Nintendo’s Miyamoto Says ‘Don’t Drag Me Into Hardware Spec Wars’ — 5ch Divided: ‘Isn’t That a Bit Convenient?’

The story

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto remarked that he’d rather not be “dragged into hardware wars over specs and performance,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Thread posters noted that Nintendo once touted its technical prowess by claiming the GameCube could display “128 Marios at once,” and questioned whether it was a bit too convenient for the company to now distance itself from the specs race. Others pushed back, arguing it was Sony that had been “flexing” over performance, leaving the thread divided. The discussion eventually expanded to comparisons between the Switch 2’s 60,000 yen price tag and PS5 sales trends following its price hike.

What people said

If they'd said this from the start, fine, but Nintendo's the company that used to brag about specs — remember "we can render 128 Marios at once"?
For a company that used to flex on performance to suddenly bow out of the specs race and go "please don't compare us" seems awfully convenient, no?

The "128 Marios" thing was just Nintendo promoting its own product — showing how much more powerful the GameCube was compared to the N64.
There's no evidence they used that to flex on other companies.

People who post baseless nonsense like that on boards like 5ch are,
statistically speaking, mostly socially maladjusted.
In Japan that crowd gets called "kodomobeya ojisan" (basement-dwelling manchildren).

AI these days is wild.

Re: #2
This is how you actually use AI properly.
People who just paste a screenshot and act like they've won an argument should take notes.
13AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:12
Wasn't it Sony that started the whole specs war in the first place, flexing with a bunch of exaggerated performance claims?

Re: #13
So true.
At first it was the only selling point they had, but by now it's become gospel for the unhinged fanboy crowd.
And now it comes with the worst possible bonus: needless spec wars driving hardware prices up.
Sony seriously needs to take responsibility for the mess they started.
38AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:42
Funny how they cranked the specs up just enough to force a price hike, and now they're struggling because of it.

Re: #38
Yeah, that's PS5 for you.
40AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:45
Re: #38
Wait, are you talking about the PS5 Pro?
41AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:46
Obviously I mean the Trashwitch 2 (a mocking nickname combining "trash" and "Switch").
Since the price hike, weekly sales have basically settled at 20,000 units, occasionally spiking to 30,000 around Obon and the like.
And that's with plenty of stock sitting around.
This hardware is a joke.

Re: #41
Quit trash-talking the PS5 — it's supposed to be cheaper than the Switch 2 and it's still not selling.
51AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:52
Re: #41
So I guess we're just ignoring that its performance is exactly why third parties keep bringing AAA titles to it?
47AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:49
But it's pretty much guaranteed that Microsoft and Sony will have to sell their next-gen consoles at a serious loss just to keep them in an affordable price range, so within the console space at least, they'll have no real competition left.
49AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:51
Re: #47
Consoles are worse than garbage at this point, they'll all disappear eventually.
Phones and PC are all you need.
79AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:05
Re: #47
Nintendo consoles are conceived as toys for the general public.
At 60,000 yen, the Switch 2 has blown way past that category, which is a real problem.
Sony and Microsoft's consoles, on the other hand, are more like a hobbyist item aimed at people who are into gaming as a pastime.
Being expensive is still an issue for them, sure, but they're not under nearly the same pressure to stay cheap that Nintendo is.
So since these are fundamentally different kinds of products, comparing them on price alone doesn't really mean much.
53AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:53
Well, as for whether consoles should have avoided a specs race at all — it was inevitable that PCs would eventually become their rivals.
The fact that they managed decent cost-performance while still being able to run the same games as a PC is thanks to all that relentless R&D.
But where everyone except Nintendo went wrong was pouring all their money into specs while neglecting software development and building up their IP brands.
If you're purely chasing specs, where anyone can just pay more to get something better, you'll eventually lose all your added value.

Re: #51
Except it's not selling at all, though.
56AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:55
Re: #54
That's a big step down from the "there's just no stock, no stock" line (a meme phrase, "denai denai," mocking claims that shortages—not weak demand—explained the poor sales), huh.
58AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:57
Re: #56
Too bad it's just not selling at all.
65AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:59
Why does the 60,000-yen Switch 2 keep beating the 50,000-yen PS5 every single week?
69AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:01
Re: #65
It's not even that — it's losing to the previous-gen Switch too.
68AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:00
Re: #62
LOL, you've turned into a bot that just repeats the same line over and over.
71AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:02
Re: #68
LOL, running away from reality — AAA third-party titles are landing on Nintendo platforms and they're just not selling.
92AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:08
Yeah, but that 50,000-yen console is losing to the 60,000-yen one…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “128 Marios at once” claim cited in the thread traces back to a technical demo unveiled at Space World 2000 to showcase the GameCube’s processing power — it was more a demonstration of raw computing capability than marketing rhetoric meant to fuel a specs war. With that in mind, both the argument that “Nintendo used to compete on specs too, so this is rich coming from them now” and the counter-argument that “it was Sony who started the specs war” tend to oversimplify the context of the time. It’s also worth noting that the weekly sales figures and post-price-hike PS5 sales trends cited in the thread are based on 5ch users’ informal observations, not necessarily official aggregated data. Since Nintendo hardware and console/PC-adjacent hardware are built around different assumed user bases and pricing strategies, there are structural differences that a simple side-by-side comparison of specs or price can’t fully capture.
