  • Luffy’s New Move “Gonmu Gonmu no Dawn Kraken Gatling” Has 5ch Saying “That Name’s Impossible to Say”

Luffy’s new move “Gonmu Gonmu no Dawn Kraken Gatling,” unveiled in the latest One Piece chapter, became a hot topic on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-discussion board). Alongside comments that the lengthy move name was “just too hard to say,” posters weighed in on the abrupt way the new technique was revealed and on the backstory behind Luffy’s power shifting from “Gomu” (rubber) to “Nika.” Some even speculated the name was modeled on Dragon Quest’s tiered spell names (Frizz → Frizzle → Kafrizz), showing the kind of engagement only a long-running series can generate—though opinions were split on the pacing of recent battle arcs.

    Background and Talking Points

As with “Gonmu Gonmu no Dawn Kraken Gatling,” One Piece’s special move names have tended to grow longer and more elaborate in recent years, and over the course of a series that now spans more than 100 collected volumes, the way Luffy’s powers are described has shifted dramatically from the original “Gomu Gomu no~” naming. The thread was split between readers who accept this as simple power-creep and those who felt something was off about the naming and pacing of these reveals—the latter group also voicing frustration that “the battles feel flat for a battle manga.” At the same time, some pointed out connections to earlier arcs, like the “homage to the Enel fight,” showing the range of ways longtime readers engage with the series. It’s worth noting that no concrete facts were presented about the author’s health or the production setup behind the scenes—the speculation in the thread remains just that, speculation.

  • Kosuke Minowa: ‘I’m the One Who Gave Filming Permission’ — Weighs In on Tomomi Itano’s Bathhouse Video Backlash, Defends His Take Amid Online Fury

Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa posted on X on September 7, 2026, saying “I’m the one who gave Tomomi Itano permission to film in the Ritz-Carlton’s communal bath,” apologizing to both the Ritz-Carlton and Itano. The remark came after a video of former AKB48 member Itano filming the bathhouse changing area drew criticism online, and Minowa simultaneously argued that “society keeps getting more suffocating.” Minowa has form here: in June 2025 he claimed “I gave it to her” amid suspicions that Shoko Nakagawa had bought a scalped Switch 2, only to later retract the statement and apologize. On 5ch, users questioned both the timing and style of his latest comment, with reactions split between support and criticism.

Gentosha editor Kosuke Minowa updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 8th, sharing his views on the controversy surrounding former AKB48 member and talent Tomomi Itano, who filmed a video in a hotel bathhouse changing room, sparking criticism online.

Minowa first posted on the 7th: “I’m the one who gave Tomomi Itano permission to film in the Ritz-Carlton’s communal bath. I’ve caused tremendous trouble for both the Ritz-Carlton and Itano. I am truly sorry.”

This isn’t the first time Minowa has done this: last June, when talent Shoko Nakagawa posted an unboxing video of the “Switch 2” and suspicion spread that she had bought it from a scalper, he declared on YouTube, “I’m the one who gave it to her.” He later walked the statement back, saying, “Thinking about it now, it wasn’t actually Ms. Nakagawa,” and apologized.

If Itano lawyers up and apologizes, this all gets resolved and her likability even goes up.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Minowa is known as a Gentosha editor, and he has also built a name for himself through his friendship with Takafumi Horie and his online membership community. He has form here: he previously claimed “I’m the one who gave it to her” over the Nakagawa Switch 2 scalping suspicion, only to later retract it, saying “it wasn’t actually Ms. Nakagawa,” and apologize. His latest statement — “I’m the one who gave filming permission” — was read as a repeat of the same pattern: stepping into the line of fire himself to try to smooth things over. The Itano controversy has drawn criticism specifically because she filmed in a hotel bathhouse changing room, a space used by an unspecified number of other guests; the fact that the apology extended to the Ritz-Carlton as well as Itano herself suggests the incident also threatened the hotel’s reputation. On the thread, opinion split over Minowa’s claim that “society keeps getting more suffocating” — some pushed back, arguing he shouldn’t reframe criticism of a simple breach of manners as an issue of “suffocation,” while others expressed some sympathy for the idea, citing things like street-smoking bans as examples of growing social intolerance.

  • Emi Kaneko: “Marriage Gives Young People Legal and Social Security” — 5ch: “The Kids Are Right”

Former House of Representatives member and TV personality Emi Kaneko shared her views on YouTube on September 7. According to a survey of 100,000 young people conducted by Japan’s Children and Families Agency, 35% said they have no intention of marrying, with unstable income cited as the top reason. Kaneko argued this overlooks a benefit of marriage, saying “isn’t there something like legal and social security to be gained?” On 5ch, however, a wide range of opinions clashed — complaints about the financial risk and restrictions that come with marriage, alongside anxiety about growing older while staying single — and the discussion often talked past itself.

Emi Kaneko sends a message to the 35% of young people who “don’t intend to marry”: “Isn’t there something like legal and social security to be gained?”

Yeah, that's real. My old company wouldn't put you in a management role unless you were married.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The article is based on a survey of 100,000 young people conducted by Japan’s Children and Families Agency, in which the top reason for reluctance to marry was unstable income. Kaneko’s remarks respond to that economic anxiety by pointing to legal and social security as a benefit, but many replies in the thread pushed back, arguing that the restrictions and risks of marriage outweigh any sense of security — leaving the two sides talking past each other. There was also pointed sarcasm about how convincing her remarks really are, since her husband is former lawmaker Kensuke Miyazaki, who was previously reported to have had an affair. On the surface, the numbers might look like simple “marriage aversion” among young people, but the thread’s reactions suggest many would reconsider given the right economic conditions — framing it less as a shift in mindset and more as a matter of living conditions.

The debate spread beyond Juice=Juice itself into skill comparisons with Angerme and Tsubaki Factory and arguments over group rankings, with some crediting the current lineup’s rise and others pointing to the history of the group’s longtime members.

    62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:48
During the slump after core members Miyamoto, Takagi, Kanazawa, and Inaba left,
the remaining members kept working hard and trained up the new members,
steadily building their skills — that's how today's big breakthrough happened
Even after all the original members left and their fans dropped off,
the group's skill had already surpassed the originals, so they delivered results within a year and a half
Juice's success comes down to the current members' effort and skill

Angerme, on the other hand, relied on Rika and Miko's popularity, slacked off, and never built up real skill
Even after getting an instant-impact talent like Nagano, they're still stuck in a slump
with no sign of a comeback — if anything, they're falling apart

    Guess that settles it

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The phrase “singing freely” appears to refer to personalized vocal arrangements — like vocal fakes and ad-libs — that go beyond singing exactly as recorded. Some posters in the thread pointed out that Akari Uemura was the pioneer of this singing style, framing it not simply as a matter of skill level but as a difference in artistic approach. At the same time, the divide is clear: one camp values faithful reproduction of the studio recording, the other champions individual free expression, and the two views have run in parallel without any resolution. A point readers can easily misread is that Taisei’s comment itself doesn’t declare one group of members superior to the other — it simply describes a difference in singing style. Still, starting from this remark, the thread expanded into skill comparisons between Juice=Juice, Angerme, and Tsubaki Factory, and into arguments over group rankings, with parts of the discussion drifting well away from what the original comment was actually about.

  • CD Sales Jump 16% as Gen Z Falls for Them — Why Are Discs Making a Comeback?

According to U.S. market research firm Luminate, CD sales rose 16% year-over-year in the first half of 2026, outpacing vinyl records’ 2.4% increase. The buyers are said to be mostly Gen Z and millennials, with 16.3 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. Reacting to the news of why physical CDs are being chosen in the streaming era, a 5ch thread buzzed with a mix of takes — from “it’s just merch for supporting your favorite idol (oshi-katsu)” and “collector’s items” to skepticism over whether Gen Z actually bothers listening to them, debates over CD durability and sound quality, and comparisons with vinyl, cassettes, and MiniDiscs.

    Mon, 9/7, 5:30 PM

According to the data, many Gen Z listeners are using those shiny round discs to listen to pre-90s music. Why has the CD boom returned in the middle of the streaming era? Here’s a look at what’s behind the revival.

CDs are selling again. According to a report from industry research firm Luminate, CD sales rose 16% in the first half of 2026. And you might be surprised to learn who’s buying them: Gen Z and millennial fans are snapping up those shiny aluminum discs — so quintessentially ’90s — at a furious pace. In the U.S. alone, that amounts to 16.3 million copies. That growth rate even outpaces vinyl records, which grew just 2.4%. There’s no doubt about it anymore: today’s music fans have caught full-blown Discman fever.

I'd heard CDs have a short lifespan, but one that old still plays?

Background and Key Points of Debate

The CD revival tends to get framed as an extension of the recent vinyl boom, but what stands out in Luminate’s survey is that CD growth actually outpaced vinyl’s 2.4% increase. Where the thread split was over whether this growth reflects “buying CDs to actually listen to music” versus “buying them for fan support (oshi-katsu) or as collectibles.” Many voiced doubt that Gen Z is really playing these CDs, pointing out that this doesn’t square with how few people still own playback equipment. Some posts attributed the trend to consumers in a specific country, but neither the article nor the thread offered any figures to back that up, so it remains speculation. Opinions on CD sound quality and durability vary a lot by individual, and the format wars — CDs vs. vinyl vs. cassettes vs. MiniDiscs — are a debate that’s been rehashed across generations.

  • Nippon Ichi Software President: ‘Sony Won’t Tell Us Their Long-Term Plans for Killing Off Discs’

In an interview with overseas media, Nippon Ichi Software president Kenzo Saruhashi revealed that regarding Sony’s plan to phase out disc versions of PS5 games, “they won’t tell us the long-term intent or plan.” Sony has stated that new titles releasing from January 2028 onward will drop disc versions entirely, while production of discs for existing titles will continue. On 5ch’s Gehan (hardware/industry) board, discussion centered on Sony’s thin information-sharing with third parties, opinions on Nintendo Switch 2’s Game-Key Cards, and the fallout from the disappearance of the packaged-game market.

    4AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:10
Sony's own first-party titles keep bombing back-to-back and they're basically living off third parties, yet they're still pulling their 'keep it in the family' act even on third-party devs? That's exactly why studios are dropping PlayStation, and why even the loyalists mockingly nicknamed "Discard-Station" fans (a slang jab meaning even PS diehards) can't get info out of them either 😊
    7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:17

    12AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:21
Look at Square Enix — they scrambled to lock in a release date for FF7 Remake Part 3, and the DLC won't even come out until 2028 or later.

    Re: #12
Sounds like their sales plans got thrown into chaos. They were probably planning an all-in-one collector's edition down the line, but without a disc it'll just be a flimsy paper edition — that could hurt sales.
    15AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:23
Small-to-mid publishers make more profit from pushing physical copies into stores than they lose from used-game sales. That's exactly why they've been kowtowing to Sony all this time.
    19AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:25
    Re: #15
Big retailers don't obsess over pre-order bonuses, but small retailers lobby publishers hard to make sure their own store-exclusive bonus is a good one.

That's literally how store-exclusive bonuses exist in the first place.
    22AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:29
    Re: #1
One interesting point: sales don't seem to change even with Game-Key Cards — that matches the impression you get from the weekly sales data too. To begin with, sales aren't really different between the Switch and Switch 2 versions on cross-gen releases. For some titles the Switch 2 version even sells better, and that's especially true for third-party titles lately.

Given that, there's not much reason right now for third parties to shy away from releasing on Game-Key Cards (and going by the data, actual cartridge packaging doesn't really boost sales either, so it's not much of a loss). If a game's file size is huge there could be some impact, but for a normal-sized game it's a non-issue. That said, long-term, rising storage prices could become a factor — that would force extra spending onto users, which inevitably eats into their game-buying budget. So it's still better for a game not to eat up too much storage.
    30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:34
    Re: #22
City Connection raised the price and went with physical Switch 2 Game Cards — I'd honestly like to know if that's actually paying off (i.e., boosting sales).

    33AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:37
This is one of the downsides people on the Gehan board have pointed out. Once the packaged-game market disappears, limited editions and pre-order-bonus tie-ins obviously go with it. The ones who'll really suffer from that are exactly small-to-mid third parties like Nippon Ichi.
    60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:05

It makes sense that third parties rate Game-Key Cards highly. From a third party's perspective, the cheaper cartridge cost is basically pure upside with almost no downside. Sure, it trades that for downsides on the user's end — extra storage burden and requiring an internet connection — but if it doesn't hurt sales, third parties can just shrug that off.

If used physical sales were really doing that much damage, I'd think third parties would've already gone digital-only long before Sony ever discontinued discs.

    71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:12
'Not telling them the plan'? They've already publicly told us users that new titles releasing from January 2028 onward will drop discs entirely, and that disc production for existing titles will continue. So what exactly hasn't been told to publishers?
    79AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:16
    Re: #71
How long will disc drive production even continue? Will PS6 support a disc drive, and if not, is there some alternative media? Are they planning — or even able — to keep the packaged market alive with code-in-box releases?

Honestly, it's nothing but open questions.
    81AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:17
Code-in-box will probably disappear too. Making a plastic box the same size as now just to hold a code is a waste of money. The boxed version of something like GTA6 is likely just a stopgap for this transitional period. After January 2028, what gets sold at retail will probably be download cards, like what Nintendo's doing now. There are only a handful of collectors who enjoy lining up game boxes on a shelf anyway, so it should be fine to cut that group loose.
    84AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:19
    Re: #81
Code-in-box and download cards are handled completely differently as products, so it's not that simple. And besides, that's a method PlayStation already discontinued once before — doing it again would mean deliberately reviving it.

Once physical copies disappear, word-of-mouth spread beyond advertising goes away too, and it becomes a really closed-off world. Even a game that becomes a huge hit on Steam, most people barely register it, right?

To become a social phenomenon like Dragon Quest, people actually need to be talking about it. What disappears is the place where an average person might think 'hey, let me give this a try.'

What this tells us is that Sony's own announcement still leaves room for a walk-back. The fact that they haven't officially notified third parties basically confirms it. If backlash gets strong enough, they'll probably reverse course — and when that happens, I bet the defenders will do a 180 so hard their arms nearly twist off.

Can't, they already switched to a different disc factory.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Sony has already announced that, starting in January 2028, it will stop releasing physical disc versions of new PS5 titles while continuing to produce discs for existing titles, and on the thread there was pushback along the lines of “saying they haven’t communicated anything seems off.” At the same time, some argued that what publishers actually want to know goes deeper than the consumer-facing announcement — things like how long disc drive production itself will continue and what Sony’s approach will be for PS6 — and that gap is what President Saruhashi’s remarks reflect. Data was cited showing Nintendo’s Game-Key Cards haven’t had much impact on sales for smaller-capacity titles, but there was also concern that if the packaged-game market shrinks, small and mid-size third parties will lose revenue streams they’ve relied on, like limited editions and used-game sales. Cases of major titles such as GTA6 and the Final Fantasy VII remake sticking with discs were also raised as points of comparison.

  • Mos Burger Tastes Better Than McDonald’s — So Why Is It Struggling? 5ch Asks: ‘Aren’t the Stores Always Cramped?’

Mos Burger is sometimes said to be “tastier than McDonald’s and about the same price,” but 5ch users got into a debate over why it still isn’t pulling in more customers. The gripes raised included too few stores, long waits between ordering and getting your food, skimpy portions, and repeated price hikes. A photo showing menu prices sparked back-and-forth like “was it really that expensive?” and “which store is that even from,” with opinions split on the real price range. On the flip side, some praised the chicken items and onion rings, while others pointed out that McDonald’s own quality has been slipping lately — adding up to a verdict that wasn’t a simple case of one chain beating the other.

    They all turned into "Zetteria."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mos Burger has built its identity around pricier, quality-focused ingredients, while McDonald’s has leaned on its huge store network and low prices — so even though both are burger chains, they occupy different lanes. What split the thread wasn’t the taste itself so much as everyday practicality: too few stores and too far to reach, slow service, and small portions. Reactions to the price-list photo were mixed too, with people saying it didn’t match the prices at their own local branch, hinting that there may be real price gaps between stores. It’s also worth flagging that the claim in the thread that Lotteria got “renamed” to “Zetteria” is just 5ch slang riffing on its parent company Zensho — not an actual name change — which is easy to mistake for fact. Beyond simple taste comparisons, differences in everyday convenience seem to be what really drives how often people end up choosing one chain over the other.

  • Suica Penguin’s Successor Character Narrowed Down to Final 3 Candidates

The penguin character familiar to everyone from JR East’s “Suica” IC card has had its potential successors narrowed down to three final candidates, and the news blew up on 5ch. Thread posters were floored to learn that the penguin was never actually created exclusively for Suica in the first place — it originated from a picture-book character that illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki has been drawing since 1998 — with many replying “had no idea.” Meanwhile, the new candidate designs drew harsh criticism like “garbage design,” and posts pushing people to vote for one candidate, “B,” appeared as well, raising doubts about how fair the selection process really is.

The "Suica Penguin" Was Never Actually a Suica Character

The creator of the Suica Penguin is illustrator and picture-book author Chiharu Sakazaki. A lot of people on social media are reacting as if "the Suica Penguin was born for Suica," but that's actually a misconception.

Sakazaki has been putting out penguin picture books since 1998. If you look at those books, you'll see that the penguin in them is exactly what the Suica Penguin was based on.

    Guess it just changed careers

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Suica Penguin originated from a picture-book character illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki has been drawing since 1998, rather than being an original design made specifically for Suica. In the thread, many commenters reacted with surprise (“had no idea”) at this backstory, suggesting the origins of a character beloved for over 25 years were surprisingly little known. The debate split mainly two ways. One was over how to judge the new candidate designs — while harsh criticism like “garbage design” was common, some pushed back, pointing to Myaku-Myaku (the divisive mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka) as proof that “you get used to anything once it’s familiar.” The other was distrust of the selection process itself, with posts urging people to vote for Candidate B and suspicions that the whole thing might be “a fixed match.” Note that various theories about why the penguin is being retired — “royalty costs,” “some scandal,” and so on — circulated in the thread, but none of them are based on any official statement from JR East and should be treated as unconfirmed.

Self-checkout, QR-code ordering, touch-panel operation — tasks once handled by store staff are increasingly being pushed onto customers. Sparked by a SPA! article published September 8, the story drew a wave of reactions on 5ch’s News Express+ board, with a string of concrete anecdotes covering frustration over the lack of any customer benefit like discounts, anxiety over scanning mistakes, debate over how to handle foreign customers, what happens during power outages, and confusion over Matsuya’s hard-to-use ticket machines. The discussion also branched into comparisons of cashless payment rates and overseas tipping culture, with opinions split.

Self-checkout, QR-code ordering, touch panels, generative AI… Digital technology is supposed to make life more convenient, but with new systems popping up one after another, plenty of people feel they can’t keep up. Talking to people who run into this “wall of high-tech” in daily life reveals circumstances that can’t simply be chalked up to being “bad with machines” or “tech-illiterate.”

    There is a benefit.
If it lowers the store's costs, the customer's burden goes down too.
You might think "the store's just pocketing the difference," but that's not how it works.
Cutting labor costs through efficiency helps hold down the rising cost of labor overall.
At the very least, if a store trims staff (and labor costs) by streamlining, that shrinks the scale of any resulting price hikes, which ends up being a plus for the customer too.

I do kind of feel like there should be a discount equal to the handling fee saved, but…
thanks to old folks lining up at staffed or cash registers for the past decade or so, the cashless self-checkout lanes are always empty — I've never once had to wait in line there. I'd call that a benefit.

This is a worldwide trend, so quit complaining about every little thing.
Japan's already an IT backwater lapped several times over as it is,
and its cashless payment rate is dead last among developed countries by a mile.

Things are only going to get more automated as AI advances, so adapt instead of whining.

    Re: #236
Japan's cashless payment rate isn't actually "dead last by a mile" among developed countries.
It's true Japan has long lagged behind cashless leaders like South Korea (about 99%) and China (about 83%), as well as the UK and US. But according to a comparison of major countries by the Cashless Promotion Council, based on data from sources like the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), some developed countries actually rank lower than Japan.

Why do you lie so quickly?
    Japan: 42.8%
Countries lower than Japan: Germany (about 24%)

    Usage by country:

United States: Business usage is high, around 70%, and it also has the most fax machines in use worldwide. The main reason it's still used is said to be that "it's guaranteed to arrive."

Germany: Workplace usage is around 50%. The top reason given is "many business partners still use fax."

Japan: Business usage is only around 40%. People sometimes say "only Japan still uses fax," but there's steady demand overseas too, including in the West.

    Re: #328
A tip-selection screen shows up on the tablet's payment screen,
with "Recommended: 18%" written on it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The spread of self-checkout and QR-code ordering is driven by rising labor costs and staff shortages, and as the article points out, the core grievance is that customers are picking up extra work with little in return, such as a discount. In the thread, a claim that “Japan’s cashless payment rate is dead last among developed countries” was corrected by another poster citing Bank for International Settlements-linked data, noting that “Japan is at 42.8%, higher than Germany’s roughly 24%” — a fact-check that doesn’t come through from the article alone. Meanwhile, an anecdote about a tip-selection screen appearing at self-checkout in the US reflects a quirk specific to tipping-culture countries that’s hard to picture from a Japanese perspective. On the power-outage question, some pointed out that even if the cash drawer can be opened manually, it just shifts everything to cash-only transactions rather than solving the underlying problem — food for thought on the limits of unstaffed operations. And as with Matsuya’s ticket machines, the view emerged that inconsistent operation from store to store comes less from customers being bad with machines than from uneven design.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread ““Why are customers now doing what used to be the staff’s job?” Voices of people worn out by self-checkout, QR, and touch-panel ordering — confused by inconsistent operation from store to store.”

  • JR East Announces 3 Finalist Designs for New ‘Suica’ Mascot — Penguin Retires Next March

On September 8, JR East announced the three finalist designs for a new mascot to succeed “Suica no Penguin,” which has served as Suica’s image character for 25 years, and opened a user vote that same day at 3:00 PM. Voting runs until 11:59 PM on September 23, with one vote per person regardless of nationality or age. The penguin will retire on March 31 next year. On 5channel threads, the candidate designs proved divisive — with comments like “I can’t tell if it’s a squirrel or a koala” — and the discussion turned into a stream of alternative suggestions, including people pushing their own AI-generated polar bear design and others backing the Ezo flying squirrel featured on JR Hokkaido’s Kitaca card.

    9/8 (Tue) 15:53

JR East announced on the 8th that it would begin a user vote at 3:00 PM that day to decide the new image character for its “Suica” transit IC card. Whichever of the three finalist designs receives the most votes will be adopted. “Suica no Penguin,” beloved for 25 years since Suica’s introduction in 2001, will retire on March 31 next year.

The company explained its reasoning: “The new image character embodies the ‘Suica Renaissance’ vision and will be a character that grows alongside Suica as a symbol of our connection with customers and communities. Because we wanted to build Suica’s future together with as many customers as possible, we decided to determine it through a customer vote.” Voting runs until 11:59 PM on September 23. It’s being held on a dedicated website, and anyone in Japan or abroad who agrees to the terms can vote once, regardless of age, gender, occupation, or nationality.

Myaku-Myaku (Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai's mascot) got brutally trashed at first too, but ended up hugely popular by the end. It's really just a matter of getting used to it. I bet the B or C design would work out fine too

Had no idea about this, but it's actually cute. The black-and-white coloring is probably meant to match Suica no Penguin, right? If so, they should've based the penguin's successor on black-and-white too. Otherwise, if they're just matching the Suica card's colors instead, there's zero consistency in this Re: #1 lineup
    199AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:45

Another thread had an explanation of the design intent

    Background and Talking Points

Suica no Penguin has been the mascot since Suica launched in 2001 — a rare case of a mascot going unchanged for 25 years. This time, JR East prepared three finalist designs and is basing the final choice directly on the vote results, a detail that’s easy to overlook, along with the fact that anyone in Japan or abroad can vote once regardless of nationality or age. On the thread, the dominant reaction was that the new candidates are hard to identify as any particular animal, and the conversation was largely driven by users generating their own AI images as counter-proposals. At the same time, some pointed to Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai’s mascot “Myaku-Myaku,” which was also panned at first before gradually winning people over, arguing this is simply a matter of getting used to something new — so opinion remains split. There were also posts claiming the switch was made “to avoid paying licensing fees” on the old penguin design, but no such explanation appears in the official announcement, so that claim should be treated as speculation only.
