  • M!LK’s Hayato Sano Flashes a Big Smile at an Older Male Fan — 5ch: “Treat Female Fans Any Different and You’ll Get Roasted”

A post about M!LK’s Hayato Sano greeting an older male fan with a huge smile at a two-shot photo session held to celebrate the release of the new single “LOVE ENG!NE” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The fan reportedly hadn’t won a slot himself and ended up attending as a stand-in at his wife’s request. Commenters noted that many photos of young female fans taken at the same event showed a more restrained expression, pointing to an industry-specific dynamic where “idols get slammed if they treat female fans even slightly differently.” This sparked a stream of past examples from other groups — like Johnny’s talent and Dream5 — where idols reportedly let their guard down and showed more genuine expressions around male fans or staff. The thread also touched on opinions both for and against the whole business model of paid meet-and-greet events, and on the fairness of treating fans differently based on gender.

It's the same as a female idol being happy when female fans show up to support her.

Johnny's idols get happy when guys show up too, and Matsuoka from SOPHIA gets super excited about it as well.

I don't quite get the situation.
I figured maybe this guy applied on someone else's behalf, then found out only the actual applicant could attend, so he ended up going and taking the photo himself.
But if that's what happened, this line is confusing:

    >"I begged him for hours saying he wasn't going to win anyway so just go, but he wouldn't budge — so I played my once-in-a-lifetime favor card and got him to go." ❣

You're being way too generous with that read.
It could just as easily look like he's not even into it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cheki (instant photo) sessions and two-shot meet-and-greets are a bonus-incentive sales scheme deeply embedded in Japan’s idol industry, directly tied to boosting CD and DVD sales — and commenters on the thread pointed out exactly that, calling it “doping sales figures through meet-and-greets.” Because so many of these photos end up posted on social media, any visible difference in how an idol treats different fans is easily read as favoritism, so many idols reportedly try to keep the same expression and demeanor with everyone. In this case, the reaction to a normally low-profile male fan — and someone attending as a stand-in, no less — happened to spread on social media, and was largely received positively as “fair” and “professional.” At the same time, some pushed back, saying his expression looked stiff and like he wasn’t really into it. It’s worth keeping in mind that this whole discussion grew out of a single social media post, and it’s unclear whether this reflects how he normally interacts with fans.

  • Ex-Unification Church Recruiters Hid Behind Movie Clubs — A Former Member Turned Pastor Explains Their Tactics

The Fukushima Minpo reports that Pastor Itaru Takesako of Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture — himself a former member of the Unification Church — has spent over 30 years helping people leave the group. Commenters on the thread pointed to specific recruitment tactics, such as disguising outreach as everyday activities like movie clubs or tennis circles, and posing as a volunteer group to make contact after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Some pushed back, arguing that “the Unification Church’s problems are exaggerated,” while others accused critics of applying a political slant — leaving the thread split over where exactly the line between a cult and a religion should be drawn.

[Dependency & Cults #1] Mind Control: Unwitting Recruits Enter Through a Movie Club | Fukushima Minpo Digital

Pastor Itaru Takesako (59) of the Shirakawa Church, part of the United Church of Christ in Japan, in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, has spent more than 30 years working with members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (the former Unification Church), helping them leave the group.

In fact, Takesako himself is a former member who left the Unification Church.

Once you start saying that, every otaku fandom counts as a cult too.
Well… can't really argue with that.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Unification Church was ordered dissolved in 2023, but its practice of recruiting through disguised university clubs and volunteer groups has been pointed out for years — this article revisits that reality through a former member’s testimony. Where the thread split was over how “unusual” these tactics really are, with some commenters accusing critics of the recruitment methods of applying a political slant. One point readers may easily misunderstand is that the line between a religion and a cult isn’t clearly defined by law — it’s judged by a combination of factors like how closed off a group is and how aggressively it demands money — so the comments in this thread alone don’t establish its formal legal status.

  • Unlawful Welfare Benefit Cuts Ruled Illegal by Supreme Court — Fears Payments Won’t Reach 1.36 Million Households

After the Supreme Court ruled that past cuts to welfare benefit standards were “illegal,” the government plans to set aside 105.5 billion yen in this fiscal year’s supplementary budget for additional payments. The payments are expected to cover roughly 3 million households in total, with a payout of around 200 billion yen overall — but there are concerns that 1.36 million households whose addresses or circumstances have since changed may never see the money. On 5ch, discussion focused less on the additional payments themselves and more on the welfare system as a whole: its merits, the rising number of elderly recipients, and comparisons with minimum wage, with opinions sharply divided.

Roughly 3 million households are eligible for the additional payments — about 136 of them reportedly already “self-sufficient”?

As mentioned above, following the government’s court defeat, 105.5 billion yen has been written into this fiscal year’s supplementary budget to make additional payments to past welfare recipients, with the total expected to reach roughly 200 billion yen.

However, the objective basis for these figures has never been disclosed — in practice, only the administrative paperwork is being pushed forward.

Welfare payments are way too generous compared to minimum-wage take-home pay after deductions. Push minimum wage up too far and small and mid-size businesses go under, so the only real option is to cut welfare. Basically turn it into a universal basic income — or just restrict what welfare money can buy, using My Number card payments to limit purchases.

The Minimum Wage Act literally requires consistency with welfare policy. If welfare payments are adjusting to inflation and minimum wage isn't keeping up at all, take it up with the government, or tell your company to raise your pay lol

    Minimum Wage Act

    (Principle of Regional Minimum Wages)
Article 9: To guarantee a minimum wage floor for low-paid workers, regional minimum wages (meaning the minimum wage set for each region) shall be determined for every region across the country without exception.

    2. Regional minimum wages shall be set with consideration for workers' cost of living and wages in the region, as well as the ordinary wage-paying capacity of local businesses.

    3. In considering workers' cost of living under the preceding paragraph, due regard shall be given to maintaining consistency with welfare policy, so that workers can maintain a healthy and culturally minimal standard of living.

Even for a natural disaster, if you get sued afterward, that's extra legal costs and time. Even ordinary company employees are told by their employer to leave promptly once work is done, because if someone gets hurt on the premises it becomes a workers' comp case, and even a sudden illness creates a duty to help. If every member of a household is hospitalized, housing assistance gets cut for that period. But rent is still rent whether you're hospitalized or not, so that's a strange rule.

    Re: #131-132
Since monthly rent still applies even while hospitalized, I guess it is rough in that sense…

So you can't really say medical assistance just cancels out livelihood assistance plus housing assistance. Taxpaying households spend about 400,000 yen per person a year on medical costs, versus over 1,000,000 yen per "head" (using the animal counter "匹" — a dehumanizing dig at recipients) for welfare households — how you weigh that is the real question. It's the demographic that can't survive without being pumped full of hospital visits and medication…

    Re: #149
Well, 60% of welfare recipients are dealing with illness, injury, or disability. And 55% of current recipients are elderly, and even the healthy ones among them are basically pre-illness cases. For old folks it's not about a cure, just ongoing symptom management, so treatment drags on for years.

And protecting everyone like that no matter what is exactly how you end up here. If you're going to say "protect them even more," you'd better be on board with raising taxes too, right?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This additional payment is an after-the-fact remedy following the Supreme Court’s ruling that the procedure used to cut livelihood assistance standards since 2013 was illegal, in a class-action suit over those cuts. The payments are said to cover roughly 3 million households in total, but among the original recipients, 1.36 million households can no longer be tracked or confirmed as eligible — due to relocation, death, or having left the welfare system since then — meaning whether the money actually reaches them depends on local government records. What divided the thread wasn’t the payment itself so much as the welfare system as a whole: the rising share of elderly recipients, comparisons with minimum wage, moral-hazard arguments, and on the flip side, criticism of practical shortcomings in medical and housing assistance. Meanwhile, the article itself also notes that the funding rationale behind the additional payment figures has never been clearly explained, so their appropriateness is still an open question.

I don't think he'd be easy to notice either
You honestly can't usually tell with celebrities out in public
People don't stare hard at faces anyway

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s not unheard of for celebrities to go unrecognized while walking around bare-faced, and this thread split over the reasons why. Three main theories emerged: the “indifference theory” — that city dwellers just aren’t in the habit of studying strangers’ faces; the “plain-face theory” — that without makeup or stage lighting, he simply looks like “some guy you’d see anywhere”; and the “generational-shift theory” — that his longtime fans have aged, while recognition among younger people has faded. Others pointed out a contrast: celebrities with distinctive looks, like Yoshikazu Ebisu or Kazuo Umezu, get spotted instantly — suggesting “recognizability” hinges more on distinctive appearance than on fame itself. Some baseless speculation linking changes in his looks to cosmetic surgery or aging also surfaced, but since it couldn’t be verified, it’s been left out of the main text.

Background and key points of this story

“Detective! Knight Scoop” is a long-running variety show produced by Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that began airing in 1988. Keisuke Tachihara rose to popularity in the 1990s as one of the show’s marquee detectives, alongside Makoto Kitano and Naruki Nagahara. He also has a background with the Shiki Theatre Company, though the thread saw some conflicting claims about the details of his time there. It’s worth keeping in mind that this revelation comes solely from what Tachihara himself said on his own YouTube channel — the circumstances around his wife leaving and the specifics of his health issues go no further than his own account. On 5ch, comments speculating about his personal life, like “when the money’s gone, so is the relationship,” surfaced, but none of it has been verified. There was also disagreement over how to judge the show’s growing "Yoshimoto flavor," along with differing takes on it as a piece of Kansai local culture — highlighting how much impressions of the same show can vary by generation and region.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Egg freezing is a technology meant to guard against the age-related decline in fertility, and in recent years some local governments, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, have begun subsidizing testing and freezing costs for single women. However, it’s a common misconception that having frozen eggs guarantees a future pregnancy — survival and fertilization rates after thawing depend heavily on age and the number of eggs frozen. Reactions in the thread split into three camps: joking suggestions that she simply go find a husband, comments raising the real risks and medical caveats of egg freezing, and questions about her motives for revealing something so personal. The fact that Nakagawa is a recognizable former NHK announcer also fueled both the volume and the range of reactions.

    He backed out that fast?
What he lost over it was huge though.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Two separate incidents from different time periods came up in the thread as reasons Ishida got “sidelined”: eating out during the state of emergency in the COVID pandemic, and his 2016 announcement — later withdrawn — that he’d run for Tokyo governor. The show cancellations and penalty fees were mainly tied to the gubernatorial bid, and it’s reported that his wife, Riko Higashio, learned of his candidacy from the news without being consulted beforehand. Opinions in the thread were split over whether he actually had savings and over his choice of Funabashi as a location, with some posters reporting they’d actually seen him at the shop almost every day. The “reason he got sidelined” tends to get boiled down to a single incident, but it’s easy to overlook that it was really the result of multiple scandals piling up.

  • Streamer Daisuke Hori’s Broadcast Tops 100,000 Concurrent Viewers — But ‘Sleeping On Camera’ and ‘Padded Numbers’ Suspicions Swirl

Daisuke Hori’s ongoing endurance livestream became a hot topic after its concurrent viewer count topped 100,000. Comments questioning whether he’d dozed off piled up during the broadcast, with viewers debating “Is he really not sleeping?” and “Isn’t this bot activity — the viewer count swings look unnatural?” On the 5channel thread, reactions ranged from people simply enjoying the suspicions as a running joke, to dedicated haters throwing money at Super Chats just to keep investigating, all wrapped in wry commentary on how the stream’s numbers keep climbing precisely because of that controversy.

During his chat with Takasu he said something like, "On day one(?) I did strength training way more intense than usual, so I'm feeling a lot worse than normal." If it was that much harder than usual, I guess it's understandable if he dozed off…

Watching how the viewer count moves, it's behaving just like the typical bot pattern — suddenly jumping up by thousands or tens of thousands, then dropping by the exact same amount just as suddenly.
    117AnonymousSep 13, 2026 15:41
    Re: #112
Just now it dropped straight from over 30,000 to 20,000.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Daisuke Hori is known as a self-proclaimed short sleeper who claims to sleep only 30 minutes a day, and long-form endurance livestreams are the backbone of his content. This latest broadcast also posted a huge number, topping 100,000 concurrent viewers, but on platforms like YouTube, displayed concurrent-viewer counts can swing by the thousands or tens of thousands within a short span — and without an explanation from the platform itself, it’s impossible for outsiders to say for certain whether that reflects normal viewer turnover or deliberate manipulation. What split opinion on the thread wasn’t so much whether he really dozed off, but rather which group was ultimately driving the stream’s numbers up: those enjoying the suspicions as a running joke, or the haters throwing Super Chat money at pursuing the truth. Since even donations sent to criticize him still count as revenue, it’s worth noting that criticism and profit tend to become two sides of the same coin — a structural pattern common to this type of endurance livestream.

  • Famous AA Character “Exploding Bettor” Live-Blogs Horse Racing — 5ch’s Catchphrase: “Take It to Go”

On Sunday, September 13, when the Rose Stakes and the St Lite Kinen were run, the famous AA (ASCII-art) character “Exploding Bettor,” Mr. Chudoon, kicked off his regular horse-racing commentary thread on 5ch’s News VIP board. The thread’s signature move: whenever another regular AA character shows up, he brushes them off with his stock line “Take it to go,” all while keeping up a running commentary of his winning bets and his egg sandwich purchases. In Race 9 at Nakayama, his winning reports drew a round of congratulations, while in Race 10 at Hanshin his favorites came in 4th and 5th, narrowly missing a big payout — a day that saw wins and losses tangled together right to the end.

    Number 5 was…
Since my picks landed 4th and 5th, that's agonizingly close

    Background and context

The VIP board has a long-running culture of commentary threads built around a dedicated AA (ASCII-art) mascot character, and “Exploding Bettor” is one of them. When other regular AA characters show up and get turned away with “Take it to go,” that’s just a fixed running gag that keeps the thread’s camaraderie going — it’s not meant as a fight or a snub. On terminology: a “manbaken” (万馬券) refers to a winning bet that pays out over 10,000 yen, and the reaction to Hanshin Race 10 — “landing 4th and 5th makes it agonizingly close” — points to a heartbreak pattern unique to horse racing, where the horses you picked place well individually but the specific combination still misses. Worth noting: the thread as a whole isn’t promising any surefire betting method or guaranteed outcome — it’s simply a space for live commentary and casual chat. Also, an early post containing sexual content unrelated to the main topic appeared in the thread, but since it has no bearing on the thread’s theme or later developments, it has been left out of this article.

While some in the thread said it felt like “the momentum of Morning Musume’s golden age,” opinions were divided over who is actually cut out for variety TV, with members known by nicknames like “Ishiyama,” “Sakurachi,” and “Endo” all getting debated for their aptitude. Some pointed out that Angerme used to be seen as the group carrying the variety-show torch, making for a thread that captured how these roles shift between groups over time.

It's starting to feel like Morning Musume's golden age again…

This board (nicknamed "Ookami"/Wolf, the old name for the Hello!Project board) is basically made up of Juice=Juice otaku ("汁ヲタ" – a pun on 汁/"juice").

If you've got time for variety shows, get back to farm work.
    4AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:46
So it's finally Ishiyama's turn, huh?

I'd love to see Arisawa Ichika on Banana Sand, right? (a TV Tokyo variety show hosted by the comedy duo Bananaman)

You think she's actually suited for it?

Is "Ariyoshiiii" not happening yet? (a variety show hosted by comedian Hiroiki Ariyoshi)

    Re: #6
Ebata or Endo might be a better fit, maybe?
    7AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:11
Angerme used to be THE variety-show group, but now…

    Re: #7
She wasn't really on that much though.

Irie's gonna end up big on the world stage, I bet.

It's because leader Ise has that cynical, deadpan vibe…
    18AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:23
Guess I'll become an =LOVE otaku and lord it over Juice=Juice fans.
    26AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:24
    Relieved it's not Endo.
Ishiyama can switch into variety mode and she's a fun talker too.

    Such a persistent Endo hater.
    47AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:55
Endo's not really cut out for variety-show banter, is she?

Sakurachi did location work for Burando, and back then she seemed standoffish and a bit shaky, so it made sense she wasn't trusted with solo jobs – but I bet she's grown since.
There'll be other guests there too, and cooking's her strong suit, so hopefully she can hold her own talking.

Akaringo was great in that "Intern" thing,
so maybe put her on a slightly more serious show.
Everyone's got their own fit, right?

Sakurachi could be the successor to Mai Satoda – glamorous good looks but can pull off the ditzy-character act too.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Within Hello! Project, fans often discuss how variety-show roles get divided up among the different groups, and this thread was no exception – comments like “Angerme used to be the variety-show group” show how the leading members and groups have shifted over time. This time, Juice=Juice members are said to be getting more opportunities to appear on such shows, and fan opinion split over who’s best suited to the talk-show format. It’s worth noting, though, that no specific show names or confirmed appearances were given in the thread – this is discussion built on fan hopes and expectations rather than confirmed facts. The thread also leans on members’ nicknames and past location-shoot anecdotes, reflecting the kind of insider context familiar only to longtime fans, which may be hard to follow for first-time readers.
