  • 5ch Users Rattle Off Their Favorite Pro Wrestling Moves — 5ch: “The Headlock Is About to Become the ‘Big Lock’”

A thread on 5ch turned into a lively chat about the pro wrestling moves fans remember most. It kicked off with the “5 major moves” — the Giant Swing, Dropkick, Cobra Twist, Lariat, and Camel Clutch — but replies quickly piled on with Backdrops, Piledrivers, Powerbombs, and more. Posters started sorting moves by era (Showa, Heisei, Reiwa) and even debated who threw the first-ever Powerbomb. With each reply adding a new move name and no one derailing the thread, it turned into a genuine showcase of just how deep wrestling fans’ knowledge runs.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Pro wrestling move names mix Japanese and English terms depending on the promotion and era, with many coined by commentators and announcers themselves. The “16-Mon Kick” mentioned in the thread is famously Giant Baba’s move, while the “Tombstone Piledriver” is associated with the original Tiger Mask — both names are rooted in Japan’s pro wrestling broadcast culture. Where the thread split was over the Powerbomb’s origin: some argued it was born by accident during Antonio Inoki’s 1977 mixed-match bout against Monster Man, while others credited Tenryu Genichiro with popularizing it. Neither theory has been settled as the definitive account. It’s worth noting that the origins of wrestling moves are poorly documented in written sources and rely heavily on fans’ memories and secondhand accounts. Move names also often use catchy Japanese-English coinages or kanji phrasing, and which moves fans grew up with tends to vary by generation — both factors that helped fuel the thread’s momentum.

  • $3,940-a-Month iPhone ‘Balloon Loan’ Plan Sparks Debate on 5ch

The “residual value loan” (zan-kure) plan, familiar from car sales, is now spreading to smartphones too. Under NTT Docomo’s “Itsudemo Kaedoki Program,” customers who agree to return their device after 23 months can keep their monthly payments down in the ¥2,000s. A 5ch thread reacting to the news kicked off with “Why would anyone do this — it’s not a good deal for the buyer at all,” and the discussion snowballed into price comparisons with older mid-range Android phones, the hassle of switching from iPhone to Android, and what happens if you lose or break the device — all real concerns for anyone actually weighing whether to sign up.

“Residual value loans” are spreading to smartphones too

A “residual value loan” (zan-kure) plan, common in car sales, has now arrived for phones as well. With this type of loan, a future trade-in value (the residual value) is set in advance, and the buyer only finances the remaining portion of the purchase price.

NTT Docomo offers this under the name “Itsudemo Kaedoki Program” (roughly, “Trade-In Anytime Program”). The plan assumes the device will be returned at the 23-month mark. For example, on a phone priced at ¥100,000 with a residual value of ¥50,000, the buyer only pays off ¥50,000 over 23 months — working out to just under ¥2,200 a month. If you keep using the phone past month 24, you can pay off the remaining residual value in new installments.

    44AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:53
Just borrow it for ¥1, return it after 24 months, keep hopping carriers — sure it's not the newest model, but you get another brand-new, untouched iPhone for another ¥1
Throw in a ¥500 insurance plan (or something even cheaper) and you're covered with zero penalty at return time
Insurance runs about ¥12,000 over 2 years, but you'd pay for coverage on a phone you bought outright too.

Had an iPhone 14 on Docomo for about ¥770/month, for 2 years
No charge-limiting feature, so max charge capacity dropped to 80%
Dropped it once and chipped a corner, but Docomo's inspection is lenient so the return went through fine
Switched to Rakuten Mobile and got the iPhone 16e — it's been 10 months, and since I capped charging at 80%, the battery's still holding at 97% capacity
No scratches, and I've got insurance on it
Aiming for the iPhone 17 next
I can't stand even a 1mm scratch, so I have no plans to ever buy one outright.

    Re: #56
You lose access to buying your apps.

Background and key points of this discussion

The “zan-kure” (residual value loan) scheme originally comes from car sales: you subtract an estimated future trade-in value (the residual value) up front, then pay off only the remainder in installments. Docomo’s “Itsudemo Kaedoki Program” applies the same idea to smartphones — agree to return the device after 23 months, and your effective monthly cost can drop into the ¥2,000s. The catch, often overlooked, is that this isn’t really “ownership” so much as a de facto rental: lose or damage the phone within those 23 months and you’re on the hook for a hefty bill that includes the residual value. In the thread, some argued that on pure price, an older mid-range Android is still the cheaper option, while others countered that iPhone users get trapped by high “switching costs” — from in-app purchases to cloud ecosystems — that make it hard to walk away regardless of the math. Several posters also raised practical questions about how much insurance actually covers damage risk at return time, which is worth checking before signing up for a plan like this.

  • Woman Who Used Diabetes Drug Mounjaro for Weight Loss Got Scared by Drastic Weight Drop: ‘I Don’t Think I’ll Use It Again’

The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that the diabetes drug Mounjaro is increasingly being used nationwide for weight loss rather than its approved purpose, with complaints reaching even Kumamoto Prefecture’s consumer affairs center. One woman who actually used it said she was frightened by how drastically her weight dropped, adding, “I don’t think I’ll use it again.” Doctors are warning of possible health damage from using the drug outside its intended purpose. On 5ch, actual users arguing “it’s fine if used correctly” clashed with those worried about long-term risks like osteoporosis and muscle loss, and the discussion expanded beyond Mounjaro to the risks of repurposing other diabetes drugs as well.

The use of the diabetes drug Mounjaro for weight-loss purposes has become a nationwide problem. In Kumamoto Prefecture alone, two complaints have been filed with the prefectural consumer affairs center, and Dr. Ken Doi of Doi Internal Medicine Clinic (Minami Ward, Kumamoto City) warns that “using it for a purpose other than intended can cause health damage.” A woman who has actually used the drug spoke with the Yomiuri Shimbun. Background and key points of this discussion

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist approved in Japan for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. It’s meant to be prescribed by a doctor for specific approved conditions, but off-label use for cosmetic weight loss has spread nationwide, prompting complaints even to Kumamoto Prefecture’s Consumer Affairs Center — the backdrop for this article. On the thread, actual users insisting “it’s fine if you use it correctly” clashed with cautious voices warning of risks like osteoporosis and muscle loss, and no consensus was reached. One commonly misunderstood point: losing weight doesn’t cure diabetes itself — without fixing the underlying insulin problem, it isn’t a real treatment. Other diabetes drugs like Forxiga are likewise being repurposed for weight loss, with risks such as dehydration and other side effects reported, suggesting this isn’t a Mounjaro-only issue but part of a broader pattern of diabetes medications being used off-label.

  • Sou Takei Sounds the Alarm: ‘Money-Hungry Zealots Are Swarming the Attention-For-Cash Machine’

On the night of September 14, TV personality Sou Takei posted on X warning that “the machine that turns attention into money, no matter the method, is baring its fangs even at reckless, greedy zealots” — a message cautioning against the SNS-era obsession with chasing attention at any cost. On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ board, many pointed out that Takei himself — who built his fame on tales of taking down a lion and appearances in animal-slipper segments — has used an “attention-grabbing machine” of his own, while others argued that the sponsorship-based business model behind TV and social media has simply hit its limits, splitting opinion down the middle.

Sou Takei: “A machine that turns attention into money regardless of method… bares its fangs even at reckless zealots…” — shares his thoughts

TV personality Sou Takei updated his X account on the night of the 14th, posting a warning about the state of the world today.

The remarks appear to address the harms of the attention economy — where simply grabbing attention on social media translates directly into money — and the state of society as a whole.

I think the sponsorship-based business model is already dead.
You can tell just by looking at TV and the internet these days —

The sponsorship business model is absolute garbage.
These days every gap gets stuffed with ads, ads, ads — it's ads everywhere you look,
and since they just pass that ad cost onto product prices and skim it little by little off consumers, it keeps growing without end.

Wasn't it "taking down a lion with his bare hands"? lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

The “machine that turns attention into money” Takei pointed to appears to refer to the so-called attention economy, in which social media view counts and tips translate directly into revenue. On the thread, some noted that the concept itself originated overseas, while others drew parallels to the limits of TV’s ratings race and ad-revenue model. At the same time, since Takei himself built his fame through a striking persona — like his “bare-handed lion takedown” story — and TV appearances in animal slippers, plenty of pointed remarks asked whether the person who has used the attention-grabbing machine the most has any right to lecture about it. The mix of criticism and sympathy seems to stem from the fact that while few disagreed with the substance of his remarks, many kept questioning whether they squared with his own career.

  • Rumor: Xbox Game Pass to Add Ads, Kill Day-One Releases — Maybe Even a ¥300 Price Cut

Speculation is spreading around Xbox Game Pass over possible changes: a cheaper ad-supported tier, the end of day-one release availability, and a ¥300 monthly price cut. The source is a post reportedly from a moderator on the gaming forum ResetEra, who is said to have correctly called last October’s Game Pass changes ahead of time. On 5ch, threads argued over whether this source can be trusted, while reactions to the end of day-one split between people welcoming it as “a good sign — less gets sunk into games this way” and people worried that “there’d be no reason left to choose Xbox.”

PC Game Pass will be discontinued, leaving only Game Pass Standard and Game Pass Core, and day-one games will be gone. Game Pass
Ultimate's price rises to $25 (this could slip to 2026).
Cloud streaming will be included in every tier.

Subscription renaming will mirror the PSN tiers (unconfirmed):
Game Pass Core → Game Pass Essential,
Game Pass Standard → Game Pass Premium.

    In 2026:

    A cheaper ad-supported tier,

    Re: #134
There were developers before who said their Game Pass contracts got torn up,
so having a contract doesn't matter if they just cancel it.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Xbox Game Pass’s headline feature has been “day-one” access to new releases, but the soaring cost of big-budget game development has made the burden this places on publishers an increasing concern. A cheaper, ad-supported tier follows a revenue model already pioneered by streaming services like Netflix, and it looks like that trend is now spilling over into gaming. What split the thread was the credibility of the source — a ResetEra moderator: some praised their track record of past accurate calls, while others pointed out that parts of the claim (like “PC Game Pass being discontinued”) were wrong, and opinions differed over whether the poster ever actually retracted it. It’s worth noting this isn’t an official Microsoft announcement but unconfirmed information from an overseas forum, and details like how already-contracted titles would be handled remain unclear.

  • Yuji Oda on Playing Aoshima: ‘The Savior of My Acting Career’ — Finally Free From His Kanchi Conflict

Actor Yuji Oda, ahead of the September 18 release of his first new “Bayside Shakedown” film in 14 years, “Bayside Shakedown: N.E.W. Metropolis wo Kakenukero!”, sat down for an exclusive interview with Sports Hochi and opened up about his feelings toward Shunsaku Aoshima, the role he has played for 29 years since the TV series began. In his breakout role as Kanchi in “Tokyo Love Story,” he carried the conflict of feeling “Kanji isn’t me” — but he says that meeting the role of Aoshima, who has no gap from his true self, freed him from that burden. On 5channel’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, the thread grew with comparisons of Oda’s best-known roles, debate over the truth behind rumors of a rift with Toshiro Yanagiba, and discussion of on-screen spoilers.

He hasn't really played a character overlapping with Aoshima anywhere else, though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The source is an exclusive interview timed to the release of the franchise’s first new “Bayside Shakedown” film in 14 years, 29 years after the TV series began. Oda revealed he carried the conflict of feeling “Kanji isn’t me” over his breakout role in “Tokyo Love Story,” but felt “freed” playing Aoshima since there’s no gap between the role and his real self — several thread replies quote this passage directly to fill in the context. The thread split over which work best represents him (votes scattered across “If You Look Back, He’s There,” “I Have No Money!,” and “Bayside Shakedown”), plus posts noting that rumored rifts with co-stars were tabloid fabrications. One point readers could easily misread: the comment about Muroi’s death refers to a spoiler within the fictional storyline, not an actual death.

  • Is a ¥550 pork cutlet too expensive? 5ch: ‘That’s ¥200 more than I expected’

Matsuya Foods Group’s tonkatsu (pork cutlet) specialty chain “Matsunoya” is offering a ¥550 “Value Morning Loin Cutlet Set” available from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. The set comes with tonkatsu, miso soup, cabbage, and potato salad, with free refills on rice, miso soup, and cabbage — details that were featured in a news segment. The 5ch thread that followed buzzed with debate over whether it’s really okay to eat fried food in the morning, its calorie count, reactions to a price that felt higher than expected, and comparisons of price and taste with rival chains.

Tonkatsu first thing in the morning! We check out Matsunoya’s ¥550 “Value Morning Loin Cutlet Set”

At “Matsunoya,” the tonkatsu specialty chain run by major gyudon (beef bowl) chain operator Matsuya Foods Holdings, reporter Ohki Na’s top pick is the ¥550 “Value Morning Loin Cutlet Set.” It comes with freshly fried tonkatsu, miso soup, cabbage, and potato salad — plus free rice refills — making it a truly “godly” deal. This morning menu is available from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m.

    Re: #188
Do you seriously think people who eat out haven't already figured that out???

Background and key points of this discussion

Matsuya Foods Holdings operates not only the gyudon (beef bowl) chain “Matsuya” but also the tonkatsu specialty chain “Matsunoya” nationwide, and has been focused on capturing morning demand by leveraging its late-night and early-morning hours. At ¥550, the set is pricier than the going rate for morning menus at gyudon chains, and the original article doesn’t make clear that free refills apply only to rice, miso soup, and cabbage — not to items like the potato salad. In the thread, anecdotal claims that “you can only eat fried food in the morning while you’re young” were countered by comments like “it’s fine if you just got off a night shift,” suggesting that how people perceive digestion time varies by generation and daily rhythm. There was also frustration that the ¥430 morning soba at station-soba chain “Irori-an Kiraku” wasn’t covered in the news segment, with some noting that even within the same “morning menu roundup,” coverage tends to favor certain chains over others.

  • Gundam Fans Debate: Which Mobile Suit Would You Least Want to Pilot? 5ch Names the ‘MS of Nightmares’

A Yahoo News article titled “Gundam Mobile Suits That Seem to Have an Extremely Low Return Rate” sparked a thread on 5ch where users debated which Mobile Suit they’d refuse to pilot no matter what. Names that came up one after another included the Federation’s mass-produced Ball, the Zeon Zudah (a limited-area combat unit that saw action after returning from Jupiter), and the Pabrikk, which is used in something close to suicide-attack tactics. Many posters backed up their picks with in-story depictions and lore rather than just a “looks weak” impression, and some even took a contrarian stance, arguing that the Ball’s small size might actually make it harder for enemies to hit. The thread ended up going well beyond simple “weak mobile suit” mockery.

Which one would you least want to ride…!? The “MS of nightmares” that seem to have an extremely low return rate in Gundam works

This year marks 47 years since the original anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), first went on air.

The show has plenty of highlights, but its huge variety of appealing mecha—Mobile Suits chief among them—is surely one of its biggest draws.

With the Ball, if you just floated upside down and didn't move, you could probably survive because nobody would bother with you lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The “return rate” in the original article isn’t an official stat or setting—it’s a provocative framing based on impressions from how things play out on-screen, without any rigorous basis. What split opinion in the thread was partly a statistical nitpick (can you really call a one-off prototype that got destroyed a “0% return rate,” when it’s just 0 out of 1?), and partly a reversal in how the Ball got evaluated—the idea that this general-purpose support unit might actually be more likely to survive precisely because it can avoid close combat. The Gundam franchise has gone through a lot of setting changes driven by production circumstances, and a mobile suit’s perceived strength often shifts depending on pilot skill or the needs of the story, which is why “weakest MS” rankings like this one are still a go-to topic of conversation 47 years after the show first aired.

  • Marathon’s Season 3 Delayed to December, Seasonal Model to Be Scrapped

A Reddit post has revealed that Season 3 of “Marathon” — Sony and Bungie’s new extraction shooter — has been pushed back to December 8th, and that the seasonal content model itself is being scrapped going forward. On 5channel’s hardware/industry board (commonly called “Geha,” short for ゲーム業界/game industry), posters pointed to reports that concurrent player counts have hit new all-time lows on both peaks and troughs, drew comparisons to “Concord” — which shut down less than two weeks after launch despite a roughly ¥40 billion ($270M) development budget — and cited Bungie’s roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B) acquisition price, sparking a wave of speculation about whether the game can survive and when it might get shut down.

So what are they gonna do about this?

Xbox torched itself with Redfall and Starfield
Halo and Gears aren't exactly popular anymore either

    Background and key points

Marathon is a new title from Bungie, the studio Sony acquired in 2022 for roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B), with a development budget reported at around ¥40 billion ($270M). Sony’s live-service track record includes “Concord,” which was also built on a roughly ¥40 billion budget and shut down less than two weeks after launch — the thread’s comparisons are drawn directly from that precedent. The Season 3 delay and the decision to abandon the seasonal model altogether both read as a course correction from the original live-service plan. That said, the claimed “all-time low” concurrent player counts and the specific figures cited for the Bungie acquisition and development budget come from posters in the thread and haven’t been independently verified against a primary source. The thread also brings up other Sony titles and past layoff reports, suggesting the unease here isn’t really about Marathon in isolation, but broader distrust of Sony’s live-service business as a whole.

Yamamoto, a three-time wrestling world champion who also competed in RIZIN, acquired Canadian citizenship during her wrestling career, and without belonging to a gym affiliated with the Japan Boxing Commission, she is competing as a Canadian national holding an Australian boxing license. Her pro debut in March ended in a decision loss. On 5ch, users voiced concern about her competing at age 52, alongside a technical debate over age and KO risk in women’s boxing.

Miyuu Yamamoto (Canada), who makes her domestic pro boxing debut at “DANGAN” on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, attended the pre-fight weigh-in on the 14th. She made weight at 50.2kg, 600g under the flyweight limit. Her opponent, Chika Taguchi (Hanagata), made weight at 50.4kg, 400g under the limit.

Yamamoto, a three-time world wrestling champion who also competed in RIZIN, acquired Canadian citizenship during her wrestling days. Although she isn’t registered with a gym affiliated with the Japan Pro Boxing Association, she will fight in Japan as a Canadian national holding an Australian boxer’s license.

Ahead of her pro debut in Australia, she fractured her arm while serving as an MMA sparring partner in December 2025 and underwent surgery, leaving her without enough sparring time. She still made her pro boxing debut in March in a six-round bout, but lost a split decision (1-2) to local fighter Michelle Mack.

Something's off — this isn't the Miyuu Yamamoto I remember.

Yeah, she looks like a stranger to me too.
I feel like I've only ever seen her on stage 3 of Gradius (a classic shoot-'em-up game — likely a joke about a boss character's look).

    She's doing this at 52?
Impressive, but is she really going to be okay?

    Miyuu Yamamoto (52)
1995-1999: Nobuyasu Ikeda (former soccer player), 4 years older
2000-2004: Ensen Inoue (pro wrestler), 7 years older
2006-2011: Akira Sasaki (pro skier), 7 years younger
2020-present: Kyle Aguon (MMA fighter), 15 years younger

Women generally hit with less power than men even within the same weight class, so knockdown and KO rates are much lower.
A woman who can land a 👊 clean enough to actually drop someone is rare.
Which also means less damage to the 🧠.

Women also can't cut and rehydrate as much water weight as men can, due to the difference in muscle mass.
So the toll from cutting weight ends up being lighter for women too.

It's the weak punches that don't KO you that get dangerous when you keep eating them over and over.
You're playing expert but you're clearly a total amateur.

    Re: #30
Even with fewer punches taken, losing by KO to a head shot in an early round is generally more dangerous.
    At least medically speaking.

    Re: #30
    Nice try playing expert 🤣

There's a theory that ring fatalities are more likely to happen in the mid-to-late rounds once accumulated head damage builds up, but the statistics don't actually show a clear trend like that.
Since the effects of head punches depend on a mix of factors from both the puncher and the one being hit, many experts say it's hard to pin down exactly what causes ring fatalities.

Accident statistics show ring fatality rates are about the same for flyweight and heavyweight,
and most ring deaths happen in fights that end in a KO loss.

If KID were still alive, she probably wouldn't be clinging to her career like this. (Her younger brother, Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto, a celebrated MMA fighter who died in 2018.)

If Miyuu can still get in the ring,
why could Tatsuyoshi never get licensed all those years? (Likely referring to legendary boxer Jôichirô Tatsuyoshi, repeatedly denied a license over a detached retina.)

    I wonder how she'd stack up against a Japanese-ranked men's minimumweight fighter?
    66AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:12
Honestly, wrestling was clearly her best sport.
Even in MMA, I remember she was great at getting the takedown but couldn't do much once she was there.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Miyuu Yamamoto comes from a family of fighters and is a three-time world wrestling champion; her younger brother, Norifumi “KID” Yamamoto, was also a celebrated MMA fighter who passed away from illness in 2018. This “domestic debut” isn’t the result of going through Japan’s usual pro boxing licensing process — instead, she’s competing in Japan using the Canadian citizenship she obtained during her wrestling career and an Australian boxing license, without belonging to a gym affiliated with the Japan Boxing Commission, a detail the original article doesn’t explain in much depth and that readers can easily misread. On the forum thread, opinion split over how KO risk in women’s boxing relates to age and punches taken, with one camp judging danger by the gender gap in punching power and another emphasizing cumulative damage. Commenters noted this isn’t medically settled, so there’s no simple conclusion.
