  • Liverpool’s Wataru Endo left off Champions League league-phase squad list… benched twice in the Premier League this season but still hasn’t played

On September 3, UEFA published the squad list for the 2026-27 Champions League league phase, and it turned out that Liverpool’s Wataru Endo, a former Japan national team midfielder, had been left off it. Endo hasn’t had a single appearance in the Premier League this season either, having been named among the substitutes just twice. Reactions on 5channel were split — some questioned why Endo, who has already retired from the national team, didn’t transfer over the summer (“He should’ve just moved clubs”), others compared his playing style to that of Kaishu Sano, while still others offered calmer assessments that factored in his injury and fitness.

I get why he was clinging to Liverpool up until now — he needed to for World Cup selection — but now that he's declared his international retirement, I figured he'd surely transfer this summer.
Even a loan would be fine, he should just go somewhere he can actually play.

    Re: #33
He's not exactly at an age where he still needs to play to keep developing.
Once you give up on the national team too, I guess not playing becomes okay with you.

Japanese players can't even get on the pitch at big clubs.
Hiroki Ito is pretty far down the pecking order at Bayern too —
he hasn't played in cup games either, so he's probably like the 5th-choice center-back.
Meanwhile Kim Min-jae is an undisputed starter at Bayern,
and Lee Kang-in transferred to Atletico and is their ace.

Still, it's exasperating that Endo won't even go out on loan.
He really should've left when Klopp's tenure ended.
He should've left in the winter two seasons ago, when the managerial change clearly shifted how he was used.
No matter how good a player is, some managers just won't use them — that happens all the time, it's not Endo's fault.
Turns out Endo's the type who's satisfied just being at a big club, even without playing.

Destinations like Turkey haven't closed their windows yet.
It's a standoff — the club wants him out, Endo's refusing to go.
    26AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:39
Major injury, no idea when he'll be back, no idea how much of his fitness will return —
no club's signing a player like that.
If anyone wants Endo, the winter window will do just fine.

This is how an athlete who's lost his ambition ends up
    29AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:41

Still probably far from 100%, though

    40AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:57
All he thinks about is winning the ball back, so of course his teammates get irritated.
If he could carry it forward with a dribble or thread a through ball like Sano does, it'd create chances,
but instead he just passes to the nearest teammate and that's it.
    Every single time.
    45AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:00
    Re: #40
Sano's a meathead whose positioning is a mess,
and he can't control the back line either.
Endo's better and smarter at that stuff.
Carrying the ball and passing is a job for the No. 8 next to him anyway.
As a No. 6, Endo's better than Sano.
    50AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:04
    Re: #45
Sano's market value — and the actual offers he's gotten — are higher than Endo's, though
    56AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:07
    Re: #50
Sano ended up with zero offers, lol.
Sure, just being in the Bundesliga around age 25 inflates that made-up 'market value' number easily,
but that doesn't mean he'll actually sell for that price, and it has nothing to do with real ability.
Kamada was briefly the most expensive Japanese player around that same age too,
but in the end nobody bought him, he kept doing free transfers,
and now his market value has cratered.
    63AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:12
    Re: #56
It's fine, Sano's in the Bundesliga, isn't he.
    Mainz isn't weak either.
He can grind out one more year and then do a cheap free transfer.
    81AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:28
    Re: #56
Sano didn't get zero offers —
that's a fact, reported by Kicker, Bild, Sky, and the BBC.
Market value does correlate with ability.
Kamada actually holds the highest salary of any Japanese player ever, he's a title collector,
and he's the only one holding down a real regular starting spot in a Premier League full of high-value heavyweights.
The Kamada-Wharton midfield pairing is rock solid.
    67AnonymousSep 4, 2026 11:13
Liverpool's got JAL, Kodansha, and Beacle (Baycrew's) as sponsors, so they probably want to keep a Japanese player around — part of me thinks it should be a different player, but another part thinks if he's barely going to play anyway, Endo's fine for that role

    Seriously?…
Minamino was the team's top scorer in both the League Cup and the FA Cup, the key figure behind winning that domestic double.
    He contributed a ton.
He's way too hard on himself.

    Background and Talking Points

The Champions League league-phase squad list is a roster each club submits in advance; being left off it doesn’t prevent a player from featuring in domestic league matches or remaining at the club, and there’s also a system for swapping registered players during the winter transfer window. On the thread, some reactions were dismissive — “who cares” — given that Endo has already retired from the national team, while others pointedly questioned why he didn’t transfer over the summer, since although the major leagues’ transfer windows had closed by early September, some leagues, such as Turkey’s, were still open. Opinions on his playing style split between criticism that he lacks the ability to carry the ball forward and views that credit his contribution in a defensive role, and there was also disagreement over how his limited playing time due to injury would affect his standing in the transfer market.

Masumi Kuwata, who stepped down as manager of the Yomiuri Giants’ farm (ni-gun) team last October, revealed the circumstances behind his departure on a radio program aired August 30. According to Kuwata, the team had told him during the Miyazaki Phoenix League that they wanted him back next year, only to suddenly tell him to hang up his uniform, giving an explanation to the effect of “it’s hard to work with me around.” On 5ch, users pointed to friction with the farm team’s general manager at the time, while others speculated Kuwata could end up managing another team next season. Reactions especially focused on his name coming up as a candidate for the DeNA BayStars job, with the discussion spreading to his relationship with Kazuhiro Kiyohara and the Giants’ tendency to favor homegrown talent.

Masumi Kuwata, who abruptly stepped down as the Giants’ farm team manager last fall, has revealed the details behind his departure on a radio show. His candid remarks about internal team relationships and coaching philosophy have sparked surprise both inside and outside the baseball world. While some Giants fans are now calling for him to become next season’s manager, the possibility of him taking charge of another club is also gaining real traction.

Masumi Kuwata explains why he left the Giants

Appearing on the radio program “Ikushima Hiroshi’s Sunday at 9” on August 30, Kuwata explained his reasons for leaving the Giants last October. At the time, during the Miyazaki Phoenix League, the team had told him they wanted him back next year — only for him to be abruptly told one day to hang up his uniform. He also revealed he was given an explanation along the lines of “it’s hard for people to work with me around.”

Komada was let go for the exact same reason, at the exact same point during fall camp —
so the real answer is that Abe was the problem, not Kuwata.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kuwata was the ace pitcher of the famous “KK Combo” alongside Kazuhiro Kiyohara, and the two joined the Giants together after starring at PL Gakuen high school. After retiring, and following a stint in Major League Baseball, he took on a coaching role with the Giants’ farm team. The term “Oh Sadaharu path” refers to the precedent of Giants-bred figures going on to succeed as managers of other teams, and the same possibility is now being floated for Kuwata. Opinions in the thread were split between those praising his theory-driven, non-spirit-based coaching style, and those who felt his blunt, say-it-straight personality tends to create friction within an organization. Some posts also pointed to a former player who was let go at the same point in fall camp for the same reason, raising questions about the Giants’ farm-team system itself. It’s worth noting that the account of his departure comes solely from Kuwata’s own remarks, and the team has not issued any official explanation.

It was revealed on the 3rd that actress Nao Matsushita (41) will star in TV Asahi’s new drama series “Analog Nurse: What Even Is Digital?!” (Thursdays, 9 p.m.), premiering October 22, once again playing the freelance nurse she guest-starred as in the network’s 2021 series “Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon.”

The show is the culmination of TV Asahi’s medical drama trilogy, following “Doctor-X” and “The Travel Nurse,” both scripted by Miho Nakazono. Reacting to the offer to reprise the role of Akari Nasuda, which she played five years ago, Matsushita said, “I was surprised — at the time I thought it was just a one-episode appearance…” She added happily, “I’d been hoping to meet [that character] again, so I’m really glad it worked out this way.”

'Ten years is like a dream
A hundred years, a dream within a dream
A thousand years, a fleeting arrow of light'

Background and Key Points of Discussion

A “shared universe” is a storytelling format in which separate works’ settings and characters intersect — a term familiar from film franchises like Marvel’s MCU. This project spans three TV Asahi medical dramas — “Doctor-X,” “The Travel Nurse,” and “Analog Nurse” — with Nao Matsushita reprising, after five years, the role of nurse Akari Nasuda, whom she played as a guest in 2021’s “Doctor-X.” The thread’s discussion centered on two main points: a skeptical view that this is really just a crossover dressed up with an English buzzword, and hopes for a “Doctor-X” sequel tied to the availability of Ryoko Yonekura, who plays Michiko Daimon. It’s worth noting that “Doctor-X” already wrapped up with its theatrical film, and while some pointed to the death of Toshiyuki Nishida as a factor affecting any sequel, these are all speculation from the thread, not official announcements.

Some argued that the distributor’s ban on spoilers until September 12 backfired, letting only negative buzz spread on social media, while others suggested opening-week numbers were inflated by an audience giveaway (an illustrated “shikishi” board). Views on the film itself were also divided, with some criticizing the lack of plot progression and others praising the story’s developments.

    Re: #98
Lol, that's a brutally bad review.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The phrase “under 5% versus the previous week” doesn’t mean revenue dropped by 5% — it means revenue fell to under 5% of the previous week’s total, which works out to roughly a 96% decline. In the thread, comments 8 and 21 go back and forth with “surely that’s a typo for a 5% drop?” and “it’s a 96% drop,” showing how easy the figure was to misread at first glance. Behind this is the distributor’s policy of banning spoilers until September 12. As comments 51 and 59 point out, fans who enjoyed the film dutifully honored the spoiler ban and stayed quiet, while dissatisfied viewers ignored the restriction and spread harsh reviews freely — which may have skewed the film’s online reputation more negative than reality. Also, as comments 44 and 46 note, an audience giveaway (a shikishi board) was handed out during opening week, meaning turnout boosted by the freebie may have inflated the first week’s numbers. At the same time, some in the thread argued (comments 9 and 69) that “otaku-oriented late-night anime films were always going to be a niche, fan-driven scale to begin with,” suggesting it would be premature to blame the drop solely on the film’s quality.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “[Sad News] Madoka Magica Movie Craters to Under 5% of Last Week’s Box Office.”

  • New NISA users: most common income bracket is “under ¥3 million” at 39.3%

A survey of new NISA users’ annual income found the most common bracket was “under ¥3 million” at 39.3%, with an average income of ¥4.677 million — and those earning under ¥5 million make up 65.8% of all users. The article, picked up on 5channel’s News Express+ board, drew plenty of reactions. Some posters were surprised, asking “so higher earners invest less?”, while others pointed out the gap between percentages and raw numbers, noting “there are just fewer high earners to begin with.” Opinions split over how to read the statistics. The thread also debated whether it’s wise to dip into emergency savings to fund investments, alongside advice for beginners sitting on unrealized losses.

What’s the income of new NISA users? The most common bracket is “under ¥3 million”

Plenty of people cite their income level as the reason they haven’t started investing. So what income brackets are actually using the new NISA?

Asking other people about something as personal as your own life — where there's no single right answer — that attitude is the real problem here

Background and key points of this discussion

The article is based on a survey of new NISA users broken down by income bracket, which found “under ¥3 million” was the most common at 39.3%, average income was ¥4.677 million, and those earning under ¥5 million made up 65.8% of the total. The new NISA is a 2024 program that made the tax-free holding period permanent and expanded the annual investment limit; from the start, opinion has been split between seeing it as “a system for people with spare cash” and “a system anyone can use.” The thread divided over how to interpret these numbers — whether to read them as “low earners cutting into living expenses to invest,” or as “there are simply fewer high earners to begin with.” Several replies flagged the risk of confusing percentages with raw numbers. It’s also worth noting that the original article doesn’t specify the survey’s sample population or methodology, so that caveat is worth keeping in mind.

The eighth sub-MC will reportedly be revealed at a later date. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, discussion centered less on her departure itself and more on 81-year-old Tamori’s advancing age, the show’s sagging ratings, and the full lineup of past MCs and sub-MCs, with plenty of users speculating about who might replace her.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Music Station” has had Tamori as its sole host since the show began airing in 1986, and this year marks its 40th anniversary. In the thread, names like Hiroshi Sekiguchi and Mari Yoshimura came up in connection with the “original” host, but that’s actually confusion with a different show airing around the same era, “Yoru no Hit Studio” — worth clarifying that Tamori has, in fact, been Music Station’s only host. Sub-MC duties have typically gone to rookie announcers, and outside of exceptions like Yue Takeuchi and Ayaka Hironaka who each stayed five years, the role has generally turned over roughly every four years. Where the thread’s opinions diverged was over how seriously to take 81-year-old Tamori’s advancing age — some saw it as a genuine concern for the show’s future, others treated it as just a running joke. The names floated as possible next sub-MCs are all 5ch speculation, not anything officially announced by TV Asahi.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “TV Asahi’s Nia Suzuki Announces Departure as ‘Music Station’ Sub-MC! “With Tamori…” Looks Back on Four Years — 8th Sub-MC to Be Announced Later.”

  • Kohmi Hirose: “Overwhelmed to Sing Together” — Fans Welcome Her Juice=Juice Collab

On September 3, 2026, singer Kohmi Hirose appeared alongside Juice=Juice at “KohmiEXPO2026” and posted on her X account, “Thank you for the overwhelming performance,” and “I’m so moved to have gotten to sing together with you.” On the Hello! Project board of 5ch, many posts welcomed Hirose almost as if she were a member of Juice=Juice, while others found amusement in the differing coverage between the morning shows Mezamashi TV and Nonstop, and in how the group’s average age went up thanks to the collaboration — resulting in a mix of warm welcome and light teasing.

    Background and Talking Points

Kohmi Hirose is a singer known for hits like “Koi ni Ochite (Fall in Love),” and in recent years she’s appeared more frequently at Hello! Project-related events and music programs. This time, “KohmiEXPO2026” combined a live performance with TV appearances, and the fact that it was covered on nationwide morning shows like Mezamashi TV and Nonstop became a talking point on the thread. The member color “silver” assigned to her isn’t an official membership color but appears to be more of an affectionate nickname given for the collaboration, and most of the thread’s comments welcomed Hirose almost as if she were a genuine member of Juice=Juice. That said, there was also some skepticism toward taking a celebrity’s friendly collaboration comments entirely at face value, so it’s worth noting the mood wasn’t uniformly celebratory — a nuance that’s easy to miss.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Kohmi Hirose, who performed at KohmiEXPO2026 as Juice=Juice’s member-color ‘silver,’ gives Juice=Juice the highest praise.”

  • KONAMI Direct’s Two New Games See Sluggish Trailer Views, Sparking Debate on 5ch

KONAMI’s official channel posted its “KONAMI Direct,” which stalled at just 30,000 views, and the individually featured trailers for the two new titles, ‘Revenoir’ and ‘Rhapsody,’ each fell short of 10,000 views — a fact that became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. While some in the thread declared the low view counts a “flop,” others pushed back, arguing that video views don’t necessarily correlate with actual sales. The discussion also touched on complaints about underwhelming graphics, interest in the development staff’s backgrounds, and console-war-style bickering over the games’ lack of Switch support, turning it into a discussion that went well beyond a simple evaluation of the new titles.

Guess the real question is whether we'll even be able to see the numbers.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In recent years KONAMI has been rolling out a steady stream of new titles that build on IPs and know-how it’s cultivated in the past, and this reveal of ‘Revenoir’ and ‘Rhapsody’ is part of that same trend. As pointed out in the thread, judging eventual sales purely from view counts right after a video drops is inherently difficult — commenters cited Nintendo’s own official ‘ELDEN RING’ intro video topping 1 million views while the game itself sold only around 20,000 copies, suggesting that even high view counts don’t guarantee big sales, so drawing a direct line between views and sales calls for caution. There was also discussion of the development staff’s backgrounds (including a former Square Enix staffer and someone who has worked on titles like ‘Tokimeki Memorial 3’ within KONAMI), reflecting a degree of genuine anticipation and evaluation of the new games themselves. At the same time, posts stoking console-war-style hostility over the lack of Switch support were mixed in, making this thread a blend of genuine critique of the games and inter-console antagonism.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad news] KONAMI Direct hits 30,000 views… Revenoir and Rhapsody both fail to reach 10,000 views, flop confirmed…“

  • 1.6km Underground, Dark Matter Detector ‘LZ’ Spots a Mysterious Nuclear Recoil

A detector called LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), installed 1.6km underground in South Dakota, USA, has published a paper reporting a single observed event believed to be a nuclear recoil caused by a dark matter candidate particle. In the thread, some pointed out that the energy scale is close to that of the gamma-ray observations previously announced by Professor Toya and colleagues, suggesting both findings could bolster the leading “WIMP” hypothesis. Meanwhile, basic questions about what dark matter actually is, and how to interpret the claim that it makes up 85% of the universe’s mass, also sparked discussion — producing a wide range of replies from expert-level analysis to simple curiosity.

A dark matter detector installed 1.6km underground reportedly detected “one strange particle”

Dark matter is a hypothetical substance believed to make up about 25% of the universe’s matter-energy and about 85% of its mass.

The dark matter detector “LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ),” built to observe such dark matter, has reportedly detected one strange particle.

Like Professor Toya's gamma-ray observations from a year ago, it does seem fairly likely that dark matter's true identity is a WIMP.
Professor Toya's work assumed dark matter annihilation at roughly 500 times the mass of a proton,
while this LZ experiment points to nuclear recoil caused by dark matter over 200 times the proton's mass.
It's interesting that the energy scales are roughly in the same ballpark.

If dark matter's identity as a WIMP ever gets confirmed, that'd be a once-in-several-decades physics discovery.
In that case, maybe the Nobel Prize would go to Professor Toya and someone from the LZ team?

Dark matter is a hypothetical substance proposed by astronomer Fritz Zwicky in the 1930s. Zwicky noted that many galaxies were moving far too fast to be explained by their visible mass alone, and suggested dark matter's existence as an explanation. In the 1970s, astronomer Vera Rubin and others found that stars in the outer regions of galaxies were rotating faster than expected, indirectly demonstrating dark matter's existence.

Re: #4 Maybe it can move at speeds faster than light.

Maybe the outside of our universe is filled with dark matter.

Wouldn't that mean the expansion speed is confirmed to exceed the speed of light?

Since there would be atoms outside the universe that existed before the Big Bang happened, if we could investigate outside the universe, couldn't we prove that matter existed (before the Big Bang)?

    >> Dark matter is thought to have properties like 'having mass,' 'barely interacting with ordinary matter and not being directly observable optically,' and 'existing universally throughout the galaxy.' However, directly observing dark matter is extremely difficult, and it has never actually been detected.

    8AnonymousSep 4, 2026 01:03
    >> Scientists have proposed a hypothetical particle called a WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle) as the leading dark matter candidate. A WIMP is said to have about 100 times the mass of a proton, and to interact only through gravity and an extremely weak nuclear force.
    9AnonymousSep 4, 2026 01:08
Re: #8 saying it can only act through gravity seems off, doesn't it?

No matter how light something is, if the surrounding matter is heavier than its 'zero mass,' its motion should still be governed by the energy laws matching the surrounding physical energy.

If energy is being transmitted from all directions by the surrounding matter, then depending on how each atom's energy is transmitted and how much energy the atoms interacting with dark matter carry, you'd expect dark matter's collective behavior to show up looking strange in observations.
(*Dark matter's movement is said to be random and unpredictable)

If persistently 85% of the universe is dark matter, does that mean dark matter is what's carrying gravitational waves through the universe?

Every bit of matter on Earth becomes effectively massless once it leaves for space, but under certain conditions it can trigger a phenomenon that generates dark energy.

Since matter on Earth becomes effectively massless, you could also say its mass arises from interference with dark matter.

Wherever a stream exists, there's dark matter there.

If a stream is present, that marks a main channel of energy transfer in the universe.

After all, 85% of the universe's mass is dark matter!

If dark matter passes through a "25%-water-clump" spot, wouldn't that spot — now sphere-shaped — get swept up as if a dark matter "bullet" were passing through the mass inside it, causing that 25% object to move in a swirling pattern?
    38AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:14
Dark matter is strange, isn't it?

85% of the universe's mass is dark matter.

    Mass = heavy, right?
Heavy matter from Earth becomes lighter once it's out in space.

So dark matter that gets inside the Earth must be lighter than matter on Earth's surface, right?
Since the Earth is also rotating, wouldn't dark matter get flung back out into space before it can get inside the Earth?

And given that, wouldn't that be why winds blow up in the upper atmosphere and so on?

    > Properties like 'having mass' and 'existing universally throughout the galaxy'

It's strange that something with mass (≈ interacting gravitationally) doesn't clump together in one place.
Even if it doesn't fully clump, you'd expect it to concentrate toward the galactic center.
Is it that the nature of gravity between dark matter particles ≠ the nature of gravity between dark matter and ordinary matter?
    Or is it that
gravity between dark matter particles is balanced out by gravity (and other forces) between dark matter and ordinary matter?
    40AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:59
By the way, even ordinary matter — despite other interactions besides gravity getting in the way — should eventually all clump together into one spot and form a doomsday black hole.
The moment the universe stops expanding, it happens right away!
If the dark energy driving the expansion is infinite, or keeps growing, then that day never comes.

Background and key points of this topic

The LZ experiment places a liquid-xenon detector deep underground in South Dakota, USA, shielding it from cosmic-ray noise to catch faint signals — what’s being reported here isn’t a “discovery” but a single statistical candidate event. The WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle), the leading dark matter candidate, is thought to have roughly a hundred times the mass of a proton, and the thread noted how close that is to the annihilation mass scale suggested by Professor Toya’s gamma-ray observations. At the same time, some replies confused the “85% of the universe’s mass” figure with a spatial or area-based percentage. That figure is actually a statistical ratio within the universe’s overall energy-mass budget — it doesn’t mean 85% of local space is literally filled with dark matter, a distinction that’s easy to misread.

  • Harai-chi’s Iwai Asks Smokers: “Does a Cigarette Taste Better Inhaled or Exhaled?”

Iwai Yuki (40), one half of the comedy duo Harai-chi, posed a question to smokers on X (formerly Twitter) on the night of September 3: “For people who smoke, does it taste better when you inhale, or when you exhale?” The simple question sparked a lively split on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board between an “inhaling” camp and an “exhaling” camp, while many other posters pointed out that the sense of cigarettes “tasting good” is really just an illusion created by the relief of nicotine withdrawal — turning the thread into a debate ranging from taste theory to the mechanics of addiction.

Harai-chi’s Iwai asks smokers: “Does it taste better when you inhale, or when you exhale?”

Iwai Yuki (40), of the comedy duo Harai-chi, posted an update to his X account on the night of the 3rd, putting a question to smokers.

Iwai asked: “For people who smoke, does it taste better when you inhale, or when you exhale?”

Never smoked a day in my life, but I get the impression inhaling tastes better
    5AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:50
Inhaling tastes better, exhaling is when you relax. Haven't smoked in decades, but I've stopped consciously taking deep exhales, and that alone makes me want a cigarette
    6AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:51
Isn't it like that feeling when you take a big breath of air at a mountain summit and it tastes amazing? I don't smoke so I wouldn't know
    9AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:51
It's exhaling. When you blow smoke toward someone and they make that disgusted face — that's what does it for me
    13AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:52
It used to be great how smokers got side-eyed at pachinko parlors, but now there are way too many non-smoking halls. Whenever I landed a good machine I'd deliberately blow smoke at anyone who sat down next to me
    14AnonymousSep 4, 2026 09:53
Inhaling tastes better — the flavor's better too. I already quit, but smoking in the break room after wrapping up a chunk of work was the best part of the day

What I really want to know is how they feel about making everyone around them breathe their secondhand smoke. Though I bet they're all scumbags who don't care at all

The whole idea that cigarettes "taste good" is just an addict's illusion to begin with… The brain simply mistakes the moment nicotine levels climb back from a withdrawal deficit to zero for "deliciousness"

Smoke doesn't actually have a taste. You're just mistaking the relief of nicotine withdrawal for deliciousness

There's no way it's exhaling, idiot

Re: #37 Yeah, nobody says food tastes better coming back up either lol
    79AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:06
20 years of smoking, a pack a day on average — let me set you straight: there's not much of a "tastes good" feeling to it. It's more like struggling to breathe and finally sucking in oxygen. That's the answer, got it, baldy?
    95AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:09
Re: #79 Damn, spot on — you're not really thinking "this tastes good," you smoke to smother the brain's craving
    151AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:20
Re: #79 That just means you've smoked so much your brain's gone dumb from it. It's become pure habit — at that point it's less about taste and more like "guess I'll light one up"
    80AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:06
Do smokers seriously not realize how bad they smell?
    89AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:08
Re: #80 I'm aware I smell, but plenty of non-smokers stink too, so it's beside the point

    100AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:11
Cigarettes are supposedly for relaxation or blowing off steam, but once you start and get hooked, not being able to smoke ends up making you even more irritated — completely defeating the purpose
    153AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:21
Re: #100 Apparently this isn't unique to nicotine — it's called the opponent-process theory of drug dependence. The brain learns that smoking brings calm, which flips into a state where you can't feel calm without it
    138AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:18
Obviously it's when you inhale. Think about it for two seconds
    155AnonymousSep 4, 2026 10:21
Re: #138 Plenty of people are exhale people though, right? Think about it for two seconds

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Iwai’s simple question struck a nerve as it touches on a basic sensation that splits opinion even among smokers themselves. The thread divided between those who feel the “deliciousness” on the inhale and those who feel relief on the exhale, while several posts argued that the “deliciousness” of smoking is, to begin with, just the brain mistaking the satisfaction of resolved nicotine withdrawal for pleasure. That explanation echoes what addiction research calls the opponent-process theory — suggesting the sensation may be less about pleasure itself and more about withdrawal relief being reinterpreted as pleasure. On the other hand, some pushed back that “the taste differs by brand,” keeping alive the view that a genuine flavor element can’t be entirely ruled out. The fact that people’s explanations of the sensation diverge depending on whether they’ve actually smoked is a classic example of why this kind of topic tends to spark debate.
