Reddit to Require Login Just to Browse — 5ch: ‘That’s Not “Understanding Users,” That’s Surveillance’

The story

Reddit has revealed plans to require users to log in just to view content, not only to post. CEO Steve Huffman announced the move in a shareholder letter released on October 30, 2026 covering third-quarter results, saying the goal is to address declining traffic and to make it easier to understand who is using Reddit and for what purpose. On 5ch’s News Flash+ (Newsplus) thread, reactions split between suspicion that this is really about surveillance and the view that it’s aimed at sharpening ad targeting and blocking unauthorized AI scraping. Plenty of posters also compared the move to the anonymity and management style of their own 5ch.

The social platform Reddit has announced that going forward, content will only be viewable to logged-in users. The move to require login is meant to address declining traffic.

Then again, unlike 5ch's revolving-door garbage threads, they can actually have proper discussions over there.

Re: #16
Right?
5ch criticizes absolutely everything until it just feels miserable.
You can really see that Japanese 'crab-bucket' mentality of dragging each other down.
17AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:56
It's not 'easier to understand,' it's 'easier to surveil,' come on.
133AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:26
Re: #17
Though plenty of those deletion mods are out of their minds too…
27AnonymousNov 1, 2026 19:59
I get requiring login to post, but requiring it just to read makes no sense at all.
33AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:01
Re: #27
Probably because they want unique user logs to figure out the optimal ad targeting?
50AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:11
Haven't seen the window-and-sash shop around lately — did it go under?
52AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:13
Re: #50
Honestly, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing what 5ch looks like in 20 to 25 years.
68AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:20
Reddit's a pain to use, honestly. Hard to read. I wonder if there's a dedicated browser app for it.
71AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:22
Re: #68
It gets fewer replies than a YouTube comment section anyway
Not much reason for it to even exist.
76AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:26
The big reason is probably to stop AI from freely scraping it by requiring login.
Basically: 'if you want to use it for training data, sign a contract and pay up.'
77AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:27
Re: #76
Before worrying about that, it'd be more useful if it exposed 5ch's actual real user count.
99AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:39
That place's got way worse censorship than 5ch does.
102AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:40
Re: #99
What censorship? This place runs unmanaged — specialty boards get trolled into a wasteland and they just leave it 😅
103AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:40
Maybe they don't want AI reading it.
If this disappears as a source, AI answers are going to get narrower.
153AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:10
Re: #103
I'd crack up if 5ch got translated and turned into reading material over there.
109AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:45
Once people can be personally identified, some of them won't be able to speak their mind anymore.
112AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:46
Re: #109
I thought you already couldn't post without logging in in the first place.
111AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:46
Wait, there are Japanese people on there? There's so much broken-Japanese back-and-forth I assumed it was all machine translation.
130AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:10
Re: #111
Isn't the broken-Japanese stuff just auto-translation?
Dunno though.
117AnonymousNov 1, 2026 20:53
Each board has its own deletion mods, so the 'schizo copypasta guy' types (slang for spammers who paste the same rant repeatedly) just get deleted or shadowbanned and end up talking to themselves.
124AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:02
Re: #117
It's still visible, man
It's not actually hidden.
125AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:03
5ch is too contaminated (with spam/noise)
so it can't be used for training.
155AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:12
Re: #125
AI: 'Want me to decontaminate it?'
128AnonymousNov 1, 2026 21:09
Re: #39
I'm no expert either, but this kind of AI-driven internet collapse worries me.
Is it really fine to keep full-speed developing something as flawed as an undertrained AI?
150AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:06
Re: #128
If the internet collapses and that stalls AI progress too, that's probably a good thing.
If AI keeps evolving past this point, it's gonna get dangerous.
193AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:18
Yeah, that's right — whenever I'm looking something up, I always go take a peek at Reddit.

Hidden away in there are a few little hints for solving the problem.

I find myself endlessly fascinated by what kind of wonderful experience Reddit brings to people.

I absolutely hate this phony, hollow-sounding translation.
195AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:26
Re: #193
Reddit translations have such a Murakami Haruki vibe a lot of the time, huh.
199AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:51
If even Reddit starts requiring registration, then within the already-bottom-tier category of anonymous forums, 5ch is going to look especially pathetic.
200AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:57
Re: #199
That'll make 5ch one of a kind, then.
202AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:58
Re: #199
Is 4chan registration-only too?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Reddit’s policy shift follows the same trend as X (formerly Twitter)’s 2023 move to require login just to view content. Being able to see who’s reading makes ad targeting more precise, and it also makes it easier to block unauthorized AI crawlers from scraping content at the viewing stage itself. Reddit already has data-licensing agreements with companies like Google, so this move can be read as building a system where data only gets handed to partners with a legitimate contract. One point easy to miss in the thread: Reddit already required login to post — what’s newly being restricted is viewing. Reactions on 5ch split between those who see this as tightened surveillance of users and those who see it as a rational business call aimed at advertising and countering AI scraping, with plenty of posts comparing it to the management style of 5ch itself, an anonymous forum.
