  • Yen Hits 152 Level, Breaking Through the “155 Wall” to Strongest in Half a Year

In the foreign exchange market on the 8th, the yen briefly strengthened to the 152 level against the dollar, its strongest level in roughly half a year, since this past February. The move effectively broke through the “155 wall” — a line the yen hadn’t managed to push past even amid joint Japan-US currency intervention. On 5channel threads, opinions split over where the “right” level actually is, ranging from calls for a return to the 120s to views that around 140 reflects the yen’s true strength. Debate also continued over whether speculative trading was the main driver, and just how much the Japan-US interest rate gap is really influencing the move.

The reason the BOJ and securities analysts are all hawks is probably because they can't hold stocks themselves and don't want to watch them keep rising — so they're pushing rates up to bring stocks down and boost their own deposit interest.

I don't think the interest rate gap is really the main thing
Sure, it's one factor, and it's definitely part of why we're in a strong-yen phase right now
But it's a much simpler story than that — the yen as a currency just keeps losing value, so it gets cheaper

A week ago it was 160 to the dollar
A little over a month ago it was 164
    Now it's 152
You'd think people would've figured it out by now — exchange rates don't reflect the real economy at all

Nobody in the FX market is trading based on "what's the fair value of the dollar?"
It's just a dumb market where a mass of speculators react to economic headlines and trade purely on "which direction?" (a huge pile of speculators just running the same conditioned reflex year-round — sell on bearish-currency news, buy on bullish-currency news)

Ask yourself whether there was any news this past week about Japan's national strength or currency credibility suddenly jumping — and it becomes obvious that the massive swings and the overshoot on yen weakness we're seeing now have nothing to do with "national strength" or "credibility"

Any of you idiots who kept crying about "national strength" and "credibility" actually got a counterargument?

Re: #175 Why not just limit the money supply?
They're not even doing the basic thing of tightening currency supply during inflation

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “155 wall” refers to a psychological threshold that the yen, despite joint Japan-US market intervention, had been unable to meaningfully push back through toward strength. This time it briefly dipped below that line, with the yen strengthening to the 152 level. Opinion on the thread split mainly over the cause: some emphasized the narrowing Japan-US interest rate gap, while others argued it was nothing more than short-term speculative positioning. There was also a wide range of views on how far the yen would need to strengthen to be considered “fair value,” from calls for a return to the 120s to the view that around 140 reflects Japan’s true economic strength. Worth keeping in mind: a stronger yen benefits consumers by lowering import prices, but it can be a headwind for exporters’ earnings and stock prices — so it’s not simply true that “a stronger yen = an easier life.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Newsspeed+) thread “Yen briefly hits 152 to the dollar, breaking the “155 wall” that held even through Japan-US currency intervention — strongest in about half a year 9/8.”

  • Is a Middle-Aged Anime/Gaming Hobby ‘Immature’? 5ch Weighs In: ‘Anime Is Junk Food’

In response to the stock phrase used to justify single life — “I’ve got games, anime, and my oshi (fandom devotion) to keep me happy” — users on 5ch’s “Nanでも実況G” (NanJ) board got into a generational debate. It started as a jab at single men in their 40s, but quickly escalated into a clash over whether watching anime as a middle-aged adult is a sign of staying young or just immaturity. Some dismissed anime as “junk food” entertainment, while others pushed back, arguing it’s fundamentally no different from dramas or movies — with both married and single posters chiming in to needle each other along the way.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Debate over the claim that “single men aren’t lonely because they have games, anime, and oshi katsu (fandom devotion)” is a recurring theme in the “single-shaming” threads that regularly pop up on 5ch, and this time it played out among men in their 30s and 40s. There were two main points of contention. One was the generational question of whether middle-aged people enjoying anime is immature or simply a diversification of hobbies. The other was whether “oshi katsu” genuinely enriches one’s life, or whether it’s just a buzzword used to encourage spending. Some posters claimed the anime market is expanding, but it’s worth noting this was a personal opinion without any cited source. As is typical in these threads, the debate — regardless of whether posters were married or single — tended to circle back to differing values around hobbies, with metaphor-driven exchanges like post #87’s “anime is junk food” comment continuing throughout.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (NanJ) thread “Guy confirmed single forever at 30: “I’ve got games, anime, and oshi katsu!!” ← Yeah, that’s still understandable“.

  • Rosy Chronicle’s Free Live Splits Into 3 Parts — 5ch Speculates on Why the Meet-and-Greets Got Divided Up

Hello! Project’s Rosy Chronicle has announced details for its free live event “4th Single Free Live Circuit,” to be held on September 23, 2026 at Seibuen Cycle Theater. The mini-live will be split into three parts starting at 12:30, 15:00, and 17:30, each paired with a “send-off” style meet-and-greet session. On 5ch reaction threads, speculation quickly piled up: “Maybe it’s split to fit in breaks,” “Maybe it’s meant to ease the members’ workload.” Meanwhile, some pointed out that the mini-live sets seem to be getting shorter than last time, and others questioned how ticket exchanges would work for fans holding multiple participation tickets — with the operational format itself becoming the main focus of discussion.

    21AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:31
Splitting it in two dilutes the meaning of being last in line, so it's actually a minus for sales.

    Members? Or fans?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

At Hello! Project release events, it’s standard practice to follow a short mini-live with a meet-and-greet session called a “send-off” (o-miokuri). Splitting a single day into multiple parts is often done out of consideration for venue capacity and the physical toll on performing members. While some in the thread took it positively, calling it a “work-style reform,” others worried the mini-live sets themselves might be shrinking — opinions were split. The relationship between the “priority area entry ticket” and the “participation ticket,” along with how ticket types are handled across the different parts, may be confusing for readers unfamiliar with Hello! Project’s event formats — worth noting that the thread’s focus centers less on simple popularity debate and more on curiosity about the mechanics of the meet-and-greet system itself.

  • Former “Green Juice Prince” Proposes Renaming Japan’s “Tokuryu” Crime Gangs: “Give Them an Embarrassing Name”

On September 8, businessman Yuta Misaki — formerly known as the “Green Juice Prince” — took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the term “tokuryu” (used for Japan’s anonymous, fluid-membership crime groups), saying it “sounds like they’re trying to look cool,” and proposed changing the name. On a 5ch Entertainment & Sports News+ thread, posters debated whether saddling the groups with a derogatory nickname would actually deter them, citing the precedent of bosozoku biker gangs being rebranded “chinsotan” (a mocking term roughly meaning “pathetic speed freaks”). Many were skeptical, arguing a name change means nothing to operatives who join purely for the money, while others countered that the sheer embarrassment factor could still work as a psychological deterrent.

    Tue 9/8, 6:34 PM

Yuta Misaki (37), the businessman formerly known as the “Green Juice Prince,” updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 8th with his personal take on the trend of calling anonymous, fluid-membership crime groups “tokuryu.”

Misaki opened with: “It’s a sign of the times when you go in for a job interview at a normal company and end up getting steered toward a shady ‘dark part-time job.’ Honestly, I think they should change the name ‘tokuryu’ too — it sounds a little too cool for what it actually is.”

    177AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:19
    Re: #164
I think it's short for "anonymous, fluid crime group" or something like that

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Tokuryu” is a term Japan’s National Police Agency has used since around 2023 to describe the “dark part-time job” (yami baito) style groups that recruit operatives through social media for specialized fraud and robbery schemes. Unlike organized crime syndicates with a fixed hierarchy, these groups are defined by fluidity — the people giving orders and the people carrying out the crimes can change with every job. The thread’s debate centered on whether turning the name into an insult would actually deter anyone. Many were skeptical, pointing to the precedent of bosozoku bikers, who kept riding even after being mockingly rebranded “chinsotan.” Others pushed back, noting that while bosozoku members craved status and cool factor among their peers, tokuryu operatives mostly sign up for the money — a difference in motivation that makes the comparison too simple. Misaki’s own back-and-forth over what to call himself stayed firmly in self-deprecating joke territory.

  • Sandwichman’s Date Sidelined by Stroke — Croquette Show Down to Its Last 2 Stockpiled Episodes

At its programming lineup briefing on September 8, BS-TBS addressed the status of “Sando Date no Korokke Agattemasu” (“Sandwichman’s Date’s Croquettes Are Ready,” Fridays 10pm), which stars Sandwichman’s Mikio Date. Date announced on August 28 that he would be stepping away from work for the rest of the year due to a stroke, and the show has been airing previously recorded episodes while the network says it will decide future content with Date’s health and wishes as the top priority. On 5ch, the thread buzzed with suggestions for stand-in hosts now that only a couple of stockpiled episodes reportedly remain, worries about the health implications of a show built around eating croquettes, and speculation over what happens to Date’s commercial deals.

On the 8th, BS-TBS held a programming lineup briefing at the network’s headquarters in Akasaka, Tokyo, and touched on “Sando Date no Korokke Agattemasu” (Fridays, 10pm).

Mikio Date of the comedy duo Sandwichman, who appears on the show, announced on August 28 that he would be suspending his activities for the rest of the year due to a stroke.

The network commented, “Going forward, we will consider the show’s content with Mr. Date’s health and wishes as our top priority,” and has continued airing already-recorded episodes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The severity of aftereffects and length of recovery from a stroke vary enormously case by case, and reporting hasn’t revealed the specifics of Date’s condition or a timeline for his return. It’s not unusual for BS (satellite) programs — given tighter production budgets and fewer broadcast slots — to run on previously recorded stock for several months, and the thread itself noted that “BS shows are basically all reruns anyway.” Discussion also expanded into territory the network’s statement didn’t touch on, like what becomes of the soy sauce commercial he appears in, and whether a food-touring format is even appropriate given the health concerns involved. Worth keeping in mind: the network has only said health will be the “top priority,” without spelling out any concrete criteria for whether the show continues or when it might resume.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[BS] ‘Sando Date’s Croquettes Are Ready’ — Date sidelined by stroke, only 2 stock episodes left, ‘Going forward we want to make a comprehensive decision with Mr. Date’s health as the top priority’.”

  • Comedian Great Gidayu Dies at 67, Duncan’s Tribute — 5ch: ‘In Downtown Tokyo, “You Idiot” Is Basically a Greeting’

Comedian Great Gidayu (real name Masayuki Suzuki), a former member of the “Takeshi Army” troupe, died on September 7 at age 67. Duncan, his longtime friend and fellow troupe member, spoke to reporters and offered a tribute: “He had such a peaceful look on his face. But it’s too soon. Gidayu, you idiot.” News that Gidayu had spent years on dialysis for diabetes became a hot topic on 5ch, with many commenters remarking, “It’s amazing he lived this long.” Others weighed in on the Takeshi Army’s signature phrase “baka yaro” (you idiot/damn fool), explaining that “in Tokyo’s old downtown neighborhoods, it’s practically a greeting.”

Following the death of Takeshi Army entertainer Great Gidayu (real name Masayuki Suzuki) at age 67 on the 7th, fellow troupe member Duncan (67) spoke with Sankei Sports on the 8th, paying tribute to the friend he’d shared over 40 years of ups and downs with.

Duncan learned of Gidayu’s death on the day it happened, the 7th. “Around 4 p.m., right after a movie screening wrapped up, I got a call from his manager and went straight to see him,” he revealed.

    Re: #77
In the old downtown neighborhoods, "you idiot" is basically a greeting.
Hard to tell from text, but the tone is clearly different from an actual insult.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Gidayu is often mistakenly remembered for the “Confession Booth” segment on the popular 1980s show “Oretachi Hyokin-zoku,” but that segment was actually hosted by Butchy Musha — a point several thread commenters were quick to correct. The thread also noted that the Takeshi Army originated from members Beat Takeshi gathered to form a sandlot baseball team, and that its first captain wasn’t top disciple Sonomanma Higashi but another member. Gidayu is also said to have spent many years on dialysis for diabetes, and opinions in the thread split over how to view the span from starting dialysis to his death at 67. Some saw it as dying young, while others argued that living this long after starting dialysis was actually a long life — and reactions were similarly divided over Duncan’s description of a death after a long illness as “too soon.”

  • Ano’s Slender Legs Steal the Show in Mini-Skirt Outfit — “Devastating,” “Legs Go on Forever,” “Peak Visuals”

On September 6, artist Ano posted photos on Instagram wearing a mini-skirt outfit. The caption read “Outfit is Aiban-Sai style,” and the post drew attention for the legs extending from the white, black-lace-and-red-frill costume. On 5ch’s Geino Sokuho+ (entertainment/sports news) thread, praise poured in with comments like “devastating” and “her legs go on forever.” At the same time, the thread mixed compliments with teasing — speculation about plastic surgery, age-conscious remarks like “still doing this past 30,” and posts expressing surprise at how built she is.

    Tue, Sep 8, 4:40 PM

Artist Ano updated her Instagram on September 6, posting photos in a mini-skirt outfit that have since become a hot topic.

Ano captioned the photos “Outfit is Aiban-Sai style.” The white-based mini-skirt costume, trimmed with black lace and red frills, put her long, slender legs on full display.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Ano has worked as an actress and singer since her teens, and in recent years has become a popular fixture on variety shows as well. In this thread, most comments were positive, praising her “long legs” and “great figure,” though there was also speculation about possible plastic surgery and remarks tied to her age. It’s worth noting that any talk of plastic surgery is not something Ano herself has confirmed — it remains pure speculation from an anonymous message board. This pattern, where a social media post reignites chatter about a celebrity’s figure and physique, is a recurring phenomenon that goes well beyond Ano alone.

  • Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa Prize Scandal: Users Furious After Getting Banned for Reporting Scalpers on Mercari

The “Chiikawa” collab prizes (figures, can badges, etc.) that Kura Sushi had been rolling out since August 21 were found listed on Mercari even before the collab started, revealing that an employee had embezzled and leaked the prizes. Kura Sushi has gone so far as to consult the police over the matter. Amid this, 5channelers’ anger has also turned toward Mercari, the platform where the resold items are being offloaded. Especially prominent were comments like “I reported the illegal listings multiple times, and instead my own account got suspended” — sparking debate over just how much responsibility the platform itself should bear.

Popular conveyor-belt sushi chain Kura Sushi abruptly announced the cancellation of its hugely popular “Chiikawa” collaboration campaign. The reason: internal misconduct — prizes embezzled and leaked by an employee. As the matter escalates to the point where Kura Sushi is consulting the police, the anger of Chiikawa fans and ordinary consumers — who are themselves the victims here — is now being directed at flea-market apps like “Mercari.”

The collab campaign launched on August 21. As prizes for the “Bikkura Pon!” capsule lottery (won by feeding in your finished plates), five types of Chiikawa figures, eight types of can badges, and eight types of acrylic magnets were prepared.

◼ Listed before the Chiikawa collab even started → sold out

Current law could already punish this, but it's tough when prosecutors are incompetent.
Claiming they "couldn't have known" it was stolen/embezzled goods being resold, after receiving reports multiple times, is pretty rich.
On top of the reports, the tea cups (yunomi) were listed before the distribution date even started — saying they "didn't know" doesn't hold up by any common-sense standard.

The content: any item a manufacturer designates as resale-prohibited stays banned from resale for a set period (say, 1 to 5 years). Sellers and buyers who violate it face penalties.

That alone would be enough to stop scalping.

    Supply and demand.
    When demand>>>supply, the price skyrockets.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

When it comes to flea-market apps, how far the operator should go in identifying and removing listings of stolen or fraudulently obtained goods has long been a recurring debate, and this incident followed the same pattern. Where opinions on the thread split was over where responsibility lies: some argued that “since Mercari is providing the platform where stolen goods are traded, they can’t claim to have nothing to do with it,” while others took a more limited view of the operator’s responsibility, comparing it to “blaming the bullet train for not checking passengers’ luggage” — so it wasn’t a simple case of one side being clearly in the right. One point readers might easily misread is the assumption that “reporting will get illegal listings taken down right away” — but according to accounts on the thread, the opposite happened in some cases, with the reporting user’s own account getting suspended instead, and the platform’s actual screening standards and how it handles reports remain largely opaque from the outside. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the prize leak itself originated from internal misconduct by a Kura Sushi employee — serious enough that Kura Sushi consulted the police — and this was not an incident in which Mercari was directly involved.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5channel (News Speed+) thread ““I reported it so many times” / “Total liars” — Users direct their anger at Mercari over Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa scalping scandal and its “slow response”.”

  • Aoi Yamazaki Reveals Juice=Juice’s Budokan Show Sparked the Idea for “Moremi”

Singer-songwriter Aoi Yamazaki revealed in an interview with Nikkei Entertainment that after watching Juice=Juice’s Budokan concert, she felt “fire suits Juice=Juice — I want flames in my songs for them too,” and that feeling became the spark for writing “Moremi” (a title that plays on “do-re-mi”). When the story spread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, discussion turned to the fact that the song’s live performances actually do feature flame effects, and to a possible link with the fire staging used for “Fiesta! Fiesta!” at the TRIANGROOOVE2 Budokan concert. The conversation also expanded to the group’s ties with other songwriters like Ameko Kodama.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Aoi Yamazaki is a singer-songwriter who has written Juice=Juice songs including “Moremi,” while Ameko Kodama is another writer who has contributed multiple songs to the group. In the thread, discussion centered on the origin of “Moremi”‘s fire staging — while one theory credits the TRIANGROOOVE2 Budokan concert as the trigger, some pointed out that fire effects had actually already been used at Yuka Miyazaki’s graduation concert, cautioning against a tendency to retroactively construct a tidy narrative. Concern was also raised about copyright issues after the Nikkei Entertainment article’s content was reposted directly into the thread, offering a rare glimpse into the usually invisible tension around how magazine reporting circulates within fan communities.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Aoi Yamazaki: “After watching Juice=Juice’s Budokan concert, I thought ‘fire suits Juice=Juice, I want flames raised for my songs too,’ and that’s how I wrote ‘Moremi’”.

By the time Arisawa's promotion was decided, Kasahara — who's the same age — already had her graduation set.

Hana Kojima is the same age as Arisawa and Ishiyama,
so I was surprised this age group might still be growing.

Kasahara and Ota left, and Kitagawa landed a big transfer over to TV Tokyo, so three left and one new member joined.

By the time Ishiyama got promoted, she'd already graduated high school — if she hadn't been promoted at that point, I think she'd have ended up like Kono, Makinoe, Asano, Miyakoshi, and the others.

Cover-song hell plus the addition of 'old' trainees Arisawa and Ishiyama —
I remember thinking Juice=Juice was done for.

Yeah, people were calling it the 'trash can.'
    48AnonymousSep 8, 2026 15:55
I feel like Kanazawa and Yokoyama said something similar too — becoming trainees in high school while everyone around them was elementary/middle schoolers.

Yagi is from this generation too, so that's 4 who've left.

Wow, Pinopa (nickname) got incredibly cute.

Didn't it bother her being by far the youngest among peers like Matsumoto and Yokaze?

Probably just because the cake is small.
    61AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:22
    She's a kid and isn't wearing makeup, that's why.
    62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:28
Hiromoto, who's the same age as those two but became a trainee a year earlier, probably felt the same way.
    63AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:32
Glad she cried and didn't want to, but kept going with JJ (Juice=Juice) anyway.
    66AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:52
They hit it off and got close fast,
but honestly those two were probably the only ones their age to begin with.

    Re: #66
Hiromoto was around at the same time too, so even as a trio they got along well.
    67AnonymousSep 8, 2026 16:52
Is that why things got weird?

Kojima got the chance to sing 'Moré! Mi' at the Momoiro Uta Gassen,
and she already had ties to Miyamoto — that's exactly why she ended up in Hello! Project.
I doubt there are many people who'd get such a convenient second-career shot at joining Hello! Project.

Background and key points of this discussion

A defining feature of Hello! Project’s trainee (kenshuusei) system is that seniority is determined by join date rather than age — a setup sometimes compared to a sumo stable. As a result, most members join while still in middle school, making a join age of 16 the exception commenters pointed it out to be. Some in the thread credited Ishiyama and Arisawa’s arrival with supporting Juice=Juice’s generational turnover, while other exchanges hint there was skepticism about them early on. In recent years, mid-career joins at 22 have also appeared, and the fact that entry into training is no longer strictly tied to age stands out as a shift from the traditional image of a trainee. Note that some posts in the thread mocking certain members’ looks or necessity have been left out of this article.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Sakura Ishiyama: “Ichika Arisawa and I were in the same trainee class — we were both already 16, which is quite old, when we joined as Hello! Pro trainees. Everyone around us was in elementary or middle school…”“.
