  • ‘No Singing or Dancing, No Rights’ Debate Erupts — 5ch: ‘If You Can Win on Looks, Why Sing at All?’

Is singing and dancing ability essential for an idol, or is good looks alone enough? On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a debate broke out over exactly this question of “skill first or visuals first.” Citing examples like the Sakamichi groups succeeding on a looks-first approach, and the fact that Juice=Juice is currently the only Hello! Project group getting TV appearances, posters weighed in from every angle. The discussion reached a stalemate between the view that skill makes competing on looks unnecessary, and the view that since it’s a job where you’re constantly being watched, there’s no escaping the looks factor.

They're idols — does that stuff even matter?
    2AnonymousSep 19, 2026 09:58
Visuals are what matters most, no question.
    3AnonymousSep 19, 2026 09:58
If you think looks alone are enough, you'd do better becoming an Instagrammer or TikToker.

Just so some idiot could vent their feelings,
    they made this dead-end thread
    on purpose.
    15AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:05
The Sakamichi groups already proved you can pull in fans on visuals alone and get popular even if you're just swaying side to side for the singing and dancing.
    Visuals really are number one.

Sakamichi already lost to Equal Love (=LOVE), though.

Juice=Juice is the only Hello! Project group that's actually made it big, so if you're in Hello! Project, becoming like Juice=Juice is basically your only option.
That's faster than trying to overhaul Hello! Project into something like Sakamichi.

Everyone charging in the same direction and torching the whole field — that's K-pop-style thinking.

Flip side: if you can actually sing and dance, you don't need to win on looks either.
    23AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:09
It's a job where you're constantly being watched, so there's no escaping the fact that looks are part of the competition.

If you line up members with top-tier looks, you can become the kind of idol group that sells out dome tours even while just lip-syncing and swaying back and forth.
    30AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:14
Unlike idol singers of the old days, they're just not good singers.

    Also, today's idols aren't actress-level good-looking — that's exactly why they're doing idol work instead.

    Re: #30
That's just because only the good ones are the ones still around today.
Watch old streams of '8 O'clock! Everybody Gather!' (8時だョ!全員集合) and tons of B- and C-tier idols who vanished almost instantly show up — bad enough that you'll understand exactly why they got dismissed as 'jaritare' (cheap kiddie talent).
Idols from the '90s onward have had lessons since childhood and grown up singing karaoke, so the average skill level today is way higher.
    32AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:18
    Hello! Project, picking dance 40 / singing 90 / looks 40 over dance 90 / singing 60 / looks 80.

    Re: #32
Those totals are different, so that's not even a fair comparison.
    41AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:36
Being able to sing and dance used to be the definition of an idol.
Hello! Project is the one that never rewrote that definition.
Akimoto Yasushi is the one who rewrote it.

Sakamichi idols especially are sold on the single point of having above-average looks,
so the moment a younger talent shows up with the same trait, they're easily replaced and tossed back out into the world with no actual skills to fall back on.
    46AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:40
    Re: #41
Right — and since there's an endless supply of replaceable talent, it's a business model where you gather a ton of them, and the moment one graduates, next.
    43AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:38
That's not really the vibe now, is it?
Back in the Platinum era, fans were strict enough to pick out pitch differences down to an eighth-tone.
    44AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:38
    Re: #43
Juice=Juice right now sings better than the Platinum era or Mobekimasu ever did.
    48AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:42
    Re: #43
    No, that's not true.
These days the correction and mixing tech used for audio and video is on a completely different level from the Platinum/Mobekimasu era.
Looking at footage, the sound mixing back then was far worse than today's bar-event (small live-house show) footage.
Judging by current bar-event footage, today's Juice can't hold a candle to that era.

Platinum, which was genuinely skill-first, was still healthy.
These days — or really since around the 'Wanfoa' era (a specific lineup/period, exact reference unclear) — there's been this trend of praising people who don't actually have much skill.
The problem now is it's basically become 'whoever says it first wins.'
    62AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:00

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This kind of clash between the “skill camp” and the “visuals camp” has come up again and again in the idol industry since the success of the AKB48 family of groups and the Sakamichi series (Nogizaka46, Sakurazaka46, Hinatazaka46). The Sakamichi groups tend to weight their selection criteria toward looks, while Hello! Project has traditionally placed heavy emphasis on developing singing and dancing ability — and the thread’s discussion largely revolved around this contrast between the two models. What split opinion in the thread was whether it’s more sustainable to say “if looks alone can draw an audience, skill isn’t necessary,” or “if you have skill, you don’t have to depend on looks.” That said, this is ultimately just fan impressions on an anonymous message board, and it’s worth noting that no objective figures — like actual attendance numbers or CD sales — were presented in the discussion to back up either side.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Isn’t it kind of a problem that idols are expected to have “no rights” if they can’t sing and dance?“.

  • Angerme’s Sendai Show Leaves 1st-Floor Seats Unsold — 5ch: “First Time I’ve Ever Seen Floor Seats Still Up for Grabs at a Ticket Outlet lol”

On September 19, 2026, a thread appeared on the 5ch “Hello! Project” board about Angerme’s fall hall-tour stop at Sendai Sunplaza Hall. It was sparked by the fact that 1st-floor seats were still available through general ticket outlets — since those seats are normally snapped up during fan-club presales, posters were surprised to see them left over for the general public. The thread went on to compare attendance with Juice=Juice and Morning Musume。’26’s regional shows, which were drawing similar buzz around the same time, and turned into a back-and-forth between fans over whether halls or livehouses are the right-sized venue for each group.

    Background and Key Points

At most Hello! Project group concerts, the majority of seats get claimed through members-only fan-club presale lotteries, and what’s left for general sale through ticket outlets tends to be either the unlucky leftovers or, occasionally, a surprisingly good block that happens to circle back. Because of this, “floor seats are available through general sale” doesn’t necessarily mean the venue has a ton of empty seats overall — a point that’s easy to misread. The attendance comparisons with other groups raised in the thread are also based on fans’ impressions and hearsay rather than official sales figures, so they aren’t a reliable gauge of actual turnout. Given that context, the thread ends up being less about real ticket-sales trends and more about the rivalry between Juice=Juice and Angerme fans taking center stage.

  • 30s Unmarried Rate: Nearly Half of Men Still Single — 5ch Floats a ‘Singles Tax’

A thread introducing data on unmarried rates among people in their 30s appeared on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. The numbers showed 47.3% of men and 34.5% of women aged 30-34 unmarried, and 35.6% of men and 23.1% of women aged 35-39 unmarried, sparking comments like “everyone around me is married, this doesn’t match my experience,” calls for a “singles tax” or “childless tax” to ease the burden on households, and pushback from others branding married people the “losers” instead. The thread also cited reports that the unmarried rate among people in their 30s in Seoul, South Korea, has topped 60%, extending the discussion to how the trend isn’t unique to Japan.

For the older, larger generations, having 3 or more kids was the norm, yet the number has gradually slipped below 2 — isn't that proof plenty of recent couples are only having one?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The rising unmarried rate is a statistic that keeps resurfacing in Japan’s debates over its declining birthrate, and the figures cited in the thread are roughly in line with the government’s official population statistics. The “singles tax” and “childless tax” floated in the thread are not policies actually under consideration — they’re hypothetical funding proposals that often get raised on forums, and it’s worth noting they are not government policy. It’s also easy to conflate the claim that “the birth rate among married couples is close to 2.0” with Japan’s overall total fertility rate (around 1.2) — the former applies only to couples who are already married and is a separate metric. The thread also cited reporting that the unmarried rate among people in their 30s in Seoul, South Korea, has passed 60%, fueling discussion of how the falling birthrate and rising unmarried rate aren’t unique to Japan.

  • New “Bayside Shakedown” Film Splits Opinion Online — 5ch: “Honestly, Better That Eri Fukatsu Wasn’t In It”

The new Bayside Shakedown film has hit theaters, sparking discussion on a 5ch live-commentary thread. According to the thread’s original poster, the movie keeps teasing that Eri Fukatsu will appear, but she never actually shows up on screen — instead, an “AI Waku” recreates his voice to deliver the character’s famous lines. Commenters also noted that the actor cast as Mashita and Yukino’s son (supposedly 21 years old) is actually in his 40s, and that the directing style feels reminiscent of Yuichi Fukuda’s work. Meanwhile, opinions split between praise for the beauty of Eri Fukatsu and Yuki Uchida, and the view that it was actually better she didn’t appear — with the debate centering less on the film’s quality and more on its directing choices and casting.

    1AnonymousSep 19, 2026 08:12
・After endless teasing, Eri Fukatsu never actually shows up. The film keeps hinting she'll appear right up through the end of the credits, but it wraps with Aoshima saying, "Come on, this is where you're supposed to show up."
・An "AI Waku" is born from having Waku's voice "fed into an AI." He delivers his famous lines in a slightly off, uncanny voice — you honestly can't tell if it's meant to be Waku or actor Chosuke Ikariya himself.
・For the role of Mashita and Yukino's son (supposedly 21), they somehow cast a so-so Johnny's talent who's over 40.

    Background and Discussion Points

The Bayside Shakedown franchise has been a popular series since its first theatrical film, released in 2003. Chosuke Ikariya, who played the character Heihachiro Waku, passed away in 2004. The “AI Waku” that became a talking point in the thread appears to be an artificial recreation of his voice — a device that stirs a mix of discomfort and nostalgia in longtime fans. Opinion in the thread split over whether Eri Fukatsu’s absence should be read as a deliberate directorial choice or as teasing designed purely to drive ticket sales. The discussion also branched into broader criticism of Japanese live-action film in general, with complaints about an industry structure where talent goes to manga, novels, anime, and games first, leaving only the leftovers for live action by the time it gets there. That said, it’s worth noting that the specific plot details described here come solely from the thread starter’s account, not from an official announcement or first-hand reporting from a press screening.

  • 41-Year-Old Ronaldo Keeps His Spot on Portugal’s Squad — 5ch: ‘At 41, He’s Still Basically a Rookie’

Portugal’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches was announced on September 18, and 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo was called up once again. Ronaldo made a record sixth World Cup appearance this year, while Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team after the tournament — a contrast in career paths that sparked plenty of discussion. On 5ch, some pointed to signs of decline in a player still being picked past age 40, while others joked that “41 is still young,” citing Modrić (born the same year) and LeBron James (a similar age) as counterexamples. The thread saw a wide range of opinions on age and international retirement.

Portugal’s squad for the UEFA Nations League was announced on the 18th, and forward Cristiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr), who turns 41, was selected once again.

The 72-year-old Jorge Jesus, who now leads a revamped Portugal side, coached Al-Nassr — Ronaldo’s own club — just last season. Ronaldo, who made a record sixth World Cup appearance, had his future been drawing attention after Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, but he will continue his international career for now.

Portugal will face Wales on September 25, Norway on the 28th, Denmark on October 2, and Norway again on October 5.

    Background and Talking Points

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the all-time records for both goals and caps in men’s full internationals, and with this call-up he’ll make his sixth World Cup appearance — also an all-time record. Messi, meanwhile, announced his retirement from the Argentina national team after this year’s tournament, making for a striking contrast between the two stars who defined their era. Within the thread, opinions split between those questioning the quality of his play since moving to Al-Nassr and skepticism about a player in his 40s continuing to be selected at all. At the same time, there was strong pushback defending him — citing Modrić, born the same year, and LeBron James, of a similar age, as evidence he “can still do it” — turning it into a debate that goes beyond simple age arguments. It’s worth noting that national team selection ultimately comes down to the manager’s discretion and doesn’t necessarily track directly with an objective assessment of a player’s ability.

  • New Wildcat Species ‘Tirukayo’ Discovered in Bolivia — First in Over 100 Years

A paper published on September 17 in the U.S. journal Current Biology reports the discovery of “Tirukayo,” a new living cat species — the first such find in more than 100 years — in the cloud forests of Bolivia, South America. Smaller than a housecat, it belongs to the genus Leopardus, the same genus as the ocelot and the Pampas cat (colocolo). On 5channel, threads lit up with a flood of adorable photos, alongside cat-lover tangents ranging from wordplay on the name “Tirukayo” (said to derive from a local language) to the history of cat domestication and the eye-watering prices calico cats fetch these days.

A new species of living cat — the first discovered in more than 100 years — has been found in the cloud forests (mountain forests frequently shrouded in fog and low clouds) of Bolivia, South America. The paper was published on September 17 (local time) in the U.S. journal Current Biology. The new species has been named “Tirukayo.”

Its habitat is the Yungas, cloud forest spanning the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Andes. Its body is smaller than that of a typical housecat. The genus Leopardus comprises small wild cats found throughout the Americas, with well-known examples including the ocelot and the Pampas cat (colocolo).

The research involved Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz, Jonas Lescroart, and others. Nogales-Ascarrunz leads Programa de Investigación de Félidos Bolivia, a Bolivian wild cat research and conservation program. Beyond formally describing the new species, the team also gained new insights into South America’s small “tiger cats” (the jaguar-cat group), and reportedly identified a new subspecies as well.

This cat's gotta be a new species too

    Someone should go investigate

    Background and Talking Points

Finding a new mammal species — especially a mid-sized carnivore — is genuinely rare. As posters in the thread note, the vast majority of species newly described each year are insects or plants; discoveries within a well-known group like cats are uncommon. In this case, “Tirukayo” is an animal local indigenous people had long recognized and referred to by their own name — genetic analysis is what first confirmed it belongs to a lineage separate from known species like the ocelot. Worth noting: the thread’s banter about the name’s etymology is just wordplay that spread online; the paper itself makes no definitive claim about the word’s origin. Bolivia’s Andean cloud forests tend to isolate valleys from one another, and terrain like this is thought to be one factor behind the emergence of such a distinct lineage.

Hello! Project idol group Rosy Chronicle appeared on “Uta-Tube SPORTS FES.,” a music program broadcast on NHK General TV (Tokai region, 3 prefectures) on the morning of September 19. Tied to the opening of the Asian Games, the special aired live from Nagoya alongside Shonan no Kaze, SKE48, Sunplaza Nakano-kun, and Airi Suzuki, with Grampus-kun and Black Doala also making appearances. On the thread, users speculated about why Rosy was chosen for the slot out of all the Hello! Project groups, and buzzed about the fact that Rosy sang live with their own voices, in contrast to the lip-syncing from other groups.

But why Rosy for the Asian Games PR?
    I don't get it
Was Rosy just the Hello! Project group that happened to be free?

    Background and Talking Points

“Uta-Tube” is a long-running NHK Nagoya music program that has, in past years, given one Hello! Project group a guest slot each time — Tsubaki Factory among them. According to the thread, last year’s slot went to Juice=Juice while Kawashima was on hiatus, and this time the slot fell to Rosy Chronicle. Since NHK doesn’t officially explain its casting choices, opinions on the thread were split between “they just happened to be free” and “they were deliberately cast.” The special also doubled as PR for the opening of the Asian Games: while groups with strong local ties, like SKE48 and Shonan no Kaze, leaned into hometown talk, Rosy made their mark less through local connections and more through the performance itself. Whether a group lip-syncs or not is a perennial topic on 5ch, and this time many commenters singled out praise for Rosy singing with their own live vocals. Also worth noting, per the thread, is that the broadcast was local to the Tokai region’s three prefectures, with viewers elsewhere only able to catch it via catch-up streaming.

  • Palworld Loses Players to Copycat Game ‘animo,’ Sales Rank Plummets to No. 102

Palworld, which became a massive hit during its 2024 early access period and had expanded by 2026 into a full release complete with trading cards, has become a hot topic after disappearing from the concurrent-player rankings entirely. On the 5ch “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board, the prevailing theory is that players have been flowing over to the new free-to-play title animo (which carries a Metacritic score in the 70s, roughly the same as Palworld’s), and reports noted that Palworld has also plunged to a global rank of 102 on SteamDB’s sales charts. Since Palworld itself borrowed heavily from ARK-style survival games, opinions were split between those amused by the “one copycat getting devoured by another copycat” irony and those who simply argued the game itself had gotten boring.

For what it's worth, its Metascore is exactly the same as Palworld's, in the 70s.

    121AnonymousSep 19, 2026 10:22
    Re: #114
I played it a bit, and it feels like Palworld turned into a mobile gacha game cranked way up on microtransactions.
There are limits on getting monsters that make it rough if you don't pay, but pay up and you get them instantly.
Whether you think that's fine or garbage is up to you, but personally, I don't think it's fine.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Palworld became an explosive hit during its 2024 early access period, and by 2026 had progressed to a full release along with a card game rollout. Meanwhile, the buzzy new title animo carries a Metacritic score in the same 70s range as Palworld, with the main difference being that it’s free-to-play. In the thread, two different metrics get mixed together — “dropped out of the concurrent-player rankings” and “Steam sales rank 102” — the former referring to a ranking by simultaneous player count, the latter to a sales ranking. As for gameplay, some argue that animo, unlike Palworld’s ARK-style survival approach, leans more toward Pokémon-style collecting and raising, meaning the two aren’t simply interchangeable. The thread’s central disagreement boils down to this: did Palworld genuinely lose out on merit, or did it just get undercut by animo’s free price tag?

  • Angerme’s Hana Goto Sparks Buzz Over Her Looks on TV — 5ch Asks “Who Is This Beauty?”

Hana Goto (Angerme) sparked buzz on social media after appearing on a terrestrial TV program, with 5ch’s Hello! Project thread flooding with comments calling her “too cute.” Some posters lamented that she looked better before changing her bangs, or wished she’d been given more TV exposure back at her peak last year, while others argued her current look is plenty appealing on its own — opinions were split. The discussion also branched into comparisons with fellow members Nina Ebata, Moe Jokoryo, and Nanami Kubota, along with debate over the relationship between terrestrial TV appearances and social media popularity.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Opportunities for Hello! Project members to appear on terrestrial variety shows are limited relative to the group’s overall activity level, so whether a member lands such exposure often gets discussed in relation to their social media reach and popularity. In this thread too, Hana Goto’s TV appearance split opinion — some said she looked more appealing before changing her bangs, while others said her current style holds up just fine. There was also a view shared in the thread — as in the post saying “the era when unpopular members with no social media numbers could get pushed onto TV is over” — that treats TV appearances as proof of ability or popularity. It’s worth noting that these comparisons and evaluations are based purely on the impressions and preferences of 5ch users, and don’t necessarily reflect the member’s actual career achievements or the content of the program itself.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Hana Goto’s looks on terrestrial TV are too cute!!.”

  • UEFA-CONCACAF Joint Nations League Concept Emerges — Is the AFC Interested in Joining Too?

The UK’s Guardian and US outlet ESPN reported on August 21 that UEFA and CONCACAF have begun discussions on creating a joint Nations League featuring all 96 member associations from both confederations. Held once every two years, the competition could launch as early as 2028. Canada’s national team coach has welcomed the idea, saying he’d “love to do it.” On 5ch, users debated speculation about AFC involvement, whether this is a countermove against FIFA-led tournament expansion, and concerns that Japan could end up with fewer opponents for friendly matches if the plan goes ahead.

Could launch as early as 2028

A plan has emerged for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) — both of which already run their own Nations Leagues — to create a joint competition.

According to reports on August 21 from British outlet The Guardian and American outlet ESPN, UEFA and CONCACAF have started discussions on establishing a joint Nations League involving all 96 associations belonging to the two confederations. The tournament is expected to be held every two years, with a possible launch as early as 2028.

UEFA criticized FIFA over its money-grubbing, but
between that and the Champions League overhaul that forced more matches in,
isn't money still their top priority too?
    28AnonymousSep 19, 2026 08:03
    Re: #11
UEFA expanded the Nations League and Champions League in response to requests from clubs and federations that were in financial trouble due to skyrocketing player salaries.
That's why the shift to the new format went smoothly without much confusion.
As a result, you don't hear those stories anymore about clubs or leagues going bankrupt, which used to be a common headline.
Even a country like Italy, which has missed the World Cup multiple times, now has enough financial muscle to make an offer to Pep.
That's a stark contrast to the Japan Football Association, which is so cash-strapped there isn't even a rumor of hiring a foreign coach anymore.

FIFA, meanwhile, expanded the Club World Cup to compete with the Champions League,
but it was a mess early on and there were doubts it would even happen.
That's because FIFA pushed it through unilaterally and couldn't get anyone on board.

UEFA does it for the development of European football, FIFA does it for the money — completely different motivations.
    12AnonymousSep 19, 2026 07:52
No, wasn't this supposed to be about geographic proximity?

    Re: #81
There's also a classification that lumps Australia in with Asia.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

UEFA turned Europe’s international friendlies into a “league format” with the Nations League launched in 2018, significantly boosting broadcast revenue in the process, while CONCACAF has run its own Nations League since 2019. What’s institutionally new this time is that it would be the first framework merging these two continental confederations. On the thread, opinions split between those who see it as a countermove to FIFA’s Club World Cup expansion and the Infantino administration, and those who view it as simply another revenue-expansion scheme. What the thread didn’t touch on is that the authority to set international match windows technically belongs to FIFA, meaning the tournament’s realization would require FIFA’s coordination and approval as a precondition. There were also posts saying “Japan should leave the AFC too,” but while Australia did switch from the OFC to the AFC in 2006, changing confederations is no easy feat given the steep geographic and political hurdles involved.
