  • Chunichi Miss the Playoffs for a 13th Straight Year — 5ch: “NPB Needs to Fix This”

On September 19, 2026, a thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyō G board (a big general sports-chat forum) about the Yokohama–Chunichi “must-win showdown” blew up into a debate over the Central League’s basement race. The centerpiece was a chart showing Chunichi hasn’t made the Climax Series (CS, Japan’s version of the postseason) even once since 2013 — drawing comments like “NPB needs to fix this” about a team that still can’t qualify even though 3 of the league’s 6 teams make the playoffs. The talk also branched into draft-lottery luck and the state of the farm system’s young pitchers, going well beyond a simple standings discussion.

A team at this level still gets to enjoy meaningful pennant-race baseball into late September — the CS format is genius.

Color-wise it's really more like the Blue Jays or the Royals.
And hey, they won the World Series last year, and back in 2015 too.

    Background and Talking Points

The Climax Series (CS) is a postseason format introduced in 2007 that lets each league’s top three regular-season teams advance to a playoff. It’s meant to keep more games meaningful late into the pennant race, but as post #15 notes, gate and TV revenue from the CS mostly flows to the 1st- and 2nd-place teams, so lower-ranked clubs see little financial upside from the system itself. Per the timeline posted in the thread, Chunichi hasn’t reached the CS since their last league title in 2012 — and going 13 straight years without qualifying, in a format where half the league (3 of 6 teams) makes the cut, is a striking number. The thread split between two camps: one arguing the format itself is too lenient, the other that Chunichi is simply bad at roster-building and player development — a divide over whether to blame the system or the front office. Commenters also disagreed on whether Chunichi’s habit of landing high draft picks (a perk of finishing low) is a blessing or just proof of how deep the team’s problems run; the thread reached no consensus either way.

  • Mitsuoka Drops Teaser for New Car — 5ch Reacts: “You Can Tell It’s a Miata Right Away”

Mitsuoka Motor launched a special teaser website on September 17 for a new car it plans to officially unveil on November 26, 2026. The site shows off the “LA1” logo along with images of a two-seat open-top car featuring round quad headlights and a chrome grille, with order applications opening on November 27. The company had already previewed a sketch of a two-door open-top model back in June, continuing its staged rollout of information. On 5ch, users instantly identified the Mazda Miata (MX-5/Roadster) as the base vehicle, and the thread lit up with car-enthusiast chatter — nostalgic comments about past Mitsuoka classics like the “Orochi” and “Zero1,” and debate over just why anyone chooses to buy a Mitsuoka.

On September 17, 2026, Mitsuoka Motor opened a teaser site for a new car it plans to formally announce on November 26 of the same year. It also announced that order applications for the vehicle will begin on November 27.

On June 4 of the same year, the company had released a single sketch depicting the side profile of a two-door open-top model, stating that it would reveal information about the car in stages.

The newly opened teaser site features a logo design marked “LA1,” along with images showing the car’s exterior and color variations. The vehicle is a two-seat open-top car with long-nose, short-deck proportions. Up front it has a chrome-plated grille and bumper along with round quad headlights, while the rear features round combination taillights, a chrome bumper, and a “MITSUOKA” emblem. On the body sides, a white accent color and white-lettered tires stand out.

Well, a classic car in good condition costs a fortune, upkeep is no joke, and it rides and functions worse than a modern car.
But people still love the look and vibe of a classic.
So it's the people with just enough money to be dangerous who buy these —
and that's exactly who Mitsuoka's targeting.

A flat-out Corvette knockoff — guess they've finally dropped all pretense of pride. Being based on the Mazda Miata does give it good bones, though.
This'll sell out for sure, but I feel like real car enthusiasts shouldn't buy it. A knockoff car is something your pride shouldn't allow.

    205AnonymousSep 19, 2026 14:37
    Re: #194
Probably because making a whole new outer panel would mean building the door handles and everything else from scratch too, and costs would balloon.
    207AnonymousSep 19, 2026 14:40
    Re: #194
Leaving the doors alone comes down to crash-test issues and cost if you modify them. If you don't change anything from the base car, crash testing isn't a problem, and swapping just the front/rear fenders and panels doesn't affect structural strength much either — just change the look and bolt on some trim. That's the Mitsuoka formula.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Mitsuoka Motor has historically built two distinct types of cars: models like the “Orochi” and “Zero1,” which use an original chassis, and “arrangement models” (such as the Viewt) that restyle the body panels of existing production cars. This new model appears to fall into the latter category. Thread commenters instantly spotted the Mazda Miata as the base vehicle, and pointed out that the company’s signature approach — reshaping the front and rear styling while leaving the sides, including the door panels, untouched from the donor car — comes down to crash-safety requirements and cost constraints. Commenters also noted that having revenue streams outside of mass-market sales, such as a dominant share of the hearse market, helps explain how the company has stayed in business. As for comparisons to the Corvette, some pointed out that the Miata itself draws on the design of the Lotus Elan, leading to differing views on where homage ends and knockoff begins.

Sharp will roll out its SIM-free smartphone “AQUOS wish6” (SH-M36) starting September 17, at an estimated market price of around ¥50,000.

    ■ Improved durability, AI-based suspicious call warning feature, and more

The AQUOS wish6 is an Android smartphone from Sharp. Its body uses a three-piece construction made up of front glass, frame, and back panel. By incorporating metal parts into the frame, Sharp achieved a slimmer design while improving bending strength by about 20% over the previous model. It also comes with a “Phone Assistant” feature that uses AI to automatically transcribe a caller’s message when you can’t answer the phone.

The real question is which one today's young people will choose once they're old.
If they just keep using iPhone, fine.
But if they switch to Android once they're older, iPhone has no future.
Because we're heading into a future of accelerating hyper-aging and falling birthrates.

It feels expensive because the performance is low.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, guidance from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has effectively banned SIM locks on newly contracted devices since 2021, and most carrier-sold models are now SIM-free as well. Even so, manufacturers still release a separate “SIM-free version,” apparently to distinguish it from carrier models loaded with carrier-specific preinstalled apps and features. The recurring worry in the thread that “4GB of RAM is going to be rough” reflects a real factor: demand from generative AI has driven up DRAM and flash memory prices, and that rising component cost is feeding directly into entry-level phone pricing. It’s also worth noting — something not obvious from the thread itself — that several of the rival entry-level models cited for comparison were misremembered on model number or price, so these side-by-side comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • ‘I Still Want to Drive’: 95% of Seniors Want to Keep Driving — Parents and Kids Split Over the Truth

According to an article by freelance writer Shusuke Sakuta contributed to Merkmal, 95% of senior drivers want to keep driving, while family members are pushing back with “please stop” — leaving parents and children split right down the middle. On 5channel’s News Express+ board, the article sparked a thread full of real-life stories about how to actually get a parent to stop driving and how the licensing system should change. Some posters described giving up their cars after moving to urban areas, while others pointed out that for people in rural areas or elderly people living alone, a car is a lifeline for hospital visits and shopping. Opinions split between blanket age-based license restrictions, hopes pinned on self-driving technology, and simply talking it through as a family.

That'll only be a thing in major metro areas.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, cognitive function tests have been mandatory when renewing driver’s licenses for drivers aged 75 and older since a 2017 law revision — a system already in place to assess individual judgment rather than impose a blanket age cutoff. What divided opinion in the thread was less about that testing framework itself and more about how to strengthen it (license expiration with mandatory retesting, restricting seniors to driver-assist-equipped vehicles, etc.) versus the reality that “life isn’t possible without a car” in rural areas. City dwellers, who can assume robust public transit, tend to encourage surrendering licenses, but for elderly people in rural areas or living alone, a car is a lifeline for hospital visits and shopping — a structural problem that a simple uniform age restriction won’t solve. Hopes for self-driving technology also came up, but practical use on ordinary roads still faces technical and legal hurdles, leaving family conversations and the spread of driver-assist systems as the realistic near-term answers.

  • Nurse Secretly Injected Violent Patient with Powerful Sedative Propofol — Kishiwada Tokushukai Hospital Hit With Administrative Guidance

At Kishiwada Tokushukai Hospital in Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture, it has come to light that a nurse, trying to calm down a violent inpatient, secretly took propofol — a powerful sedative classified as a controlled drug that had been prescribed for a different patient — and administered it without authorization. The hospital has since received administrative guidance. Yomiuri Shimbun Online reported the story on September 19. Propofol is normally an anesthetic used under a doctor’s orders during surgery or ventilator management, and misjudging the dose carries risks such as respiratory arrest. On 5ch, some users condemned the act as a clear violation, while many others pointed to the reality of night-shift staffing shortages that leave handling violent patients up to whoever’s on duty, sparking a debate over the need for clearer rules on sedative use.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Propofol is a sedative classified as a powerful/controlled drug, used for general anesthesia and for ventilator management in intensive care — it’s not a drug whose dosage a nurse is allowed to decide without a doctor’s orders. In this case, the nurse reportedly took and administered a dose that had been prescribed for a different patient without authorization, and a mismatch between recorded stock and actual usage appears to be what led to the discovery. It’s worth noting, since it’s easy to misread, that administrative guidance is not a criminal penalty but a corrective directive aimed at the hospital’s management system — a separate framework from arrest or prosecution. The thread paired a principled stance that “unauthorized use of a controlled drug is unacceptable” with a sympathetic view pointing to understaffing — “night shifts run on a skeleton crew covering dozens of patients, with virtually no real way to handle a violent patient, leaving it up to whoever’s on the floor” — and the discussion broadened into whether clearer rules for sedative use are needed. What’s easy to miss in the thread’s back-and-forth is that physical restraint and the use of psychotropic drugs normally require procedures like family consent and a doctor’s orders, and that skipping those steps is the real core of the problem.

The fact that the voice actor for Yuzan Kaibara has already passed away, and that protagonist Shiro Yamaoka’s canonical age would now put him around 70, also came up, with many worrying the show would end up like recent revivals: watered down and defanged.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Oishinbo is a long-running gourmet manga that began serialization in Big Comic Spirits in 1983, and its politically charged episodes — heavily colored by creator Tetsu Kariya’s personal views — have repeatedly sparked controversy. Most notably, a 2014 arc covering the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster depicted characters suffering nosebleeds, triggering a controversy so intense that the episode was ultimately left out of the collected volume. The concerns raised in the thread — about compliance issues and political messaging — appear to stem directly from this history. At the same time, the manga is also highly regarded as a pioneering work exploring Japanese food culture, and that nuance — that its legacy isn’t simply good or bad — went largely unmentioned in the responses.

  • New Oishinbo Anime Adaptation Sparks Worry: “Can It Survive Reiwa-Era Compliance Standards?”

The announcement of a new anime adaptation of the popular cooking manga Oishinbo has sparked a wave of reactions on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The original anime was a long-running hit that scored high ratings, and its strong recent view counts on YouTube and subscription streaming services are believed to have helped push this new adaptation forward. On the thread, attention centered on just how faithfully the new series can reproduce the source material under Reiwa-era compliance standards — especially episodes criticizing food additives or ones heavy with the author’s own opinions — while plenty of commenters also expressed nostalgia for the original anime and the live-action film.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Oishinbo is a cooking manga that began serialization in 1983, and its 1988 TV anime adaptation was a hit that scored high ratings at the time. In recent years it has been racking up strong view counts on YouTube and streaming platforms, and this momentum is seen as the backdrop for the new anime adaptation. Opinions in the thread were divided over how the production will handle episodes considered hard to reproduce by Reiwa-era standards — such as those featuring food-additive exposés or ones where the author’s personal opinions come through strongly via the characters. Since the series has previously made headlines over some of its depictions, many commenters worried it might end up “sanitized and inoffensive,” while just as many expressed nostalgia for the original anime and the live-action film (starring Koichi Sato and Rentaro Mikuni), with overall praise for the source material remaining high. As of this writing, there’s no confirmed information on how much of the new series will be freshly produced versus based on the old adaptation.

  • ANGERME Fan Bus Tour BBQ: Fans Say the Meat Served Was ‘Nothing But Fat’

A photo of the barbecue meat served at an ANGERME fan bus tour was posted on a 5ch board dedicated to Hello! Project topics, drawing a flood of reactions. Commenters piled on about how fatty and thin the meat looked, with opinions split between “that’s just how samgyeopsal (Korean-style grilled pork belly) is” and “with vegetables so expensive right now, having plenty of them is actually healthy.” Some also questioned why the meat was grilled sitting on top of the vegetables and poked fun at the bare-bones setup using a portable gas stove. In the end, the discussion centered less on the meat itself and more on the meal quality and how the tour was run.

    Background and Discussion Points

Hello! Project’s fan bus tours are a regular event in which fans chosen by lottery spend a day sightseeing and dining with group members, and the food served along the way has become a near-constant topic on social media and 5ch. This BBQ was no exception: reactions to the fattiness and thinness of the meat in the photos split between those who shrugged it off as “that’s just how samgyeopsal is” and those who took a more favorable view, saying things like “lots of vegetables, that’s healthy” or “the portion is normal.” Some pointed out that placing the meat on top of the vegetables while grilling followed the instructions meant to prevent splattering, while others worried about whether the pork was properly cooked through. Beyond simple differences in taste, the thread reflected real interest in the bus tour’s operations themselves — namely, how much satisfaction can be delivered within a limited budget and basic outdoor equipment.

Once you count the supporting roles, the cast's about as huge as a morning drama — basically anyone can get in.

Ever since it became a sequel, it's turned into a drama that just milks buzz for views.
The dialogue drags on pointlessly and there are a lot of scenes that are just padding for time.

It's not even the main show.
Good, I was worried she'd get in the way of that.

    Background and Discussion Points

Separate from the main story, “VIVANT” has a tradition of a “surprise guest” slot where celebrities appear for just one scene — past examples include Paris Olympics judo gold medalist Natsumi Tsunoda, voice actors Natsuki Hanae and Akari Kito, and game creator Hideo Kojima. Fujimoto’s appearance is likewise not in the main series but in the spinoff “Chinggis – VIVANT: The Origin Story,” streaming exclusively on U-NEXT from September 20, in a role that appears unconnected to the core storyline. In the thread, some questioned whether Fujimoto — who doesn’t have many major acting credits — can actually act, while others rated her current standing highly, saying she’s “by far the most successful” compared to other Morning Musume OGs. Notably, many of the soldier extras in the main series are also played by actors, reflecting the deep bench of casting a big-budget drama like this can afford.

  • Debating the Best Non-Xbox Steam Controllers on 5ch: ‘Rugged Enough for Tanks’

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread was started by a self-proclaimed “die-hard Xbox hater” asking for controller recommendations to use with Steam. With the one rule being “anything but an official Xbox controller,” posters put forward several candidates — HORI pads, the DualSense, the Vader, and the original Xbox 360 controller among them — each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Durability sparked the most disagreement: some argued the DualSense is prone to stick drift, while others countered that Xbox controllers use the same potentiometer-based sticks and will eventually suffer the same fate. The thread also touched on wired-connection lag and how hard it is to get hold of the wireless receiver.

    19AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:24
Tried a bunch of Chinese knockoffs and eventually settled on the DualSense, but now I'm on an Xbox controller.
With PlayStation controllers, Steam automatically maps the Share button to Select, so you have to fix that for every single game — it's a pain.
Also, the Vader's stick-tension adjustment feature is just unnecessary.
    29AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:42
Tried cheap generic pads and the DualSense too, but MS's controller is still #1.

The grip feel in your hand, the stability of the analog sticks, how the D-pad and buttons feel to press — you really notice how much thought went into every little detail.

And its biggest strength is durability.
It's used in tanks and submarines, after all.
I've heard it can go 30+ years without a single issue — basically tough enough to last a lifetime.

Xbox pads, Joy-Cons, and Pro Controllers are all potentiometer-based, so they'll all drift eventually.
The DualSense's durability is defective-level bad, though.
Actually, I think that thing genuinely is defective.

Xbox controllers run on AA batteries, so there's demand from people who don't like built-in batteries.

    This.

The triggers on Xbox controllers are way too stiff. The fanboys defend it for some reason, but when you ask 'Name one other controller with triggers this stiff — didn't the One controller make them softer?' they go quiet.

    Background and Key Points

The comments about DualSense durability draw on the overseas report cited in post #88; analog-stick wear over time (so-called “stick drift”) is an issue that has repeatedly come up in recent years with the PS5 and Nintendo Switch as well. That said, Xbox controllers also use potentiometer-type sticks — the same underlying mechanism — so claims that “Xbox controllers never break” should be read as individual, anecdotal experience shaped by usage frequency and unit-to-unit variation, not as a general rule. As for wireless lag, Bluetooth and the Xbox controller’s proprietary 2.4GHz receiver are different technologies with different susceptibility to interference from things like microwaves, which is why the claim in the thread that “the 2.4GHz band interferes with microwaves” drew pushback. It’s also worth noting that, as of this writing, official Xbox wireless receivers have remained unstable in stock as a standalone purchase, making accessory availability another factor in people’s choices.
