The story

Overseas outlet sumahodigest has published new details on Sony’s reportedly in-development next-gen handheld, the “PSP3.” The device is said to pack a custom chip called “Kynis,” built on TSMC’s N3P process, and GPU performance is claimed to reach up to 11.5TFLOPS when connected to a dedicated dock. The figure sparked buzz for surpassing the PS5’s 10.28TFLOPS, but the thread debated whether that number is a theoretical peak that includes “Dual Issue” throughput, as well as speculation that the console could be priced at $999 (roughly ¥160,000). With no official announcement yet, the flurry of competing leaks also drew plenty of skepticism about where the information was even coming from.

Regarding the PSP 3, reportedly being developed by Sony as its next-generation handheld game console, the possibility has emerged that its docked performance could far exceed previous estimates. According to the latest calculations, the custom “Kynis” chip, built on TSMC’s N3P process, is said to allow GPU performance to reach up to 11.5TFLOPS when connected to the dock.

Ah, sorry about that. This number includes Dual Issue (counts two ops per cycle), my bad

Re: #3
So more like 5TFLOPS then
That's garbage
5AnonymousOct 6, 2026 07:38
Fine, but what price are they planning to sell it at?
15AnonymousOct 6, 2026 07:55
Re: #5
$999 / ¥159,980

Re: #15
Bankruptcy incoming for sure, lol
96AnonymousOct 6, 2026 10:22
Re: #15
There's no way it comes in under $1000
If they want that price, they'd either have to gut the specs to garbage levels or do it as charity work with massive losses baked in
9AnonymousOct 6, 2026 07:41
Who even believes Sony handheld leaks anymore…
20AnonymousOct 6, 2026 07:58
Feels like there's a next-gen PlayStation story almost every day now

Re: #20
It's just the same site with the same fangirl (otome) praying the same prayer
Probably the same guy making all these threads too
25AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:06
Needing a dock to get there… no pride left, huh
30AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:15
Re: #25
As long as they insist 'we had the idea first,' the fanboys will follow along, so it's fine
26AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:07
Both Switch and PlayStation skew middle-aged, don't they
This country is an aging, low-birthrate society after all
Middle-aged guys with money play Switch; middle-aged guys without money just grind free-to-play games on PS
39AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:38
Re: #26
Switch2 has a lot of middle-aged users too,
but PS5's main user base IS middle-aged
28AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:12
If they were aiming to appeal to young people, going handheld was already the obvious answer back in the PSP days
Releasing a handheld this late is fine, but at ¥200,000 with 'politically correct' (ポリコレ, i.e. agenda-driven) exclusives as the pitch, I have no idea who they're even targeting

Re: #28
The Vita, a handheld, sold fewer units than the PS5, a home console
Being a handheld doesn't automatically mean it sells

All-time domestic PlayStation hardware sales ranking
21.98 million — PS2
19.69 million — PSP
19.41 million — PS
10.27 million — PS3
9.50 million — PS4
7.72 million — PS5
5.86 million — PS Vita

Tack on an unnecessary dock and there's no way it stays under ¥200,000
46AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:48
Re: #31
Do that and the performance gap with handheld mode just widens
There'll probably end up being games you can't play undocked
32AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:19
Wait, does the dock itself have a GPU and CPU that boost performance? Switch doesn't do that
50AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:55
Re: #32
Nintendo holds the patent on the mechanism where 'the dock also has chips built in, and linking them together boosts performance,' so it seems unlikely PSP3 could use that
54AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:01
Re: #50
There are laptops that use Thunderbolt docking, so they could probably work around the patent that way
60AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:05
Re: #50
Now that you mention it, I've never seen a Switch-style handheld PC that gets a performance boost from docking 🤔

So it really was patented 😮
36AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:31
Re: #32
It's probably just lifting power-draw limits that apply when it's not plugged in
Switch already does that too
38AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:36
Re: #36
That's just a boost mode kicking in, not an actual GPU sitting in the dock
47AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:49
I mean, even the Switch is already tight on storage, so how are they handling that
Don't tell me it's going to rely on cloud streaming
49AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:52
Re: #47
Probably they'll let you attach an SSD to the dock
Makes it less and less convenient as an actual handheld (´・ω・`)
52AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:56
Re: #49
At that point it doesn't even need to be a handheld…
57AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:03
Re: #49
So I guess that means they're not aiming for seamless handheld/docked play like Switch does
Or maybe you can only launch games that are actually stored on the console itself, with the rest just sitting there saved
48AnonymousOct 6, 2026 08:50
Even the PS5 is already expensive, and if they release something like this it'll easily blow past ¥100,000
Who's actually buying this
56AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:01
Re: #48
Makes you realize all over again that the price-hiked Switch 2 is actually cheap by comparison 😮
58AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:03
The fact that everything from the form factor on down is circulating as 'leaks' with zero official announcement is already a messed-up situation, regardless of whether any of it's true
64AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:20
Re: #58
It's probably convenient for SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) too, honestly
91AnonymousOct 6, 2026 10:12
Re: #64
There's no way hearing this makes anyone go 'guess I'll skip the Switch 2 and wait for the PSP3' though…
93AnonymousOct 6, 2026 10:16
Re: #91
Even if a new PSP comes out, it's not going to substitute for a Switch anyway
94AnonymousOct 6, 2026 10:21
Re: #91
If anything, maybe they just don't want people assuming PlayStation is pulling out of the market
67AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:26
It's not that even Switch 2 is tight on space — it's that Switch 2 just comes with an insultingly small 256GB
If it's treated as a secondary handheld, 500GB would get by fine, and 1TB would be more than enough
70AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:31
Re: #67
Huh? A secondary machine? That's all it's treated as?
You're going to make third parties support that too? There's no way third parties go along with that
Third parties support PlayStation because of its high performance and how easy it is to do multi-platform releases with PC — they're not going to properly support something weaker than the PS5
74AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:34
Re: #67
It's the price of a 1TB SSD that's the problem (´・ω・`)
And if they use proprietary storage like the Vita did, I can't even imagine how much a single storage card would cost
77AnonymousOct 6, 2026 09:36
Re: #67
Given how much memory prices have spiked lately, 256GB was probably the right call 😁

If they'd packed in 512GB/1TB, the price hike would've blown past ¥20,000 😨

Background and key points of debate

Leak stories like this one are often published by overseas specialty outlets based on speculation, and Sony has yet to make any official announcement. TFLOPS figures represent the theoretical peak of the compute units, and the number changes significantly depending on whether “Dual Issue” (processing two operations per cycle) is factored in — which is why the thread flagged that it can’t simply be compared to the PS5’s 10.28TFLOPS. Handheld hardware tends to cost more to miniaturize than home consoles, pushing prices up, while domestic sales of handheld hardware have historically lagged behind home consoles (the PSP sold around 19.69 million units, and the PS Vita around 5.86 million). That underlying question of whether to prioritize handheld or home-console hardware as the core product strategy is what’s really driving both the price debate and the ‘should it just be treated as a secondary device’ reactions.
