The story
Nintendo is gearing up for a livestream tied to the 40th anniversary of “The Legend of Zelda,” and with less than 24 hours to go before it airs, prominent leaker Nate posted his predictions. According to him, the Ocarina of Time remake won’t just be a graphical overhaul or HD touch-up — it will be a far more ambitious project, adding a modernized combat system and free jumping action. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, the prediction sparked a mix of reactions: some agreed that “a graphics-only remake would be pointless,” others pointed out the technical difficulty of achieving seamless dungeon layouts and map design, and still others voiced skepticism about the leaker’s prediction itself.
With less than 24 hours left before the “Zelda”-related stream (Zelda Direct), Nate shared his own predictions.
• The Ocarina of Time remake won’t be a simple one-to-one recreation — it’ll be something more ambitious
• A modernized combat system and free jumping action will be added

The Star Fox remake was pointless, though.

Say goodbye to reality.
Enjoy the fall.

Its worldwide gross has now reached $2,332,821,029 (about ¥373.3 billion), putting it at #4 all-time. Overtaking #3 "Avatar: The Way of Water" ($2,334,484,620 / about ¥373.5 billion) is just a matter of time.
Nate's actually got a decent track record, though.
Well, yeah, obviously.
But Link's Awakening was pretty much a straight remake, no?
If they add a bunch of new weapons besides the Biggoron Sword, which category does that fall into?
If the map between the castle town and the castle gets a completely different layout, which category is that?
Why do people with no brains insist on using terms that make reality harder to grasp?
it's a linear sandbox, after all.
Well, the story isn't that tightly plotted to begin with, so making the dungeon order free wouldn't be impossible
(though you'd still need the child/adult split).
But if they give you all the key items up front to enable free dungeon order, yet can't provide
a huge Breath of the Wild-style map, it'd end up feeling like a shrunken-down BotW — kind of underwhelming.
If it turns out to be just remaster-level, I'll be tearing it to shreds.
Setting aside whether it's a full remake or not —
this isn't a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct.
It's the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, and
Nintendo has officially said it'll cover things beyond just games too.
They'll probably spend a good chunk of time on the movie,
and if there's a concert or merch like there was for the 30th anniversary, they'll promote that too.
If there's ever a dedicated Ocarina of Time Direct, I'd expect that to happen separately.
Also, they haven't shown any actual gameplay footage yet,
so it seems unlikely they'd jump straight to a dedicated-Direct level of detail, no?
My guess is we'll get a proper trailer plus some brief supplementary explanation this time.
so I'd bet they change at least that much.
I'm in the camp of: keep the "front" (standard) quest faithful to the original,
make the "back" (Master Quest) version all-new.
Changing the dungeon layouts wouldn't hurt the story at all,
but designing brand-new dungeons with well-tuned difficulty from scratch is a seriously hard task,
and development difficulty would skyrocket — so who knows how it'll turn out.
Couldn't they just handle that with a waterfall-pool-style warp?
There's plenty of ways to deal with it, like minecart warps.
Too many slow people out there assuming it's all about the game.
Going by the usual pattern, it'll mostly be movie stuff plus some weird anniversary merch,
with the game side limited to Ocarina of Time, maybe a Virtual Console-style title,
and if we're lucky, a teasing bit of new-game footage at the very end.
That's about the size of it.
They could throw in a reveal of the Zelda area at Universal Florida or something.
Or announce a Zelda area for the USJ expansion — that'd work too.
A lot of people also forget how modest the Mario 40th Anniversary Direct actually was:
• Movie-related stuff
• Nintendo Museum-related stuff
• Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (remastered port with added content)
• Mario Tennis
• Wonder (two-edition release)
• Yoshi
That was it.
Just knowing this time we're getting an actual Ocarina of Time remake already puts it well ahead of that.
Since preorders start right after the Direct, buyers get hands-on demos beforehand so they know what the game is.
Wasn't that the rumor that already got debunked?
Pretty sure that one was already denied?
And honestly, even a graphics-only remake would be totally fine with me.
Looking forward to today's Direct.
there's no way buyers wouldn't know what they're selling.
They always get hands-on demos before the Direct.
Sounds like there's a media hands-on session before TGS.
Word is it's on the 14th.
The Super Mario All-Stars collection was a full remake of everything, technically.
Leaks have historically come mostly from that buyer crowd.
Apparently it's an undeniable fact that Ocarina of Time is a 1:1 remake.
That's exactly why the story is that business negotiations start after the Direct — do you follow?
And either way, graphics-only remake or not, it doesn't matter — we'll know soon enough.
Wait, isn't this actually a rumor pointing toward a large-scale remake?
The guy above is arguing for a small-scale remake, right?
Monolith's been running job postings for "Zelda development staff" for about 7 years now,
so if that's the case, the development period would be substantial too.
Re: #91
Of course Monolith would be heavily recruiting Legend of Zelda staff —
things are only going to get more intense from here.
Background and Key Points of Discussion
Ocarina of Time was already ported to 3DS back in 2011, but that version was a “faithful port” that kept the dungeon layouts and story essentially unchanged. The HD versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess likewise focused mainly on graphical upgrades, with only limited changes to the actual content. Nate’s prediction discussed here breaks from those precedents, suggesting a “full remake” that reworks combat and action as well — though it remains unconfirmed information ahead of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct. Reactions in the thread were split: some expressed hope, arguing “a graphics-only remake would be pointless”; others raised concerns about the technical difficulty of seamless map design and dungeon redesign; and still others were skeptical of the leaker’s accuracy itself. It’s worth noting that, including whether Monolith Soft is the developer, Nintendo has made no official announcement at this point — everything remains speculation.
