  • Image format “JPEG XL” set for adoption by major browsers within 2026 — 5ch: “Guess WebP’s doomed”

Mozilla announced plans to officially support the next-generation image format “JPEG XL” in its upcoming “Firefox 157” release. The browser will use a Rust-based decoder developed by Google, and with Chrome’s team reportedly leaning the same way, the major browsers look set to fall into line by the end of 2026. WebP and AVIF have so far been the go-to successors to JPEG, but reactions in 5ch threads were mixed — some welcomed the news with comments like “guess WebP’s going away,” while others were cooler on it, saying things like “just another format to deal with” or “isn’t WebP/AVIF good enough already?”

Firefox reveals plans to support “JPEG XL”

Mozilla has announced plans to officially adopt the next-generation image format “JPEG XL” in Firefox 157.

It will use a Rust-based decoder developed by Google. Google Chrome’s development team has indicated similar intentions, meaning “JPEG XL” could see broad support across major browsers as soon as within 2026.

Sounds like it could be a security nightmare… A WebP vulnerability was discovered in 2023 where simply viewing an image could execute arbitrary code embedded in the file. There must still be tons of apps out there that haven't patched it.
    23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:34
Converting WebP back to JPG is a hassle, and it degrades the quality too — no upside whatsoever. Just standardize on JPG already.

    34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:26
    Re: #28
Actually, since WebP and later formats were built to replace the existing ones, they carry over all the options and settings from PNG, JPEG, etc. WebP lets you choose lossless or lossy and set a quality factor too. The "WebP or nothing!" crowd doesn't get that.
    35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:29
We've already got WebP and AVIF and now there's yet another one? Everyone already agrees the existing formats are good enough, so a new format's going to have a rough time catching on.
    37AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:39
Honestly I just want HEIC gone

Background and key points of this discussion

JPEG XL is an image format that was standardized internationally in 2022. It supports both lossless and lossy compression, can convert existing JPEG files without any loss of quality, and features progressive display that renders images starting from a low-resolution version, among other traits. Google had previously shelved plans to adopt it in Chrome at one point, and during that gap WebP and AVIF gained ground, leading some to view JPEG XL as a “format that got left behind.” With the announcement of a Rust-based decoder this time, previously raised concerns about memory safety have eased, and momentum for adoption has grown in both Firefox and Chrome. Reactions in the thread were split — some are optimistic that “WebP might disappear,” while others remain cautious, arguing it’s “just adding to format sprawl” or that “the existing formats are good enough.” In practice, even when a new format appears, it rarely replaces existing formats like JPEG or PNG right away; OS- and app-level support typically lags behind browser support, so multiple formats are likely to coexist for the foreseeable future.

  • Early-Morning Knocking at the Window Turns Out to Be a Barefoot Woman — 5ch: ‘Like Something Out of a Horror Movie, Even If She Was Just on Her Way to a Funeral’

According to a report by NBC Nagasaki Broadcasting, a mother and her two daughters in Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, were awarded a letter of appreciation last month after noticing a barefoot woman knocking on their window in the early hours and working with police to bring her to safety. The original article doesn’t say who the woman was or what happened to her afterward. On 5ch, most commenters assumed she was an elderly dementia patient who had wandered off, though some raised concerns about the mother leaving her young children alone with a stranger while she went to flag down police, others were frustrated that the report never revealed the woman’s identity, and plenty of posts jokingly played up how much the story resembled a real-life ghost story.

It’s still dim out in the early hours of a summer morning. What if someone you didn’t recognize were knocking on your window right now? In Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, last month, a mother and her two daughters were awarded a letter of appreciation for protecting a ‘mysterious figure’ who appeared in their yard at dawn — saving her from what could have been a life-threatening situation.

    199AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:54
The media is seriously clueless sometimes.
What people actually want to know is whether the old woman's identity got confirmed and whether she made it home.
Or, failing that, if her identity's still unknown, at least put her description in the article so people might be able to help identify her.
The fact that this article has none of that is just baffling.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

According to National Police Agency statistics, reports of people going missing due to dementia have been climbing year after year, and cases of unfamiliar elderly people showing up at private homes in the early morning or at night have been reported all over the country. The original article never confirms whether the woman in this case actually had dementia, and on the thread, replies like ‘that’s personal information’ kept coming up, so the discussion never got past speculation. Where opinions split was over whether it was right for the mother to leave a suspicious stranger alone with her young children while she went to lead police to the scene — some worried about the danger, while others defended the choice, arguing the situation made it obvious enough that the woman had dementia. There was also frustration that the woman’s identity and what happened to her afterward were never reported, with an undercurrent of unease about local news coverage that wraps itself up neatly as a ‘heartwarming story’ built around a letter of appreciation, without following through on what actually happened.

    Background and Key Points

Tsubaki Factory is an idol group under Hello! Project, and fans have long pointed out that the group’s livestreams and concerts are frequently scheduled during weekday daytime hours. This time, the first installment of the Instagram Live was announced for 2 PM on a weekday, drawing complaints since that’s a time slot when office workers and students struggle to tune in. The thread also raised questions about ticket sales for the Nippon Budokan concert and the order in which members’ individual events were being rolled out, with several posts linking the sequence of announcements to the agency’s PR strategy. Whether an archive of the stream will be kept has not been officially confirmed, so it’s worth noting that this remains speculation within the thread.

On 5channel, many commenters argued that if refusing the device meant being denied parole, it would amount to compulsion in all but name, while others took a cooler view, noting that consent is only required because this is a trial stage ahead of any actual legislation. It's only required because this is a 'pilot program' before any actual law exists —
there's obviously no way to force GPS devices on people without legislation first.
    264AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:21
    Re: #251
Exactly, which is why consent will stay a requirement even once it's actually rolled out.
    Everyone already sees that coming.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

GPS monitoring of sex offenders is already mandatory in some countries, such as the US, which even runs systems that publicize offenders’ whereabouts. Japan, however, has no law requiring former offenders to share their location data, so this is starting out as a pilot program limited to participants who give consent. The consent requirement exists precisely because the program is launching ahead of any actual legislation, and the recurring worry on the thread was that if this becomes standard practice, it could effectively turn into a de facto condition of parole — summed up repeatedly as ‘doesn’t refusing just mean no parole?’ At the same time, some pointed to a technical limitation: as long as offenders can remove or abandon the device, tracking location alone doesn’t directly prevent reoffending. Opinions split largely over how much weight to put on the word ‘consent.’

  • What certifications won’t go obsolete in the AI era? Forklift license and “denken” electrical engineer license come up top

On 5ch’s “Live Everything G” board, a thread heated up over which certifications and jobs are likely to keep their value even as AI takes over more work. Hands-on, legally mandated credentials like the forklift operator training course and the Certified Chief Electric Engineer (“denken”) license came up as safe bets, while some argued that tax accountants and middle managers are “on the verge of being replaced by AI.” The thread split over whether white-collar or blue-collar work will get wiped out first, and posters pointed to real examples of the shifting labor market, like companies reassigning AI-displaced staff into caregiving jobs.

Not unless the industry law gets revised
If you've actually got real-world experience in the real estate industry, you're probably saying that fully aware of what the takken license is really worth in practice

Background and key points of this discussion

The forklift operator training mentioned in the thread is a “skills training course” obtainable through institutions registered with prefectural labor bureaus — institutionally, a different category from a national exam like the Certified Chief Electric Engineer (“denken”) license. What the two have in common is that they involve hands-on work or legally required personnel appointments, which structurally makes them hard to replace with AI’s core strength of pure information processing. The thread’s comments clustered heavily around white-collar jobs like tax accountants and middle managers, but opinions stayed split — without reaching any conclusion — on whether white-collar layoffs are really happening first in AI-advanced countries, and just how much Japan’s employment protection laws will slow down replacement.

  • Post About Playing Switch 2 in Tabletop Mode at Home ‘It’s Super Comfortable’ Sparks Mixed Reactions

A post appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board saying the poster plays their Switch 2 in tabletop mode at home while keeping it plugged into an AC adapter. Some replies questioned why anyone would use tabletop mode when they already have a TV or monitor, while others pointed out that, given the console’s short battery life as a handheld, staying plugged into an AC adapter has essentially become a prerequisite. The thread then drifted through topics like screen quality, how clean people keep their console, and family situations, before settling into the usual console-war bickering.

That's exactly what the Switch 2 is for then 🫩

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 is a hybrid console that doubles as both a handheld and a home console, and its short battery life when used as a handheld has been a point of criticism for some time. The ‘keep it plugged in and use tabletop mode’ setup described in this thread can be understood as a practical workaround — giving up on true portability in favor of relying on the AC adapter. Meanwhile, the latter half of the thread drifted through topics like screen quality, how clean people keep their console, and family situations, before turning into the usual back-and-forth between diehard fans of rival consoles. This kind of exchange is a common pattern on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board, and individual comments shouldn’t be mistaken for an evaluation of the product itself. This article focuses mainly on excerpting the discussion around the original tabletop-mode setup.

*This article was compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “A Nintendo fan: ‘I keep my Switch 2 plugged in at home and play in tabletop mode, it’s super comfortable lol’ ← this one.”

A look at a casual chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board. The previous thread died at 846 replies, before it even lasted until “working-people time” — when regulars come back during the day — kicking off the new thread with everyone laughing at how fast it burned out. Along the way, regulars shared their rule-of-thumb that using Hololive-related terms in a thread title tends to hurt its momentum, and some praised the Vtuber “Rui” for looking better with the wing parts removed from her design. In the second half, a lunch photo sparked the innocent question of whether “lunch” can refer to a meal eaten outside of midday, and there was even a moment where a poster was gently scolded for tossing out a throwaway remark instead of one that could “spark more conversation” — offering a glimpse of the board’s distinctive atmosphere.

Background and key points of this topic

“Nandemo Jikkyou G” (aka “NanG”) is a 5ch board dedicated to live commentary and casual chat, known for how fast its threads cycle through. The opening reply, “Guess it didn’t even last until working-people time,” uses board-specific slang: the overnight-to-dawn hours are typically kept going mainly by unemployed users and people posting from home, while “working-people time” refers to when people with day jobs come back online — so the comment is a lighthearted jab at how quickly the previous thread burned through 846 replies. There’s also a remark that using Hololive-related terms in a thread title tends to hurt its momentum, something the board’s regulars have picked up on from experience. Later on, one poster’s throwaway line “man, I want some grilled fish” gets called out, followed by an example of a better reply — “this time of year really makes you crave some sanma” — which would have kept the conversation going. This exchange shows that NanG isn’t just a place to dump random one-liners; there’s an implicit culture of throwing out topics other people can actually respond to. Some replies containing discriminatory language or sexual images have been excluded from this article.

  • Pushback on “The Only Decent Android Is Galaxy” — 5ch Divided Over Which Phone Reigns Supreme

A thread on 5ch’s “Live Anything G” board (a general live-commentary board where users post in real time about whatever’s in the news) kicked off over how to pick an Android phone. It started with a post claiming “the only decent Android is Galaxy,” with posters recommending the Fold8 and the mid-range Galaxy A57, while Xperia kept taking hits over camera quality and Pixel got dragged for its past battery-fire issues and weak sales overseas. The conversation eventually spilled into iPhone-vs-Android territory too, splitting the room over OS usability and value for money.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Pixel 6a battery-fire issue raised in the thread isn’t just idle mudslinging — it’s a documented problem that Google addressed in 2024 with an actual battery replacement/warranty program. Xperia, meanwhile, takes a beating over camera quality in the thread, but it still has a loyal following for its music and video playback, making it a phone whose reputation really hinges on how you use it. The thread’s tension boils down to two recurring fault lines — “performance vs. usability” and “built for Japan vs. built for the world” — so there’s no simple ranking that settles it. The device signatures visible in some posts, left by 2chMate (a popular third-party 5ch browser that auto-tags posts with the poster’s phone model), suggest actual Galaxy and Xperia owners were weighing in themselves, not just spectators.

  • Rival Groups Blow Up During Juice=Juice’s Big Push, Sparking a Fan Feud — Hello! Project Board: ‘Pay It Back!’

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, where H!P fans gather, a debate broke out after BEYOOOOONDS’ new music video and CUTIE STREET’s live footage both blew up at the same time — right when the spotlight was supposed to be on Juice=Juice. Some posters, noting that Juice=Juice’s past viral moments helped boost other groups’ visibility, grumbled ‘time to return the favor,’ while others countered that growing the overall fanbase benefits everyone. Opinions also split over whether YouTube’s Trending rankings and view-count breakdowns really count as ‘proof of popularity,’ turning it into a debate that simple number-crunching can’t settle.

One Tsunku♂ (H!P's famed producer) song a year ← Juice doesn't even get Tsunku songs

    Re: #70
Like I said, Trending itself isn't a chart you should take at face value, so it's not worth worrying about.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Because Hello! Project operates by having each group take turns releasing new singles and live footage, fans naturally develop a sense of whose ‘turn to shine’ it is. This time, fan frustration boiled over because BEYOOOOONDS’ new MV release and CUTIE STREET’s live-video view counts both became talking points during what was supposed to be Juice=Juice’s moment in the spotlight — leaving some fans feeling shortchanged. The debate centers on whether YouTube’s Trending rankings and the breakdown of view counts can really be treated as ‘proof of popularity,’ and posters are split on what standard to judge that by. It’s a common misconception that making Trending hinges purely on how fast a video is watched, and doesn’t necessarily line up with total view count or viewing quality. There’s also a rift between fans who point out that Juice=Juice’s past viral moments helped raise BEYOOOOONDS’ profile and are now demanding that favor be ‘returned,’ and those who see fanbase growth as a two-way synergy that benefits everyone.

In the ongoing story of WEST.’s Kotaki Nozomu and Fujii Ryusei announcing their departure from STARTO ENTERTAINMENT, it’s been reported that Shigeoka Daiki failing to tell the other members in advance about the birth of his first child became one of the deciding factors behind their departure. On September 5, member Nakama Junta appeared live on a TV program and apologized to fans and industry figures. On the 5channel Geinou/Sports News+ (Geisoku) thread, opinions clashed: some argued it’s out of line to criticize someone over marriage or having a child, while others said that failing to inform fellow group members in advance is a serious breach of trust when you’re part of a group act.

“I’m sorry for causing anxiety and worry for our fans, and for causing so much trouble for everyone involved.”

The one who apologized during a live appearance on ABC TV’s Oshiete! News Live Seigi no Mikata on September 5 was Nakama Junta (38).

Isn't that what 'separating work and private life' actually means?

They were probably just close coworkers, not actual best friends.

    Re: #28
Well, it's not like it's a 'workplace' that produces anything.
If you're selling yourself as an idol, marriage is a huge change that can tank your commercial value.
And not even telling the members he already had a kid — that's basically implying, 'if I tell you guys something that hurts my value, you'll leak it.'

This old geezer can't tell if the group's called STARTO or West lol

    Re: #44
It was Johnny's group 'Johnny's WEST,' so you should know that much.
    47AnonymousSep 8, 2026 11:50
Idol groups should just disband once everyone hits 35.
Is there any upside to keeping going past that? They'll already have fans, so solo work should work out fine.

    Re: #47
25 is plenty. Even that feels like they're already too grown-up for it, honestly.
    56AnonymousSep 8, 2026 11:53
If anything he got married kind of late for his age, and people are still going on and on and on about it.

    Re: #56
That's not the point. The issue is he hid from the members that he was married and had a kid.
    59AnonymousSep 8, 2026 11:55
So he didn't even tell them after the baby was already born?
Past 30 and pulling that — come on.

    Re: #59
    Something's off with that, yeah.
    64AnonymousSep 8, 2026 11:57
They should really make a rule that idol groups disband once members turn 30.
Getting complained at for getting married in your late 30s/40s is just absurd.

V6 disbanded, but Tonisen (the group's older-member trio) kept right on performing though.

Not even telling his own agency manager his address is wild.
So does that mean he handles all his own comings and goings himself?

    Re: #81
Apparently he meets his manager somewhere near his house.
If he drove his own car to a job, people would find out the make and plate number, so he wouldn't do that.
Casual clothes are off-limits too — he reportedly prepares outfits that just look casual for photos.

    Re: #81
I heard he has a decoy house and the pickup car goes there instead.
    82AnonymousSep 8, 2026 12:06
What's with a guy needing to 'consult' his coworkers about having a baby?
Does he need their approval before they're allowed to have the kid or something?

    Re: #82
If marriage and kids affect an idol's popularity (and income), you'd want to ramp up solo work to make up for it.
To prepare for that, the others would want a heads-up in advance — not for 'permission,' but because they're professionals too.

    Re: #85
Idols who exist because of their fans don't get that luxury.
Even Kimutaku (Kimura Takuya) properly reported his marriage, after all.

    Re: #101

Re: #102 What's wrong with doing the same thing Kimutaku did?
Did Katori, Kusanagi, Nakai, and Inagaki (his SMAP bandmates) actually get told in advance and already know?

    Background and Points of Debate

WEST., who belong to STARTO ENTERTAINMENT (formerly Johnny & Associates), went on hiatus in 2024, and members Kotaki Nozomu and Fujii Ryusei have since announced their departure from the agency. This report claims that Shigeoka Daiki’s failure to tell the members in advance about the birth of his first child became one of the deciding factors in their departure, and on September 5 Nakama Junta was seen apologizing on a TV program. The thread was split over how much idols should be obligated to disclose about their private lives. Some argued that ‘marriage and childbirth are happy occasions and there’s no reason to be angry,’ while others countered that ‘when you’re active as a group, hiding information that affects your commercial value from your own bandmates is a matter of trust.’ Some compared it to how Kimura Takuya announced his marriage, but the thread itself never confirms whether his co-stars were actually informed in advance — that remains pure speculation. It’s also worth noting that neither an official account from the agency nor Shigeoka’s own detailed explanation can be confirmed from the thread’s content alone.
