Why ‘The Emblem of Roto’ Gets No Respect While ‘Dai’s Great Adventure’ Gets All the Love — 5ch Thread: ‘The Gnon Fight Was the Peak’

The story

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board took off after a poster pointed out that the Dragon Quest manga ‘The Emblem of Roto’ gets far less love than ‘Dai’s Great Adventure.’ Both are spin-off manga based on the Dragon Quest games, but posters argued that Roto’s story peaks with the fight against the Beast King Gnon and only gets darker from there, while also pointing to the lack of a signature finishing move and weaker technique names compared to Dai. Some noted that series creator Yuji Horii is actually a big fan of ‘The Emblem of Roto,’ which only fueled the debate over why the two works are received so differently.

What people said

Emblem of Roto's actually better though
stuff like the Beast King Gnon fight
3AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:24
Lord Imagine's moves are just natural phenomena said out loud as attack names
6AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:25
It comes down to which move you'd want imported into the games — Medoroa or Mezoragon
8AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:26
The Gnon fight was the peak and it's downhill from there
Dai stayed hype all the way to the finale
11AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:28
On top of writing Lunafrea out almost immediately, the whole thing has this oppressive, gloomy atmosphere throughout
14AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:29
Funny thing is, Horii himself loves Emblem of Roto and never even brings up Dai lol
20AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:32
Re: #14
But didn't they ignore Roto's spells and sword techniques and import Medoroa and Gigastrash (from Dai) instead?
15AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:30
People don't even talk about the fact that it has a sequel
If anything that one's even longer
16AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:30
It really comes down to how impactful the moves are
Several of Dai's techniques even got reverse-imported into the mainline games
27AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:35
Re: #16
The Sword King's and Fist King's moves are so cool, but since they never actually landed a finishing blow with them, they don't get reverse-imported into the games
17AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:30
Come to think of it, there were rumors that Dragon Quest XII would include Emblem of Roto elements (the Red Roto gear)
I wonder if that got scrapped too
19AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:32
I think it's just catchiness
Though I do think Kamui's art is more skilled
21AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:32
All I remember is that the hairstyle on the Budokan woman looked gross
23AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:33
Emblem of Roto really is dark the whole way through
I mean the main character dies
24AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:33
Avan Strash is just cool
The thing with Emblem of Roto is it doesn't really have a signature finishing move
25AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:34
There's this priest named Tarukin who just swings around the Staff of Power in some throwaway fight against Gnon's mooks
26AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:35
There's stuff like Kenou Raijinga (the Sword King's Thunder Fang Blade) and Shousei's Magic Light Bullet too
32AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:37
Something about Arus feels inhuman too
He gives up on his allies so easily, like some peace-loving robot
I liked Jagan better
33AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:38
Re: #32
But the Mark of Roto chose Arus, you know…
35AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:39
Ah, small correction — Arus doesn't have a signature finishing move
38AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:40
Re: #35
Well he's got Giga Dain and Mina Dain, so…
36AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:40
The Gnon fight is the peak after all
After that it's just a flat, gloomy, uneventful slog the rest of the way
57AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:48
Re: #36
Jagan's fighting style was super aggressive though, it totally scratched that edgy chuuni itch (chuuni = the overblown "too cool" teenage sensibility)
And the mystical atmosphere once the story moves to the underground world was drawn really well too
Say what you want, but Fujiwara Kamui was genuinely good at depicting the world
Though his other series Raika was boring as hell and flopped hard with its sequel
44AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:42
What's great about Dai is stuff like the Supreme Flash Spell — it really hits that edgy chuuni nerve
48AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:44
Re: #44
The combo spells hit pretty hard too
Though the names, though…
51AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:45
Re: #48
Stuff like Bagira, Baibaha, and Okurura are fine though
52AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:46
Re: #48
You get it
The naming's just kinda lame somehow
55AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:47
Re: #51
Medoroa alone just blows all of that out of the water
96AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:11
Re: #55
It's already decided the moment Finger Flare Bombs shows up
No need to even wait for Medoroa
71AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:57
I used to buy Gangan every month, but the Dragon Quest VII manga wasn't very good
73AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:58
Re: #71
The one with that garbage Kiefer x Maribel pairing?
74AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:59
Re: #71
A crappy manga where Maribel being cute was the only redeeming quality
98AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:11
Re: #71
That's the Kamui one, right? Feels like he ended up a one-hit wonder with just Emblem of Roto
The art wasn't bad though — The Warriors of Eden. Then again, the source material, DQ7, was a bad game to begin with, so I guess Dragon Quest's world-building really was at its best back in the Roto and Zenithian (Sky) era
DQ7's protagonist is just some unremarkable short kid from a village, there's nothing there to get hyped about
76AnonymousOct 22, 2026 12:59
Speaking of memorable lines from Emblem of Roto, got any?
83AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:02
Re: #76
"Don't underestimate me, Great Demon King"
80AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:02
Re: #51
Dai's stuff like Betan wasn't that cool either
But Dai's techniques in general are cool
It really resonates with kids
88AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:04
Re: #80
What's good about Dai is how convincingly Matoriv explains the Supreme [X] Spells
82AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:02
Caesarion gets ripped apart with a "splat," laid open like a butterflied mackerel
How is that something kids are supposed to read?
97AnonymousOct 22, 2026 13:11
Re: #82
Dai's Great Adventure also blows off the face of Galdandy's sidekick with Begirama

Background and Key Points of the Debate

‘Dai’s Great Adventure’ got a brand-new TV anime adaptation in 2020, which renewed public attention on the series in recent years. The “favoritism” pointed out in the thread is likely influenced in part by this difference in name recognition from the re-animation, though that point was never raised within the thread itself. ‘The Emblem of Roto,’ on the other hand, has had few major opportunities for a comeback since its original run in the 1990s, and its structure settles into a dark tone from the midpoint onward. Opinions in the thread were split between surface-level comparisons — flashy moves, whether a character has a signature finishing move — and the deeper difference in story structure itself as the real reason for the disparity in treatment, with neither argument fully settling the matter. The detail that creator Yuji Horii is actually fond of ‘The Emblem of Roto’ also remained a factor that resists any simple explanation of how the two works came to be perceived so differently.
