  • Raising an Autistic Child Is Harder Than You’d Think — 5ch Thread: ‘I’m Autistic Myself, But I Managed to Become Independent’

A thread about raising an autistic child, posted on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, drew a wave of responses. Unlike Down syndrome, which can be identified through prenatal testing, autism usually isn’t suspected until around age 2-3, prompted by an infant health checkup, with a confirmed diagnosis often not reached until around age 5. The thread mixed perspectives from both parents and autistic posters themselves — covering how it feels to go through that diagnostic window, whether a child can manage in mainstream classrooms, and even a firsthand account of independence from a poster who says they’re autistic. Many voiced anxiety about the future, and while all kinds of personal experiences were shared, no clear consensus emerged.

With autism, only the body grows up — inside, they stay a kid as the years go by.

That checkup isn't all that reliable, though.
Plenty of kids get flagged and turn out totally fine.
Especially compared to the 3-year-old checkup, where the real screening starts.

Background and key points of this discussion

Unlike Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition identifiable through prenatal testing, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) generally can’t be spotted by appearance. Suspicion typically arises around age 2-3 following an infant health checkup, and after repeated behavioral observation, a confirmed diagnosis is often not reached until around age 5. The mismatched sense of “when diagnosis happens” among posters in the thread likely came from conflating being flagged as “possibly at risk” at the 1.5-year checkup with an eventual confirmed diagnosis. Autism is also a “spectrum” condition with a huge range in severity and traits — some people get through mainstream schooling without any trouble, while others need lifelong support. The account from the poster who revealed they’re autistic themselves, describing how they became independent, illustrates just how varied these outcomes can be. While the thread surfaced plenty of anxiety about the future and about coping in mainstream classrooms, no clear consensus emerged.

  • Palworld’s TGS Booth Quality Stuns Fans — 5ch: ‘This Indie Studio Can Only Make Masterpieces’

The craftsmanship of Palworld’s booth at the Tokyo Game Show became a hot topic online, with people saying “the quality is way too high for what’s basically a one-off exhibit,” sparking a thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The discussion ranged from astonishment at the exhibit’s polish to comparisons with Pokémon, the headcount at developer Pocketpair, trends in concurrent player numbers, and even the names of the artists behind the character designs. Opinions never converged, with voices questioning Game Freak’s development structure clashing against views that Palworld’s popularity has already cooled off.

Probably a bit more by now

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Palworld is the survival-crafting game released by Pocketpair in January 2024 that became a worldwide hit, and it has been compared to Pokémon since launch. In this thread as well, when someone asked “what exactly did it copy,” no one could give a concrete answer, showing how vague the basis for the criticism remains. The thread also shared the fact that as of this July, the company had 109 employees, setting up the discussion’s premise about how small its development scale is compared to major studio Game Freak. There’s also talk that concurrent player numbers have dropped back to pre-launch levels, but that’s based on data only some posters cited — it would be hasty to judge shifts in popularity purely from eyewitness impressions of how crowded the TGS venue looked.

  • 31-Year-Old With 30 Straight Losses in the Marriage Hunt: “Seriously, How Do I Even Get Married?”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board, started by a 31-year-old man who says he’s lost 30 straight rounds on dating apps. When he revealed he earns 8 million yen (roughly $55,000) a year, other posters accused him of lying, sparking talk about the harsh reality that dating apps are a battlefield with far more men than women. Many said even matchmaking agencies suffer from a shortage of female members. Some recommended marriage-focused apps or matchmaking agencies over casual dating apps, while others countered that agencies have their own problems too. Opinions were also split on why he can’t get past a third date into an actual relationship.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The marriage-hunting market is often criticized for its gender imbalance — most dating apps let women use them for free while charging men, a setup thread posters pointed to when arguing that “apps free for women draw less serious users.” Matchmaking agencies come up short too, since they require a serious commitment to marriage, leaving fewer registered members overall and especially limited options outside major cities. That said, it’s worth noting that the numbers cited in the thread — his age of 31, his reported income of 8 million yen, and his “30 losses in a row” — are all anonymous, self-reported claims that can’t be verified. As replies piled up, the debate shifted away from which marriage-hunting method is best and toward suspicion of the poster’s own behavior and honesty about his circumstances, producing a mix of genuine advice and mockery.

but I want ANGERME to take dance really seriously too (basically, I want us to be a group that can do both well) — I still want to keep working hard on that.

    Also, I really love dancing,

ANGERME fans all agree Hashisako is the top dance member among the current lineup — but once she graduates it defaults to Tamenaga, and everyone's wondering what to do about that

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project has long upheld a tradition across its groups that prioritizes “singing,” and Morning Musume and Juice=Juice are often judged more on vocal ability than on dance. Against that backdrop, Ise’s blog post — declaring that “ANGERME wants to take dance seriously too” — signaled her wish to raise dance’s importance within the group. While many in the thread welcomed the remark, opinions split sharply over how well-synced the group’s dancing actually is and how individual members’ skills stack up. Some pointed to comparisons with other groups (Morning Musume ’26, Juice=Juice, etc.) to argue that “ANGERME’s dancing still isn’t in sync,” while others countered that “of course each group has its own color.” A claim that a staff member on a TV program had pointed out sync issues with the dancing was also cited, with posters split on how seriously to take that remark. One thing readers shouldn’t mistake: these comparisons aren’t an official stance from the agency or the groups themselves — they’re purely fan impressions being traded back and forth.

  • ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Sends Letter From Prison, Says She’s Cut Ties With the ‘Bad World’

On September 17, the YouTube channel “Maruyama Gonzalez’s Deep World” posted a video titled “What Is ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Up to Now?”, in which writer Shinya Kusaka revealed he has received two letters this year from inmate Mai Watanabe, who is currently serving her sentence. Watanabe was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen for swindling roughly 150 million yen out of three men, among other charges — a ruling that has since been finalized. In the letters, she reportedly said she had cut ties with “people from the bad world” and pleaded, “Please, I want to talk again.” On 5ch, reactions split over how to take her words of repentance, with plenty of comments also focused on the harshness of her sentence and the fact that she’s profiting off broadcasting even from behind bars.

On September 17, the YouTube channel “Maruyama Gonzalez’s Deep World” (1.59 million subscribers) posted a video titled “What Is ‘Tribute Girl’ Riri Up to Now? Things Have Taken a Major Turn [Underworld Times],” in which writer Shinya Kusaka revealed he has received two letters this year from inmate Mai Watanabe, the “tribute girl” known as “Riri-chan” (10,000 subscribers on her own channel), who is currently serving her sentence.

Restitution project derailed by a romance with a pen pal

Watanabe was charged with swindling roughly 150 million yen out of three men and with aiding fraud by selling a manual detailing her methods, among other charges, and in January 2025 her sentence of 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen was finalized.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Mai Watanabe, known as “tribute girl Riri-chan,” had her sentence of 8 years and 6 months in prison plus a fine of 8 million yen finalized in January 2025 for swindling a total of roughly 150 million yen out of three men, among other charges. The reason someone behind bars can get information out to the public is that writer Shinya Kusaka acts as a go-between through visits and letters, and Watanabe’s writings are reportedly published for a fee, pulling in nearly 3 million yen in under two months. On the thread, opinions split between those questioning how harsh the sentence is and those calling it “practically light compared to other heinous crimes,” with some describing the way supporters, lawyers, and reporters keep becoming cooperative one after another as “brainwashing.” At the same time, exchanging letters and broadcasting from prison are not illegal in themselves, and the fact that her restitution project has reportedly stalled due to her relationship with a pen pal is a piece of the factual record worth noting separately from the emotional backlash.

  • Hiroyuki Weighs In on Why There Are No Amateur Debate Shows: ‘It’s Boring, and Few People Can Actually Talk’

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49), on his own YouTube channel, was asked by a viewer to “do a debate show with a bunch of amateurs,” and flatly shot the idea down: “It’s boring, and there are few people who can actually talk.” On 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, his comment sparked a wave of discussion citing real debate and talk shows like Serious Teens’ Talk Room, Abema Prime, and Asa made Nama TV as examples. While some argued that amateur participants tend to just sit there like furniture, many others pointed out the reality that these shows are often “scripted first,” with writers and editors shaping things beforehand — making the production structure of debate shows itself the main topic of discussion.

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his YouTube channel by the 18th, sharing his personal take on why there are no debate shows featuring amateurs.

That's a line Yamamoto Taro uses a lot.
Though at his own party-dissolution press conference, his true colors seemed to show and he talked in a really careless, throwaway tone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

How much scripting or editing goes into a debate show varies from program to program, and production teams rarely say so outright. Even amateur-participation and debate-style shows like Serious Teens’ Talk Room and Asa made Nama TV, despite their near-live format, are widely believed by viewers to involve pre-arranged discussions and editing behind the scenes, and comments in the thread speculating about that reality stood out. Hiroyuki’s remark that “few people can actually talk” is simply his own personal opinion stated on his YouTube channel, not a verified account of what goes on behind the scenes in production. The thread’s debate split between those who blame amateur participants themselves for lacking speaking skills, and those who point to the structure of the shows — the network choosing who gets the mic, limited speaking time — as the real cause.

A thread titled “Drinking again tonight~” popped up on 5ch (Nijisoku VIP), sparking a live play-by-play of someone’s evening drinks that ran deep into the night. The thread’s creator, sipping whiskey and lemon sours at home, revealed they’ve also been quietly keeping up a solo drinking ritual at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya — “park drinking” — for about 8 years. During the stretch when they posted daily, a crew of regulars formed, but six years back, a stalker reportedly showed up too. Other posters chimed in with their own snacks and drinks, and the thread turned into a rambling, good-natured booze chat.

    Background and Talking Points

On Nijisoku VIP, “drinking threads” pop up now and then, where someone live-posts while drinking and other users jump in. This time, the thread’s creator claims that on top of drinking at home in the evenings, they’ve kept up a solo-drinking habit at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya for close to 8 years. During the period when they posted threads daily, a group of regulars formed, but they also revealed that stalkers and people looking to hook up have shown up as well. Drinking in parks itself isn’t banned under most municipal ordinances, but keeping it up over the long term does carry some safety risks worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth noting that everything in the thread is just self-reported on an anonymous message board — there’s no way to verify the actual details, frequency, or past incidents at Tsurumai Park beyond the poster’s own claims.

  • New Fire Emblem Title ‘Banshi Senkou’ User Rating Crashes to 1.3 — 5ch Suspects ‘Manipulation’

The new Switch 2-exclusive Fire Emblem: Banshi Senkou has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board after scoring a dismal 1.3 out of 5 — with 0% positive ratings — in the user review section of the strategy site gamewith.jp. Some in the thread pointed to the earlier case of the PS5-exclusive Marvel title Wolverine, which racked up suspiciously high scores, and speculated that “this time it’s manipulation in reverse.” Others focused on complaints about the game itself — its 30fps performance, the odd inclusion of dungeon exploration in an SRPG, and a battle-skip feature — leaving the thread split over whether manipulation was really behind the low score.

Anime-style SRPGs are a genre where you'd think similar games exist, but they don't really
Even when they do, like Unicorn Overlord, they're multiplatform, so they can't be used as a club to beat anyone with
FE is the pioneer of the genre

That one got a fair, legitimate evaluation and still ended up like that
    Tough luck

    Background and Points of Contention

Banshi Senkou is a new Fire Emblem title released for the Switch 2. Because the gamewith.jp user review section referenced in the thread allows anyone to post freely, it has repeatedly been a venue where “review manipulation” — a concentrated burst of low ratings for a specific title shortly after launch — becomes a problem. The thread also brought up Wolverine, a Marvel action game released as a PS5 exclusive, which saw the opposite phenomenon: an unnaturally concentrated wave of high ratings that was later corrected. On the Geha board, opinions were split between those citing that incident to argue “this might be manipulation in the reverse direction” and those who believed the low score was simply genuine. The dispute extends beyond the question of manipulation itself to the game’s actual content — its 30fps performance, dungeon-exploration elements, and battle-skip feature. Readers should keep in mind that gamewith’s user ratings are user-submitted figures that tend to move in step with social media flare-ups and have inherent limits to their reliability, distinct from official review outlets’ scores or actual sales figures — a point of skepticism that came up within the thread itself.

  • National Art Museums to Hike Admission Fees 2-3x — 5ch: ‘Too Cheap at ¥500’

On September 18, the National Museum of Art (an independent administrative institution) announced it will progressively raise admission fees for the permanent collections at six facilities — including the National Museum of Western Art and the National Crafts Museum — starting in October. The increase amounts to 2-3 times the current price, attributed to rising transport and security costs driven by inflation and soaring energy prices. On 5ch threads, opinions were split between those who saw the hike as reasonable (“¥500 was too cheap to begin with,” “overseas museums typically charge around ¥5,000”) and those questioning the funding model (“but it’s run on taxpayer money”), with comparisons to admission fees at places like the British Museum and Seoul’s national museums also drawing attention.

The National Museum of Art, an independent administrative institution, announced on the 18th that it will progressively raise admission fees for the permanent collections at six facilities — including the National Museum of Western Art (Tokyo) and the National Crafts Museum (Ishikawa Prefecture) — starting this October. Fees will rise to roughly 2-3 times the current price. The museum cites rising costs for transporting and securing artworks due to inflation and soaring energy prices.

    Re: #67
The Grand Egyptian Museum is more than five Tokyo Domes in size, so there's no way to see it all in one visit

Japanese people are going to stop going even more, and if foreign tourist numbers ever drop, these museums are dead — another 'negative legacy' project in the making (a wasteful, burdensome public investment)

    Background and Key Points

The National Museum of Art is an independent administrative institution that relies heavily on public funding such as operating grants, but in recent years it has faced growing pressure to secure its own revenue. This particular hike targets admission fees for the permanent collections, not special or feature exhibitions — and as one thread reaction (“I thought this meant something like ¥2,000 going to ¥4,000”) illustrates, there’s a gap between how dramatic the phrase “2-3 times” sounds and how small the actual amounts are (roughly ¥500 to ¥1,000). The debate splits between those who consider the increase reasonable when compared to admission fees at major overseas institutions like the British Museum or Seoul’s museums (which run several thousand yen, or are free but rely on a different revenue model), and those who question the very idea of raising fees at a taxpayer-funded facility — with both sides grappling with the underlying question of how much draw the permanent collections actually have and how cultural institutions should secure their operating funds.

  • FC’s ‘King’s Knight’ Turns 40 — 5ch: “Controls Were Terrible, Game Was Boring”

King’s Knight, the Famicom game released by Square (as it was known then) on September 18, 1986, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. An article spotlighting retro games sparked a wave of nostalgia on 5ch, but opinions split sharply down the middle: harsh takes like “the controls were the absolute worst, total garbage, boring” versus high praise like “as much fun as Super Mario.” Many recalled picking it up expecting an RPG based on the box art, only to be thrown off when it turned out to be more of a shooter-style action game, and there was also a stream of posts mixing it up with similarly named but unrelated titles like King of Kings and King’s Field.

[September 18] Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Famicom release of King’s Knight!

    Already 40 years, huh
    It was so much fun
Square really ought to remake this

    Re: #6
    I actually bought this one
Looked like it'd be fun but wasn't really, so I don't think it needs a remake
    7AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:01
    It's basically a straight-up shooting game
Though compared to Zunou Senkan Galu (a shmup, 'Cerebral Boost Battleship'), it does have a bit of an RPG flavor

    Re: #7
Ah, the handy catch-all genre known as 'action RPG'
    8AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:04
I remember thinking the box art looked kind of like a Miyazaki Hayao illustration
    9AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:04
    Re: #1
No way you'd guess this box art hides a shooter
    10AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:06
Maybe Square Enix should use revivals of games like this to train new hires
    11AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:06
    I owned this
All I remember is that it was fun — I don't remember a single thing about what it was actually like
    14AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:06
Playing an RPG with no save feature
    is asking a bit much
    15AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:07
Saw the ads for this all the time but never actually played it
    Is it any good?
    16AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:08
Back in the day I got this in a batch of cartridges with no manual — I remember it being hard. Kind of want to play it now.

I always wonder this, but 40th anniversary of what, exactly?
If they were still selling this game, and it was still selling well, sure, I'd get it
But that's not really the case
    18AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:10
After playing FF, I rented this from the local rental shop thinking it was an RPG, and got so pissed when it turned out to be a shooter — 'the hell is this crap?!' Memories from grade school.
    19AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:10
As a kid I didn't understand the system and gave up at the final stage
Once the internet caught on I looked up info online and remember finally clearing it
    21AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:11
This probably wasn't actually that fun… memory just glorifies it though
    22AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:12
It was just as fun as Super Mario!
Pretty sure it was Square's best-selling game!
    23AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:13
Someone borrowed my copy and basically never gave it back, then finally returned it way later — I was so mad I smashed it right in front of him
    24AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:13
The hitbox quadruples in size on the last stage
    so it's brutally hard
    25AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:13
Looked at the box art and got a totally different game than expected
    26AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:17
It's like grabbing what you thought was barley tea and it turns out to be mentsuyu (noodle dipping sauce) — that level of 'wait, this is wrong'
    28AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:18
This was one of those games you couldn't clear without a strategy guide
Though back then that was just normal
    29AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:19
The cartridge itself was green, I recall.
Apparently at the time, Dragon Quest hadn't yet proven itself a hit, so Square wasn't in a position to fully commit to a proper RPG.
That said, the soundtrack was unmistakably Uematsu's work — it sounded a lot like FF1.
    30AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:20
    Wasn't King's Knight a simulation game?
Maybe I'm mixing it up with something else
    34AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:25
    Re: #30
That's probably King of Kings you're thinking of
    54AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:43
    Re: #30
    Isn't that King of Kings?
    32AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:21
I remember playing this a good amount at someone's house, but I have no idea whose copy it actually was
    33AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:22
Both King's Knight and Hanjuku Hero (lit. 'Half-Boiled Hero') were boring, so I sold them off quick
    35AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:27
Wasn't King's Knight made by From Software?
    37AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:27
    Re: #35
That's King's Field you're thinking of, not this
    47AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:33
Wasn't it the case that you couldn't clear the final stage unless all 4 characters were together?
    52AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:40
    Re: #47
    Yeah, exactly
Everyone has to collect the item needed to break through the wall zone before taking on the last stage
Otherwise you're guaranteed to get crushed by the walls partway through the final stage and wiped out
Though I only learned that once I was an adult
    48AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:34
Before they hit it big with FF, Square was kind of a bargain-bin developer — stuff like the arcade port Techzar, or Highway Star, which people said ripped off Out Run
    74AnonymousSep 18, 2026 23:02
    Re: #48
At first they had the same image as Enix — a PC game maker
    49AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:35
There was also that one that ripped off Space Harrier, right
    57AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:46

Was it 'Tobidase Daisakusen' ('Operation Jump Out')?
The one you could use 3D glasses with

    Re: #49
Well, Space Harrier itself already has that thing where the enemies look like Gundam's Dom mobile suit standing up like a tortoise
    51AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:38
Got this as a kid with nothing else to play, so I played it nonstop, but never once managed to clear it

    Re: #51
Pretty much every game that shows up on those retro-game walkthrough channels on YouTube is a bad game, honestly.

Most people probably saw a clear video of this on YouTube for the first time too.

    Background and Discussion Points

King’s Knight was one of the early titles Square put out in 1986, years before it would go on to create Final Fantasy, with music composed by Nobuo Uematsu. At the time, Square was still mostly known for porting PC games and putting out titles that resembled other companies’ work — this release predates the studio’s full pivot to RPGs. As a result, despite its fantasy-style box art, the game itself leaned heavily toward shooting-style action, and the thread kept circling back to the same disconnect: “I rented it expecting an RPG and it turned out to be a shooter.” The thread also pointed out a mechanic where the final stage can’t be cleared unless all the characters have been gathered together, suggesting this was a game that was genuinely hard to fully grasp without a manual or strategy guide back then. Note that despite the similar name, it’s unrelated to King’s Field (from From Software).
