitching Return Up in the Air, “When’s He Going on the IL?” Asks US Report

Dodgers-focused outlet “Dodgers Digest” published an article on the 31st (September 1 Japan time) about Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani (32) titled “When Will the Dodgers Convince Shohei Ohtani to Go on the Injured List (IL)?”

With his return to the mound shelved out of consideration for the state of his left knee and biceps, Ohtani hit his 30th home run in his second at-bat against the Rockies on the 18th (19th Japan time), but has gone completely dry since — homerless in 10 games and 50 plate appearances, batting just .116 (5-for-43) with zero RBIs. The toll of his throwing program is being cited as a possible cause.

    Re: #63
Ohtani sleeps more than 10 hours a day.
That's because he's pushing his body to an abnormal degree.
The truth is he needs over 10 hours of sleep just to hold up.
A 20-something Ohtani could still take that kind of strain.
    But a 32-year-old Ohtani can't.
Two-way baseball is something only a guy in his 20s could pull off — really, nobody else can do it at all — and he shouldn't keep clinging to it.
Even Babe Ruth gave it up. It's about time Ohtani learned that lesson the hard way.

    Background and Talking Points

Going on the IL (injured list) doesn’t necessarily mean a serious injury — teams often use it strategically late in the season to get a player back into shape, and the US media report was framed with that in mind. Ohtani underwent right elbow surgery in 2023, and concerns that balancing pitching and hitting as a two-way player is piling extra strain on his body have been raised before. In the thread, opinion split between the view that “the load of resuming pitching is dragging down his hitting” and the view that “this is just age-appropriate decline for a 32-year-old,” with comparisons drawn to the late careers of Hideki Matsui and Ichiro. That said, a .116 batting average alone can’t settle the question of whether two-way play still makes sense or what comes next — it’s worth keeping the recent 10-game slump separate from any long-term read on his ability, and that distinction was kept in mind in putting this piece together.

  • Voice Actress Yui Odagiri Announces Agency Departure and Retirement — 5ch: ‘It’s a Brutal Industry’

Voice actress Yui Odagiri announced on August 31, 2026 that she is leaving her talent agency, 81 Produce, and retiring from voice acting altogether. In her statement, she said the decision was one she reached only “after a great deal of soul-searching and agonizing thought.” On 5ch, thread after thread pointed to the harsh reality that even a background in the All Japan Voice Actor Contest hadn’t been enough to secure her steady work, with posters also weighing in on the industry-wide imbalance of job opportunities and the “networking” culture around drinking parties — sparking a broader debate about the industry’s structure.

    Nikkan Sports [September 1, 2026, 9:36 AM]

Voice actress Yui Odagiri updated her account on X by the 1st, announcing that she has left her talent agency and is retiring from voice acting.

In a published statement, she said: “As of August 31, 2026, I, Yui Odagiri, am leaving 81 Produce and, along with that, retiring from my career as a voice actress.” She continued, “I sincerely apologize for the suddenness of this announcement, for the surprise it may have caused, and for not being able to give proper advance notice.”

From an interview with a female voice actress who once retired and has since made a comeback:

    >This isn't unique to voice acting, I think it's the same in general society too, but especially before COVID there were tons of drinking parties. Voice actors also had to go out to those drinking parties themselves to hunt for work.
    >If you get invited, you have to go, and sadly, if you don't go drinking, you don't get work.
    >I was never much of a drinker, and I really hated having to flatter people, drink along with them, and get made to sing at those parties. Some girls ended up mentally breaking down from that environment.
    >There's just so much of that for women. Honestly, no voice actress quits because she got sick of the actual voice acting work. It's always that networking side of it. Everyone quits because they hate having to sell themselves.

This is exactly why Hikasa is so strong in this industry. She's said to show up at every drinking party and wrap party there is.

She herself has said, 'No matter how busy I am, if I can swing by even just to say hello between jobs, I'll go.' Her mindset is, 'They specifically asked for me, so I have no reason to turn it down.'

Having to go to drinking parties even though it's not the actual job is depressing — the typical indoor otaku type just can't compete on that front.

Let me teach you how to handle that situation:

don't stick your beak in where it's not needed.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The voice acting industry sees a steady stream of new debuts, but the bulk of the work is said to be structurally concentrated among a small pool of already-popular stars — meaning that even a track record of success in an official contest doesn’t guarantee a steady stream of work afterward. On the thread, many posters, taking this structure into account, saw Odagiri’s decision as “a reasonable call in a brutal industry.” Where opinion split was over how much the “networking” that happens at drinking parties and the like actually determines whether someone gets work. Some framed it as a matter of individual aptitude, while others saw it as a structural burden that tends to fall disproportionately on female voice actors, and the discussion dug deep into the industry’s inner workings. The fact that even passing through a gateway like the All Japan Voice Actor Contest doesn’t guarantee a steady flow of work afterward is a reality that’s hard to grasp from the news article alone.

It’s been revealed that Juice=Juice’s Ebata Hisaki will appear as a member of the “Strongest Idol Corps” on TV Asahi’s Sandwichman’s World Shock-Video Corp!, airing September 9. Background and Key Points

Juice=Juice has increasingly been landing variety-show appearances in recent years, with Ebata Hisaki at the center of that trend, and this appearance on Sandwichman’s World Shock-Video Corp! is an extension of it. Beyond the official announcement, the thread doesn’t have further details on exactly how the show plans to use Ebata as part of the “Strongest Idol Corps.” Opinions in the thread were split between those welcoming Ebata’s rising individual profile and those concerned about the widening gap in media exposure among group members — posts #108 and #123 pointed out that some members haven’t even been picked for lineups like Oha Suta. It’s also worth noting that the costume-photo comparisons come from shots featuring other groups, not something that reflects Ebata’s own creative input.

  • 35.1% of Young People Say They Don’t Plan to Marry — Backlash Erupts Over Suzuki Sarina’s ‘Too Affluent’ Comment

In the first large-scale survey of its kind, Japan’s Children and Families Agency polled 100,000 young people aged 15 to 39 and found that 35.1% of unmarried respondents — roughly one in three — said they “don’t intend to marry.” When the results were reported on TBS’s talk show “Gogosma” on the 1st, commentator Suzuki Sarina offered her take: “People have gotten too affluent — they’re plenty happy even without romance.” On 5channel’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, that “too affluent to marry” framing drew a wave of pushback, with posters firing back things like “We’re not affluent — we’re getting poorer by the day.” Opinions split over whether the real reason people aren’t marrying is a lack of financial breathing room or a shift in values.

Suzuki Sarina on survey showing 35.1% of young people “don’t intend to marry”: “They’ve gotten too affluent, plenty happy even without romance…”

On the TBS variety/info show “Gogosma — GO GO! Smile!” (weekdays, 1:55 PM), which aired on the 1st, it was reported that the Children and Families Agency’s first large-scale survey of young people found that roughly one in three unmarried young people believe they “don’t intend to marry.”

There are tens of thousands of people in Japan right now happily doing that and enjoying their oshikatsu (fan/idol support activities) on the side!

There was a piece saying that, in a 100-year lifespan, expecting to spend the rest of your life with someone you happened to fall for during just two or three years in your 20s goes against the laws of nature.

Its conclusion: "It only works if you pile patience on patience, endurance on endurance, give up your freedom, and throw away a lot of richness — money, time, mental well-being, and more."

It also said your happiness index tanks the moment you're supporting a jobless partner, like a stay-at-home spouse.
It's true that after 10 years, most married couples have lost the love between them.
A life where you have to live together forever while gritting your teeth and irritated might really be the unhappiest kind of life.

In the Meiji era, Japan imported patriarchy from Britain.
The Beatles' George Harrison ordered his wife to stay home and be a housewife, she hated it, and Eric Clapton ended up stealing her from him lol

    Background and Points of Debate

This survey by the Children and Families Agency is the government’s first large-scale attempt to gauge young people’s attitudes toward marriage, and financial circumstances are reportedly the most commonly cited reason for not marrying. The thread’s split in opinion centers on a clash between the view Suzuki Sarina’s comment reflects — that “spiritual richness” matters more — and the counterargument that “material living standards are actually getting worse.” Posters also pointed out that Japan was only a “universal marriage society” for roughly 20 years, from the 1950s-60s through around 1975; that during the Edo period, it was normal for anyone besides the eldest son to remain unmarried; and that divorce was actually more common in the Meiji era and prewar years than it is today. Neither the original article nor the TV segment mentioned the view that the very image of “marriage as a lifelong partnership” is a relatively recent idea, one popularized through postwar television and film — worth keeping in mind, since simply framing the drift away from marriage as “a uniquely recent phenomenon” risks missing the bigger picture.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Entertainment & Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] 35.1% of Young People ‘Don’t Intend to Marry’ — Suzuki Sarina on Survey Results: ‘They’ve Gotten Too Affluent, Plenty Happy Even Without Romance…’“.

  • Welfare Recipient Blows ¥20,000 at Pachi-Slot on Payment Day — 5ch: ‘Get Your Life Together’

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board (なんでも実況G) started by an original poster (OP) who admitted to losing ¥20,000 playing pachi-slot on the very day their welfare payment came in. According to OP, the money had only just been deposited that day, with several more days to go before the next payment. The thread filled with voices scolding OP to “live a bit more responsibly,” while others questioned the system itself, asking “if you can afford to gamble, do you even need welfare?” OP, for their part, said “pachi-slot is my only reason to live” and “I want to win it back,” and also revealed they suffer from depression and a developmental disorder. The thread turned into a back-and-forth of defense and criticism, fueled by differing payment dates and disagreement over how welfare money should be spent.

Unlike other SANKYO cabinets, that machine can't combine pre-read heat with an early tell, and the early tell's reliability is under 40%, so a lot of players just ignore it.

    Re: #121
I'm not young anymore, and I have depression and a developmental disorder

    Background and Talking Points

Welfare payment dates vary by municipality, and thread replies were split between the 3rd, the 5th, the start of the month, and the 15th of even-numbered months (some commenters even confused the 15th-of-the-month payout with pension day). Under Japan’s Public Assistance Act, there’s no rule restricting how recipients spend their benefits once paid, so spending it on pachinko or slots isn’t illegal in itself. That’s fueled a recurring clash between critics who argue “if you can afford to gamble, you don’t need welfare” and those who say how the money is spent is a matter of personal freedom — and this thread is just the latest replay of that argument. OP’s disclosure of depression and a developmental disorder hints at the harder realities facing recipients who struggle to work, but overall the thread leaned more toward self-deprecating jokes and banter than serious debate.

  • PC Parts Brand “Kuroutoshikou” Rebrands as “Crowxis” — Sunglasses Mascot Retired After 25 Years

According to a report from ITmedia, PC parts brand Kuroutoshikou (玄人志向, lit. “oriented toward the discerning/expert user”) is renaming itself “Crowxis” to mark its 25th anniversary — and retiring the deadpan, sunglasses-wearing “old guy” mascot that has served as its logo for decades. The news set off a lively thread on 5ch’s Business News+ board, drawing everything from nostalgia for the brand’s old nickname “Kuroshiko,” to gripes about the new logo’s design, to worries that the new name will be mistaken for some random overseas or Chinese knockoff brand. A running gag comparing the mascot’s face to a Japanese musician also made repeated appearances, keeping things lively.

The 3-year warranty was generous — though in the end I couldn't resist upgrading every single year anyway.

    Background and Talking Points

Kuroutoshikou is a long-running brand of DIY PC components, long recognizable by its deadpan, sunglasses-wearing “old guy” mascot logo. The switch to “Crowxis” appears to be a rebranding timed to the company’s 25th anniversary, and the move toward a Western-style English name mirrors a broader trend among Japanese PC peripheral makers with an eye on overseas markets. Thread opinion split mainly over the new logo’s design — comments dismissing it as “chuuni” (over-the-top, edgy design in a self-consciously adolescent style) or simply tacky were common, while almost nobody spoke up in favor of the plain English wordmark. The fact that the nickname “Kuroshiko” had become so entrenched also drove a lot of the discomfort with the new name. At the same time, longtime customers brought up warranty terms and product specs just as often as the rebrand itself, suggesting plenty of users care more about substance than branding. A running joke likening the mascot’s face to musician Naoto Kine of TM NETWORK also resurfaced repeatedly — a well-worn meme about the logo’s appearance, not a comment on the actual person, and should be read as such.

  • GSDF Soldier Suspended 6 Months for Stabbing Junior With His Own Real Knife — 5ch: ‘A 6-Month Suspension? This Is Beyond Broken’

It has come to light that a 37-year-old Ground Self-Defense Force sergeant (3rd Class) formerly assigned to the 2nd Artillery Regiment at the Asahikawa base brought a real, personal knife to an off-duty mock combat training session in March 2021, misjudged the distance, and stabbed a junior soldier, leaving him with an injury that took about two weeks to heal. The GSDF handed the soldier a six-month suspension as of September 1. The incident only came to light in January 2024 — roughly three years later — after another soldier not directly involved raised it with a superior, and it then took a further two and a half years to reach the disciplinary decision. On 5ch, commenters repeatedly questioned why it took so long to uncover and punish the incident despite someone being injured, and expressed shock that a personal blade — not training equipment — had been used.

A Ground Self-Defense Force soldier belonging to the 2nd Artillery Regiment at the Asahikawa base in Asahikawa City has received disciplinary punishment for accidentally stabbing a junior soldier with a real knife during mock combat training.

The soldier handed the six-month suspension, effective September 1, is a 37-year-old Sergeant (3rd Class) from the 2nd Artillery Regiment.

According to the GSDF, in March 2021 the sergeant brought out a real knife during an off-duty mock combat training session, misjudged the distance, and "stabbed" a junior soldier, causing an injury that took two weeks to heal.

    Re: #222
Well, it was his personal knife to begin with, so…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Disciplinary cases within the Self-Defense Forces tend to take a long time to investigate, and in this instance the matter only surfaced because a soldier not directly involved reported it to a superior — part of why so much time elapsed between the incident (March 2021), its discovery (January 2024), and the disciplinary action (September 2026). Opinions on the thread split mainly over two points: ‘why did it take this long to come out,’ and ‘why wasn’t this prosecuted as a violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law, given that a personal blade was brought into a training setting.’ Some suspected a cover-up or special treatment, while others argued that a long timeline isn’t unusual given how internal investigations work. Readers should note that what’s being reported isn’t an official unit training exercise but an unofficial, off-duty ‘mock combat training’ session; that the knife used was personal property rather than issued equipment; and that the victim’s injury took about two weeks to heal. The names of both the offender and the victim, along with the specifics of their relationship within the unit, have not been made public, so the details can’t be confirmed beyond what’s in the source article.

    10AnonymousSep 1, 2026 22:50
Even if a woman doesn't groom, guys probably won't say anything about it directly.
If anything, isn't the body hair police made up entirely of women?

    Re: #10
I've had guys comment on me NOT having something. "Oh, you don't have hair on your fingers!"
Also things like "Wow, your nostrils are such a nice shape!"

I'm not trying to cry sexual harassment, but realizing men notice stuff like that leaves me half exasperated, half creeped out.

Women look at your face and fashion instead — stuff like "You're actually really pretty when you look closely," "Did you get new shoes?", "Oh, you curled your hair! What's the occasion?"

    Re: #10
I think men actually have it harsher. Especially armpit hair — if there's even a little stubble, guys get dragged online for it.

Butt-hair burger (a notorious gross meme photo from way back)

    Re: #14
When that whole thing blew up, it was guys who don't actually know real women who made a big fuss about it. Honestly, that much is pretty normal…
    17AnonymousSep 1, 2026 22:54
Can I say one thing about the rare case where a woman in a rush, wearing a miniskirt, has pubic hair peeking out from her underwear through the gap? I always want to say "wear something a bit longer," but I keep my mouth shut.

Doesn't bother me unless you're staring intently.
    22AnonymousSep 1, 2026 22:56
Crooked-teeth harassment is a thing now too. It's gotten ridiculous.

    Re: #22
Healthy teeth on Asian people are naturally more yellowish because of enamel differences, not pure white — it's sad seeing celebrities get bashed for not whitening.

    Re: #22
I wish something could be done about people capping their teeth with pure-white ceramics that don't match the size of their mouth. Whether their mouth's open or closed, it just doesn't sit right with the rest of their face — even when they smile it looks so artificial it's unsettling.

In a foreign drama I watched recently, an actress in her early twenties had full-on bushy armpit hair — it was shocking. She's apparently from Germany.

When I went to China, the local women had pretty bushy armpit hair too.

Back in the day there was a band with a female vocalist named Nena who had armpit hair too (Nena — the German singer known for "99 Luftballons").

A moderate amount of pubic hair is best. No comment on any other body hair, though.

A completely bare "paipan" is a turnoff (paipan = totally shaved). Bushy is fine too lol

About on par with the butt-hair burger, maybe lol

2channelers back then were all so full of life, huh.

If you add "cute" on top of that, it's perfect. That's exactly why she got popular lol
    52AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:10
Why are armpits so popular with guys anyway?

    Re: #52
Because it's a legally exposable erogenous zone.
    80AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:16
Hair growing on the back of the neck, though — not really into that.

I'm into the big hairy "bear" type — hairy all the way down the back and shoulders, built like a tank.
    83AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:17
It's not that women are obligated to groom — checking for it is really just somebody's personal fetish, isn't it.
    85AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:19
    Re: #83
Then don't go staring at old guys' shin hair either lol
    154AnonymousSep 1, 2026 23:48

Honestly, why shouldn't women just grow it out too? Plenty of American influencers promote leaving it au naturel under the banner of "self-love" (loving yourself as you are).
Not growing it out is really just about "not being able to handle it personally," isn't it?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original article is a column by mi-mollet’s Hioka, based on a BBC English-language piece, discussing the “body hair police” phenomenon — where women’s body hair gets zoomed in on and mocked — and the gender asymmetry in how men and women get called out for it. On 5ch, reactions split between the view that “it’s mainly women pointing out other women’s body hair” and the counter-argument that “men’s armpit-hair grooming gets scrutinized even more harshly online,” so the thread never settled into a simple men-vs-women fight. It also branched into grooming pressures beyond body hair, like teeth whitening and pressure to get ceramic veneers — points that go beyond the original article and reflect where 5ch users expanded the discussion on their own. Note that whether to remove body hair is ultimately a personal choice, and neither this article nor the thread is meant to endorse any particular grooming practice.
