PlayStation Sell-Off Rumors: 5ch Users Seriously Guess Who’d Buy It

From our other sites

The story

A thread on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked speculation about potential buyers amid growing chatter that Sony’s PlayStation business might be headed for a sale or withdrawal. The evidence cited: plans to drop the disc drive, the abrupt termination of the contract with Kojima Productions, only a small handful of first-party titles planned for the next generation, and a string of stock sales by executives — including CEO Hiroki Totoki and Rob Stringer — since July 2026. Posters floated specific names like Middle Eastern investment funds, Chinese companies, and Samsung, while others argued “they’ll probably just drop hardware and keep the platform” or “no buyer will show up and it’ll just fade away,” leaving the predictions all over the map.

No joke, it really feels like they might pull out or sell, so let's seriously guess who'd buy it
2AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:10
Handing the business off to a joint venture with a Chinese company is a lock
4AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:12
It's nothing but risk at this point — is there really anyone who'd buy it?
5AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:14
A Chinese buyer risks getting shut out of North America, the biggest market, so that makes it a tough sell.
If anyone buys it, a Middle Eastern investment fund seems more likely.
8AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:15
They'll want to keep PSN and the store for themselves, so I bet they fade out instead of actually selling.
13AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:19
Re: #8
Knowing Totokin's (nickname for CEO Totoki) style, he's not the type to just let a bad asset sit there — he'll sell while it's still worth something.
Wait until the next-gen console flops or gets canceled and the valuation drops hard.
9AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:16
Before long, Kepler or MLID (industry leaker/insider accounts) will start claiming Orion and Canis (rumored next-gen console codenames) got canceled — that'll be the signal.
10AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:17
Not happening until Nintendo goes under.
They refuse to admit defeat to a Japanese company of all things.
11AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:18
Nobody wants to buy it, so we end up with the VAIO route (Sony spun its PC business into a standalone company) and 'PlayStation Corporation' is born out of nowhere
14AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:19
Re: #11
That one got bought out by an investment fund lol
12AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:18
People keep bringing up Tencent, but Chinese firms wouldn't touch something that risky.
What's the point buying something you can't even roll out properly back home?
29AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:32
Re: #12
But they did buy Nagoshi's studio.
Then dumped it afterward, though.

Re: #12
People only bring China up because they look down on it.
15AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:20
Granted, now does seem like the best time to sell if they're going to.
16AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:20
The physical hardware business probably can't be sold off the way VAIO (Sony's PC brand) or Bravia (Sony's TV brand) were, since it's basically a customized gaming PC inside.
What a Chinese buyer would actually want is the PlayStation® brand itself (like with VAIO), but it's hard to imagine Sony exiting gaming entirely, so they'd keep the PlayStation® name as a platform.
The studios are too tied to their own identity to be easy to sell off too, so isn't the real plan just repeated layoffs until it quietly fades away 'due to popular demand'?

Re: #16
But it's become a platform that only works because of the hardware — keeping just the platform without hardware would rot fast.
17AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:20
Re: #13
The people at the top just want to be in the network services business, lol
18AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:21
Now's the time for a Nintendo merger
24AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:28
Sony today isn't an electronics maker, it's an entertainment content company.
They've already spun off finance, and about the only major non-content division left is image sensors.
Hard to imagine a content-focused Sony letting go of gaming.

Re: #24
SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) is clearly the odd one out.
Ideally they'd keep all the rights to the hardware while having some other company actually manufacture it.
Offloading the manufacturing risk while maximizing the platform business is the dream scenario.
25AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:28
Feels like it has to be a company that can make its own memory and SSDs at this point.
So, Samsung.
28AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:32
Re: #25
Samsung's been deep in partnership with Xbox for years now.
Their TVs are marketed as Xbox-optimized, and Galaxy phones run Xbox collab ads too.
31AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:33
Sony's earnings just came in great, blowing the doom narrative out of the water, so all that's left is escaping into fantasy.
39AnonymousSep 19, 2026 22:40
Re: #31
Wonder what gets cut next to dress up next quarter's earnings.
54AnonymousSep 19, 2026 23:24
Hmm, let's go with Rudeya! (a nonsensical joke answer, likely a running in-joke on the board)
59AnonymousSep 19, 2026 23:34
Re: #54
😂

This got me lol, I'll throw in a vote too 😂🤣😂
66AnonymousSep 20, 2026 00:21
・Announced they're dropping the disc drive
・Abruptly terminated the contract with Kojima Productions
・The only planned first-party titles are 'the bald guy' and 'the old hag' (dismissive nicknames for specific game protagonists)

With this much solid evidence pointing to withdrawal
there are still idiots out there who think they'll keep doing hardware.

With Microsoft and Nintendo as the competition,
who's going to buy a product with nothing but a losing future ahead of it?

Tencent's fine with PC, so there's no way they buy it —
it'll just quietly wind down production and fade away.

Re: #66
The scariest part is that the executives started dumping their own stock.
84AnonymousSep 20, 2026 02:18
Re: #66
Yeah, exactly — there's no real benefit or reason for them to keep running the platform business themselves.
But for Sony to actually want to sell PlayStation, the brand would have to have already lost a ton of value, so I doubt any deal would come together and they'd actually manage to sell it.

Sony Group executives, including CEO Hiroki Totoki and Rob Stringer, have been selling off their own company stock in a string of moves since July 2026.

・CEO Hiroki Totoki sold roughly ¥800 million worth of company stock
・Rob Stringer sold roughly ¥1.9 billion worth
・Kenji Tanaka sold 20,000 shares

A Chinese company buys it to turn it into a dedicated machine for Chinese gacha games

Re: #77
Wouldn't PC just work fine?
No real need to go out of your way to do that on a PS5 specifically.

Background and Key Points on This Story

This “sale” speculation isn’t an official announcement — it’s simply 5ch users piecing together circumstantial evidence, such as the plan to drop the disc drive, the severed contract with a popular studio, and a thin lineup of upcoming first-party titles, and speculating from there. It’s true that Sony executives have reportedly been selling off their own company stock in a string of moves since July 2026, but executives selling shares they hold is not unusual in itself, and it isn’t direct proof of a struggling business or an impending sale. Posters in the thread were split on their theories — “a Middle Eastern fund is the favorite,” “they’ll drop hardware but keep the platform,” “no buyer will emerge so it just fades away” — without settling on a single conclusion. What readers should keep in mind is that, as of September 2026, Sony has made no official statement about selling or withdrawing from the PlayStation business; this article is simply introducing a prediction game happening on a forum.
