Indie Classic ‘Ori’ Sparks 5ch Debate Over Its Brutal Die-and-Retry Checkpoint Design

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board kicked off after a post criticizing the brutal “die-and-retry” checkpoint design in the indie game series ‘Ori’ was reposted there. Because the original poster was pegged as a Nintendo-leaning commenter, the discussion spiraled into a factional fight over “which side actually hates indie games.” Counterarguments flew back and forth citing things like Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) treatment of indie developers and the platform-by-platform rollout of ‘Palworld,’ while the original criticism of Ori’s punishing checkpoint design also picked up some genuine support.

Ori had that "instant classic" smell right up until the die-and-retry stuff kicked in — the second you could place save points, I was like "wait, this is actually trash."
Trial-and-error against terrain gimmicks where dodging is literally your only option isn't fun at all.

Why does 'Nishi-kun' (5ch slang for a die-hard Nintendo fanboy) end up hating every single indie game?
3AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:41
Well, of course someone with that level of intelligence would defend Nintendo after it sued Palworld.
4AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:41
Seems like a pretty normal critique to me.
Did you even buy Ori?
6AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:41
Nishi-kun and Nintendo are the indie scene's mortal enemies.
8AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:42
Nishi-kun trash-talks indie games everywhere he goes, so of course PC gamers hate him.
9AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:42
Kennosuke ignored the guy trashing indie games as "shallow compared to Mario" and instead jumped straight at the guy bashing PS in that same thread lol
10AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:43
Starting threads out of personal grudges — this is exactly why garbage threads keep piling up.
13AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:43
But I get what this guy's saying.
If you don't design a die-and-retry game carefully, it just kills the replay value.
14AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:44
Can't make a real counterargument, so he just starts a thread to mutter to himself lol
15AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:44
But didn't Ori snub PlayStation too lol
21AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:46
But it's actually PlayStation that indie devs hate lol
Well, I guess that's unavoidable since SIE's developer support is apparently terrible.

Re: #21
Palworld, the indie poster child, snubbed the Switch too (uses "ブヒ"/"膣U," derogatory 5ch slang mocking Nintendo fans and the Switch) — how's that feel?

Re: #21
Nintendo — the company that files SLAPP suits against indie games (a jab combining "SLAPP lawsuit" with the "-dou" in Nintendo's Japanese name) — being loved by indie developers? That's a rough joke.
26AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:48
So in the end, what even is a 'Nishi' anyway?
31AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:50
Re: #26
Everyone in the world except PlayStation loyalists, apparently.
29AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:49
I kind of want to get certified as a 'Nishi-kun' for everything.
More friends joining the club, yay 😊
36AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:52
Re: #29
Any inconvenient truth for PlayStation just gets labeled "Nishi."
37AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:53
Re: #32
Took about two seconds for the "so sad we can't release a physical copy" story to show up.
41AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:58
Re: #37
So "sad we can't release a physical copy" gets translated into "blind rage"?
Run the world through the Nishi-kun filter and apparently it's overflowing with hatred.
40AnonymousNov 8, 2026 17:58
I actually played Ori and thought it was fun, but the criticism in this thread is legit.
You put all that effort into leveling up the skill tree and then get hit with instant-death gimmicks over and over.

Re: #1
Even in the original thread this got reposted from, Ori gets trashed as some no-name garbage game. Nishi-kun fundamentally looks down on indie games, doesn't he.
60AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:22
Re: #59
You don't even need to explain that — our idiot OP (Re: #1) already quoted it right here.
I've only posted twice in this whole thread.
Seriously, nothing but idiots in here.
64AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:32
If you've played Ori and the Blind Forest, you'd know the people who made it have truly beautiful hearts.
73AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:47
Re: #64
I played it on Game Pass but got stuck partway through because it got too hard.
Could've used a bit more of a safety net.
67AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:41
There goes Nishi-kun making enemies out of PC gamers again.
Seriously, know your place.
69AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:44
Re: #67
There's literally a proper Switch version out and this guy doesn't even know it.
Shows his true colors — anything goes as long as he's got a stick to beat Nintendo with right now.
This is exactly why.
68AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:41
Do PC gamers even read the Geha (console war) board?
72AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:47
Re: #68
I'm mainly on Steam but I also own a Switch, so yeah, I read it.
76AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:54
This studio was against Game Pass, so they had no choice but to basically abandon Ori.
I mean, a die-and-retry game like that would get uninstalled in a heartbeat anyway.
77AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:56
Re: #76
That's the kind of thing you can only do if you genuinely care about the game from the heart.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps are critically acclaimed Metroidvania-style indie games originally released on Xbox and PC under a deal with Microsoft, later ported to platforms including the Switch. What’s actually at issue in this thread isn’t the quality of the games themselves, but whether the checkpoint design — built around dodge-only terrain gimmicks and instant-death traps — is good design, with the original critic stating this was a genuine impression based on actually having played the games. The thread, however, quickly devolved into a circular “which side actually hates indie games” argument, with people citing things like SIE’s treatment of developers and platform-exclusive releases as evidence. Set aside the Geha board’s usual factional console-war framing, and this also reads as a genuine genre debate over how difficulty should be balanced in “die-and-retry” games.
