Yu-Gi-Oh Introduces “Banishing the Banished” and 5ch Isn’t Having It: “Just Stop”

The story

A new Yu-Gi-Oh! card that references cards banished face-down has become a hot topic on a 5ch live-commentary thread. “Banish” has long been known—going back to early cards like Gravedigger Ghoul and Soul Release—as an effect where “once a card is used, it never comes back.” This time, though, players confirmed cards being referenced and reused straight out of that banish zone, and posters coined a new term for it: “banishing the banished.” The thread split over whether this is genuinely a new concept or just an old mechanic from cards like Apostle of Annihilation resurfacing, with comparisons to the Lost Zone from the Pokémon Trading Card Game and general fatigue with the game’s ever-growing rule complexity also spreading through the replies.

What are we even supposed to do with this.
2AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:38
Then I'll just negate their "banish the banished" and push my play through anyway.
3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:38
They could just print a "banish the banished" version of Return from the Different Dimension or Dimension Fusion, couldn't they.
4AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:39
I heard they're even giving Cyclone a negate effect now.
6AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:40
Quit popping off with a bunch of effects in the banish zone after you've already been banished, moron.
7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:40
Wasn't "banish" originally worded like "this card can never be used again"?
First one was Soul Release, right?
86AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:37
Re: #7
Pretty sure it was Gravedigger Ghoul.
8AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:41
I don't even play Yu-Gi-Oh anymore, but whenever I watch duels on video, I genuinely think it's a trash game.
13AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:43
Re: #8
Yeah, this really does look like a game for people who can't hold a conversation.
15AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:44
Wait, what
I thought face-down banish meant total, permanent exile — did they cook up yet another new concept?
22AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:48
Re: #15
A deck came out that just spams reusing face-down banished cards.
16AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:45
I'm a STEM elite
Somebody's gonna have to draw me a De Morgan's Venn diagram before this makes any sense.
41AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:59
Re: #16
Summoning De Moivre.
23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:49
Re: #22
Wait, seriously?
So now there's yet another new zone to keep cards in?
25AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:50
Re: #23
There isn't even a physical zone for banished cards to begin with.
28AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:53
Just negate everything and there's no problem.
40AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:58
Re: #28
Reminder that modern cards mostly go for advantage-generating disruption instead of straight negation these days, so stacking up negate effects isn't really that common anymore.
29AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:53
An effect that literally rips the card up already exists
You tear up the token so it can't have effects applied to it, get banished, or be destroyed.
94AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:47
Re: #29
Wait, that already exists…?
Card games really are anything-goes at this point.
39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 09:58
In Pokémon TCG terms, is it like getting cards back from the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile?
42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:00
Re: #39
That "Lost Zone" actually comes in a face-up and a face-down version, and you can only recover cards from the more obscure face-down one.
43AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:04
Me: "Oh, a card that triggers when it's discarded from hand to the graveyard… great, I'll combo it with this other card that discards a card from my hand to activate!"

The rulebook: "Nope. In that case the card wasn't 'discarded' from hand to graveyard — it was sent there as a cost, so the effect can't trigger."

Just stop this already.
68AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:27
Re: #43
"Discarding" and "sending" are technically two different things.
48AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:07
I don't even feel like playing this on paper anymore.
49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:11
Re: #48
Feel that hard.
50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:11
Whoever first designed a card that messes with banishing is the real culprit here.

And that was pretty early on, too.
52AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:13
Re: #50
It's Gravedigger Ghoul's fault. Gravedigger Ghoul's.
51AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:11
Seriously, hurry up and make a new Tag Force game already, pretty please
That's the only Yu-Gi-Oh thing I still feel like playing.
60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:16
Re: #51
I ground the PS version of Tag Force into the dirt back in the day.
64AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:17
Re: #51
Was gonna say "just make do with Tag Force Special," then remembered that came out over a decade ago lol.
59AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:15
Oh, so "banishing the banished" just means the face-down banish thing?
67AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:26
Re: #59
I thought you couldn't even reference the name or type of a face-down banished card, but the newest archetype has an effect that pulls its own archetype's cards straight out of face-down banishment.
71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:29
Re: #67
Oh, so that's what's going on, had no idea
So you're saying "banishing the banished" already existed with cards like Apostle of Annihilation?
84AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:37
Re: #67
There was a time I too believed "face-down" meant it could never be referenced again…
Is that seriously true?
62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:17
That "reinterpreted Yata-Garasu lock" is way too broken (Yata-Garasu is one of the most infamous banned cards in Yu-Gi-Oh history).
73AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:29
Re: #62
Did good old Yata-Garasu screw things up again?
74AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:30
Isn't Yata-Garasu already banned for life?
That card's busted no matter what era you're in.
80AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:32
Re: #74
Never understood why they'd ever let that thing off the banlist
There's no way it doesn't get abused.
81AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:34
Same goes for Duel Masters, but card games stop being fun once you twist the rules over and over past a certain point
That's when the normal players drift away and only the hardcore fans stick around.
87AnonymousSep 8, 2026 10:41
Re: #81
Without a rotation, power creep only ever goes one direction.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, “banishing” was originally introduced through early cards like Gravedigger Ghoul and Soul Release as an effect where a card “never returns to the game.” For years, the shared understanding was that “a banished card might as well not exist.” However, cards that banish face-down — like Apostle of Annihilation — have actually been around for a while, and as replies 67 and 71 point out, new cards that reference what’s sitting in that face-down banish zone aren’t a totally new innovation so much as an old mechanic finally clicking into place. Where the thread split was over whether this counts as a natural extension of the existing rules or a sign the game’s design has hit its limits — negative takes leaned on inflation fatigue, while defenders made the practical point that “it’s not a problem since you can just negate it.” The comparison to the Lost Zone from the Pokémon Trading Card Game (replies 39 and 42) is a useful reference point for readers unfamiliar with the mechanic, though it’s worth noting the two games differ enough in the details that the comparison isn’t a perfect one-to-one.
