Trader Holds ¥10 Million in Kioxia Stock on Margin, Rattled by Post-Earnings Crash

The story

A post went up on 5ch’s “Anything Live” board from someone heading into Monday’s trading session still holding ¥10 million worth of semiconductor maker Kioxia stock on margin. After the company’s earnings report, the share price dropped below ¥12,000 in after-hours (PTS) trading, leaving the poster rattled with losses in the ¥1–1.5 million range. The thread quickly filled with talk of a possible margin call, the broader slump in AI-related stocks, and frustration with the earnings report itself. Even so, the original poster held firm on the belief that “AI investment will pay off eventually,” choosing to keep holding the stock despite the losses — setting off a clash between market optimism and caution in the replies.

Well, the crash is basically a lock at this point, so I'm shaking 🥶
4AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:35
It's only dropping like 10-15%, no big deal.
8AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:37
Re: #4
That "only" means I'm losing ¥1-1.5 million here 🥵
5AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:37
Looks like what was supposed to be a fatal wound might end up just a major injury.
12AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:39
Re: #5
True 🦀
If it was just the earnings report alone, I think it would've definitely hit limit-down
But the Q&A session afterward gave people some relief
6AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:37
It's fine, it's fine, at least they won't take your life.
13AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:39
Re: #6
Money matters more than life 🥹
10AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:38
Seriously, just hit limit-down already
And take the US market down with it two days in a row
20AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:42
Re: #10
That's not out of the question, which is scary 😱
Trump looks like he's losing
11AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:39
Got your margin call money ready?
18AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:41
Re: #11
Nope, don't have that
Might have to take out my first-ever loan from Acom (a major Japanese consumer loan company)
31AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:46
Re: #18
Well, you get force-liquidated, the loss gets locked in, and they tell you to cough up a few hundred thousand yen in margin call money
If you don't pay, your account gets frozen
17AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:41
Being ex-Toshiba, the management has zero sense whatsoever
It's like they're actively working to tank the stock price
25AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:43
Re: #17
This earnings report was on a level where you'd think they're deliberately harassing their own shareholders
Makes you wonder if they even care about investor relations
19AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:41
This guy?

I'm the one who posted the other day about having a ¥3 million unrealized loss on Kioxia 😳

Re: #19
That's the position I opened 🖐
-¥3 million → flipped to profit → and back to confirmed losses again today
22AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:42
Me and Kioxia, together for life.
26AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:43
Re: #22
Since it's on margin, if you hold it forever you just keep getting charged interest forever 🥹
45AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:56
Re: #26
That's not what they meant
24AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:42
You should seriously brace for a margin call tomorrow
It's already below ¥12,000 in after-hours trading
27AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:44
Re: #24
On DEX (an off-hours trading platform) it's recovered to around ¥12,600
28AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:44

We can pull through
29AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:45
Still, I'm kind of surprised Trump was that cozy with AI
I always figured AI wasn't about any one person — just the natural endpoint of the times
In the end all AI's really produced is stuff on the level of "wow, you're really overdoing it" (a backhanded compliment for flashy-but-hollow results)
32AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:46
Re: #29
It's less that Trump is "pro-AI" specifically
He acts because it'd destabilize the US economy otherwise
37AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:49
Re: #29
It's less about Trump and more that the Democrats are dead against AI and want to regulate it
30AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:45
AI still has plenty of market left in it, so just shut up and keep holding.
34AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:48
Re: #30
I think so too, but the market doesn't seem to agree
AI-related stocks are a living hell right now, in both Japan and the US 🥵
36AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:49
Are semiconductors just not going up anymore? My unrealized losses are getting scary.
38AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:49
Re: #36
There's a chance it goes up, but grinding as a corporate drone or picking up a side hustle would pay off faster
40AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:50
Re: #36
Probably hopeless — it's starting to come out that AI investment isn't paying off
41AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:52
Re: #36
I personally think it'll go up though
The market's dropping like it's pricing in an AI bubble bursting

I'm not wrong. The market is wrong 😤
43AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:53
Re: #40
If AI can actually replace human labor, the investment pays for itself
But if you're told to recoup it just from ChatGPT or Gemini subscription fees, yeah that's impossible
46AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:56
Re: #43
People are starting to decide that companies can't keep funding investment all the way until it gets there
51AnonymousNov 2, 2026 01:01
Re: #43
How many more decades until it's actually practical enough to replace humans, lol
44AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:55
Eh, worst case it just goes to zero
As long as you're alive, you'll figure something out
48AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:58
Re: #44
If it doesn't work out I'll just go on welfare and live easy
We'll probably have basic income within 10 years anyway
47AnonymousNov 2, 2026 00:57
It was looking a little better earlier this week so I thought it'd just keep recovering from there
If only I'd cut my losses back then…
52AnonymousNov 2, 2026 01:01
Re: #47
If you start saying "if only" about investing, there's no end to it
49AnonymousNov 2, 2026 01:00
Re: #46
That take is wrong
Top-tier companies like Amazon and Google are accelerating their AI investment, and the market's just selling off because it doesn't like that

It'll be fine — Amazon and Google are a hundred million times smarter than the idiots running the market
54AnonymousNov 2, 2026 01:01
Re: #49
Your judgment is the one that's wrong here, shaking over your losses
Once you're wearing rose-colored glasses and can't tell wishes from facts anymore, that's how you end up bankrupt
58AnonymousNov 2, 2026 01:06
Re: #49
I won't deny that part, but regulatory moves are starting to show up
If those pass, it's game over

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Kioxia is a major semiconductor company — formerly Toshiba Memory — specializing in NAND flash memory. While AI-driven demand has put semiconductor stocks in the spotlight generally, this time the earnings report fell short of market expectations and the share price plunged. Margin trading lets investors trade with more money than they actually have, which carries the risk of a margin call if the share price drops — a risk that came up repeatedly in the thread. Opinions split between the optimistic view that “AI investment will pay off eventually” and the cautious view that “investment has run ahead of itself and the market is growing wary,” with commentary on U.S. policy trends mixed in as well. Readers should keep the original poster’s personal gains and losses separate from the broader, structural concerns spreading across AI-related stocks.
