New Wolverine Game Accused of Being a ‘Smear Campaign’ Target — 5ch: ‘This Is What Happens When Conspiracy Thinking Goes Too Far’

From our other sites

The story

Following the release of the new Marvel game “Wolverine,” review scores from major gaming outlets came in low across the board, prompting gaming influencer “Pokaos” to claim on X (formerly Twitter) that “the game may have been review-bombed in a smear campaign by legacy media outlets” — sparking discussion on 5ch’s console-war board. While some pointed to IGN’s score of 60 as evidence, other posters who’d actually played the game pushed back, saying things like “it’s more fun than I expected” and “I’ve got no complaints about the Metacritic score of 77.” Rather than debating the game itself, the thread mostly argued over Pokaos’s credibility, given his track record of alternately praising and bashing Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft — opinions split between those questioning his motives and those defending him.

Wolverine may have been hit with a smear-campaign review bomb from legacy media outlets. This could be the worst thing to happen in gaming history.

Once you actually play it, it stops bothering you. The story explains that it's Wolverine's sense of smell being visualized, and the tracking line doesn't even show up on every stage. The people making noise about this clearly aren't gamers who've actually played it — they're something else entirely, just watching videos and criticizing.
4AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:08
Watched a bit of it — looked like a boring piece of crap.
5AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:08
What's gotten into this guy all of a sudden? Isn't he supposed to trash every PlayStation game no matter what?
8AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:09
Say what you want about old man Pokaos, but at least he's sincere about games — no "never played it" smear campaigns from him.
9AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:11
IGN — the same outlet that gave even Concord a 70 — gave this one a 60??? Clearly a trash game…
10AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:11
Probably payback from outlets still salty about the disc drive being dropped.
12AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:13
As usual, it's multiple major outlets criticizing it, not just one.
13AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:14
Feels like we're gonna get an arrest out of the "Chikanishi" crowd (a slur for anti-Sony Nintendo fanboys) at this rate — way too much smear-campaigning.
14AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:14
Are the outlets even playing on the lowest difficulty?
15AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:15
The type of guy who's basically a nastier version of "Cabbage" (apparent nickname for another gaming personality).
16AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:15
If even this PlayStation hater is admitting it's good, doesn't that make it a masterpiece?
19AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:18
Re: #16
Looks to me like he's just trying to bait more people into buying it and getting disappointed?
39AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:35
Re: #16
Just try it. This is a genuinely great game, rare for recent years. Personally, I actually like that it's not open-world like Spider-Man — if you already know where you're going, getting there fast is just more time-efficient ("tapa").
57AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:54
Re: #16
He's just mocking Sony fanatics. Pokaos plays games on every platform.
17AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:16
What's with this Kirby-looking kaomoji?
18AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:16
Lol, the guy's a hardcore gamer who owns a PS5 Pro.
20AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:21
Weirdly, it's actually the pro-PlayStation crowd who seem unhappy about this.
22AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:24
How many tongues does this guy have? One minute he's praising PlayStation, the next it's Xbox, and vice versa.
23AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:25
Re: #22
He's never once praised PlayStation, idiot.
26AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:28
Is this really "praising" it? 🤔 It clearly looks like he's just trying to rack up more victims for fun — he's toying with people.
32AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:32
It's getting too obvious that all the console-war YouTubers are on Team "Trash-tation" (a mocking nickname for PlayStation), so this guy's just being kept around by Sony ("Chony") as a counterbalance. Case in point: Hachima — turned out Sony was paying them. Forza-sensei — got cut loose by Microsoft. Microsoft is actually the only company with a decent corporate stance, so this whole act is just to water that impression down.

Re: #32
So this is what happens when conspiracy thinking gets out of hand. Is this guy some low-IQ old-timer who used to believe in Nostradamus's doomsday prophecies?
35AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:32
Funny how the bar's been lowered so much that "it's more playable than I expected" now counts as a compliment.
42AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:35
Realistically, it'll probably land somewhere around "not as bad as people said, but not great either."

Re: #35
Wouldn't be surprised if this whole thing was aimed at lowering expectations, lol.
38AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:33
What's up with this guy? He used to be anti-Sony ("Anthony") and pro-Xbox, didn't he?
41AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:35
Re: #38
He never said it was actually fun, though. He's just questioning this smear-campaign review-bombing.
49AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:44
This, lol.
If you're going to frame "legacy media" as the problem, then critique the actual wording of the reviews instead of hiding behind "may have." Stop dodging.
Every one of Pokaos's videos is just clickbait with an inflammatory title, farming views — if anyone's spreading misinformation here, it's you, buddy.
66AnonymousSep 16, 2026 11:18
Re: #49
Because he's a flagship figure on the console-war board, right up there with Mr. Yasuda.
54AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:52
This guy would actually be a decent streamer if he'd just stop slandering other influencers. Sad that in the end, chasing engagement through console-war antics comes first for him.
61AnonymousSep 16, 2026 11:05
Re: #54
He should just stick to game reviews — he's spent way too much time on the console-war board, lol.
55AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:52
Kemai said it's fun, but that they've got no complaints about the Metacritic score of 77.
59AnonymousSep 16, 2026 10:58
Re: #55
He's not anti-Sony — he's just mocking the fanboys and their "guru" for spreading stuff that isn't even true. Pokaos has been saying Ghost of Yotei is fun this whole time.
72AnonymousSep 16, 2026 11:42
So basically they balanced it so that dying to unreasonable multi-enemy attacks is just fine? Guess the low Metascore was right after all?
92AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:01
Re: #72
Nah, you die constantly in this game — you can even die just from falling off a cliff. Enemy guns hit hard, and about 10 enemies show up at once, so if you don't properly use stealth like in Ghost of Tsushima, you'll get sniped to death over and over.
81AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:09
Re: #77
Pokaos even properly played through Saros before reviewing it. That's why he can't stand shills like Keiji who just review sponsored content.
84AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:18
Re: #81
Lol, he's just mad he's not getting any sponsorship deals himself.
100AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:23
He uses Nintendo as a club to bash Sony for clout and cash, but the console Pokaos actually plays the most is the PS5. He only reluctantly buys Switch 2 games for the sake of keeping up appearances, and barely plays them.
101AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:33
Re: #100
Exactly. He's mostly playing on PS5 anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Underlying this story is a tension familiar to the gaming industry: the gap between review scores published by major outlets (aggregated on sites like Metacritic) and how a game actually feels to the people who’ve bought it. The thread cites specific numbers — a Metacritic score of 77, an IGN score of 60 — showing that critics themselves are divided. At the same time, the term “review-bombing” technically refers to an organized effort by a specific group to deliberately tank a score, but no such evidence was presented in this thread; it remains purely one influencer’s personal speculation. As is typical for 5ch’s console-war board, discussion drifted away from the game’s actual quality and toward “which platform is this guy shilling for,” with much of the back-and-forth centered on whether Pokaos’s claims lined up with his past statements. What readers may easily miss is that the thread’s energy was really about the reviewer’s credibility rather than the game’s quality — the game’s actual merits were left unresolved.
