  • Average Price of 5kg of Rice Falls Back Into the ¥2,000s for First Time in 2 Years — 5ch: ‘Well, Rice Did Get Cheaper’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Newsflash+ board after the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that the average retail price of 5kg of rice had fallen back into the ¥2,000 range for the first time in two years. Rice prices had kept climbing in recent years — at one point reaching the high ¥3,000s for 5kg — so while many in the thread welcomed the price drop, opinions clashed over how low farmers’ shipping prices had gotten and how wholesalers who’d hoarded stock during the price surge were handling the situation. The discussion also spilled over into criticism of the minister in charge of agricultural policy.

    Background and Talking Points

Retail rice prices have been climbing since 2024 amid shortages caused by extreme summer heat and supply-chain bottlenecks, at one point reportedly reaching the high ¥3,000s to around ¥4,000 for 5kg. This time, as new-crop rice shipments have ramped up, prices have fallen back into the ¥2,000 range for the first time in two years — welcome news for household budgets. At the same time, the thread also saw claims that farmers’ shipping prices (one post cited roughly ¥9,000 per 60kg) don’t cover production costs, highlighting a divide between “consumers welcoming lower prices” and “farmers struggling to stay in business.” There was also criticism of wholesalers who held onto old-crop stock during the price surge, as well as questions about the competence of the minister overseeing agricultural policy. That said, it’s worth noting that the specific figures for shipping prices and any talk of the minister’s resignation are based on hearsay and speculation within the thread, and have not been officially confirmed.

  • Taiyo Sugiura Stunned by Meal Costs on Family-of-7 Hawaii Trip — “The Weak Yen Is Brutal,” Fans Say

TV personality Taiyo Sugiura is making waves after revealing on his YouTube channel the meal costs from his family’s trip to Hawaii this summer — all seven of them. Lunch for six reportedly ran close to $200, and dinner nearly hit $1,000, prompting viewers to comment “the weak yen is brutal” and “that’s insane.” On 5channel, opinions split between blaming the weak yen for the high costs and pointing out that Hawaii itself is one of the priciest destinations even within the US — with the episode where they switched to cooking their own meals partway through the trip also fueling discussion.

Taiyo Sugiura Stunned by Meal Costs on First-Ever Hawaii Trip With All 7 Family Members — Viewers Shocked Too: “Seriously, the Weak Yen Is Brutal lol” “That’s Insane!”

TV personality Taiyo Sugiura looked back on this summer’s Hawaii trip in a YouTube video update posted by the 18th, sharing a startling story about the weak yen.

Sugiura married Nozomi Tsuji — a former member of Morning Musume turned TV personality — in June 2007. The couple have five children: their eldest daughter and influencer Noa (born November 2007), eldest son Seia (born December 2010), second son Sora (born March 2013), third son Koa (born December 2018), and their second daughter and fifth child, Yumea, born in August last year.

Look, all these idiots keep screaming 'weak yen, weak yen,' but the average USD/JPY rate over the past 30 years is actually 125-130 yen. Right now we're only about 20% above that average. People are saying 160,000 yen is because of the weak yen, but even at the historical average it'd still run over 130,000 yen. That's expensive to begin with, lol. And by the way, back when the rate dropped below 110 yen and the yen got strong during those same 30 years, everyone was freaking out saying 'the strong yen is terrible!' lol
    20AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:25

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

At around 150 yen to the dollar, today’s rate is roughly 20% weaker than the 30-year USD/JPY average of 125-130 yen — meaning it’s arguably less a “historic anomaly” and more a swing back toward the norm. That said, as commenters on the thread pointed out, Hawaii is one of the most expensive regions even within the US, and post-pandemic inflation across the US and Europe compounds the issue, so the exchange rate alone doesn’t explain the high costs. Opinions on the thread split between blaming the weak yen and simply pointing to Hawaii’s high prices, and pinning it on the yen alone risks missing the bigger picture. It’s also worth noting that with meals reportedly running around $1,000 for six people in a single sitting, the Sugiura family may simply be making high-end choices regardless of the exchange rate — though the article alone doesn’t make that clear.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Taiyo Sugiura Stunned by Meal Costs on First-Ever Hawaii Trip With All 7 Family Members — Viewers Shocked Too: “Seriously, the Weak Yen Is Brutal lol” “That’s Insane!”“

  • Yuji Oda: ‘If They Ask Me to Do a Sequel Drama, I’ll Do It’ — 5ch Reacts: ‘He’s Mellowed Out’

On a Fuji TV special aired September 18, Yuji Oda was asked whether he’d accept an offer to appear in a sequel drama to “Bayside Shakedown” (Odoru Daisousasen), and answered instantly: “Of course.” The same day saw the release of the franchise’s first new film in 14 years, “N.E.W.S.: Dash Through the Metropolis!” On 5ch, users debated the film’s quality with rankings like “1>2>this one>>>>>>4>3>Muroi,” with some saying it wasn’t as bad as they’d feared. Plenty of posts also speculated about what comes after Muroi and Sumire’s exits from the story, and how Aoshima’s arc will ultimately wrap up. There was also surprise at how Oda — once famously reluctant to do promotional appearances — now shows up himself on morning shows and in FOD streaming ads.

Yuji Oda asked, “If Fuji TV asked you to appear in a sequel drama to ‘Bayside Shakedown,’ would you accept?” — instantly answers, “Of course.”

Actor Yuji Oda appeared on the Fuji TV special “Kono Sekai wa Ichi Dafuru: ‘Bayside Shakedown’ — The Top 10 Most Moving Scenes That Touched 10,000 Hearts! 2-Hour Special” (Friday, 9 p.m.), which aired on the 18th.

He spoke passionately about hot-blooded detective Shunsaku Aoshima — the character he has played for 29 years — leading up to that same day’s release of the popular series’ first new film in 14 years, “Bayside Shakedown N.E.W.S.: Dash Through the Metropolis!” (directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro).

“Bayside Shakedown” began as a 1997 TV drama and grew into a franchise spanning theatrical films 1 and 2, a Muroi-focused spin-off, “THE MOVIE 3,” and “FINAL” — this new film arrives 14 years after the previous entry. The ranking used as a comparison point in the thread, ‘1>2>this one>>>4>3>Muroi,’ is just one poster’s personal opinion, not an official box-office or critical ranking, so it should be read with that caveat. Likewise, Oda’s “of course” remark was simply an instant answer to a hypothetical question on a TV special — it doesn’t mean a sequel drama has been officially greenlit. On the exits of major characters like Muroi and Sumire from the story, posters in the thread pointed out that their deaths were never explicitly confirmed on screen, so the actual on-screen depiction doesn’t necessarily settle the matter. Oda, long known for avoiding location interviews and promotional appearances, has more recently been appearing himself on morning shows and in FOD streaming ads — a shift in his own stance that came up as a topic across multiple replies.

  • Hiroshima Carp Face Mass Exodus as Morishita, Tokoda, Sakakura and Other Core Players Hit Free Agency

Core Hiroshima Carp players Morishita, Tokoda, and Sakakura have all become eligible for free agency, sparking discussion on 5ch about the possibility of several of them leaving for other teams at once. Under NPB’s FA system, signing an A- or B-ranked free agent requires the signing team to hand over compensation talent, so the debate has also turned to which clubs might actually make a move. Opinions in the thread were split between those blaming the team’s low salary levels and those saying the players are simply past their peak, with plenty of criticism aimed at front-office management as well. The thread also brought up Sakakura’s repeated controversial remarks and the team’s official social media posts.

    Yeah, that came out wrong.
I wonder if he could go the distance if they spaced out his starts a bit.

    Background and Key Points

Under NPB’s free agency system, players are ranked A, B, or C based on the previous season’s performance, and signing an A-ranked free agent away from another team requires the signing club to provide compensation (returning part of its roster). Morishita, Tokoda, and Sakakura, the players at the center of this discussion, are believed to be ranked B or higher, which is why the thread’s “we want them, but it’s not worth the cost” reaction reflects this compensation system. The thread frames this as multiple players hitting free agency at once, but whether all three actually leave depends on their own decisions and negotiations — at this stage it remains speculation, not confirmed fact. Opinions split along two lines: some blame the team’s low salary levels, others argue the players are simply past their prime, with recurring criticism of front-office management (the operating style of the Matsuda family business that owns the club) as well. It’s also worth noting the discussion mixes in unrelated controversies — like Sakakura’s repeated comments blowing up online and the team’s official account’s AI-image mishap — which color perceptions of both the players and the front office.

  • JICA Notifies All Afghan Staff of Termination: ‘Being Discarded Over a Single Piece of Paper Is Unacceptable’

The Tokyo Shimbun reports that JICA has notified all Afghan staff stationed at its Kabul office that their employment contracts will be terminated at the end of September. Staff at the office have handled on-the-ground work for Japan’s ODA projects, such as infectious disease prevention and agricultural water infrastructure, but they warn that losing this affiliation could expose them to persecution by the Taliban government. On 5ch, opinions were divided: some argued that an employment relationship should be recognized even without a written contract, while others raised concerns about the need for evacuation support and the diplomatic cost of abandoning local partners.

Not refugee status in Japan, but evacuation support to a safe neighboring country — that sounds like a reasonable compromise.

That said, the idea that JICA's aid work keeps them safe because the Taliban still needs it, but that quitting would suddenly get them persecuted as "associates of a foreign government," doesn't quite add up.

If working for JICA actually benefited the Taliban too, then don't go persecuting people over it.

That's not really plausible — it's probably more like "let me work for that nice, wealthy country that's helping Afghanistan" (that kind of image).
If anything, the real risk is falling victim to money-motivated crime from the bottom rung of society, nothing to do with the Taliban.

The US does this a lot in the Middle East, but abandoning local partners genuinely comes back to bite you down the line.
Even if you don't want them clinging to you forever, the best approach is to arrange a move to a third country or otherwise let them go on good terms, rather than just tossing them aside.
If cooperating with you just gets you discarded in the end, nobody will cooperate anymore, good guy or bad guy alike.

This has already become a news story, and diplomatically, this is about as bad as it gets.
    207AnonymousSep 18, 2026 22:31
    Re: #202
Are they really "partners," though? Given the nature of the work, they're just local staff hired for pay — so if there's no budget, isn't letting them go reasonable?
I'd get it if the Japanese government were negotiating resource deals with Afghanistan, but that's not happening — they're just a drain on money.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

JICA is the independent administrative agency that carries out Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), and its Kabul office has continued to support humanitarian projects — such as infectious disease prevention and agricultural water infrastructure — through the practical work of its locally hired staff, even after the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. In the US and Europe too, the treatment of local partners such as interpreters and office staff has repeatedly become a diplomatic issue during withdrawals from occupation or deployment, and this contract termination is an extension of that same pattern. The headline’s phrase “a single piece of paper” reflects staff frustration that an employment relationship which had largely functioned on a verbal, informal basis was ended with nothing more than a single notice. Within the thread, opinions were divided over whether a written employment contract existed and over the merits of severance pay and evacuation assistance, while some comments conflated the issue with debates over the tax burden of people already granted refugee status in Japan — a separate matter from the Kabul-based staff being let go here, and one that should be read as distinct.

  • Men’s Focus on ‘Earning Power’ Doubles to 56%, Women’s Focus on ‘Looks’ Now Matches Men’s Level — Kazuhisa Arakawa

According to a survey by Japan’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, the share of men who want “economic power” in a marriage partner has doubled from 26.7% in 1992 to 55.6% in 2025. Drawing on these results, Kazuhisa Arakawa points out that the emphasis on “economic power” — long considered a female trait — has grown stronger among men too, while the share of women who prioritize a partner’s “looks” has also risen, narrowing the gap in attitudes between the sexes. In a 5channel thread, posters traded frank opinions and jabs from both the male and female side over height and income benchmarks, with views split on whether it’s right to pick a partner by checklist at all.

I'm a matchmaking pro. The male equivalent of a woman's breasts is muscle. Women are generally more popular if they're well-endowed, but not having that isn't a huge deduction. Height works differently for men, though — being short is a major deduction. The physical trait that's not a big deduction if missing, but boosts your popularity if you have it, is muscle.

It's an era where women are also expected to bring youth, looks, and economic power.

That said, youth is relative too.

In other words, the most rational pairing is a guy in his late 40s to 50s whose income has climbed to a decent level of economic power, matched with a woman in her 30s to early 40s.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Japan’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research surveys unmarried men and women every five years, and the shifting criteria people seek in a spouse have long been tracked as a fixed-point data series. The numbers cited here show that the share of men who place importance on or consider “economic power” has doubled over roughly 30 years — but note this reflects “important/considered” responses, not “essential” ones, so it doesn’t necessarily mean this is the top priority in actual partner selection. The thread tended to fixate on easily quantified conditions like height and income, but the heart of Arakawa’s point is the shift itself: men’s and women’s attitudes converging. The backdrop to this stronger emphasis on conditions likely includes structural economic changes around marriage, such as the rise of dual-income households and a climbing lifetime unmarried rate — though those structural factors barely came up in the thread.

  • Japan’s GDP Per Capita Plunges from 2nd to 43rd in the World — 5ch: ‘Pathetic How Japanese People Make Excuses’

Data claiming that Japan’s international ranking for nominal GDP per capita (in US dollars) has fallen from around 2nd in the world to somewhere in the 40s became a hot topic on 5ch. Since rankings like this are calculated in dollar terms, they tend to drop as the yen weakens — meaning factors other than an actual change in living standards are also at play. In the thread, opinions clashed over whether this indicator is even a valid yardstick for a country’s prosperity in the first place, with users pointing out that the working-age population is thin due to aging, and that in countries with large wealth gaps, the average doesn’t reflect reality. The discussion gradually expanded to cover consumer behavior topics like the rights and wrongs of scalpers and the shift toward ‘cheapness-seeking.’

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s nominal GDP per capita (converted to US dollars) was around 2nd in the world circa 2000, but due to subsequent low growth and the rapid depreciation of the yen, recent estimates put it in the 40s. Because dollar-denominated rankings are heavily affected by exchange rates, it’s easy to overlook that “the ranking dropped” doesn’t mean “Japan suddenly got poorer” so much as “the yen’s value against the dollar fell.” In the thread, opinions were divided over whether this metric is even valid to begin with (the working-age population is thin due to aging, and in wealth-gap-heavy countries like China the average conceals the reality), and the discussion expanded into consumer and social topics like the rights and wrongs of scalpers, the shift toward cheapness-seeking behavior, and Japan’s aging, shrinking population. Some political oversimplification (attacks on ruling-party supporters, etc.) crept in too, but this article is built around the parts of the discussion that hold up as points about how to interpret economic indicators.

  • Shigure Ui × mezzo piano Collab Canceled After Backlash Over Signature Song ‘Loli God’

The collaboration between VTuber Shigure Ui and children’s clothing brand “mezzo piano” was canceled just before its planned October launch. The move came amid growing backlash on social media over the fact that Shigure Ui’s signature song “Loli God” deals with lolicon themes. On 5ch, opinions split: some questioned why a children’s clothing brand ever greenlit the project and worried about damage to the brand’s image among the parents who make up its customer base, while others argued that canceling the collab was an overreaction.

On the 17th, coly Inc. announced it was canceling the “Shigure Ui × mezzo piano” collaboration between illustrator and VTuber Shigure Ui and junior apparel brand “mezzo piano.” The event had been scheduled for October, but the collab had already drawn a variety of reactions on social media.

The project was set to release merchandise featuring newly drawn artwork to commemorate the collaboration, with pop-up shops planned at Nagoya PARCO from October 3–12, SHIBUYA109 Shibuya from October 15–25, and Shinsaibashi PARCO from October 17–25.

coly, the company behind the project, announced the same day, “Due to various circumstances, we have decided to cancel [the event].” The company apologized, saying, “We deeply apologize for the great inconvenience this has caused our customers,” and added, “To customers who had been considering attending, we are truly sorry for this last-minute notice.” It also stated, “All applications submitted for this event will be automatically canceled. We once again apologize for the inconvenience caused to those who had applied.”

    Re: #76
What they were actually trying to sell with this collab was acrylic stands and one-size adult tracksuits, so I don't think existing customers were even on their radar — the real goal was to sell to otaku.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Loli God” is known as Shigure Ui’s signature song, and while its lolicon-themed content has actually been part of its appeal, there have long been voices raising concerns about the song’s title and content too. Because this particular collaboration partner was a children’s clothing brand aimed at preschoolers and elementary schoolers, the gap between the two images drew renewed attention. The thread split over two questions: whose judgment call was really at fault — the side that proposed the collab or the side that accepted it — and whether the criticism was actually aimed at VTuber fans in general or at the legitimacy of the project itself. Some posts claim there have been death threats, but neither the truth of this nor any details of harm could be confirmed within the thread, and it hasn’t been covered in news reports either.

Wait, the one-time cash withdrawal limit dropped to ¥300,000? What do you do if you need a large amount of cash?

You always see news stories about bank tellers stopping wire-transfer scams at the counter and getting commendations for it, right?
    25AnonymousSep 19, 2026 00:56
You can raise your withdrawal limit by filing paperwork at the counter.
    26AnonymousSep 19, 2026 00:57
Does forgotten ATM cash actually not come back? It's pretty well known that if you take it, you get caught.
    27AnonymousSep 19, 2026 00:58
"The other day"? Like, 10 or 20 years ago?
    29AnonymousSep 19, 2026 00:59
Isn't this basically a 'criminal bait trap'? ATMs always have cameras. An otherwise decent person sees cash just sitting there, grabs it on impulse, and ends up arrested for theft — their whole life ruined.
    31AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:00
It's not 'forgotten money left in the machine,' it's 'left behind' — you guys are skimming way too fast.
    39AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:03
If someone actually took it, they'd be on the ATM's camera, and if she really called the police, it should have led to filing a formal report. If that never happened, Takahata's probably just misremembering.
    42AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:04
    Re: #39
Maybe someone just grabbed the cash and walked off? Even if they're on camera, that doesn't mean anyone knows who they are.
    49AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:07
No way. If the 'forgotten cash' buzzer goes off and the person's already gone, staff come running immediately.

Well, sometimes, yeah — like topping up electronic money.
    57AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:11
So basically, someone snatched the ¥1 million she forgot at the ATM? Would anyone normally do something that gets them caught instantly?
    64AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:15
    Re: #57
If cash or a card is left unclaimed, the ATM automatically sucks it back in. So did someone actually take it? Their face should be on the security camera too.
    59AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:11
Would an ordinary person even be allowed to see that camera footage? And if she did see it, wouldn't the culprit be right there on film? Also, can you even withdraw ¥1 million from an ATM? The default limit alone should be ¥500,000.
    62AnonymousSep 19, 2026 01:15
    Re: #59
Whether the 'left it behind' story is true or not aside, I don't think regular people normally get shown the footage…

Background and key points of this discussion

ATM withdrawal limits per transaction are generally capped at a few hundred thousand yen by financial institutions or by the account holder’s own settings, so withdrawing ¥1 million in one go requires filing paperwork in advance to raise that limit. That’s the backdrop to the thread’s skepticism that “if she really went to the police, there should be a record of a formal report.” As reply #66 points out, Takahata told a similar “left cash behind” story on another program back in 2023 too, suggesting she may have recounted the same anecdote more than once. It’s also easy to overlook that even if someone appears on security camera footage, that doesn’t automatically reveal their name or contact information — so the claim that “footage means an instant arrest” isn’t necessarily true.

*This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “Atsuko Takahata left a large sum of cash behind at an ATM — “I went to the police too. The security camera…” Shingo Murakami: “What happened to that ¥1 million?” Here’s what happened….”

  • Final FFVII Game’s File Size Set to Hit ~200GB — Switch 2 Version Reportedly Around 130GB

At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the final FFVII-series title ‘FFVII Revelation,’ told VGC in an interview that “the game is probably going to be around 200GB.” Despite his caveat that things are still being adjusted, the 200GB figure took on a life of its own — and reactions on 5ch were split as posters weighed the free storage on PS5 versus Switch 2 against microSD card prices, trying to figure out where they’d actually fit the game. Some pointed out that the Switch 2’s 256GB of internal storage really only offers about 230GB of usable space, sparking discussion about how hard it’ll be to keep multiple big titles installed at once.

VGC interviewed series director Naoki Hamaguchi at Tokyo Game Show 2026, asking mainly about the sheer volume of ‘FFVII Revelation.’ According to Hamaguchi, while cautioning that things are still being adjusted, he said: “it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game.”

Honestly, this'll be a breeze on PS5 and PC.

But Switch 2 is gonna be brutal — even at 130GB it'll eat up more than half the internal storage lol

    Re: #2
Bro's PS5 only has 660GB free out of the box
and Genshin Impact alone already eats 200GB of that on PS5
what are you gonna do with the remaining 200GB?
GTA6 won't even fit lol, what about all the other free-to-play games?
Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero are both nearly 200GB too lol
    3AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:28
Can you even keep both FFVII and FFXIV installed on a Switch at the same time?
    6AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:31
    Re: #3
Switch 2 says 256GB but it's really only about 230GB usable, so after installing Revelation you'd have around 100GB left.
    That's seriously tight.

    Re: #8
The Switch 2's real weakness is that even if you buy two 256GB cards for a combined 512GB, say each card has 20GB left over — you still can't install a single 40GB game spread across the two.
You're stuck filling those leftover scraps with small games to make use of them.
The more low-capacity cards you stack up, the more wasted space you end up with.
    9AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:35
If it's over 256GB you'd go "huh?", but under that it's manageable somehow.
    11AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:38

They can't subtract or optimize anything — bigger file size is just righteousness to them.
That's the "Square Enix brain" wall right there.
    12AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:38
I mean, realistically nobody's buying the Switch 2 version anyway, it's the downgraded port.
And as a matter of fact, even Remake and Rebirth only sold around 30,000 copies (on Switch).
    14AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:40
Lol, the Switch 2 version alone effectively costs ¥19,000 once you factor in the storage card.
    16AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:40
Personally, if it's on sale, the Switch 2 version is my only pick.
    17AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:41
The 200GB is probably from having separate cutscenes and textures for each resolution setting, right?
    18AnonymousSep 18, 2026 20:42
A single game eats up 60% of storage on the "latest" (lol) console lmaooo

while the actual fun keeps shrinking.

Haven't played it, but I'm just curious whether they fixed this character's face compared to Rebirth.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 has moved to a new “microSD Express” card standard, which is faster than older microSD cards — and pricier as a result. The figures cited in the thread (around ¥9,000 for 256GB, nearly ¥30,000 for 512GB) reflect this new standard, so they look expensive when compared to old-style SD card pricing. Meanwhile, the fact that the PS5’s usable storage is smaller than its advertised capacity (roughly 660–670GB in practice) also caused some confusion in the thread, such as comments assuming the console had a full 670GB free. The ballooning file sizes aren’t unique to the FFVII series, either — other major titles like Genshin Impact, GTA6, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero have already reached the 150–200GB range, and some posters framed it as an industry-wide trend. One exchange containing derogatory language toward Switch 2 users has been excluded from this writeup.

*This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Final FFVII game’s storage looking like ~200GB, and yeah the Switch 2 version is 130GB.”
