The story

On October 5, Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi announced on his X account that, citing mental and physical health issues, he will turn down all future work requests that come with deadlines and prioritize writing the Hunter x Hunter manuscript instead. The series, which began serialization in 1998, has sold over 100 million copies in total (including digital editions) and remains hugely popular, but it’s also well known for its repeated long hiatuses. On 5channel, many questioned the premise of the announcement itself, asking “Was he even doing other deadline work to begin with?”, while others compared him to manga artists like Takehiko Inoue and Kazushi Hagiwara, whose own long-running series have similarly stalled out.

Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of the manga Hunter x Hunter, updated his X account on the 5th to announce that, due to mental and physical health issues, he will turn down all future work requests that come with deadlines and instead prioritize producing his own manuscript.

On X, he wrote: “With my mental and physical health issues piling up, after I finish the request I’m currently handling, I’ve decided to turn down all future work requests that have deadlines and prioritize producing my own manuscript. I’ll post an update here once manuscript production resumes.”

Hunter x Hunter, which began serialization in 1998, is an adventure fantasy following the boy Gon as he journeys with friends including his best friend Killua. The story is currently in the “Dark Continent Arc” (Succession War Arc), depicting the clashing agendas of characters like Kurapika and members of the Phantom Troupe aboard a ship bound for an uncharted continent. The series has sold over 100 million copies in total (including digital editions).

Wait, was he even doing jobs other than Hunter x Hunter?

Re: #2
Besides the actual manuscript pages for Jump, there's probably still HxH-related deadline work — like game tie-ins and merchandise.
5AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:49
Talks like he's actually been hitting his deadlines.
6AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:50
At least leave behind a plot outline first.
7AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:50
Working with no deadlines and total freedom — that's the hobbyist/dōjinshi (self-published fan work) world, not professional manga.
8AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:50
Wait, Hunter x Hunter's been running since the '90s? lol
26AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:55
Re: #8
I think it started around the same time as One Piece.
Neither one of them is ever going to end.
11AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:51
He's published pages that weren't even inked, and pages that were just text before — so at this point as the original creator he could just write the story and let someone else draw the art.
If all you need to do is think and talk, you could do that bedridden.
12AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:52
This guy… he's going to end up like Kazushi Hagiwara, where eventually nobody takes him seriously anymore.
23AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:54
Re: #12
Same vibe, lol
14AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:52
Just give us a whole volume's worth at once.
15AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:52
Normally THAT manuscript work has a deadline too — what's he even talking about?
16AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:53
Don't talk like you've been working this whole time, lol
28AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:55
Re: #16
Yeah right, lol
17AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:53
He might seriously never finish
Hunter x Hunter.
18AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:53
Health issues, huh…
The art style's probably going to get rougher again…
Though for readers that might actually make it more interesting.
I want him to sink the ship and kill everyone off.
27AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:55
Re: #18
This could be setting up a total massacre ending —
Chrollo and Hisoka go berserk and that's how it ends.
20AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:53
Is he even doing any work besides the ~10 chapters that become a volume once every few years? Stop acting like you're busy.
138AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:16
Re: #20
He finishes exactly one volume's worth, then conveniently gets sick.
Real convenient way to keep his promise to the editor.
That "back pain"… suspicious.
24AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:54
Feels like some readers might die before this thing even ends 😭
Can he even finish writing it in the first place?
25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:54
It's not even interesting anymore, so who cares.
29AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:55
The last cliffhanger was actually getting pretty good though, that's a shame.
37AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:56
Re: #29
Was it actually getting good?
You were just playing favorites with Hisoka.
Meanwhile the prince using King Crimson (the stand ability from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) got turned into a nobody.
32AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:56
Hunter x Hunter ended with the Chimera Ant arc.
Everything after that is basically a different series as far as I'm concerned.
116AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:11
Re: #32
Yeah, it ended with the Ant arc.
35AnonymousOct 5, 2026 19:56
Work… with a deadline?

Wait, what? Wait, what?
69AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:04
Re: #35
That's proof he's not taking it seriously.
That's not something you say if you're even nominally serializing in a weekly magazine, irregular schedule or not.
51AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:00
No but seriously, he hasn't done any work besides Hunter x Hunter in like the last fifteen years…
67AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:03
Re: #51
Said like he was actually doing the Hunter work.
55AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:01
Jump artists have a habit of never finishing:

Takehiko Inoue — can't finish Vagabond, still serialized
Kazushi Hagiwara — left his series hanging and is off doing other work without a care
Yasuhiro Kida — stopped drawing and is off dabbling in stocks and politics
And now Togashi's doing this.
66AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:03
Re: #55
Out of that lineup, Togashi actually looks like the least bad one.
84AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:06
Re: #55
There's also that one case in shojo manga where the readers themselves started dying off one by one before the series ever got to finish — some theater-themed manga.
In the end, it's money, hangers-on, and old age that change people.
102AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:09
Re: #55
Kenka Shoubai (his fighting-themed manga) is probably done for at this point.
Once someone doing creative work gets into stocks or politics, that's the end.
59AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:02
If deadline work is too hard for you, go do dōjinshi instead.
Don't disrespect commercial publishing like that.
And besides, if you can barely even make progress on Hunter x Hunter, don't go taking on other jobs too.
137AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:16
Re: #59
Dōjinshi have deadlines too, you know…
Though this guy did put out dōjinshi with his wife during one of his Hunter hiatuses.
101AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:09
What about Bastard!! (Kazushi Hagiwara's long-stalled manga)?
112AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:11
Re: #101
Looks like it's headed for the Oishinbo route (gone semi-indefinitely irregular).
106AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:10
There are probably people who don't even know what's going on with Yotsuba&! these days.

118AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:11
Re: #106
Did it merge with Azumanga Daioh? lol
124AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:14
Three people from this poster announced their graduation one after another, so that's probably it.

Background and points of debate

Togashi is known for having repeatedly taken long hiatuses from Hunter x Hunter, so the stated policy of “prioritizing manuscript work” itself echoes his past hiatus announcements. Where opinions split on the thread was over the premise of the announcement itself — whether he had actually been taking on other deadline work besides HxH over the past decade or so. While there are related projects like game adaptations and merchandise, it’s unclear from this announcement whether he personally had been taking on individual deadline jobs. Many commenters also drew comparisons to artists like Takehiko Inoue and Kazushi Hagiwara, whose long-running series have similarly stalled, though the circumstances behind each artist’s hiatus differ and can’t simply be equated. In the end, readers’ real concern is whether the “Dark Continent Arc” will actually be completed once serialization resumes — but for now, the only confirmed fact is this change in policy.
