PS5-Exclusive Wolverine’s ‘2 Million in Week One’ Claim Sparks Doubts — 5ch: ‘Isn’t This Just AI-Generated?’

The story

An image circulating on social media claiming that PS5-exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine topped 2 million units sold in its first week set off a firestorm on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (nicknamed “Geha”). What began as ammunition for mocking Switch fans quickly spiraled into a fight over whether the number was even real, as posters pointed out that neither Insomniac nor Sony had made any such announcement and speculated the image itself might be AI-generated. With the game’s development budget reportedly topping 30 billion yen, there was also keen interest in whether it could actually turn a profit.

lol, they were talking so much trash about it and it's selling like crazy anyway
Hope Fire Emblem: Manshisenko can crack 2 million in its first week too

Onimusha — multiplat on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, PC
Nintendo pig: "1 million first week! Thanks to Switch 2!"

Wolverine — PS5 exclusive
Nintendo pig: "2 million first week? Total flop!"

lol

Aren't both of those flops on PS5 though?

That's a flop though

Generally, first-week sales make up a big chunk of total game sales.
First week 5 million → lifetime 12-15 million
First week 1 million → lifetime 4-5 million

Hey, quit trash-talking Wilds!
18AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:42
At $35 a unit, breakeven on a $1 billion(-ish) full-price budget would need 10 million units sold.
There's zero chance of that with just 2 million on day one.

Guaranteed massive flop lmaooooo

Re: #18
It's a first-party title, so the take per unit is higher than that.
For digital sales, you can basically assume close to the full $70 goes straight to them.
88AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:08
Re: #18
How many people are even buying it at full price though lol
35AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:52
Once they drop physical copies starting in '28, I wonder how much these numbers will shrink lol

That's day-one numbers, not first week

Re: #39
I looked for this and couldn't find it anywhere.
Where's it from?
Mind sharing the source?

Re: #39
This one's also clearly slapped together with generative AI.
No announcement from Insomniac or Sony, so it's fake~
62AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:01
Reverse image searched Re: #39 and this popped up
46AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:57
So anyway, is Fire Emblem: Manshisenko — the one nobody's even talking about — gonna sell 2 million?
Maybe you Nintendo boys should worry about your own game instead
48AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:58
Re: #46
Yeah, true, Wolverine's getting way too much buzz lmao
58AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:01
Hey Nintendo boy, your crappy-graphics Fire Emblem can't beat Wolverine — got any excuses?

Crappy graphics?
That 50-billion-yen lava sure looks impressive though

Searched "Wolverine 2 Million" and still nothing comes up
65AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:02
So basically Wolverine got mocked so hard someone got salty and just made up a lie?

According to a leak from Insomniac, if Wolverine doesn't sell 6 million copies in its first 12 months, Marvel may end its long-running partnership with Insomniac and scrap the planned X-Men game.

I think 6 million is achievable. If sales fall short, they'll probably push the game with steep discounts. But with the leaked development budget reportedly at $305 million, even 6 million feels low. The game might need to sell 8-10 million copies before it starts turning a profit. That seems like a stretch.

Is 2 million really going to cut it?

Re: #66
So that's why it looked like they rushed this out
81AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:06
Re: #65
Even if they lied out of frustration,
it's kind of sad they only inflated it to 2 million instead of going all-in with something like 10 million.
Even as wishful thinking, this won't hit the cumulative target from Re: #66
71AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:03
The OP's been stirring up other threads with lies too…
That's just pathetic
74AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:04
Re: #71
Dunno the facts, but I guess they were just happy about it
Even though the quota is 6 million
79AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:06
But seriously, isn't spreading this kind of fake news totally off-limits?
84AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:07
Re: #79
Yeah it's off-limits — it can even move stock prices
80AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:06
Using AI to fake sales numbers is genuinely bad news
86AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:07
Re: #80
Guess PS fanboys are gonna keep spreading AI-faked garbage like this from now on……
90AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:08
Re: #86
Well, if they're gonna cross the line like this, it actually works out in our favor
85AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:07
So even the 2 million number is being called a lie by everyone now lmao
112AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:24
Re: #85
It's less about the 2 million and more that there's no source…

By the way, apparently even 2 million on day one is still less than Spider-Man

113AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:24
Wow.
Going this far just to smear Nintendo?
Someone needs to arrest this guy before he pulls off a terror attack and people end up dead

Re: #113
What do you mean "smear Nintendo"?
Is it "smearing Nintendo" if Wolverine sells 2 million copies?

Background and Points of Contention

On the Hardware/Industry board (“Geha”), comparisons of “first-week sales” routinely spark fights, since the counting method — shipped vs. sold-through, digital included or not — can differ, which often makes the reliability of the numbers themselves the real battleground. Marvel’s Wolverine, the title at the center of this dispute, is reportedly a massive production with a development budget exceeding 30 billion yen, and the thread also cited a leak claiming Marvel could end its partnership with Insomniac and cancel a planned X-Men game if Wolverine fails to sell 6 million copies within 12 months — a detail that only sharpened interest in the sales figures given how high the breakeven point appears to be. Meanwhile, the “2 million in the first week” image that started it all has not been confirmed by any official statement from Insomniac or Sony, and several posters raised suspicions that it may have been fabricated with generative AI. An image of unverified authenticity taking on a life of its own on social media, with discussion running ahead of it as if it were established fact, is a pattern that shows up again and again in online chatter about game sales figures.
