Decided to Get AGA Treatment via Online Clinic — 5ch Users Weigh In on Drug Side Effects and Costs

The story

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a poster who announced plans to start online treatment for AGA (male pattern baldness) the next day received a wave of advice from fellow thread members drawing on their own experience. The poster said they’d “gotten about as bald as Tsurube” (Shofukutei Tsurube, a famously bald Japanese comedian/TV host) but had decided to make one last stand with treatment. The discussion expanded into how to pick a treatment approach — covering minoxidil’s side effects and impact on liver function, the differences between finasteride and dutasteride, comparisons with hair transplants, and how to safely handle topical medication in households with pets. Opinions also diverged on effectiveness: early treatment tends to work better, but the receding “M-shaped” hairline is said to be much tougher to treat.

Getting my online consultation tomorrow.
2AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:58
Are you in the pre-bald league already? 🥺
6AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:59
Re: #2
I'm already about as bald as Tsurube.
Thought I'd put up one last fight.
25AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:12
Re: #6
LOL
If you're as bald as Tsurube it's hopeless, just give up.
By the way, how old are you?
10AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:01
Re: #1
All it does is create a record that you had a consultation — they don't actually examine the state of your hair.
18AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:07
Re: #10
Sounds like it didn't work out for big bro…
12AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:02
Isn't a hair transplant plus AGA treatment on a whole different level?
21AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:10
Re: #12
Isn't a transplant actually worse value since you need maintenance for life?
26AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:12
Don't use the topical stuff if you've got a cat — it can kill them.
31AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:13
Re: #26
I don't have a cat myself, but there's one at my parents' place, so I'll have to be careful.
27AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:12
Apparently if you start AGA treatment right when you start balding, there's a decent shot at reversing it.
33AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:14
Re: #27
Feels like it's already been about 4 years since I started going bald.
28AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:12

Do I still have hair follicles left?
34AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:15
Re: #28
Short hairs keep falling out bit by bit, so I'm hoping that means the follicles are still alive.
39AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:17
I'm also considering it since the hair at my temples has gotten way too thin.
Could a topical treatment save it?
67AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:35
Re: #39
There's 24-hour online consultation available.
It's probably just a few thousand yen anyway, so why not give it a shot?
I think it was called something like "DMM AGA."
41AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:17
Is it true AGA treatment doesn't work on a receded hairline?
46AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:22
Re: #41
Don't say such awful things, man.
43AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:19
You should get a blood test to make sure your liver's okay.
Apparently the oral meds are bad news if your liver's weak.
47AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:22
Re: #43
I've got fatty liver and I'm actually being treated for that too.
My numbers have improved a lot — is that still a problem?
50AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:26
Some guys just won't regrow hair no matter how much fina/mina (finasteride/minoxidil) they use, so shaving your head and accepting it is also an option.
Just don't become one of those bald guys pathetically trying to hide it.
59AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:31
Re: #50
True, I won't end up as the kind of bald guy whose last few strands flap in the wind.
53AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:29
Topical minoxidil plus 7HP (a high-strength minoxidil hair-growth product) has actually gotten me pretty solid regrowth.
61AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:31
Re: #53
How long did that take?
54AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:29
AGA treatment sounds like such a big deal, but at the end of the day it's just taking pills or rubbing something on.
62AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:32
Re: #54
Yeah, true.
On top of that, I feel like cleaning up your diet and exercising can make a real difference too.
55AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:30
If baldness runs in your family, it's pretty normal to start on finasteride in your early twenties.
63AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:32
Re: #55
I wasn't organized enough to start prevention that early.
58AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:30
Why doesn't dutasteride get talked about much?
Isn't it basically finasteride's upgraded big brother?
65AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:34
Re: #58
I feel like the side effects can be pretty rough when they hit.
Though apparently the effectiveness is outstanding.
66AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:35
Well, no matter how much you apply, it's pointless once the follicles are completely gone.
Give up on the M-shaped hairline.
69AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:36
Re: #66
I see.
At least if my sideburns and beard get thicker I could pull off being a "good-looking bald guy," so I'll try applying it there.
68AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:36
My advice: get married and have kids before you start taking the medication.
71AnonymousOct 7, 2026 17:37
Re: #68
Mine's due to make its grand debut right after New Year's.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

AGA (male pattern baldness) treatment generally combines oral medications like finasteride and dutasteride with topical minoxidil, and keeping the effect requires continuing to take and apply them long-term. In recent years, more clinics have started offering online consultations that let patients get a same-day prescription, but since oral medications can burden liver function, a blood test beforehand is recommended. The cost — several thousand yen a month, ongoing — can also add up to a real burden. The old legend that comes up in the thread, that “castration prevents baldness,” has spread as something of an urban myth and isn’t an established modern treatment, which is easy to misunderstand. Also, the point raised that topical minoxidil can poison cats on contact, so pet-owning households need to be careful, is something that’s genuinely said in real medical settings too.
