The story

Rakugo performer Tatsukawa Shiraku shared his opinion on X after the 2026 Buzzword of the Year Award nominees were announced. He declared it “a narrow-minded award chosen by just a handful of judges” and called for the introduction of a public vote — a report that sparked a split reaction on 5ch. The discussion ranged widely: worries that a public vote would let organized fan-voting blocs or internet memes dominate the rankings, nostalgic looks back at past nominees, and grumbling that baseball-related terms never get picked.

Tatsukawa Shiraku on the Buzzword of the Year Award: “Far too narrow-minded an award” — a public vote is “absolutely essential”

Rakugo performer Tatsukawa Shiraku (63) posted on his X account on the 7th, sharing his views on the “2026 T&D Insurance Group Buzzword of the Year Award,” whose nominees had been announced on the 5th.

Shiraku opened with, “Once again this year, without learning a thing, the Buzzword of the Year nominees have been announced,” before bluntly declaring, “This award is decided by just a handful of judges. No disrespect to them, but it’s an award with far too narrow a perspective.”

Saying something that's been obvious for 30 years like it's some grand revelation is seriously lame.
5AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:35
I hate Shiraku, but he's got a point for once.
Just make it a fully public vote already.
7AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:37
If it were a public vote, it'd be Yaju-senpai or INMU KING winning (both legendary figures from Japan's "inmu" internet meme culture).
They're even bigger in China and Taiwan than in Japan, if anything.

Re: #7
It'd win by an overwhelming landslide, so a public vote is never gonna happen.
8AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:38
At least they've stopped shoehorning in baseball terms that even fans go "that was never actually trending…" about — that alone is a big improvement, no?
10AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:38
It's the kind of thing that's a topic for a day or two — basically just media hype that fizzles out. Doesn't matter what wins.
12AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:40
With a public vote, you'd get people boosting entries for promotional purposes.
13AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:40
Do a public vote and it'll just get hijacked by organized voting blocs, like idol fan groups.
16AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:42
It's literally just one company's promotional event — a public vote would be absurd.
17AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:43
Re: #1
A public-vote system just isn't workable.

It's not even decided by year's end — offers go out to the ceremony presenters early, and it's basically locked in by autumn.

Once online keyword-search rankings became a thing, they started announcing it earlier and earlier so it wouldn't get directly compared to those.
18AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:44
Learning baseball terms you'd never heard of — that's the real value of the Buzzword Award.
19AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:44
2013 winners: "Ima desho!" ("Now's the time!"), "Jejeje," "Baigaeshi" ("double payback"), "O-mo-te-na-shi" ("hospitality")
Nominees: "local mascot characters," "Abenomics," "PM2.5," "black companies" (exploitative employers)

This year's crop is just weak, that's all.

Re: #19
Huh, surprisingly little favoritism in how it's decided. You'd think there'd be some unspoken rule that Abenomics has to take the top prize.
72AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:11
Re: #19
That lineup's insanely strong lol. In a normal year, any of those 4 nominees could've won the grand prize and nobody would've blinked.
81AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:19
Re: #19
Still, it's nice how a throwaway word like that can jog your memory. "2013" brings back Hayashi's breakout year, the hit dramas Amachan and Hanzawa Naoki, and Tokyo winning the Olympic bid. Hope this year's pick is one that instantly brings 2026 to mind when we look back on it.
20AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:45
Honestly, "buzzwords" don't really exist anymore these days.

You can't pick something that doesn't exist.

If they just went with "new words" instead, that would make sense.
21AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:45
Go public vote and you'll get a pile-on like the infamous Tashiro joke-voting campaign (a notorious case of an online poll getting trolled/brigaded).
26AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:47
Voting ends up dominated by whoever has the strongest current organized fanbase, like idol groups.
Sure, you could try to sample evenly across genders and generations,
but you'd still end up with an even bigger "this isn't it" feeling than now.
27AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:48
Ah, so he's just salty there's no baseball slot this time around.
28AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:48
If that's what you want, just use whatever poll Yahoo or someone's already running.
29AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:49
One of the judges is Yaku Mitsuru — the guy who didn't even know what Netflix was.
31AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:49
Nah, forget it, this award doesn't matter anyway.
33AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:49
Stuff like "kanji of the year" or "buzzword of the year" — seriously, none of it is necessary.
34AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:50
It's the same old "zubari / garari / pishari" (bluntly / completely / flatly) tabloid-headline rotation.
35AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:50
It's weird that "Kuma Kuma Time" ("Bear Bear Time") didn't make the list.
37AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:51
This year it's gotta be "Triple Crown."
77AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:15
Re: #37
"Triple Crown" — I was thinking, how many years ago was that… then realized someone actually won it this year.
And it's a player I've never even heard of.
38AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:53
Who does he think he is? Is this old guy actually a big deal in the rakugo world?
44AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:57
Re: #38
Funnier than Sanpei, less funny than Koraku.
That's the kind of rakugo heavyweight he is.
39AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:54
These days, words nobody's actually using become "buzzwords."
42AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:55
Re: #39
Like "Triple Three" or "Murakami-sama" (lol) (a mock-deifying nickname for a baseball star).
43AnonymousNov 8, 2026 18:56
If a guy like this counts as an elder statesman, that says a lot about the Tokyo rakugo scene lol.
63AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:07
Re: #43
Nah, this guy's not an elder statesman, he's mid-tier.
The real heavyweights in rakugo are guys like Kikuou, Koyuza, Koraku, and Shinosuke.
52AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:00
Re: #30
Out of that bunch, I'd guess "extreme heat day" maybe?
60AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:03
Let ordinary people vote and it'll turn into total chaos.
74AnonymousNov 8, 2026 19:11
Re: #60
It'd end up being "INMU KING."
Ugh, yeah, total chaos.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Buzzword of the Year Award, selected as part of the annual reference book “Gendai Yogo no Kiso Chishiki” (Basic Knowledge of Contemporary Terms), is hosted by Jiyu Kokumin Sha, with a handful of judges picking the nominees and grand-prize winner each year. The 2026 nominees were announced on November 5, and Shiraku’s post came two days later. Where the thread split was over how workable a public vote would actually be: many worried that organized voting blocs or internet memes would dominate the rankings, and the prevailing view was that a full switch to public voting would be difficult. At the same time, some agreed with the underlying complaint that too few judges make the call. One point easy for readers to miss: the award was never built to measure “popularity” against any objective metric in the first place — it’s always come down to the judges’ subjective impressions, so a public vote wouldn’t necessarily make it any fairer.
