  • Man Scolded for Dipping Tempura Shrimp in Sauce — 5ch Says ‘Just Eat It However You Want’

A 29-year-old office worker’s story about being scolded by a fellow regular customer — “That’s rude to the restaurant” — after dipping her tempura shrimp in tentsuyu sauce at the counter of an upscale tempura restaurant was published in FORZA STYLE’s serial column “Women’s Case Files,” and picked up by a thread on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The article wraps up with the shop owner ultimately saying, “It’s fine for customers to eat however they like.” On the thread, alongside the classic debate over whether tempura should be eaten with salt or tentsuyu, much of the pushback targeted the article itself — the “sounds made-up” quality typical of these first-person essays, and skepticism that a course under 10,000 yen counts as “upscale.”

“Eating shrimp tempura with tentsuyu sauce is rude to the restaurant” — At an upscale tempura restaurant’s counter, a regular customer turns into a “manners police.” What did the 29-year-old office worker do first? [Expert Advice] | FORZA STYLE

Saying salt tastes better is just people showing off.
Not just tempura — for yakiniku, yakitori, etc., sauce-based condiments (tentsuyu for tempura) are overwhelmingly tastier.
Lately some people eat tonkatsu with salt, but tonkatsu should be tonkatsu sauce with mayo, or grated daikon with ponzu.
And vinegar-pepper dip for gyoza makes no sense to me.

    Background and Talking Points

There’s no single “correct” way to eat tempura — whether you use salt (or matcha salt) or tentsuyu really comes down to the restaurant’s style, regional custom, and personal preference, and even this article ultimately resolves with the shop owner saying “it’s fine for customers to eat however they like.” Despite that, the story caught on because first-person, drama-style web articles — like FORZA STYLE’s “Women’s Case Files” — have long been viewed with suspicion on 5ch as “too polished to be a real personal account,” i.e., made up. Much of the thread’s energy went not toward the manners debate itself but toward criticizing the article’s construction — the oddity of calling a course under 10,000 yen “upscale,” or how hard it was to find the link to the continuation. Readers are probably better served taking in the thread’s skepticism toward the article’s framing, rather than taking the “manners police” headline at face value.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread ““Rude to the restaurant to eat shrimp with tentsuyu” — At an upscale tempura restaurant’s counter, a regular customer turns into a manners police. What did the 29-year-old office worker do first.”

  • Dollar Briefly Drops to 152 Yen Range — 5ch Debates What Exchange Rate Would Be Ideal

On the morning of September 8, 2026, Reuters flashed a report that the dollar-yen exchange rate had briefly fallen to the 152 yen range on the foreign exchange market. The sudden swing came amid a yen-weakening trend from levels of around 110 yen to the dollar just a few years earlier, and on 5ch’s Newsflash+ (Nyusu Sokuho+) thread, posters expressed surprise, asking “Did all this movement really happen from mere verbal intervention (jawboning), without any actual buying/selling?” A poll-style post asking “Where should the ideal exchange rate be?” drew a wide range of answers, from the 90s to the 170s yen range, and lively discussion also broke out over how a stronger yen would affect prices, home appliances, and NISA (Japan’s tax-free investment account) assets.

    Got it
We'll push it back to 160 starting at 15:30, so get out then

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The dollar-yen exchange rate often swings sharply in a short span due to a mix of factors — jawboning remarks aimed at the markets from the U.S. Treasury Secretary, speculation about government intervention, and more. This drop to the 152 yen range may likewise have come not from large-scale actual intervention but from verbal remarks alone, as several posters in the thread pointed out. Opinions in the thread were split on “what level would be ideal,” ranging from hopes for a return to the 110s to a preference for keeping things as they are. One easily misunderstood point: even as the yen strengthens, it typically takes several months to a year for that to be reflected in import prices, so prices that have already risen won’t necessarily drop right away just because of currency gains. It’s also worth noting, as a practical matter, that products like the iPhone — which go through many manufacturing steps within Japan — won’t necessarily get cheaper from yen strength alone.

  • ‘A Tangled Love Triangle?’ Gifu Cake Shop Fire — 5ch: ‘That Owner Must’ve Been Quite the Businesswoman’

In a fire at a cake shop in Motosu, Gifu Prefecture, three people — including the shop’s 66-year-old female owner — died. A 70-year-old male executive at a funeral company in Mizuho City, who was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, is believed to have been in a dispute over a romantic relationship with someone who was at the shop. Reports say he may have left the shop once before returning, at which point the fire broke out. On 5ch, reactions came from many angles: the profile of a shop owner who had built her cake business up from nothing, surprise that people in their 70s could still feel such intense emotions, and speculation about the family relationships involved.

In the fire at “Sunrise,” a cake shop in Motosu, Gifu Prefecture, that left three people dead, it has emerged from sources close to the investigation that the 70-year-old male funeral company executive from Mizuho City in the same prefecture — who was confirmed dead after being taken to hospital — had been in a dispute over a romantic relationship with someone who was at the shop at the time of the incident. The fire appears to have broken out after the company executive left the shop once and then returned; prefectural police are investigating the possibility that he was involved in the incident.

According to people familiar with the matter, after closing time the shop owner (66) and a total of ten people, including her junior high school classmates, had gathered mainly in the second-floor living quarters to play mahjong and socialize… (continued in the paid edition)

Sounds like the old funeral home guy fell for the cake shop's lady owner all on his own.
When her husband died, he handled the funeral through his company,
and apparently ever since then his funeral home has been handing cake shop discount coupons to its customers.
He probably thought he was helping out the widow,
but she was off having fun with a mixed group of old male and female classmates, and his feelings were probably just an annoyance to her.

One easily overlooked detail here is that the male funeral company executive suspected of being connected to the fire was himself confirmed dead after being taken to hospital. Since the very person who would be the focus of the investigation has already died, the full picture of his motive has to be pieced together from physical evidence and witness accounts — it will never be told in his own words. On the thread, the main points of interest were the profile of a shop owner respected enough to run her own business and host old classmates at her home, along with surprise that someone could still feel such intense romantic passion late in life. At the same time, unconfirmed details — like whether they were really dating or the state of his finances — are mixed in among the accounts of people who knew him, so readers should keep the confirmed reporting separate from the speculation on 5ch.

  • Leaker Nate: “Ocarina of Time Is Getting a Full Remake”

Nintendo is gearing up for a livestream tied to the 40th anniversary of “The Legend of Zelda,” and with less than 24 hours to go before it airs, prominent leaker Nate posted his predictions. According to him, the Ocarina of Time remake won’t just be a graphical overhaul or HD touch-up — it will be a far more ambitious project, adding a modernized combat system and free jumping action. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, the prediction sparked a mix of reactions: some agreed that “a graphics-only remake would be pointless,” others pointed out the technical difficulty of achieving seamless dungeon layouts and map design, and still others voiced skepticism about the leaker’s prediction itself.

With less than 24 hours left before the “Zelda”-related stream (Zelda Direct), Nate shared his own predictions.

    • The Ocarina of Time remake won’t be a simple one-to-one recreation — it’ll be something more ambitious

    • A modernized combat system and free jumping action will be added

Yeah, that makes sense — if it's just a graphical remake, there's no point releasing it on Switch 2.

"1.1 remake," "full remake" — these brain-dead labels don't mean anything.

If they add a bunch of new weapons besides the Biggoron Sword, which category does that fall into?
If the map between the castle town and the castle gets a completely different layout, which category is that?

Why do people with no brains insist on using terms that make reality harder to grasp?
    41AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:22
Even if it's a remake, it won't turn into a Breath of the Wild-style game —
it's a linear sandbox, after all.
    49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:47
    Re: #41
Well, the story isn't that tightly plotted to begin with, so making the dungeon order free wouldn't be impossible
(though you'd still need the child/adult split).

But if they give you all the key items up front to enable free dungeon order, yet can't provide
a huge Breath of the Wild-style map, it'd end up feeling like a shrunken-down BotW — kind of underwhelming.
    50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 08:53
Well, they're doing a dedicated Direct for it, so it's surely a real remake.
If it turns out to be just remaster-level, I'll be tearing it to shreds.

    Re: #50
Setting aside whether it's a full remake or not —
this isn't a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct.
It's the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, and
Nintendo has officially said it'll cover things beyond just games too.

They'll probably spend a good chunk of time on the movie,
and if there's a concert or merch like there was for the 30th anniversary, they'll promote that too.
If there's ever a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct, I'd expect that to happen separately.
    57AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:10
    Re: #50
Also, they haven't shown any actual gameplay footage yet,
so it seems unlikely they'd jump straight to a dedicated-Direct level of detail, no?
My guess is we'll get a proper trailer plus some brief supplementary explanation this time.
    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:07
Dungeons are the core of the fun, but the exact internal layout isn't essential to Ocarina of Time itself (see: the existence of the "Master Quest" remixed version),
so I'd bet they change at least that much.

I'm in the camp of: keep the "front" (standard) quest faithful to the original,

    Re: #54
Changing the dungeon layouts wouldn't hurt the story at all,
but designing brand-new dungeons with well-tuned difficulty from scratch is a seriously hard task,
and development difficulty would skyrocket — so who knows how it'll turn out.
    58AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:11
Making the map seamless while still preserving the original's shortcut points (like the Lost Woods ⇔ Goron City connection) sounds incredibly difficult.

Too many slow people out there assuming it's all about the game.
Going by the usual pattern, it'll mostly be movie stuff plus some weird anniversary merch,
with the game side limited to Ocarina of Time, maybe a Virtual Console-style title,
and if we're lucky, a teasing bit of new-game footage at the very end.
That's about the size of it.

A lot of people also forget how modest the Mario 40th Anniversary Direct actually was:

    • Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (remastered port with added content)
    • Mario Tennis
    • Wonder (two-edition release)

Well, if Monolith Soft is developing it, it'd have to be a large-scale remake.

Monolith's been running job postings for "Zelda development staff" for about 7 years now,
so if that's the case, the development period would be substantial too.

Miyazaki of Keio University was a shrewd one.

Getting to work on Ocarina of Time at the peak of his career must be the height of happiness.

Off to reconsider Ocarina of Time alongside Aonuma of Tokyo University of the Arts.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Ocarina of Time was already ported to 3DS back in 2011, but that version was a “faithful port” that kept the dungeon layouts and story essentially unchanged. The HD versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess likewise focused mainly on graphical upgrades, with only limited changes to the actual content. Nate’s prediction discussed here breaks from those precedents, suggesting a “full remake” that reworks combat and action as well — though it remains unconfirmed information ahead of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct. Reactions in the thread were split: some expressed hope, arguing “a graphics-only remake would be pointless”; others raised concerns about the technical difficulty of seamless map design and dungeon redesign; and still others were skeptical of the leaker’s accuracy itself. It’s worth noting that, including whether Monolith Soft is the developer, Nintendo has made no official announcement at this point — everything remains speculation.

  • Yu-Gi-Oh Introduces “Banishing the Banished” and 5ch Isn’t Having It: “Just Stop”

A new Yu-Gi-Oh! card that references cards banished face-down has become a hot topic on a 5ch live-commentary thread. “Banish” has long been known—going back to early cards like Gravedigger Ghoul and Soul Release—as an effect where “once a card is used, it never comes back.” This time, though, players confirmed cards being referenced and reused straight out of that banish zone, and posters coined a new term for it: “banishing the banished.” The thread split over whether this is genuinely a new concept or just an old mechanic from cards like Apostle of Annihilation resurfacing, with comparisons to the Lost Zone from the Pokémon Trading Card Game and general fatigue with the game’s ever-growing rule complexity also spreading through the replies.

Without a rotation, power creep only ever goes one direction.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, “banishing” was originally introduced through early cards like Gravedigger Ghoul and Soul Release as an effect where a card “never returns to the game.” For years, the shared understanding was that “a banished card might as well not exist.” However, cards that banish face-down — like Apostle of Annihilation — have actually been around for a while, and as replies 67 and 71 point out, new cards that reference what’s sitting in that face-down banish zone aren’t a totally new innovation so much as an old mechanic finally clicking into place. Where the thread split was over whether this counts as a natural extension of the existing rules or a sign the game’s design has hit its limits — negative takes leaned on inflation fatigue, while defenders made the practical point that “it’s not a problem since you can just negate it.” The comparison to the Lost Zone from the Pokémon Trading Card Game (replies 39 and 42) is a useful reference point for readers unfamiliar with the mechanic, though it’s worth noting the two games differ enough in the details that the comparison isn’t a perfect one-to-one.

  • July’s Current Account Surplus Hits ¥2.9889 Trillion — 5ch: ‘Investment Profits Don’t Trickle Down to the Poor’

According to preliminary balance-of-payments figures released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance, July’s current account surplus came in at ¥2.9889 trillion, up 15.6% year-on-year. The current account combines the trade/services balance with primary income (dividends and interest from overseas investments), and commenters on the thread repeatedly pointed out that “the trade balance is actually in deficit — this surplus is just investment profit.” Opinions then split over questions like “how does that profit get funneled back into domestic wages?” and “isn’t it just exporters and shareholders who benefit?”, with the discussion spreading into debates over the weak yen and the government’s economic policy.

According to preliminary balance-of-payments data released by the Ministry of Finance on the 8th, the current account surplus — reflecting trade in goods, services, and investment with other countries — rose 15.6% year-on-year to ¥2.9889 trillion in July.

    Re: #196
Can't say it's absolute, but that's actually backwards.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The current account is the sum of the “trade/services balance” and “primary income” — things like dividends from overseas subsidiaries and interest on securities — and in recent years it’s primary income that has been the main driver of Japan’s surplus. The thread’s discussion started from the premise that “the trade balance is in deficit,” but that premise was actually outdated: Japan’s trade balance for fiscal 2025 had already turned positive. A common point of confusion is that a large current account surplus doesn’t automatically translate into higher domestic wages or prices, since some profit from overseas investment gets reinvested locally abroad rather than flowing back into Japan. The thread split over whether to view this surplus as “a win only for investors and exporters” or as “a benefit from the weak yen and high stock prices that anyone can tap into by investing or exporting themselves.”

  • France’s Unauthorized Dragon Ball Park Sparks Debate — 5ch: ‘It’s a Problem Because They Didn’t Even Change Anything’

A thread on 5ch’s Livegalileo (“Anything Goes Live”) board claimed that a facility in France may have been built without permission, using Dragon Ball as its motif. The thread’s original poster argued, “Don’t use elements derived from China, like the Ruyi Jingu Bang (magic staff) and Flying Nimbus cloud, without permission as if they’re Japanese culture.” Other posters pushed back one after another, saying things like “Of course Son Goku’s roots trace back to China’s Journey to the West” and “The real issue is copyright, not some claim that the origin is being falsified.” The discussion went in circles over copyright and design similarity, and no resolution was ever reached.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The character Son Goku was created by Akira Toriyama for Dragon Ball, based on the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong, who appears in the 16th-century Chinese classic Journey to the West. Motifs like the Ruyi Jingu Bang and the Flying Nimbus also trace back to Journey to the West, but the specific design and story of Dragon Ball’s Son Goku are an original creation copyrighted by Akira Toriyama, Bird Studio, and Toei Animation. Throughout the thread, a cultural argument (“they’re falsifying the origin”) and a legal argument (“if the design is being used without permission, it’s a copyright issue”) talked past each other, running in parallel without ever meeting. Notably, no primary source or news report confirming that the French facility was actually built without authorization was ever presented in the thread — much of the speculation grew out of indirect facts, like Son Goku being used as an official Olympics ambassador and merchandise tie-ins at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

  • ‘FH6’ PS5 Version Gets Year-End Release Mention in Official Update Blog — 5ch: ‘Total Unconditional Surrender to PlayStation, LOL’

Regarding “Forza Horizon 6,” which has so far been rolled out for Xbox and PC, the developer’s official update blog (Series 5) explicitly stated that “the PS5 version is planned for release later this year.” Up to now, the release timing for the PS5 version had never been clearly stated officially, and some had even whispered rumors of a cancellation — but this new wording effectively reconfirms that a release within the year is still the plan. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the announcement sparked debate over whether the cancellation rumors were ever true, whether the PS5 version will support Quick Resume, and the merits of Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy overall.

Forza, the face of Xbox, surrenders unconditionally to PlayStation, lol lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Forza Horizon series has traditionally been an Xbox-and-PC affair, and the fate of a PS5 version had remained officially ambiguous. What sparked this discussion was a single line added to the developer’s official season-by-season update blog stating that “a PS5 version is planned for release later this year.” The timing is only specified as “later this year,” with no concrete release date given. While many in the thread took this as confirmation that the cancellation rumors were false, opinions were also divided on more practical points — such as how the porting costs would realistically be recouped, and whether skipping Quick Resume support was justified given past save-data-loss trouble in the game. Note that discussions like this tend to center on exchanges between supporters of particular platforms, and posts aimed at mocking individuals’ abilities or personal attributes have been excluded from this article.

Lately stocks tend to move in tandem with the exchange rate — traders seem to stack currency gains on top of their stock trades.
So when the yen strengthens, stocks generally tend to fall. Conversely, a weak yen tends to push stocks up.
During the ultra-strong-yen era under the DPJ government, the rate hit ¥69 and the Nikkei crashed to around 7,000. Now it went as high as ¥160 and the Nikkei's at 65,000.
    131AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:43
    Re: #21
I can answer for investment trusts (index funds): just remember that a weaker yen boosts your valuation and a stronger yen lowers it, and that gets multiplied together with the growth of whatever you're invested in to give your final valuation.
For example, say the rate is ¥152, down 1% (yen strengthening) from the day before, while your holdings grew 1.5% — that day's valuation would be up 0.5%, an unrealized gain.
This gets recalculated every single day.
    Something like that, anyway.

Actually, do you really think all those crappy companies that kept jacking up prices "because of the weak yen" will ever lower them again if we get back to ¥100 to the dollar?
Their whole "blame the import costs" excuse won't fly anymore.

    The deflation era

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The yen had weakened to as low as ¥160 to the dollar earlier this year, but strong domestic data — seven straight months of real wage gains and 1.4% GDP growth — fueled rate-hike expectations and pulled the yen back up to the ¥153 level. In the thread, replies explaining the basic mechanic that “a weak yen means paper gains, a strong yen means paper losses” stood out amid discussion of the impact on people making regular new-NISA investment contributions, testing posters’ grasp of how closely stock prices and exchange rates now move together. At the same time, claims about the “appropriate” rate — such as “¥120 is right for ordinary people’s lives” or “the ¥120s reflect Japan’s real strength” — rested on inconsistent reasoning from poster to poster, mixing different yardsticks like purchasing power parity and capital flows without acknowledging the difference; readers should note there’s no single, objective “correct” exchange rate.

  • Declining Birthrate: Kyoto University Finds College-Educated Women ‘Only 5% of the Cause’ — 5ch Reacts: ‘You Call That a Margin of Error?’

An analysis by Kyoto University, reported by the Asahi Shimbun on September 7, 2026, found that the rise in the number of university-educated women has had only a ‘mere 5%’ effect on Japan’s declining birthrate. Since the original article is behind a paywall and only partially readable, opinions split on 5ch over whether that 5% should be read as a rounding error or as a number too significant to ignore. Some pushed back by citing comparative data on university enrollment rates and birthrates across Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan, while many others pointed to economic factors unrelated to education — rising social insurance burdens, student loan repayments, and the low wages of the ’employment ice age’ generation — as the real drivers.

Social insurance premiums alone (pension, healthcare, nursing care) siphon off a full 30% of wages. This kind of exploitation between generations is what's robbed workers and young people of the ability to marry, raise kids, and pay for education — that's why the birthrate collapsed.

    Re: #7
That, plus student loans and inflation

Back in the day, they used to say if a woman went to university it hurt her marriage prospects — go to Todai and you'd never get married, that kind of thing.
So plenty of women who had the grades to get into a former imperial university went to women's colleges or junior colleges instead.

    Yeah, basically.
It's less about education level and more about whether women work full-time and go hard at their careers.

I think it basically comes down to: the downsides of staying single and childless have shrunk a ton, while the downsides of marrying the wrong person have become impossible to ignore.

There's a beautifully clean correlation between higher education rates and falling birthrates.

    Taiwan's university enrollment rate: 85%
    ↓
    Taiwan's total fertility rate: 0.695

South Korea's university enrollment rate: 73.6%
    ↓
South Korea's total fertility rate: 0.80

    China's university enrollment rate: 70%
    ↓
    China's total fertility rate: 0.93

    Japan's university enrollment rate: 60%
    ↓
    Japan's total fertility rate: 1.14

I don't want to bring a kid into a world this miserable, and honestly, the right move is to walk away from women entirely.
Caring about women is what makes me unhappy in the first place — for guys like me, the key is killing off any interest in them, since they're the root of the misery.

If we're supposed to believe this estimate…
the completed fertility rate for college-educated women is much lower than for women with a high school education or less.
And the share of college-educated women has grown a lot compared to the past.
So the effect isn't 'just 5%' — if anything, this data strongly supports the theory that more college-educated women IS what caused the falling birthrate.
So why are they lying about it?

Yeah, exactly, so honestly this is fine as it is.
People who get married tend to be surrounded by friends who are also married.
Calling that 'division' is a stretch… if anything, instead of the media only covering failed matchmaking stories, they should go interview the 90% of first-time married couples who got married without even trying formal matchmaking, and run that instead.
But they won't, because writing about ordinary, natural encounters doesn't make money lol.
I guess the real problem is treating 'whatever makes money' as automatically good.

People always say 'wanting to leave offspring is a biological instinct,' but if it really were an instinct, we wouldn't be in this situation.
If it were truly instinctual, people would be a lot more desperate about it.
If people aren't desperate enough to actually do it, then it was never that strong a drive to begin with.
Calling something that weak an 'instinct' is way overselling it.

    Re: #231
    Spot on.
Sex drive is instinctual, but marriage and child-rearing actually go against instinct.
Women might have an instinct to raise kids once they've given birth,
but for men, getting married goes against instinct.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This discussion was sparked by an Asahi Shimbun article (September 7, 2026) reporting on a Kyoto University analysis; since the original article is paywalled, 5ch users could only see the headline and a rough summary, which is largely why interpretation of the ‘5%’ figure became the central debate — a product of asymmetric information. Statistically, there’s a divide between those who see a figure around 5% as within the margin of error and those who argue that even a small annual effect becomes significant once it compounds — and both readings have some validity; the difference is largely one of interpretation. The thread also cited correlational data comparing university enrollment rates and birthrates across Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan as counter-evidence, but correlation isn’t causation, and this doesn’t necessarily contradict Kyoto University’s conclusion that the effect is small. It’s also worth noting that economic factors like the social insurance burden, student loans, and the treatment of the ’employment ice age’ generation tend to be discussed independently of educational attainment, underscoring that the declining birthrate is hard to pin on any single cause.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread ‘Is the declining birthrate caused by more women going to university? Kyoto University analysis: “only a 5% effect”‘.
