The story

Ryota Yamasato of the comedy duo Nankai Candies sparked a reaction on X on the 21st with a post reading, “Even with a line of people waiting behind them, the field of vision of someone who keeps chatting long after they’ve finished eating must be pretty dangerous in the animal kingdom.” While many voices agreed with his complaint about diners who keep socializing without regard for the line of people waiting, on 5ch opinions were split, with some users criticizing the wording of the post itself, saying things like “we don’t even know what kind of restaurant this is about” or “the phrasing feels creepy.” The discussion gradually broadened into concrete gripes about nuisance behavior — restaurants struggling with customers who overstay, people using cafes as a substitute office, and tourist manners.

Ryota Yamasato (49) of Nankai Candies updated his X account by the 21st, raising an alarm over something that happened at a restaurant.

He quipped, “Even with a ton of people lined up behind them, the field of vision of someone who keeps chatting on and on after they’ve finished eating must be pretty dangerous in the animal kingdom.”

It's not the animal kingdom, so we're fine

Re: #3
Is it a plant?
Or some kind of virus?

Re: #3
Kind of like those pig-people from Spirited Away?
4AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:04
Looks like Yamachan's been forgiven (his nickname — seems like a nod to a past scandal)
6AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:05
My favorite thing is watching couples at ramen shops where the guy accidentally ends up scarfing his food down too fast
18AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
Re: #6
Ah, that happens
I end up scarfing it down out of habit too
7AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:05
My cat and my dog both eat without caring who's around either
13AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:06
The field of vision of someone who keeps showing up on TV even while the public's pointing fingers at them behind their back
Might be pretty dangerous in the animal kingdom too
15AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:06
Another celebrity broadcasting how us "slaves" (i.e. ordinary people) are just getting in the way, huh
16AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:07
This is exactly why I don't want to go to crowded restaurants
17AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:07
It's probably gone down compared to before, thanks to people exposing this stuff online
19AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
Don't underestimate the mental toughness of a middle-aged woman ("obahan")
20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
Well, basically they just can't read the room
Probably just has a crappy personality
There are also people who deliberately slow down crossing at crosswalks when a car's trying to turn right or left
22AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
There are also people who know full well others are waiting in line and sit down on purpose anyway
23AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
That's basically the same as saying you want to kill them
24AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:08
You're way more defenseless while you're actually eating
Don't underestimate the savanna
25AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:09
There's also the guy who sits alone at a 4-person table, finishes eating, and just keeps staring at his phone forever!
26AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:09
This headline seems like the kind someone's going to take way too literally
They'll probably start saying stuff like "so they're eating while standing in the line?" lol
28AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:11
A stylish cafe opened in my neighborhood a while back and I kept meaning to go someday, but every time I looked, the same group of regulars had it occupied, and it eventually went under
Meanwhile whatever opened after it — some kind of chiropractic clinic? — is still running without going under, so I guess business really is tough

Re: #28
Turnover rate is a real headache, but cafes are going to struggle unless they set a time limit lol
There really are idiots who use them like a second office.
Manga artists apparently use them that way too without a second thought, and once all sorts of professions start treating the place as their outside-the-house hangout, the shop's done for.

Komeda and McDonald's are really the only weird exceptions to this.
29AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:11
The shop owner hasn't actually said anything, you know. Maybe they don't even think customers should leave the second they finish eating. It'd just mean more rush and more burden on them.
32AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:12
There are all kinds of shop situations so you can't really generalize
What kind of shop is even the "standard" case this complaint is assuming?
65AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:20
Re: #32
Probably a fast food place or a chain restaurant, right?
33AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:12
In the animal kingdom, this guy's the one who'd end up getting killed
44AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:14
Inbound tourists chatting away forever at the counter of a ramen shop with a line out the door
A scene you see a lot lately
52AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:16
Re: #44
Ramen shops and other counter-seat places really get hit hard by this — the shop needs to say something
45AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:15
That's dumb
That type of person can't pick up on sarcasm or irony, so phrasing it that way won't get through to them at all
They'll just go "lol it's not the animal kingdom though" without ever realizing it's about them
47AnonymousOct 21, 2026 12:15
Something about the phrasing just feels off/creepy
Just say it plainly: "think about the people waiting in line"

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Since Yamasato’s post didn’t specify the restaurant’s name or type, thread users were divided on how to read it — some assumed “this must be about a fast-food place,” others guessed “a counter-seat ramen shop.” Underlying this is a long-noted tension in the restaurant industry: at lower-priced establishments especially, how long customers linger directly affects table turnover and revenue, creating a gap between shop owners who’d rather not see extended socializing and customers who feel free to take their time once they’ve paid. Some in the thread also noted that long conversations at counter seats have become more noticeable lately amid the rise in inbound tourists. On the other hand, some argued that dealing with this kind of nuisance behavior should really be up to the restaurant itself — through rules like time limits — and questioned the framing of the post for pinning the blame on individual customers’ good or bad behavior instead.
