The story

With Nintendo’s new simulation RPG “Fire Emblem: Bansenkou” about to launch, predictions about its Metascore were heating up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (aka “Geha”). No official score has been posted yet, but posters kept measuring it against the PS5-exclusive “Marvel’s Wolverine,” which holds a Metascore of 77. The thread filled up with snark about the internet meme “NBP,” along with a mix of hope and anxiety about the game’s director and writer.

Wolverine's 78 is the bar to clear, I guess
28AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:16
Re: #21
Rude much? It's 77, not 78!
31AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:17
Re: #21
Please stop inflating it by a point.
25AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:14
If it doesn't beat Awakening's 92, it's guaranteed trash.
27AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:16
Re: #25
Wolverine and its 77 — now THAT'S the trash game of the century lol
30AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:16
Honestly, FE's about the only SRPG franchise still standing at this point.
34AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:20
Re: #30
Unicorn Overlord was really well made and fun, though.
33AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:20
It'll probably end up another underwhelming 82, just shy of the "Iwata line" (an informal benchmark score jokingly named after former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata). And that score only works because of NBP's +30 bonus, so it's really a 53 lololol
36AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:21
Re: #33
Meanwhile Wolverine only manages a 77 even with its own +30 "SBP" bonus… lol
40AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:22
Re: #33
The sad part is Wolverine's 77 already includes a +40 "Sony favoritism" bonus… so it's really a 37-point trash game 😭
44AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:23
I'm a little worried about the writer — has that not been announced yet?
61AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:31
Re: #44
The director's Kusakihara, and going by the dialogue shown so far, the vocabulary level is nothing like Komuro's work.
46AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:26
NBP +10

Sony: "Anyone who scores it low is fired!"
51AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:28
Kusakihara + Koei Tecmo gave us Three Houses.
Koei Tecmo alone gave us Three Hopes.
Kusakihara alone gives us Bansenkou.
Bansenkou's quality will tell us once and for all whether Three Houses was just a lucky punch.

Re: #51
What about the Engage guy?
64AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:32
Re: #51
They built it on lessons learned from Three Houses, so you can't really say one way or the other. Also, like with Poke-Poko (likely a nickname for another title Koei Tecmo modeled), Koei Tecmo's character modeling is genuinely excellent.
53AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:28
Xenoshitide 3 (a snarky pun on Xenoblade Chronicles 3) got an 89, remember. NBP is definitely real.
60AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:31
Should I play Three Houses first before this one?
67AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:33
Re: #60
That's rare — jumping into FE for the first time now of all times.
70AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:34
Re: #60
Being serious for a second: I think it's the kind of series where you can start with either one, no problem.
69AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:34
You know what happens if it scores lower than Wolverine, right?
…Piggy? (a derogatory nickname for Nintendo fanboys on this board)
71AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:34
Re: #69
Nothing happens lol
73AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:34
Re: #69
Don't lower the bar.
76AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:36
My serious prediction: 78. Strip out the NBP bonus and it's really more like a 30.
81AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:38
Re: #76
Even at 78, that's still higher than Wolverine, though.
87AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:41
It launches tomorrow and the Metascore still isn't up? Isn't that late?
95AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:45
Re: #87
Don't Nintendo titles usually drop the evening before, Japan time?
89AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:41
Who even are the people predicting scores when there isn't even a demo to go on? Actual grown men acting like children?
91AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:42
Re: #89
Early reviews are already out, you know.
93AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:43
If it comes in under Wolverine's 77, that's a loss.
98AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:47
Re: #93
You're seriously pitting an SRPG against the newest AAA game from one of SIE's ace studios?
97AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:47
Probably lands around 95 thanks to the political-correctness bonus.
102AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:49
Re: #97
So Wolverine — which had Sweet Baby Inc. involved — only gets a 77 even WITH the bonus?
108AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:52
Re: #97
So you're saying Wolverine, with "Sweet Baby" plastered right there in the credits, was actually overrated even at 77?
103AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:49

Boo-Wolverine lol (a jeering pun on "Wolverine")

Re: #103
That's rough. Not acceptable for a game with a budget in the tens of billions of yen.

Background and Key Points

The term “NBP,” which shows up constantly in the thread, is internet slang — a sarcastic coinage implying that Nintendo titles tend to get review scores higher than their content deserves. It’s not an official scoring standard or any real system. The comparison title, “Marvel’s Wolverine,” is a PS5 exclusive with a Metacritic score of 77. Online discussion of game reviews often carries persistent suspicion toward developers’ conduct and reviewers’ standards, rather than focusing on the games themselves, and unverified rumors tend to take on a life of their own in these spaces. This thread, too, is a back-and-forth of hope and anxiety ahead of any official score announcement, and the actual reception after launch may well turn out differently from what’s being predicted here.
