  • ‘He’s completely finished,’ fans say — Shohei Ohtani’s prolonged slump and injuries cast a shadow over his two-way future

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the September 2 (local time) game against the Cardinals, and the team lost 6-8 in 10 innings. Tokyo Sports reports that criticism of Ohtani has intensified in the US following the game. On 5ch threads, opinions split between those praising his return from injury and continued two-way play — “8 wins and 30 home runs is plenty” — and harsher takes calling the season’s trajectory concerning, given a strong first half followed by a second-half slide. Discussion continued without a clear consensus on whether the slump stems from his injury or changes in his personal life.

Four strikeouts was just the entry point to something more unsettling. Dodgers pitcher-hitter Shohei Ohtani (32) went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the Cardinals game at home at Dodger Stadium on the 2nd (the 3rd in Japan time), and the team lost 6-8 in 10 innings. But what’s stirring up more talk in the US than the result itself is the harsh language now being directed at Ohtani.

Getting pushed too hard by 'Rushing' and cranking it up to throw 160 km/h (99 mph)
is looking like it was the last we'll see of unicorn Ohtani

Background and key points of the debate

Ohtani is in the middle of an unusual season, trying to balance his return from injury as a pitcher with continuing as a two-way player. In the September 2 game against the Cardinals, he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, and the team lost in extra innings. Tokyo Sports reports that US media reaction has taken on a “he’s completely finished” tone. On the thread, opinions split between those defending his 8 wins and 30 home runs as a solid result for his first year back on the mound, and those who took issue with the poor sequencing — a strong first half followed by a second-half collapse. As for the cause of the slump, whether it’s the injury or a change in his personal life, posters on the thread have no way to directly confirm his condition, so it’s worth noting that this remains speculation either way. Given that other star players like Judge and Trout also take rest days regularly, the somewhat harsher scrutiny directed at Ohtani likely reflects the sheer size of his contract and the unusually high expectations tied to his status as a two-way player.

  • Matchmaking Agency’s ‘35,953 Graduates’ Claim Sparks ‘Why an Odd Number?’ Backlash — We Asked Them Why

A matchmaking agency’s ad boasting “35,953 graduates so far” drew a wave of pushback on 5ch, with users asking “why is that an odd number?” When we contacted the operating company, they explained that the figure includes not only couples who were both members of their own service, but also cases where one member married someone from a different matchmaking agency. On the thread, comments like “counting that seems off” and “apparently prep schools do the same thing, adding in numbers from affiliated schools” spread doubt about the ‘successful match’ metric itself. On the other hand, some cooler-headed users pointed out that “an odd number is plausible given remarriages and other possibilities,” making the real question how accurately the figure reflects reality.

A matchmaking agency’s advertisement claiming “35,953 people have graduated from matchmaking so far” drew a flood of comments asking “why is that an odd number?” The operating company explained that the figure “also includes cases where a member married someone from a different matchmaking agency.”

Even with an agency, half the intros get rejected and the other half is just matching, dates, and follow-up contact, so paying that high a fee doesn't feel like it's worth all that much
    29AnonymousSep 3, 2026 12:35
To begin with, people who can get married through an agency are the type who could've gotten married without one anyway

Feels like that's actually the majority, if anything. I'm one of them too.
Matchmaking agencies are harder than a normal love marriage — if you can't manage to fall in love and marry on your own, an agency won't work for you either, since the other side judges you on your 'specs' right off the bat. If anything, agencies set a higher bar than dating for love.
    34AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:45
    Re: #31
Wait, if a member of your company matches with a member of another company, only one person actually 'married through' your company, right?
But the advice and partner selection for your own member was still handled by your own service.
    35AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:01
LMAO they're counting people who married non-members www
    36AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:20

Probably just a number they made up on the spot
    40AnonymousSep 4, 2026 07:17
Bet some of them married the staff

    Background and Key Issues

There’s no standardized definition for terms like “successful match” or “graduate” in the matchmaking industry — each company defines them differently. When a figure combines not just in-house matches but also matches with members of other agencies, as in this case, it becomes a distorted measure of “how good this particular agency actually is.” This mirrors a structure raised in the thread regarding prep schools, which similarly roll in the results of affiliated schools when reporting pass numbers — a tactic of touting a big headline figure without clearly disclosing the base population or counting method that shows up in other industries too. The thread also pointed out that “graduates” may include not just successful matches but people who gave up on matchmaking and left the service, though the company’s explanation doesn’t clarify that breakdown. What’s easy for readers to misunderstand is that a high graduate count doesn’t automatically mean a high success rate — the number worth comparing is the success rate relative to total membership, and judging a service’s quality on a simple cumulative headcount alone would be premature.

    Background and Discussion Points

“Otonaribu” is a music-focused segment hosted by Kikuchi Fuma, and since guests sometimes perform songs on it, the thread debated whether this appearance would lean more toward variety-show banter or an actual live performance. Juice=Juice digitally released their collaboration track with Harami-chan, “Moretemi Amore,” on September 4, and also has a Yokohama Arena concert coming up, and the overlap of announcements around this period fed into commenters’ sense that “the news just keeps coming.” CUTIE STREET, meanwhile, belongs to a different talent agency and is said to have had few previous chances to appear alongside Hello! Project acts including Juice=Juice, which led some posters to tie this pairing to a shift in the relationship between the two agencies — though that’s purely fan speculation, not an official explanation. Whether the show leans toward a reality-style format or centers on live performances remains unconfirmed ahead of the broadcast.

  • Mechanics Stuck at ¥3.47M Salaries Despite Severe Labor Shortage — Some Even Take Pay Cuts by Switching Jobs

Despite a severe labor shortage — the effective job-openings-to-applicants ratio for auto mechanics stands at 5.46 — the average salary offered is just ¥3.47 million, a full ¥1.53 million short of the ¥5 million job seekers want. Worse, among veteran mechanics already earning over ¥5 million, switching jobs can actually mean a pay cut — a “reversal phenomenon.” On 5channel, a thread debated why wages won’t rise despite the shortage, touching on low barriers to entry, work centered on parts-swapping rather than repair, and comparisons to doctors.

The auto mechanic trade remains in a severe labor shortage, with an effective job-openings ratio of 5.46. Yet the average offered salary of ¥3.47 million falls ¥1.53 million short of the ¥5 million mechanics hope for, and veterans already earning over ¥5 million can actually see their pay drop if they switch jobs. Even as advancing technology demands more specialized skills, why isn’t experience being rewarded? A look at the structural problems in this licensed trade’s job market.

If you're tired of city life.
Remote islands have no trains so a car is essential, but if there's no repair shop on the island, you can't easily get things fixed when they break.
That's why auto mechanics are highly valued on remote islands.

The accurate way to put it is: pay is low because a lot of people (companies) want to do it, and they actually can
Same structure as why restaurant industry pay is low

Right. Doctors are regulated to only allow so many per population

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The issue of mechanics’ salaries isn’t simply a matter of “get certified and you’ll be rewarded” — low barriers to entry are a structural factor. If, like the medical profession, there were a system limiting the number of licensed practitioners, supply would be restricted and wages would rise. But becoming a mechanic is relatively easy, often just requiring graduation from a vocational school, and companies can secure workers without capital investment — so wages stay low even amid a chronic labor shortage. In the thread, this was framed the same way as hairstylists and the restaurant industry: “industries a lot of people want to enter get squeezed on pay.” But others pushed back, arguing that “a shortage doesn’t necessarily mean lots of people want the job,” splitting opinion on whether the root cause is excess demand or ease of entry. The thread also challenged the assumption that “mechanics work no overtime and get two-day weekends,” with one poster recalling quitting the trade in the 1990s over long hours and low pay — highlighting a gap between image and reality. Some also pointed out that in recent years, repair work has shifted mostly to swapping out whole units rather than actual repair, meaning skilled “repair technique” itself is less valued — cited as another reason mechanics get the short end of the stick.

  • Shock Lille Signing Ayase Ueda Scores Super-Sub Winner in Debut — Now on 4 Straight Games With a Goal Since Leaving the Netherlands

Japan international forward Ayase Ueda (28), who made a shock move from the Netherlands to Ligue 1 side Lille, came off the bench against Toulouse on the 3rd and scored the winning goal. It marked his fourth straight game with a goal since joining, and Lille won 1-0. On the thread, discussion centered on teammate Olivier Giroud’s expressionless reaction after the goal, praise for Ueda’s quick results in his new surroundings, and a split of opinions over the overall standard of Ligue 1.

    Background and Talking Points

Ayase Ueda made a shock transfer this summer from Feyenoord in the Netherlands to Ligue 1 side Lille. At his previous club he kept up his scoring output but had inconsistent playing time, so his goal off the bench in his very first match after the move drew attention as a sign of how quickly he’s settling into his new surroundings. Where opinion in the thread split was over the standing of Ligue 1 itself. With recent years bringing shrinking broadcast deals and a steady outflow of top talent, some argued the league’s status among the big five has slipped, while others countered that performing near the top of France is plenty impressive on its own. It’s also worth noting that the comment about teammate Giroud looking expressionless was one poster’s subjective observation, and other posts in the thread noted the two were seen laughing together after the match. And the stat showing Ueda lost all six of his duels is just from this single matchday — it shouldn’t be taken as a verdict on his season as a whole.

  • Chilled Crab Ramen at Azabu-Juban Summer Festival Sickens Diners — Stall Owner’s Restaurant Slapped with 7-Day Suspension

At a food stall during the “Azabu-Juban Nōryō Matsuri” (Azabu-Juban Summer Festival) in Tokyo, people who ate the “chilled crab ramen” sold there came down with food poisoning, prompting the stall owner to issue a public apology. Health department testing found more than just Salmonella in patients’ stool samples — Plesiomonas, diarrhea-causing E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus also turned up — meaning the outbreak can’t be pinned on a single pathogen. The owner, who ran the festival stall, also had his own restaurant hit with a 7-day business suspension and will be closed for the time being. On 5channel, users traded technical theories about the contamination route based on the mix of bacteria found, alongside suspicions about cooking outdoors in blazing heat and how the crab itself had been handled.

    Looking at the sample data,
    it's not just "Salmonella" 🤮

    【Patient stool samples】
    🔹Salmonella: 31 samples
    🔹Plesiomonas: 9 samples
    🔹Diarrheagenic E. coli: 2 samples
    🔹Staphylococcus aureus: 1 sample

    【Staff stool samples】
    🔹Salmonella: 2 samples
    🔹Plesiomonas: 1 sample

It's not as simple as "tons of patients tested positive for Salmonella, case closed" 🤔

What really stands out is that Plesiomonas showed up in BOTH patients and staff 🧚

These two bugs come from different hosts — roughly speaking:
    🔹Salmonella → land animals
    🔺Plesiomonas → freshwater organisms

So this was probably cooked somewhere where "contamination from animal feces" and "freshwater-derived contamination" happened at the same time 🤮

Given it's Salmonella plus Plesiomonas (which is unusual), you can tell the cause was imported brackish-water crab.
That said, Salmonella and diarrheagenic E. coli are both classic "unsanitary poop" bacteria, and Staph aureus usually comes from cuts or wounds on a worker's hands. Basically: unsanitary imported ingredients, stored unsanitarily, handled by unsanitary staff — way too many different bacteria involved here lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A restaurant business suspension is an administrative penalty under Japan’s Food Sanitation Act, meant to halt operations until the causative agent and contamination route are identified. The focus here is that the bacteria found in patients’ stool wasn’t limited to a single species. Salmonella comes from land-animal feces, while Plesiomonas comes from freshwater environments — the two turning up together is an unusual combination that wouldn’t normally occur under standard food handling, which drew attention on the thread. There was also pushback against the assumption that “spoiled food should be obvious from its smell or taste,” with some pointing out that Salmonella itself doesn’t change a food’s flavor even as it multiplies — and that serving the dish cold, with no heating step, in blazing outdoor heat, was itself a risk factor. Note that posts making unverified personal attacks based on rumors about the owner’s background have been excluded from this article, since those claims couldn’t be confirmed. Pinning down the definitive cause and contamination route will require the results of the health department’s ongoing investigation, so readers should be cautious about treating the thread’s speculation as established fact.

  • Xbox Cloud Gaming Slapped With a 15-Hour Monthly Cap — Go Over, Pay Extra

Xbox Cloud Gaming has introduced a new 15-hour monthly cap on cloud play — a perk Game Pass Ultimate members had previously been able to use with essentially no limit. Microsoft points to the difficulty of scaling up server capacity as the reason, and going over the cap now means paying extra. The original article was briefly pulled before being republished with an added explanation of the new pay-as-you-go option, and on 5ch that back-and-forth fueled both “isn’t this basically a retreat” takes and comparisons to PlayStation’s cloud service.

Game Pass Cloud Gaming, previously usable with no time limit at all, now comes with a usage cap because scaling up server capacity is difficult

    Background and key debates

Xbox Cloud Gaming had long been marketed on the fact that Game Pass Ultimate members could use it with essentially no limit. This change introduces a 15-hour monthly cap, citing the cost of scaling up server capacity, and any usage beyond that switches to a pay-as-you-go extra charge. The article the thread first cited was taken down and later replaced with a version that added details about the pay-as-you-go option — likely why early comments questioned whether the news was even real.

Opinions in the thread split over whether to read this as a simple cost adjustment or as an early sign of Microsoft pulling back from cloud gaming — and from the Xbox hardware business more broadly. Commenters pointed to PlayStation’s cloud/Portal business reportedly being profitable while Xbox’s isn’t, using that as a point of comparison.

One point of confusion for readers is the “30 minutes a day” framing — that’s simply the 15-hour monthly cap divided evenly across 30 days, not an officially stated daily limit. The exact per-hour price for overage usage also hadn’t been confirmed as of the thread’s latest posts.

Freelance announcer Aiko Kaito (42) updated her Instagram on September 3, posting a photo of herself in a miniskirt captioned “after a certain photo shoot.” On 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+ board, plenty of favorable comments followed, like “She could easily still get married” and “Even at 50 or 60, there’ll be plenty of rich guys who’d want to marry Ai-chan” — but reactions weren’t all positive. Background and talking points

Aiko Kaito rose to popularity on Fuji TV’s information programs starting in the late 2000s before later going freelance as an announcer/talent. This post was a single photo on her own Instagram, captioned as taken “after a certain photo shoot,” and the original article’s headline used the slang term “zettai ryouiki” (“absolute territory” — the exposed-thigh zone between a skirt hem and thigh-high socks or boots). Opinions split in the thread over whether that headline actually matched what the photo showed, with some commenters who checked the post calling it a clickbait headline. Many comments also latched onto her age (42) and single status, mixing well-wishes for her to find marriage with remarks fixating on her age. It’s worth noting, though, that nothing in the thread offers any actual information about her dating or marriage plans — these are purely the posters’ own speculation and impressions.

※This article is an excerpt/summary based on the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Entertainment] 42-year-old Aiko Kaito’s miniskirt shot showing “zettai ryouiki” has fans transfixed! “She looks like a college girl,” “I’m done for,” “Unfairly cute”.”

  • FF7R Revelation: Pay +¥1,430 and Play the Whole Trilogy

Square Enix has announced that pre-ordering “FF7 Revelation” — normally priced at ¥9,900 (tax included) — for an extra ¥1,430 (bringing the total to ¥11,330) gets you the entire trilogy. The previous two entries, “Remake” and “Rebirth,” become downloadable and playable as soon as you pre-order. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the bonus itself was well received, but opinions split over concerns that Switch2 isn’t among the supported platforms, whether Switch2’s external storage (mostly 256GB models) could even hold all three games at once, and whether Revelation’s own ¥9,900 price tag is worth it.

“FFVII Revelation” is normally priced at ¥9,900 (tax included), but pre-ordering nets you the entire trilogy for just ¥1,430 more — a total of ¥11,330 (tax included).

The first two entries become downloadable and playable immediately after you pre-order.

    Re: #95
Playable from the moment you place the pre-order

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“FF7 Revelation” is the final chapter of the trilogy that began with “Remake” in 2020 and continued with “Rebirth” in 2024, with a standalone price of ¥9,900 (tax included). This pre-order bonus lets players access the entire trilogy, including the first two games, for just ¥1,430 more, with the first two becoming playable immediately after pre-ordering if bought digitally. On the thread, while the bonus itself was received favorably, most of the doubts centered on the fact that only PS5, Xbox, and PC platforms are eligible, with Switch2 left out. This is likely due to the Switch2 versions of “Remake” and “Rebirth” having already been released this year, as well as a technical constraint: most Switch2 external storage cards top out at 256GB, which could be exceeded if all three games are installed at once. There was also persistent skepticism over whether the content justifies the ¥9,900 price tag, splitting the thread’s opinion between those welcoming the deal and those questioning the price and platform support.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread: [FF7R] A great bundle appears letting you play the previous two games right away for +¥1,430 on top of Revelation’s price! [Godlike move].

She's massively unpopular with Gen Z, though
    4AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:26
Even Nobuteru Ishihara was won over by her

Tako-chan's popular with Aika Sawaguchi, Hello! Project's Nakatani, and plenty of other beauties

Guess once you get older, the pure, wholesome girls start to shine
    12AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:40
If anything, it's the young girls who go crazy for Yua-chan
    13AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:01
Well, Tako-chan is cute after all…

Can't get past how messy she is in her daily life

    Re: #49
Apparently she's finished tidying up her room now

Tako-chan's the type who grows on you the more you get to know her (like squid — the more you chew, the more flavor comes out)
Can't be helped that she's not an instant hit with newcomers

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Yua Kudo joined Juice=Juice on June 14, 2019, and according to a fan-compiled tenure list, she has one of the longer track records among current members. Her nickname “Tako-chan” comes from her own personality, and this particular thread was sparked when singer-songwriter Kohmi Hirose named her as a personal favorite. Opinions in the thread split mainly over the age makeup of her fanbase: some praised her strong appeal among older fans (“ojisama and obasama,” i.e., middle-aged men and women), while others noted that “she hasn’t gained much traction with Gen Z,” revealing a generational gap in how she’s perceived. In compiling this article, exchanges that used derogatory terms for fan groups or attacked other posters rather than discussing the idol herself, as well as fragmentary comments unrelated to the topic, were excluded. For an accurate picture of Yua Kudo’s actual personality and career, it’s best to check primary sources from her own official channels — the thread’s reactions should be read simply as one sample of how 5ch users perceive her.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Kohmi Hirose: “When it comes to Juice=Juice, I’m a fan of ‘Tako-chan’ (Yua Kudo)! Team Tako all the way!” ← Yua Kudo really is a massive hit with the uncles and aunties, lol.”
