  • Downtown Wednesday’s “Detective Tsuda” Getting a New Episode? 5ch: “Surely Part 5 Should Be the Last One”

Kentaro Fujii, the director behind TBS’s “Downtown Wednesday,” updated X by September 13, 2026 with a photo that happened to include a shooting schedule sheet. The sheet listed a broadcast slot for “Wednesday, January 27, 2027, 22:00–22:57,” and 5ch users who spotted it began speculating that it points to a new installment of the popular segment “Detective Tsuda.” The thread saw a wave of comments arguing the segment has grown stale and bloated in scale in recent years and that it’s time to end it, while others pushed back in its defense, leaving opinion split.

    September 13, 2026, 3:45 PM

Kentaro Fujii, the network’s well-known staffer who directs the TBS variety show “Downtown Wednesday” (10:00 PM slot), updated X by the 13th. His post, offering a glimpse of a shoot date, has become a talking point.

Fujii wrote, “A shoot far enough out that even a demon would clap and laugh” (a twist on the Japanese saying that talking about the distant future makes even a demon laugh), and shared a photo in which the shoot date was legible. The printed shoot schedule sheet read “September 12 (Saturday), TBS.” It further noted “Wednesday, January 27, 2027, 22:00–22:57.”

I feel like Tsuda and Ano-chan basically got famous because of Downtown Wednesday.
And M!LK too, maybe? TBS is really good at turning talent into stars.
Used to be Fuji TV back in the day (´・ω・`)

That's just Yoshimoto (their talent agency) pushing hard to make them famous.
Otherwise they'd be stuck as Kansai-local comedians — that hard push is baffling.

The fact that it only works when they blow up the scale shows it's actually a pain to produce.
They probably can't pull off a small-scale version anymore.

    Re: #6
They could just mix it up with different "XX arcs" instead — why does the scale keep inflating?

This probably wouldn't happen if Matsumoto were still around.
Ever since Matsumoto left, the little reaction-cam inset during the VTR clips has gotten really annoying.

For me it's Seiya and Hikorohee who are the annoying ones.
    56AnonymousSep 13, 2026 18:03
    Re: #46
Matsumoto's reaction cuts weren't funny either, but what really got on my nerves was the presenter-teasing before the VTR and those "I noticed that too" comments about irrelevant little details afterward.

Background and key points of this topic

“Detective Tsuda” is a popular Downtown Wednesday segment that has aired multiple times, putting talent Atsuhiro Tsuda into ambush-style situations to capture his reactions. Director Kentaro Fujii has repeatedly teased shoot dates and props on X to stir viewer speculation, and this latest post showing the “January 27, 2027” date is seen as more of the same. What split the thread was whether the segment itself is still worth doing: some argued the ever-inflating scale means a smaller-format version can no longer work and that it’s time to wrap things up after five installments, while others pushed back, essentially saying “just don’t watch it if you don’t like it.” Several commenters also noted that the atmosphere of the studio reaction shots has changed since headliner Hitoshi Matsumoto stopped appearing. Note that both the air date and the segment’s content remain speculation based on the leaked photo — there has been no official announcement from TBS or Fujii himself.

  • Where Will Hashisako Rin’s Fans Go Next? 5ch Hello!Project Board Buzzes With Oshi-Switch Predictions

A thread on 5ch’s Hello!Project board is debating where fans of Angerme’s Hashisako Rin will go next. The central question: how many will choose “oshi-sotsu” — quitting fandom altogether — versus switching their support to other Angerme members like Matsumoto, Tamenaga, or Kawana. Posters also pointed to past examples, like fans of former members such as Takeuchi, Sasaki, Jokoryo, and Kawamura drifting to Juice=Juice or Beyooooonds, floating the rule of thumb that female fans tend to move to other groups or drop out entirely, while male fans tend to keep supporting the group itself.

    1AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:41
Or is it "oshi-sotsu" (quitting fandom) for you?
    3AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:42
Wait, whose fans moved over to Hashisako in the first place?
    4AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:42
    Quitting for good.
    Rin-chan was my last oshi.
    6AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:44

    9AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:47
Starting fresh by watching over trainee Shii-chan is another option.
    11AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:47
Within Angerme, I'd guess Kero probably gets the biggest faction, but Hashisako's fans are mostly women who only stan one member, so most will likely just disappear entirely.
    12AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:48
I wanted to see Hashisako become leader and eat sushi.
    13AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:51
Fans drift downward in age, so nobody's moving to someone older than Hashisako.
Kawana and Tamenaga will probably vanish within two years too.
Hirayama's unlikely too, given her health issues and she's on the "retire after graduating college" track.
If it stays within Angerme, my bet's on Matsumoto, the frontrunner for next leader.
    14AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:52
Oden's fanbase (nickname for one member) isn't even that young — it's mainly guys in their 40s.

The fans who moved from Takeuchi were probably women.
Where the male fans came from is a mystery though.
    17AnonymousSep 13, 2026 14:57
Hashisako's fanbase is mostly the "worship Hashisako herself" type, so a lot of them will probably just quit being fans.

Beyooooonds is where female fans oddly increased.
Quite a few went from Sasaki to Hirai.
    42AnonymousSep 13, 2026 16:02
Middle-aged guy fans can settle into stanning the whole group.
Female fans are more likely to stick with stanning one individual.
    44AnonymousSep 13, 2026 16:03
I wonder how many moved from Angerme to Beyooooonds.
Beyooooonds is doing well lately, so it feels like even more will drift that way.

    46AnonymousSep 13, 2026 16:05
Seems like a fair number of Hashisako fans will drift to Beyooooonds.
Looking around, it doesn't feel like many are sticking with Angerme fandom.

I won't say none moved over, but not as many as you'd think.
I guess in the end it's just painful to keep watching a group after your oshi is gone.
    49AnonymousSep 13, 2026 16:08
Did Sasaki and Hirayama's fanbases even overlap in the first place? I had the impression both had a lot of "intense" fans though.
    50AnonymousSep 13, 2026 16:09
They do share the type who see their oshi as playing the "male role" (a common trope for fans, sometimes called "man-san" in net slang), but otherwise the fanbases don't seem to overlap.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Oshi-hen” (switching who you stan) and “oshi-sotsu” (quitting fandom) are terms that come up constantly in Hello!Project fan culture, and what happens to the fans left behind after a member graduates is a recurring topic. The rules of thumb raised in this thread — that “fans drift to younger members but not older ones” or that “male fans tend to support the whole group while female fans tend to stan individuals” — are folk wisdom based purely on individual observation, not on any official statistics or survey, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s also worth noting, as one poster pointed out about Kawamura — where an earlier “who will her fans switch to” thread predicted they “wouldn’t be able to leave the scene,” and that’s exactly what happened — that fans’ behavior after a graduation often continues far longer than they themselves expect. Nothing in the thread confirms Hashisako Rin’s own current activity status; this is all speculation based on how fans are processing the news.

  • 28 Officials Fall Ill with Food Poisoning at Kyoto Track Meet, Boxed Lunches Suspected

On September 12, during the All Japan Corporate Team Championships in athletics, held at Takebishi Stadium Kyoto in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, 28 event officials reported symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting and were taken to hospital. According to follow-up reports shared in the thread, 2 were in serious condition, 3 in moderate condition, and 23 in mild condition; athletes, coaches, and other team members who competed were not among those affected, since they had eaten boxed lunches they brought themselves. The thread focused on questions like why only the organizing staff ate heavy boxed lunches such as katsu-toji (pork cutlet simmered in egg), and how the food had been temperature-managed during storage, with posters trading various theories about the lunches’ contents and their relationship to the weather.

Komeo: "I want to raise hygiene awareness at every restaurant and food establishment"

Background and key points of this story

The All Japan Corporate Team Championships is a nationwide athletics event hosted by Japan’s corporate/industrial-league athletic federation, and athletes and coaches typically eat meals prepared by their own teams — likely why, in this case too, bringing their own boxed lunches kept them out of harm’s way. Those affected, meanwhile, were the staff supporting the event’s operations, and the boxed lunches provided to them are suspected as the cause. Opinion in the thread split between the view that “people have simply gotten weaker than they used to be” and the view that “this has always happened at some baseline rate — it’s just that testing and reporting have gotten better,” though both remain speculation. Whether food-poisoning cases are actually rising, or whether more cases are simply being caught, can’t be determined from this incident alone — that would require waiting on the health department’s findings on the causative agent and how the food was stored, a nuance easy to miss from the headline alone.

    Re: #90

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Parking lots attached to movie theaters in central Tokyo tend to have high base rates — even when the first 30 minutes are free, many charge a few hundred yen for every 10-15 minutes after that, so once you factor in the time spent moving to and from the theater and buying drinks, the total can easily run higher than expected. Commenters pointed out that she apparently didn’t know about the trick of getting free parking by spending a set amount at a department store, but plenty of others argued that parking rates in central Tokyo are simply absurd to begin with, so opinions were divided. It’s worth noting that the figure “entered at 9:05, exited at 11:38, 2 hours 3 minutes” comes from commenters’ own calculations — some pointed out the math seems off — and the exact total parking fee was never stated in the blog post itself.

  • Touch-Panel Ordering? Welcome. QR Codes and LINE Ordering? Not So Much — 5ch: “This Has No Sense of Boundaries”

Touch-panel ordering is spreading rapidly across restaurants in Japan, and opinions clashed over it on 5ch’s Breaking News+ board. According to the article, the system — in which customers order directly from a tabletop terminal that sends the order straight to the kitchen — has become common at izakayas and family restaurants in particular. On the thread, most posters welcomed the tabletop touch panels themselves, but there was persistent pushback against QR-code and LINE-based ordering that requires using one’s own smartphone, with complaints like “you walk in and immediately get pressured into adding the place as a LINE friend.” Opinions also split over hygiene, screen readability, and whether the systems are really just about cutting labor costs, exposing a gap between what works for restaurants and what actually feels convenient for customers.

    Yomiuri TV

Touch-panel ordering systems have been spreading rapidly through the restaurant industry lately. Adopted across a wide range of establishments, from izakayas to family restaurants, the system lets customers pick what they want to eat from a dedicated terminal at their table and send the order straight to the kitchen. While it offers the convenience of ordering without having to call over staff, it has also stirred up mixed reactions from the public.

There's a place that switched back from QR codes to staff taking orders.

Apparently once customers got drunk, entering QR codes became too much of a hassle and sales dropped — turns out a staff member asking "another round?" really does matter.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The spread of touch-panel ordering is rooted in the reality restaurants now face: with the minimum wage rising and labor shortages worsening, they can no longer staff as many floor workers as before. As the thread notes, some chains, like Hidakaya, pair reduced staffing with serving robots, while others, like Matsuya, run into practical issues — such as shorter customers struggling to see items displayed near the top of the touch panel. The main point of contention splits roughly along these lines: tabletop touch panels tend to be readily accepted, while QR-code and LINE-based ordering that requires customers to use their own phones draws strong psychological and practical resistance — complaints about being pressured into adding a LINE friend, or worries over data usage — leaving opinion divided. There’s also pushback against the claim that touch panels are unsanitary, with some arguing paper menus are actually cleaned far less often, revealing a gap between the perception and the reality of hygiene. And as with the example of a restaurant that switched back from QR-code ordering to staff taking orders, changes in ordering method can affect average spend per customer, making this more than just a matter of personal preference — it ties into real business decisions.

  • Hashimoto Toru’s Take on ‘Chiikawa’ Sparks Controversy — Commentator Scolds Him: “That’s Not Good”

Toru Hashimoto, appearing on Mainichi Broadcasting’s “Seyanen!”, sparked an awkward moment when he remarked on the hit character “Chiikawa,” saying, “What is this, anyway? Isn’t it a dog or a cat? What is it? On 5ch, opinions split between those defending him (“it’s just personal taste, Hashimoto didn’t do anything wrong”) and those who saw it as “just his usual contrarian act,” while plenty of others expressed sheer surprise that he didn’t even recognize such a massively popular character.

Toru Hashimoto, former governor of Osaka Prefecture and lawyer, appeared on Mainichi Broadcasting’s “Seyanen!” on the 12th, rattling the studio with “inflammatory remarks” about the massively popular character “Chiikawa.”

That day’s program covered the news that Kura Sushi had cancelled its collaboration with “Chiikawa.” Ahead of that segment, an image of “Chiikawa” was put up on the monitor, and host and announcer Kaka Yamazaki asked, “Do you know how this character originally got its start?”

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Chiikawa” is a character born from creator Nagano’s four-panel manga, and it grew into a massively popular property through an anime adaptation and collaborations with restaurant chains like Kura Sushi. This remark drew attention because it came up while the show was introducing a separate piece of news — the end of that Kura Sushi tie-in — and Hashimoto’s blunt reaction, plus the on-air scolding that followed, got reported together as a package, which is part of why it caught fire. The thread split into roughly two camps: those defending him with “taste is subjective, Hashimoto didn’t do anything wrong,” and skeptics arguing he was “just playing his usual contrarian character and pretending not to know a hit series.” On top of that, plenty of people were simply baffled that Hashimoto, known for having a large number of children, wouldn’t recognize a character so deeply embedded even in kids’ culture. One thing worth clarifying so readers don’t get the wrong idea: this remark had nothing to do with the decision to end the Kura Sushi collaboration itself — it was just a reaction made while the show reported on a decision that had already been finalized.

Background and Talking Points on This Story

The article itself centers on the release of a recent photo, but opinion on the forum split into an “he’s doing fine” camp and a “can’t let your guard down” camp. The former took the speed of his discharge and the fact that he showed up at the office as proof of recovery, while the latter pointed to the asymmetry in the corner of his mouth and cheeks visible in the photo as a sign that some paralysis remains. Recovery after a stroke is said to follow a curve that depends heavily on how much time has passed since onset, and this was echoed in comments noting that “recovery is rapid for roughly the first six months after onset, but progress slows considerably after that.” Comparisons to Shigeo Nagashima and Beat Takeshi came up as well, though it’s worth noting that the location of their paralysis and the circumstances of their injuries differ, so their degree of recovery can’t simply be equated with Date’s.

The thread also noted that Yo Oizumi had previously received pears from Nakata as well, drawing attention to what looks like a habit of Nakata’s — gifting fruit to celebrity friends.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since retiring from professional football in 2010, Hidetoshi Nakata has been involved in travel, food, and wine ventures, and has repeatedly been reported gifting regionally sourced produce directly to celebrity acquaintances. In this case too, the thread surfaced information that Yo Oizumi had received pears from him on a separate occasion, suggesting this is less a one-off special gift and more a recurring gesture toward friends in the entertainment world. Matsuoka himself never named a specific price, so 5ch speculation like “over 1,000 yen each” remains just that — speculation. On the question of origin, one comment claimed Yamanashi also grows “La France” pears, but it’s worth noting that La France, a Western pear variety, is actually best known as a specialty of Yamagata Prefecture, and is easily confused with Yamanashi’s own nashi pears.

  • Zero-fee state-run cashless payment plan sparks debate — 5ch: ‘Wipe out credit cards’

A post arguing that “the government should build a zero-fee national payment app and wipe out credit cards and PayPay” went viral on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo G (Live News general) board. The complaint stems from the fact that cashless payments come with fees paid to credit card companies and QR-code payment providers, a burden that falls on stores and consumers alike. In response to the view that “if the government ran it, there’d be no need for fees,” other posters pushed back with arguments like “someone still has to cover development and operating costs” and “without fees to collect, there’s no incentive for the government to bother,” and the thread spiraled into a detailed debate comparing the cost of electronic payments to the cost of minting physical cash.

If they actually did this, the Bank of Japan would issue cashless-specific government bonds at the same interest rate as regular bonds, have financial institutions underwrite them, and circulate that amount as digital yen — with every transaction properly logged to a server.

Functionally it's the same as printing ¥10,000 bills, except stashing cash under the mattress to dodge taxes would no longer work. Good for tracking welfare payments (namapo) and NPO subsidies too.

    115AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:44
    Re: #111
I get that, but it puts the biggest burden on the store, though..

Background and key points of this debate

The Japanese government has set raising the cashless payment ratio as a policy goal, but the actual payment infrastructure is run by private companies such as credit card issuers and QR-code payment providers. The transaction fees charged to merchants are often covered by non-disclosed contracts, and the burden is said to fall especially hard on small and mid-sized stores. That’s the backdrop for the idea that “the government should just build a zero-fee payment network,” but the thread split over who would actually cover the operating costs — development, maintenance, fraud prevention, and so on. Whether it’s even fair to compare the cost of minting and circulating physical cash to electronic payment fees also became a point of contention, and part of the discussion devolved into something closer to personal attacks. It’s worth noting, since it’s an easy point of confusion, that while the Bank of Japan has been running phased pilot tests of a “digital yen” since 2021, this remains purely at the research stage — it is not, as some posters implied, a concrete plan for a zero-fee payment app like the one discussed in the thread.

  • Elderly Struggle with Touchscreen Ordering — 5ch: ‘Can’t See Tiny Text with Presbyopia’

A Yahoo News street interview reporting on elderly customers’ frustration with touchscreen ordering systems—now widespread at restaurants and chain stores—became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Whatever’s Live” board (Nanademo Jikkyo G). The article features comments from elderly people who want to order directly from staff but get told “please use the touchscreen,” which makes them angry. In the thread, sympathetic opinions—citing presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) making text hard to read, or difficulty keeping up with the interface—clashed with harsher takes dismissing it as simply a refusal to adapt. Many also pointed out that the tablets’ screens and navigation flow are just poorly designed to begin with.

(Person on the street, expressing opposition)

“With a big menu board you can just look and see it easily, right? That’s why I don’t like [tablets]. When I call out to the waitress, she just says ‘please use the tablet.’ That really ticks me off.”

“It’s such a hassle! Hard to use! It’s confusing. The screen keeps changing one after another. I just can’t keep up.”

People around 70 now used PCs at work and went through flip phones and smartphones too, so it's probably the generation above them [that struggles]

It's that "why should I, the customer, have to [adapt]" mentality
You see a lot of that type among middle-aged guys

    Re: #37
Touching this stuff for the first time at work after you're already an old man is a totally different level of experience from having used it since you were a kid or a young employee
Sure, there are old guys who can handle it fine, but the ratio of people who can't inevitably goes up the older you get

    No way
Even among the Ice Age generation [Japan's "employment ice age" cohort, hit hardest by the 1990s-2000s job market collapse], only about 25% can actually use a PC

We can keep up now, but
    when we're 70-80
will we be able to keep up with whatever new tech comes out by then?

    Re: #39
Even now, when it comes to smartphones, the "G-min" [regulars of the Nanademo Jikkyo G board] generation is probably already behind younger people
And as G-min get older, they'll keep drifting toward the "can't keep up" side too
    41AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:15
A guy in his 60s-70s who says "I got interested back in the day and used Windows 95 when it came out" will handle things smoothly
But once you're a late-stage elderly person [75+], that kind of intellectual curiosity is just gone entirely

    Re: #41
At the hospital there's a whole line of elderly people who can't even authenticate their My Number [Japan's national ID] card
Right next to them someone's telling the nurse some wild story like "lost my patient card, no insurance card, My Number? huh?"
The second it's a machine, they just have an allergic reaction to it, I guess
    48AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:19
Even at Saizeriya, elderly people just casually call over staff and order normally
They probably don't even think for a second that tying up the staff means everyone else's food arrives later

    Re: #48
Well if they genuinely can't order, what can you do

All you do is scan it with your phone and tap a few buttons?
    It's not that they can't — they just won't

G-min [board regulars] be like: "Don't make customers pay for their own data charges! 😡"

    Re: #54
    No, not that
    I mean the in-store tablets
As an example, take the tablets at Tenya [tempura chain]
On that tiny tablet the photos are printed ridiculously small
To the point where having a photo at all is pointless
And on top of that there's an "are you sure you want to start ordering?" button
plus a language selection screen, so you end up pressing about 4 buttons just to reach the menu
Tenya really ought to complain to the development company about that
but the higher-ups are probably elderly themselves and don't know any better, so it got approved as-is
    67AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:28
Come on, at least wait on the elderly properly
Young people will just quietly order on the tablet anyway

    Re: #67
If there's no sign saying "verbal orders not accepted,"
    then staff should handle it
But that would cut the cost-saving benefit in half
    68AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:29
Touchscreens are fine, but what about the ones where you scan a QR code — what do you do if you don't have a smartphone?
    71AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:30
    Re: #68
    Nobody's really in that situation

Well, if I'm being serious, you'd just order directly from staff

    Re: #65
Dunno about Tenya, but if you can't read small text, why not just prepare for that [bring glasses or a magnifier]?
Why do you assume the world's supposed to accommodate you?

    Re: #78
    Exactly
If they can't design the menu properly
they should just include a full list of zoomable photos already
    81AnonymousSep 13, 2026 17:33
Thinking about this with your current mindset doesn't really mean anything

Like, say ordering became CUI [command-line interface] by default
and to order a beer you had to type in a command like this:

    DIR>DRINKS> BEER.EXE /COUNT:1

And suppose all the young people understood it fine and kept up — wouldn't you be sitting there going "I have no idea what's going on"?

    Re: #89
The GUI design is just broken
Especially Matsuya [beef bowl chain] a few years back
    It had hellishly bad usability
and became a huge topic of discussion because of it

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Touchscreen ordering spread rapidly at beef-bowl chains and family restaurants amid labor shortages and cost-cutting pressures, and because it’s such a familiar topic, opinions tend to split sharply. The thread’s debate largely breaks down into two camps: those sympathetic to physical and generational factors like presbyopia or unfamiliarity with devices, versus those who dismiss it as simply a lack of effort. What’s easy to overlook — as pointed out with the Tenya and Matsuya examples — is that flaws in the UI design itself, like tiny photos or too many steps to confirm an order, make things hard to use for everyone, not just the elderly. So while this looks like a simple “elderly vs. digital” clash, it’s worth keeping in mind that design failures are mixed in as well. It’s also worth noting that the original article’s street interviews reflect only a handful of voices and can’t be generalized as representative of elderly people as a whole.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “Elderly person: “Hey! Order!” Staff: “Please use the touchscreen.” Elderly person: “Like hell I’m doing something that much of a hassle!”.”
