Calls Grow for a Sega Saturn Mini — 5ch: “Were the Engineers From the Future?”

From our other sites

The story

Following Sega’s rollout of the “Mega Drive Mini” series, a thread titled “What would you put on a Sega Saturn Mini?” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Posters rattled off wishlist titles ranging from staples like Virtua Fighter 2 and Panzer Dragoon to lesser-known picks like Gungriffon and Digital Museum. Along the way, a debate broke out over where to draw the line — some argued “arcade ports don’t feel very ‘Saturn’” — while others praised the hardware itself, noting that “the tech Sega packed into the Saturn for just 49,800 yen back then feels like it came from the future.” The thread ended up being more than just a wishlist.

Virtua Fighter 2.
6AnonymousNov 2, 2026 20:35
That thing's never coming out, so thinking about it is pointless.
9AnonymousNov 2, 2026 20:37
These days you can play perfect arcade ports, so we don't need those old downgraded ports from back then.
10AnonymousNov 2, 2026 20:38
For a Saturn Mini I want a solid lineup covering fighting games, shooters, and adventure games — and throw in Grandia as a bonus.
15AnonymousNov 2, 2026 20:49
Is there really any point playing an eroge port specifically on the Saturn version? (eroge = adult-oriented PC visual novel)
29AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:30
Re: #15
Back then, just getting a PC into a state where you could actually play games took serious money and know-how. The fact that a home console — where all you had to do was pop in a CD — could run eroge on par with the PC versions was genuinely impressive.

If they include Virtua Fighter 2, Gungriffon, Giren's Ambition… I'd buy it without a doubt.

Also, Rise and Fall of the Millennium Empire.
17AnonymousNov 2, 2026 20:51
I only ever touched it once at a friend's house, so I don't really have any memories of it.

Soukyugurentai, Soul Hackers, Bulk Slash, Gungriffon II, Panzer Dragoon Zwei,
Thunder Force V, Tarōmaru, Dungeon Master Nexus, Dynamite Deka (Dynamite Cop), Cyberbots, Grandia
Something around there, I guess.
If possible, please spare us the dating-sim games though.
23AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:16
Maybe the Pandora series and Fighters Megamix.
24AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:17
If they're including Grandia, Digital Museum absolutely needs to be in there too — it's something only the Saturn could do.
26AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:25
Zeldner Schild
Rise and Fall of the Millennium Empire
Chaos Seed
27AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:28
It'd be amazing if they could release Shining Force III with the bonus disc included, but that's probably never happening.
28AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:29
The two pinball games made by KAZE.
30AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:30
Bulk Slash
Tengai Makyo: Fourth Apocalypse
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny I-III
Giren's Ambition
Shining Force III
31AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:32
As for one that never even got a Japanese release: Mr. Bones.
32AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:32
Langrisser III, which got a crappy port on PS2, needs to be on there too — there's no other hardware that can do it justice.
38AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:36
Re: #32
Just include the whole Langrisser series, why not?

Also, Wizardry: Llylgamyn Saga.
33AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:32
NiGHTS
Burning Rangers
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (Island Story of the Seven Winds)
Enemy Zero
Fighters Megamix
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Devil Summoner
Thunder Force V

Just a gut pick, really.
And if we're talking peak "Saturn-ness," I'd want Death Crimson and Nonomura too, but that's probably asking too much.
34AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:33
There was a Segata Sanshiro game too, wasn't there?
40AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:40
I get titles like Soukyugurentai that were built on the ST-V sister arcade board, but Metal Black and Darius Gaiden feel kind of different somehow.
62AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:31
Re: #40
I guess the Mini format really does have rules like that, huh?
63AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:35
Re: #62
It's not so much a "rule" — it's just that arcade ports carry such a strong Taito/SNK image that they don't feel very "Saturn." Though Darius Gaiden is a masterpiece, for what it's worth.
67AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:38
Re: #62
Basically, it should be original titles that debuted on that hardware — ports from other architectures don't really count, I guess. Though the Mega Drive version of Darius was already an irregular case back then.
43AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:48
The Saturn's architecture is so bizarre that you probably couldn't sell it for even 300,000 yen today. It's on a completely different level from the PlayStation. It's amazing they managed to sell it for 49,800 yen back then. Same goes for the Dreamcast — Sega's engineers at the time were superhuman. I honestly think they must have time-leaped in from the future.
48AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:58
Re: #43
I think it was City Connection that managed to develop an arcade emulator for it — I wonder just how much hardware spec that actually demands.
44AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:51
Way too many people still haven't realized how fun the Saturn version of Daytona USA is. It's honestly a shame.
55AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:22
Re: #44
I actually prefer Sega Rally.

Though when it comes to the Saturn, I kind of don't want to touch arcade ports much.
45AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:51
Honestly, I think back then you could still genuinely enjoy every platform on its own terms — Virtua Fighter and Guardian Heroes on the Saturn, Tekken and Blaze & Blade on the PlayStation, Smash Bros. and Mario Party on the N64.
47AnonymousNov 2, 2026 21:57
Re: #45
Back then Sega and Nintendo's first-party lineups were both strong, and Namco and Square Enix were on PlayStation, so a lot of hardcore gamers ended up buying all three systems.

SCE also had a solid stable of puzzle games, rhythm games, Tenchu, and more… it really was a well-rounded lineup. Personally, PaneKit was the one I found fun.

But once they pivoted toward cinematic, movie-like games and became SIE, I honestly think they turned into a pretty boring company.
54AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:22
Blue Destiny, and that one starring Miho Kanno.
56AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:23
Re: #54
Ah, Kaze no Regret, huh.

Gundam would probably be tough licensing-wise. If so, I'd want the original, masterpiece first Giren's Ambition too.
65AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:38
Dragon Force
Wachenröder
Guardian Heroes
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari
71AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:42
Re: #65
My memory of Wachenröder is that it was a pretty mediocre game. Black/Matrix, which came out around the same time, seemed to get talked about more.
68AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:39
Oh, I've actually never played Gungriffon. Apparently it's pretty good.
73AnonymousNov 2, 2026 22:45
Re: #68
There's a fan-made Windows version built by a diehard fan — search for "Hi-MACS Simulator" and you might find it. Not sure if it's still being distributed these days, though.
84AnonymousNov 2, 2026 23:05
Dynamite Deka (Dynamite Cop) is a rare case of a game where players actually love the QTEs. It's on a different level — a different level entirely. (riffing on Char Aznable's famous Gundam line, "It's not a Zaku, you know — not a Zaku")
88AnonymousNov 2, 2026 23:27
Re: #84
Yeah, because unlike other games, failing a QTE there doesn't feel like a mistake.

Background and key points of debate

Sega has rolled out the “Mega Drive Mini” series, but as of November 2026 there has been no official announcement of a Saturn version — everything in this thread is purely wishful speculation. The Saturn is known for having had a notoriously complex architecture that made development expensive, and the thread reflects that, with comments like “you couldn’t even sell it for 300,000 yen today.” Another sticking point was what should count for inclusion: opinions split over whether arcade ports from companies like Taito and SNK should be treated the same as titles originally created for the Saturn itself. This echoes earlier criticism of mini-console hardware being “nothing but arcade ports” and feeling thin as a result. The mention of eroge ports also reflects the Saturn’s unusual position at the time as a console that let people easily play what were otherwise PC-only games.
