Marathon’s Season 3 Delayed to December, Seasonal Model to Be Scrapped

The story

A Reddit post has revealed that Season 3 of “Marathon” — Sony and Bungie’s new extraction shooter — has been pushed back to December 8th, and that the seasonal content model itself is being scrapped going forward. On 5channel’s hardware/industry board (commonly called “Geha,” short for ゲーム業界/game industry), posters pointed to reports that concurrent player counts have hit new all-time lows on both peaks and troughs, drew comparisons to “Concord” — which shut down less than two weeks after launch despite a roughly ¥40 billion ($270M) development budget — and cited Bungie’s roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B) acquisition price, sparking a wave of speculation about whether the game can survive and when it might get shut down.

So what are they gonna do about this?

By the way, yesterday's concurrent player numbers hit new worst-ever lows for both peak and bottom

Re: #6
Maybe about one 'Concord' worth of lifespan left

Given Sony's cost-cutting mindset, it's done after this next one

Re: #6
Sounds like they're in a meeting figuring out who has to fall on their sword
7AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:52
It's lasted longer than Concord, so we're safe theory

The end result of a AAA game Sony bought for ¥500 billion and spent ¥40 billion developing…
10AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:54
If this new approach doesn't work out, it really is over this time
Last chance
Even so, the fact it's still out there and running at all makes it a success story second only to Helldivers 2 (at least by SIE's own rankings)
11AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:55
How are the PlayStation faithful going to spin this one?
12AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:55
They were probably counting on this title to boost MAU numbers in the earnings report, but that math is way off now
They need to make their move before Helldivers 2 starts losing steam
13AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:55
With a seasonal structure, you could just quietly walk away at a season break

But does this game even still find matches right now?
14AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:56
A game with maybe 2,000 active players at its peak, and they're still cranking out updates — what a devoted team

Dozens of people working for the sake of 2,000 players is almost impressive
Like some underground idol group
15AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:56
Updates ending right at the six-month mark
Server shutdown in another six months, probably
17AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:58
They spend hundreds of billions of yen buying a studio to put out garbage like this, then cut Kojima loose — real visionaries at Sony

And PlayStation fans keep following a company like that, of course they do
19AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:00
And there's also Wolverine, that easy-mode kiddie splatter game currently getting torched online too

Being a PlayStation fan really must be a point of pride for them
20AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:00
There's no way this is just a simple delay
Something's definitely falling apart internally…
30AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:08
They stopped updating Destiny 2, so surely they've got spare hands lying around, right?
Meaning the 'surplus staff' pool is only growing

Re: #30
Part of the Destiny team has already been laid off, though…
40AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:23
Isn't the real problem that they keep churning out games in similar genres and fold them the moment things go even slightly south? No wonder players never stick around
43AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:27
Re: #40
Exactly right
Basically the Square Enix mobile-game playbook
46AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:27
Why keep it limping along half-heartedly like this at all?
53AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:35
Re: #46
Because the acquisition price was way too huge to just walk away
57AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:41
Sounds like it's basically pivoting to pure PvE
61AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:46
Re: #57
Trying to fix things up and keep it going is fine in principle, but the people playing Marathon are into it for the PvPvE mix — if it goes full PvE they'll bail, and PvE fans aren't going to jump into a service that's this visibly scrambling
Still, that beats just yanking the plug out of nowhere
60AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:45
If they'd just shut it down now the damage would be so much smaller…
Pure wounded pride at this point
65AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:49
Re: #60
Shutting it down fast would trigger a refund firestorm, so…
Leaving it on life support is actually the safer play
63AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:48
It's still got roughly twice the player count of the new Marvel fighting game, though?
70AnonymousSep 15, 2026 08:53
Re: #63
Is that other game only played by two people or something?
77AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:00
People kept saying Sony had plenty of other things to cut before Kojima, and sure enough it looks like this one's on the chopping block too
At this rate there's going to be nothing left
84AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:07
Re: #77
There's still the space-baldy game!

Though once that one ships, there really will be nothing left…
90AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:16
Given the development budget, this should be a much bigger deal, but the title's basically been forgotten even overseas at this point
They probably want to Concord it, but doing that a second time would confirm 'three strikes' territory, so this is the least-bad option
95AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:30
Re: #90
The reputation of 'Sony's live-service games always get shut down fast' has already stuck
Which means people stop spending money on them too

So they've got no choice but to keep bleeding money on this and the Marvel fighting game both
97AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:34
How did the PS5 manage to beat Xbox when every single exclusive is garbage?
100AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:42
Re: #97
Xbox torched itself with Redfall and Starfield
Halo and Gears aren't exactly popular anymore either

Background and key points

Marathon is a new title from Bungie, the studio Sony acquired in 2022 for roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B), with a development budget reported at around ¥40 billion ($270M). Sony’s live-service track record includes “Concord,” which was also built on a roughly ¥40 billion budget and shut down less than two weeks after launch — the thread’s comparisons are drawn directly from that precedent. The Season 3 delay and the decision to abandon the seasonal model altogether both read as a course correction from the original live-service plan. That said, the claimed “all-time low” concurrent player counts and the specific figures cited for the Bungie acquisition and development budget come from posters in the thread and haven’t been independently verified against a primary source. The thread also brings up other Sony titles and past layoff reports, suggesting the unease here isn’t really about Marathon in isolation, but broader distrust of Sony’s live-service business as a whole.
