  • Kyoto Prefecture Employee (62) Suspended for Stealing Sanitary Pads from Women’s Restroom — 5ch: ‘Why Are Men So Creepy?’

Kyoto Prefecture announced on the 8th that it has disciplined a male deputy chief (62) from an agency under the Nantan Regional Development Bureau with a three-month suspension, after he repeatedly broke into the women’s restroom at his workplace and took used sanitary pads. The man resigned that same day. The case came to light separately from the incident itself: during a police stop in a shopping-facility parking lot in Osaka Prefecture, officers found used sanitary pads in a bag inside his car, and he admitted to having taken them from the restroom at his workplace. On 5ch, the thread saw a range of reactions over the severity of the punishment, how his retirement pay would be handled, and his motive.

Background and key points of this story

Disciplinary action for Japanese local government employees comes in four tiers — reprimand, pay cut, suspension, and dismissal. Suspension is on the severe end but stops short of dismissal, so retirement benefits are handled differently than under a disciplinary or forced dismissal, and in some cases are still paid out close to in full. Comments on the thread like “suspend him and he still rakes in full retirement pay” reflect an understanding of this system. It’s also easy to miss that the case wasn’t uncovered because of the pad theft itself — it came to light through an unrelated police stop in Osaka Prefecture, where the items happened to turn up among his belongings in the car. Reactions on the thread split between those saying “he’s not really hurting anyone” and those who viewed repeatedly breaking into a workplace restroom to steal items as theft and a privacy violation in its own right.

  • Chiikawa Movie Box Office Hits ¥14 Billion — 5ch Gaming Board Buzzes Over ‘Beating Mario’

A tally posted on X reported that box office revenue for the movie “Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island” had reached an estimated ¥14.053 billion as of its 47th day in theaters, and on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the figure sparked discussion for apparently surpassing the first Mario movie. The thread buzzed with talk of Chiikawa’s broad audience appeal and whether other Nintendo-adjacent characters (like Kirby) could compete, while old posts showing that Chiikawa’s creator, Nagano, is a fan of Nintendo and Pokémon were also dug up, drawing reactions from an angle unrelated to the box office comparison itself. Opinions were also divided over the quality of the Mario movie itself.

    Background and Talking Points

“Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island” is a theatrical anime based on the popular “Chiikawa” IP, with box office reported to have reached roughly ¥14 billion as of its 47th day in theaters. The “Mario” movie brought up for comparison in the thread is a Nintendo-based CG animated film that was a massive hit both in Japan and abroad, but the posts mix domestic and worldwide figures, as well as yen and dollar amounts, without laying them out in a directly comparable way — worth keeping in mind when reading. It also became a talking point that Chiikawa’s creator, Nagano, had previously posted a lot of Nintendo- and Pokémon-related fan art, but this is based solely on Nagano’s own public social media posts and doesn’t indicate any official relationship with those companies. On the Geha board, fans sparring over box office numbers for their favorite franchises is a familiar routine, but this time the discussion also took off from the angle of the creator’s personal interests.

  • PISA 2025: Japan’s High School Freshmen Rank World-Class, But the Gap at Home Widens — 5ch Says ‘Reading Skills Come Down to How Much You Read as a Kid’

In the 2025 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) results released by the OECD on the 8th, Japan’s first-year high schoolers maintained world-class standing in science, reading, and mathematics — ranking first among OECD member countries in all three fields for the first time since the survey began. At the same time, the share of students in the lowest proficiency tier has been growing domestically: in reading, the bottom tier rose from 13.8% to 18.6%, and average scores fell across all three fields. On 5ch, a thread debating how to interpret this ‘widening domestic gap’ saw opinions split over the link between reading habits and comprehension skills, and over whether math and science should be dropped as required subjects.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released the results on the 8th of the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), administered to 15-year-olds across 91 countries and regions. Japan, represented by first-year high school students, maintained top-tier standing in all three fields — science, reading, and mathematics. Domestically, however, the share of students in the lowest proficiency tier increased. There was little change among top scorers, meaning the achievement gap widened. Average scores declined in all three fields, with the drop in reading comprehension particularly notable.

The three fields tested were scientific literacy, reading comprehension, and mathematical literacy. Japan’s science ranking fell from 2nd in the previous 2022 survey to 5th, reading dropped from 3rd to 4th, and math stayed at 5th, unchanged from last time. Because average scores fell across the board internationally, Japan actually ranked 1st in all three fields among the 38 OECD member countries — the first time this has happened since the survey began in 2000.

Breaking scores down by proficiency level, Japan saw the share of students at the lowest tier, “Level 1 or below,” expand in all three fields. The largest increase was in reading, up from 13.8% to 18.6%, followed by math (12.0% to 16.1%) and science (8.0% to 11.3%). The top tier, “Level 5 or above,” saw only a 0.8- to 1.1-point decline, not a statistically significant difference.

Japanese people can't actually debate, can they?
What Japanese people call "debate" is really just debate cosplay —
    just another form of play.
Most Japanese have no idea how to have a proper debate,
because nobody ever taught them how, not in school, not in society.

Sophistry and logical fallacies get used in discussions all the time,
but the other side barely even notices,
because they don't know enough about fallacies to call them out.

If this stayed confined to childhood or the classroom, it'd be one thing,
but it happens routinely in government, among lawmakers, in academia, even in the courts.
    Japan is done for.

First, Japanese people need to actually learn how to debate.
A bunch of idiots arguing with each other isn't a debate at all.

AI has gotten to the point where it can read between the lines and anticipate what you need, but

you can clearly see that if you don't constantly check what it's "thinking" and correct its misunderstandings or wrong turns,
it never reaches a real conclusion.

Reading the "Thinking…" status text as it works and feeding it real-time follow-up instructions

My book-loving older sister, best friend, and cousin felt like aliens to me.
But my homeroom teacher praised my Japanese-language ability even more than my math, where I kept getting perfect scores —
and sure enough, book reports and essays I dashed off with barely any effort won top prizes, and my writing got published here and there.

What made the difference, I wonder?
Maybe it's because my dad used to read to me a lot,
or maybe it's because my mom listened to nothing but rakugo (traditional Japanese comic storytelling) while she was pregnant with me lol.
I barely talked as a kindergartner — even though I could actually do addition and subtraction —

Exam techniques were still immature back then, and there were tons of needlessly tricky, obscure questions meant to weed people out —

These days the questions are more straightforward, but the passages have gotten longer, so you just need a bit more reading ability now, that's all.

Nanyang Technological University — world rank 12th-26th, Asia rank 3rd.

University of Tokyo — world rank 26th, Asia rank 4th.

Everyone wrote Singapore off as a tiny country, and look — it's overtaken us, while Japan's been busy running its idiotic "everyone holds hands and crosses the finish line together" style of education.

    Background and Key Points

This round of PISA 2025 involved 91 countries and regions, and Japan ranked first among OECD members in all three fields for the first time — but that’s an easy point to misread, since it’s a relative ranking achieved while average scores fell almost everywhere, and Japan’s own average scores dropped in all three fields as well. In reading in particular, the bottom tier (Level 1 or below) surged from 13.8% to 18.6%, while the top tier stayed roughly flat, meaning what’s really happening looks more like “polarization” than an overall decline. The thread debated the causes of the drop — whether math and science should remain required subjects, how much reading kids do growing up, the practical need to read government documents at work — but these were all personal anecdotes, and no survey data backing up any particular cause appeared in the thread. Some posts also drifted into political point-scoring and comparisons with other countries, but since that isn’t directly related to the actual survey results, it’s been left out of this article.

  • Giants’ 3-Game Win Streak Snapped in Shutout Loss to Dragons, Fall 3 Games Behind League-Leading Tigers

On September 8, 2026, the Yomiuri Giants were shut out 0-3 by the Chunichi Dragons at Tokyo Dome. Starting pitcher Togo Shosei turned in a strong outing, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings, but since those runs scored following an error by Ishizuka, they were officially recorded as unearned. The loss snapped the Giants’ three-game winning streak and widened their gap behind the league-leading Hanshin Tigers to three games. On the forum, questions of “why was it zero earned runs?” sparked a thread explaining the earned-run rule, while fans also buzzed over other highlights of the game, including an inside-the-park grand slam.

Once the defense has already had 3 chances to record an out in an inning, any further runs allowed aren't charged as earned. For example: with no outs, an infielder boots a routine grounder, letting the batter reach base instead of being retired. If the defense then actually records two outs on the following batters, it's treated as if the defense had gotten 3 outs total (i.e., the inning would have ended without the error). Any runs the offense scores after that point aren't counted as earned runs against the pitcher.

There's still plenty of Carp games left, yo!

    Background and Key Talking Points

Earned runs are calculated under a rule that strips out runs scored in situations where the defense, had it converted the outs it should have gotten, would have already ended the inning. The three runs Togo allowed were tied to an error by Ishizuka — since the inning would have progressed further without the miscue, those runs were ruled unearned even though he still took the loss. Because that stat doesn’t feed into ERA, the mismatch between the pitcher’s win-loss record and his earned-run total left some posters confused, touching off a string of replies explaining the rule. With the defeat, the Giants’ winning streak ended at three games, and they now sit three games behind the league-leading Tigers in the Central League. Coming this late in the season, with the pennant race hanging in the balance, it was a game where the defensive lapse proved especially costly.

  • Horiemon Defends Tomomi Itano’s ‘Changing Room’ Post — Hotel’s Denial Fuels the Fire

The backlash over a post by Tomomi Itano showing photos taken in a hotel changing room took a fresh turn when entrepreneur Takafumi Horie weighed in with defending remarks like “What’s wrong with that?” and “Just poor people’s jealousy.” Shortly after, the hotel denied ever granting permission for the photos, leading many to say his defense had missed the point entirely. On 5ch threads, opinions split less over the substance of his defense and more over Horie’s way of putting things, with many posts likening it to his long-running habit of taking contrarian stances.

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie, known as “Horiemon,” is stirring controversy after fully defending former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano amid her ongoing backlash.

“He brushed off criticism of Itano’s everyday posts as ‘poor people’s jealousy,’ and on the controversial hotel changing-room photos, simply said, ‘What’s wrong with that?’ It’s classic blunt, assertive Horie — but this time it’s stirring up fresh controversy of its own” (entertainment reporter).

Background and Key Points of This Story

It’s easy to overlook that the Itano controversy started with her own social media post, and shifted from a simple pro/con debate into a separate dispute with the venue once the hotel denied ever granting permission to film. Some in the thread pointed out that Horie’s remarks are just a personal opinion, and that him saying “what’s wrong with that?” carries no real weight over the actual facts of whether filming was authorized. Opinions in the thread split less over whether the defense itself was justified, and more over how to judge his dismissive “poor people’s jealousy” framing — some read it as consistent with Horie’s long history of contrarian remarks, while others saw it as simply stoking conflict for its own sake. It’s a textbook case of a celebrity-defending comment ending up shaping perceptions of the defender more than the person being defended.

Morinaga Milk is still hanging in there —
though whether that counts as "food poisoning" is its own can of worms.

Background and key points of this story

Komeo is a former fighter turned restaurant owner, known for numerous appearances in “BreakingDown,” and this food poisoning incident occurred at a highly public event — a summer festival in Minato Ward. His claim that the footage of him tasting sauce with his finger was filmed at a separate “umi no ie” (beach hut) event rather than the Azabu Juban Summer Festival where the poisoning actually occurred is meant to separate the viral footage from the cause of the outbreak, and the thread was split over whether that distinction holds up. The specific cause of the food poisoning has not yet been made public, and the contents of the “rules” he says will be put in writing have also yet to be revealed. Given his past food-related controversies, readers are divided over whether this apology and policy statement will actually prevent a repeat, and whether customers will come back once the business resumes.

A thread titled “Chiikawa — what’s even good about it?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha) and pulled in over 40 replies. The discussion ranged widely — from claims that the creator is a woman, to similarities with Sanrio’s Kitty and Kanahei’s characters, to debate over adults enjoying character merch. What stood out most was the observation that “the art style is cute, but underneath it’s a brutal, FromSoftware-style world,” with reply after reply arguing that this gap between cuteness and brutality is exactly Chiikawa’s appeal.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Chiikawa began as a character illustrator Nagano posted on social media, and went on to become a nationwide hit through an anime adaptation and merchandise. In the thread, opinions were split over whether it runs in a Kodansha or Shogakukan publication — a mix-up likely rooted in the fact that it started as SNS content before being collected into print volumes. The creator’s gender has also never been officially confirmed; the only basis offered in the thread was speculation drawn from an old photo of the creator giving a talk, not hard fact. The most frequently cited reason for the series’ popularity was “the gap between the cute art style and its brutal setting,” with many commenters comparing it to FromSoftware games or Monster Hunter. Meanwhile, the thread also branched off into a separate debate over whether it’s appropriate for adults to enjoy character merchandise.

  • New Allegations Surface Over Tomomi Itano’s ‘Changing-Room Vlog’ — 5ch: ‘At This Point, Isn’t This Just a Fetish?’

Tomomi Itano (35), a former member of AKB48, is facing backlash over a family vacation vlog she posted on YouTube on September 3. The video appears to include footage shot in what looks like the changing room of the luxury hotel ‘The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko,’ and the hotel’s explanation has since shifted more than once. Reports have also surfaced alleging that similar filming took place last year as well. On 5ch, commenters questioned whether the hotel actually has the authority or contractual grounds to grant ‘special permission’ to film in a changing room, while others questioned the very mindset of filming and posting even a family trip — with much of the discussion waiting to hear Itano’s side of the story.

    9/8 (Tue) 18:40

So this wasn’t the first time after all. Former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano (35) is in the middle of a firestorm over ‘changing-room footage’ at a luxury hotel — and the controversy has now brought a new allegation to light.

It all started with a video posted to Itano’s YouTube channel on September 3, titled ‘[Summer Vacation] A Family Trip to Nikko for the First Time in a While, Just the Three of Us [Vlog].’

    21AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:00
Can a hotel really just unilaterally grant 'special permission' to film in a changing room?
If it were a private rental or filming after regular hours, sure, maybe —
but does the Ritz-Carlton actually have the right to sign away guests' privacy over their own nudity?
Does their terms of service really say something like 'privacy rights during your stay belong to the hotel'?
Whether a contract like that could even be valid is exactly the problem here.
    29AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:12
Why bother filming in the changing room of all places?

    49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:35

If that's the case, then the real problem is the hotel's security letting someone into the bath after hours in the first place.

    Re: #81
You're overestimating how famous Itano actually is —
most people don't even know who she is.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

At the heart of this controversy is the fact that the hotel’s explanation has shifted more than once. It was initially said that ‘special permission’ had been granted, but a later, additional explanation claimed the filming happened ‘after business hours.’ On 5ch, many pointed out the apparent contradiction between that explanation and the statement that ‘even after hours, changing-room filming is barred as part of a tightened policy.’ Some posts in the thread called for clarity on the legal basis for how far a hotel can even go in authorizing filming that touches on other guests’ privacy in shared facilities, but no clear answer has emerged. Additionally, the claim that ‘similar allegations arose last year as well’ comes from part of the original reporting — the thread itself doesn’t get into the details of what happened back then or how it was handled, so whether this is a genuine pattern will have to wait for further reporting.

  • Japan’s Cultural Affairs Agency to Database Manga Dialogue — Building a ‘Corpus’ to Track How Japanese Is Changing

Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs will begin building a “Manga Corpus” next fiscal year — a database cataloging the wide range of expressions found in manga dialogue, from guttural yells like “a゙” to greetings like “n-cha” and battle cries like “Total Concentration.” Working with a contractor chosen through open bidding, the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics plans to spend four years digitizing 50 years’ worth of material, covering the top 20 best-selling manga titles published each year from 1976 to 2025. It’s reportedly the first time the government has built a corpus based on manga. On 5channel, reactions were mixed: many users nostalgically traded favorite lines and sound effects from old manga, while others questioned whether the project was necessary or worth the tax money.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs is launching a “Manga Corpus” project to database the language used in manga dialogue. It will gather a wide variety of expressions — things like “a゙” and “n-cha” — to serve as basic data for research into how the Japanese language is changing. This marks the first time the government has built a corpus based on manga. The agency aims to digitize 50 years’ worth of material over the next four years, starting next fiscal year.

As a project commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics will develop the corpus together with a contractor selected through open bidding. It will cover the top 20 best-selling manga titles published each year from 1976 to 2025. The first year will focus on digitizing works from 2016 to 2025.

    Background and Talking Points

A corpus is a database that compiles large volumes of text to analyze how language changes over time, and the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics has previously built written-language corpora based on newspapers and novels. This new “Manga Corpus” extends that approach to manga dialogue, with plans to digitize the top 20 best-selling titles from each year between 1976 and 2025 — 50 years’ worth of material — over a four-year period. In the thread, plenty of comments nostalgically debated whether sound effects like “a゙” and “e゙” actually appear in real manga, while the unfamiliar term “corpus” itself seemed to draw more skepticism about tax spending than discussion of the project’s actual substance. Worth noting: this is the first time the government has built a corpus based on manga, and unlike a glossary-style site such as Niconico Pedia, the project’s purpose is to produce foundational data for academic research into the Japanese language.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Tsubaki Factory is an idol group under the Hello! Project umbrella, and the October 26 concert at Nippon Budokan marks member Mao Akiyama’s graduation show, “Final ‘Hanaoto’.” The rehearsal footage and promotional video that sparked discussion on the thread appear to be part of the buildup to this concert. Reactions to the word “break” were split — some enjoyed it purely for the funny facial expressions, while others voiced discomfort at what they saw as buzz-chasing staging, or worry that drew comparisons to sister group Angerme’s past image overhaul. Opinions also diverged on the origin of the phrase “anything short of death is just a scratch,” with some crediting a bestselling book and others crediting comedians like Sanma Akashiya or Degawa, leaving the true source unresolved as the conversation moved on.
