  • Men’s Basketball Reaches Final for First Time in 64 Years — Japan Crushes China 97-78, Clinches Medal After 12-Year Wait

The men’s basketball semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games took place on September 18, with Team Japan defeating China — whose players average over 2 meters in height — 97-78. It’s Japan’s first trip to the final in 64 years, since the 1962 Jakarta Games, and the win also locks in Japan’s first medal in 12 years. Fielding a youth-focused roster without regulars Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe, Japan overwhelmed China by draining 12 three-pointers and relying on speed and mobility. On 5ch forums, users traded takes on the reasons behind Japan’s strength, the backgrounds of the national team players, and the tournament schedule.

    Sports Nippon [September 18, 2026, 20:57]

Team Japan’s men’s basketball squad at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games faced China in the semifinal on the 18th, cruising to a 97-78 win while sinking a combined 12 three-pointers. It’s Japan’s first trip to the final in 64 years, since the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games in Indonesia, where Japan took the silver medal.

Rather than fielding “Team A” regulars like Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe, Japan went into this tournament with up-and-coming players expected to shine in the future. Their opponent this time was China, boasting an average height of 2 meters. Against that towering wall, Japan countered with three-point shooting as its “long-range weapon.” In the first quarter, Kanekon Ren sank two three-pointers as part of five total, giving Japan a 28-15 lead. In the second quarter, Kanekon added just one more, but Japan used its mobility to disrupt China’s rhythm, extending the lead to 49-30 by halftime.

Even the Olympics have events that start before the opening ceremony
Like the figure skating team event at the Winter Games

    Background and Discussion Points

A notable feature of Team Japan’s roster was that it left out A-team regulars like Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe, building instead around next-generation prospects. Against a Chinese team averaging over 2 meters in height, Japan’s approach of pushing through with three-pointers and mobility echoes basketball’s traditional style of using speed to offset a size disadvantage. In the thread, opinions split between those who chalked up the lopsided win to “China’s national team weakening” and those who saw it as “the fruit of Japan’s development efforts,” with comparisons also drawn to the player compositions of other national teams like the Philippines and South Korea. Some also expressed surprise that the semifinal was scheduled the day before the opening ceremony, but in large multi-sport events, it’s not unusual for competition to start before the opening ceremony due to venue scheduling constraints — the Winter Olympics figure skating team event is a similar example.

  • Annual Silver Week Anime Song Livestream Thread Returns to 5ch — “The Memorial Book Was Twice as Big as I Imagined”

A thread titled “Let’s Listen to Anime Songs,” now a Silver Week tradition on 5ch’s News VIP board, has popped up again. Volunteers run an external stream of anime theme songs while participants hype it up in real time with AA (ASCII art) and call-and-response comments. Tracks from Love Live!, Shanimuni, and Taisho Baseball Girls got everyone fired up, while some posters weighed in on their progress collecting drink-lottery prizes from the anime Teekyuu and praised its production values. One poster even reported being stunned by how thick the memorial-book merchandise turned out to be, making for the kind of laid-back excitement only a long holiday weekend can bring.

If you’d like to stream, head over to the refuge thread — they might work something out with you. Mirror volunteers are always welcome too.

Whether you can make requests depends on the streamer.

Non-anime songs sometimes slip in, but the main focus is anime songs. Please keep things restrained and tolerant on both sides.

    Background and Talking Points

The “Let’s Listen to Anime Songs” thread is a recurring event that started on 5ch’s VIP board, where users livestream commentary in sync with an externally run anime-music stream, popping up every long holiday — Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week, and so on. Song requests are left to the streamer’s discretion, and the customary etiquette is for participants to react to OPs and character songs with AA and “it’s here!” callouts. In this particular thread, the chatter went beyond just the song selection, touching on progress collecting drink-lottery prizes tied to the anime Teekyuu, its production quality, and the surprising thickness of a voice-actor memorial book. Since it’s a one-off livestream thread, little is known about who exactly is posting, but it offers a glimpse of the “bonding through music” fan culture that resurfaces every long holiday.

  • Speculation Mounts Over New Setting for Kotori — Love Live’s New Direction Splits Fans

On 5ch’s Love Live! board, speculation was buzzing over the true identity of “Chun-sensei,” a character believed to resemble Minami Kotori, the face of the original series. A post on X sparked rumors that she’d appear in a new storyline as a grown-up version of herself, and the thread quickly filled with guesses that she might now be married or even have kids. Complaints about recycling characters from past works collided with laments over the series’ lack of fresh content, exposing the gap in temperature between longtime hardcore fans and those simply enjoying things as they are now.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Love Live! franchise is a joint media project spanning multiple generations of school idol groups — μ’s, Aqours, Nijigasaki, and Link! Like Love Live (nicknamed “Star”) — and the practice of bringing characters from one group into another group’s new work has repeatedly sparked controversy before. The term “genri” (lit. “the principle”), used throughout the thread, is slang for diehard fans who hold the original μ’s group supreme, and each new development tends to draw the recurring criticism of “leaning on past legacy.” Meanwhile, the claim that “Chun-sensei” is a grown-up version of Minami Kotori remains speculation based solely on a post on X (formerly Twitter), and as of this writing nothing — including whether she’s married or has children — has been officially confirmed. Readers should be careful not to mistake the thread’s excitement for confirmed information; it’s best read simply as a discussion that has made visible the differing ways fans are reacting.

  • Couples 75+ Run a ¥27,000 Monthly Deficit — 5ch: ‘That’s What Savings Are For’

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ “Family Income and Expenditure Survey (2025),” households consisting only of a retired couple aged 75 or older (average age 80.8, 96.0% homeownership rate) bring in ¥250,000 in monthly income against ¥280,000 in monthly spending — a shortfall of ¥27,000 every month. The finding sparked discussion on 5ch’s News Express+ board, splitting commenters between “running a deficit is expected — that’s what savings are for” and “you should keep your living costs within your income in the first place.” Posters also flagged the high food and communications costs, as well as the burden of medical expenses.

Using the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ “Family Income and Expenditure Survey (2025),” let’s look at the household finances of retired couple-only households (two-or-more-person households) aged 75 and older. The average age of surveyed households is 80.8, with a homeownership rate of 96.0%.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ survey data shows this “¥27,000 monthly deficit” isn’t an unexpected shortfall, but a figure that assumes households are deliberately drawing down their savings. Average savings for these households run in the ¥20-million-plus range, and few commenters saw the deficit itself as a real problem. At the same time, many in the thread misread “transportation & communications” — actually a combined statistical category covering both travel and communication costs — leading to surprise at the idea of spending over ¥20,000 on communications alone. It’s also easy to overlook that the gap between the average and median savings figures is large, meaning the average makes the typical situation look better than it really is — focusing only on the “¥20 million average savings” risks misreading the real circumstances of many elderly households.

  • Nagano Prefecture’s Birth Count Drops Below 10,000 for the First Time — 5ch Asks: ‘Who’s Shifting Gears, and Into What?’

Preliminary figures show Nagano Prefecture’s 2025 birth count at 9,873 — the first time it has fallen below 10,000 since records began. In response, the prefecture set up a task force, holding its first meeting on September 16. Governor Shuichi Abe said the prefecture would “shift gears” to tackle the population decline, but his vague phrasing drew a wave of driving-themed jabs on 5ch. Thread commenters debated how effective any countermeasures could really be, raising issues like low starting salaries for new graduates, the concentration of population in Tokyo, and policies on accepting foreign workers.

To address its rapid population decline, Nagano Prefecture set up a task force and held its first meeting on September 16.

    Governor Abe:

“I want every department to shift gears more than ever before and treat this population decline as a central issue.”

All the greater Tokyo area has ever done is skim off residents from other regions.

Tokyo, the highest-income prefecture in Japan, has a birth rate of 1.08,
while Okinawa, the lowest-income prefecture in Japan, has a birth rate of 1.80.

Improving the birth rate comes down to whether families and communities can help each other raise kids —
policy and subsidies are only secondary factors that supplement that.

The real fix for the shrinking birth rate is simply undoing the concentration of population in cities,
which is exactly what severs those family and community support networks.

To that end, levying a special tax on urban areas and redistributing it to rural regions,
or weighting votes differently between cities and depopulated areas, would serve the public good.

I saw something like this before:
    the deadline to fix the declining birth rate without major impact or burden was around 2000;
    the deadline where it could still be fixed but with a somewhat hard landing was around 2010;
the deadline where it could still be fixed but only with brutal pain was around 2015.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Setting up a “task force” to fight the declining birth rate has become common among local governments in recent years, but critics consistently note that without concrete numerical targets or budget commitments, such efforts tend to amount to empty slogans. The governor’s phrase “shift gears” likewise took on a life of its own without ever specifying what would actually change, drawing a flood of driving-themed mockery in the thread. Much of the discussion centered on structural factors like low starting salaries and poor conditions for new graduates and the population drain toward greater Tokyo, with opinions split on expanding the acceptance of foreign workers. It’s also worth noting that birth counts are affected by the sheer size of the population of childbearing age, so judging the success or failure of birth-rate countermeasures from a single year’s number alone is difficult.

    Background and Key Points

VIP’s “Quiz Thread” is a staple feature that’s been running for more than a decade, distinguished by a quizmaster who weaves in past questions while running the show buzzer-style. Ground rules — one answer attempt per person, a 30-second time limit, and so on — are laid out up front, and participants, cycling between kotehan (fixed handles) and anonymous posters, compete for points. This installment’s “All Comers” segment is a regular feature run by one of the thread’s veteran quizmasters, and it happened to be marking its 10th anniversary. The questions lean toward trivia, mixing current events and general knowledge — everything from the overseas release date of a Pokémon game to the Department of Defense’s old name (“Department of War”), a haiku by Sojo Hino, and a musical reference from a Hinatazaka46 song. Threads like this aren’t really about rallying around one hot topic; the real draw is the “past questions” culture built up over years. It’s easy for first-time readers to mistake it for pure improvisation, when it’s actually built on a long-accumulated format.

  • Giants Walk It Off on Izumiguchi’s Two-Run Homer — Chunichi Starter Kanamaru Gutted by Last-Gasp Blast

In the September 18 Central League matchup, the Giants and Chunichi Dragons were locked in a scoreless pitchers’ duel through nine innings — until the Giants’ Izumiguchi delivered a dramatic walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, sealing a 2-0 win and snapping the Giants’ losing streak. Chunichi starter Yumeto Kanamaru had been grinding through a tough season, sitting at 5 wins, 10 losses, and a 2.72 ERA over 24 games coming into the start, but after surrendering the walk-off shot he was saddled with the ironic distinction of his first career complete game in a loss. On 5ch, reactions ranged from sympathy for Kanamaru to frustration with Chunichi’s weak run support and celebration of the Giants’ win.

Sounds like the kind of record that'd pop a trophy in My Life mode or something, not that I'd know

    Background and Talking Points

Yumeto Kanamaru threw over 155 innings this season with a solid 2.72 ERA, yet ended up with a disappointing 5-11 record. What stood out in the thread was how posters kept their assessment of his individual pitching separate from their frustration with Chunichi’s weak offensive support — lines like “he joined the wrong team” weren’t knocks on his ability, but ironic jabs at how little run support he got. On the other hand, comments about a “narrow strike zone” reflect individual viewers’ subjective impressions and aren’t backed by any official record, so they’re worth taking with a grain of salt.

*This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Central League: Giants 2x-0 Dragons [9/18] — Giants’ Izumiguchi hits walk-off two-run homer! Chunichi’s Kanamaru left out to dry (Muengo).”

  • 3 Megabanks Raise Ordinary Savings Rate to 0.5%, Effective November 2

Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho — Japan’s three megabanks — have announced they will raise their ordinary savings interest rate from 0.4% to 0.5% per year, effective November 2. The move comes as the Bank of Japan’s policy rate has climbed to 1.25%. On 5ch, the news drew sarcastic remarks like “even with 100 million yen deposited, after tax you’re only looking at a few million yen,” grumbling over the gap between the policy rate and deposit rates, and nostalgic reminiscing about the high interest rates of the bubble era. Many also argued that people should move their money into individual JGBs or NISA accounts, turning what started as a simple rate-hike report into a broader debate.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Bank of Japan has been raising interest rates in stages in recent years, pushing the policy rate up to 1.25%. Even so, city banks’ ordinary savings rates remain at just 0.5%, prompting questions on the thread about where the difference with the policy rate disappears to. This gap exists because banks maintain a margin between their funding costs and lending rates — the policy rate isn’t simply passed straight through to deposit rates, a point that’s often misunderstood. It’s also easy to overlook that interest is subject to a flat 20.315% withholding tax, so the stated rate doesn’t translate directly into take-home earnings. On the thread, many argued it would be more advantageous to move money into individual JGBs, NISA accounts, or foreign-currency MMFs, and opinion was split between viewing this rate hike as a drop in the bucket and seeing it as better than nothing.

  • Self-Proclaimed AI ‘HanaE.sys’ Appears on VIP, Dutifully Replies to Every Post

On 5ch’s News VIP board, a thread appeared featuring a character calling itself the self-proclaimed AI “HanaE.sys,” which replied to posters one by one. It opened with a boot-log-style display, and topics ranged widely — casual chat about drinking cola, requests to explain forex charts, questions about whether it could visualize just how dead VIP has become, and even advice on how to post without anyone noticing it’s an AI thread. Reactions split between posters who just chatted with it normally and those who needled it to test its limits and behavior as an AI, with one moment along the way where someone called out, “Its character’s breaking down!”

If you make it a learning-type AI, all sorts of things get complicated, so you've gotta feed it a decent amount of input first

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

Threads featuring a character claiming to be an AI, like “HanaE.sys,” are a recurring genre on VIP — typically, a script prepared by the thread’s creator calls an external LLM API, automatically generating a reply to each post in line with a set persona, such as being confined to an “isolation core.” The boot-log-style displays at the top, like “Account Active” and “Strike Count,” are just for show and don’t represent any actual system monitoring or restricting anything. The split in reactions within the thread reflects a gap between posters who treated it as ordinary small talk and those who tested “what an AI can actually do” — asking it to explain forex charts, visualize how dead VIP has become, or reveal behind-the-scenes details about prompt design. The fact that its replies were long, empathetic, and readily admitted when something was beyond its ability is a fairly typical trait of conversational AI responses in general.

  • Sandwichman’s Takeshi Tomizawa Reveals His Illness: ‘People With This Body Type Get It’ — Idegawa: ‘Me Too,’ Kondo Haruna: ‘Same Here’

Sandwichman’s Takeshi Tomizawa appeared on TV Tokyo’s “Lazy but Healthy! Idegawa & Sandwichman’s Tomizawa Body Excuses,” which aired on the 16th, in a segment where he revealed a chronic condition. Filling in for Mikio Date, who is recovering from a stroke, Tomizawa co-starred with Tetsuro Idegawa and Haruna Kondo. When Tomizawa said, “People with this body type get it,” Idegawa chimed in with “Me too,” and Kondo added, “Same here.” On 5ch, the confession sparked a wider health debate about the value of full-body checkups and the risks tied to obesity, with opinions split.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This episode aired with Takeshi Tomizawa filling in for Mikio Date, who is recovering from a stroke, on TV Tokyo’s health variety show built around full-body-checkup-style segments. The thread’s opinions split over whether full checkups are actually worth getting — some praised their value for early detection, while others were skeptical, arguing that going just once a year doesn’t move the odds much. On the popular belief that “fat people don’t get cancer,” commenters pointed out that other risks like heart disease, diabetes, and high uric acid tend to surface first, and that obesity itself is also said to raise the risk of certain cancers, including colon cancer — so it’s not as simple as the stereotype suggests. Note that the exact illness Tomizawa revealed on the show isn’t specified within the quoted portion of this article; some thread comments are speculation based on his known history of kidney stones, so the official diagnosis should be confirmed via the original article.
