Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct: Fans Predict ‘Way Too Much Movie Time’ Before It Even Airs

The story

Nintendo announced on September 8 that it will stream “The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct 2026.9.8” starting at 23:00. The broadcast runs about 30 minutes, and the official teaser copy includes phrases like “initiatives beyond games” and “details on Ocarina of Time.” On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“gaha”) board, predictions lined up even before the broadcast that a large chunk of the runtime would go to promoting the live-action movie, alongside concerns about exactly that. The unease traces back to a past broadcast where movie coverage reportedly went over poorly, prompting a wave of posts aimed at lowering expectations — while other comments looked forward to the movie itself, and some took the level-headed view that a new Switch2 title probably wouldn’t be announced this time.

Gonna go ahead and lower my expectations now.
2AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:24
It's an anniversary Direct, not a game Direct.
3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:25
Honestly I'm more hyped for the movie than Ocarina of Time.
Sorry, the movie's just been more fun for me lately.
4AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:25
This is shaping up to be a letdown Direct — might as well go to bed.
5AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:26
Let's assume Ocarina of Time just gets a 3-minute trailer or so.
Everything else is probably the movie, the Zelda-edition Switch2, the Pro Controller, and merch.
7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:27
Once the Ocarina of Time part's over I want to crash, but they might pull a 'one more thing' at the very end…
8AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:28
It's a Zelda Direct — of course there's gonna be a ton of movie stuff.
9AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:28
Lowering expectations, nothing — they straight up said "initiatives beyond games" and "details on Ocarina of Time."
10AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:28
Well realistically there's no way all 30 minutes is game news, so the movie and similar topics will eat up a good chunk.
There might also be news about a game music concert or something like that.
12AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:28
Which is worse — this, or a 10-minute voice actor interview segment?
21AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:32
Re: #12
That one at least comes with no warning.
There's a real difference between walking into a haunted-house test of courage on purpose and having some guy in nothing but a coat suddenly flash you — completely different levels of mental bracing required.
13AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:29
But if there's no surprise reveal of a brand new Switch2 title, there's not much point calling it a "Direct" — and not much reason for us to watch either.

We will stream "The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct 2026.9.8" from 23:00 on Tuesday, September 8.
To mark this milestone in the series' 40th anniversary, we'll bring you a variety of information about The Legend of Zelda.
The broadcast will run approximately 30 minutes.

Guess that stunt of basically just running a third-party movie ad last time really left a mark.

Re: #14
Zelda's popular overseas, so they should really be scheduling this around overseas time zones 🥺
15AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:30
Credit where it's due — at least they figured out the movie segment last time was garbage.
16AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:30
Well, when your own sense of superiority matters more to you than public opinion, that's the real hang-up here…
17AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:30
Probably something like: movie 10 min, Ocarina of Time 10 min, merch 5 min, Miyahon (fan nickname for Shigeru Miyamoto) 3 min, Aonuma (Zelda producer) 2 min.
18AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:30
There's a regular Nintendo Direct coming later, so there's no way a new title gets announced here.
Anyone hyping themselves up for that is just being dumb.
19AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:31
Right as the Direct starts, a stunning, almost photorealistic shot of Zelda plays.
Title card slams down: "The Legend of Zelda"!

President: "What you just saw was the latest footage from the live-action Zelda movie!"

That would probably blow up into a controversy… nah, they wouldn't actually pull that, would they…
20AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:31
Re: #19
Everyone already knows there's a Zelda movie — what exactly would blow up about that?
22AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:34
And the other half is just a voice actor roundtable, right?
23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:34
– Movie promo
– Ocarina of Time remake
– Intros for Switch2 editions of Zelda titles that already came out on Switch
– New Classics additions → Four Swords+ and Navi Trackers (a Japan-only GameCube-era Zelda spinoff) get online support
– Closing out with a quick tease of a new Switch2 title

That's roughly how I see it going.
33AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:38
Re: #23
Even if they add online support, it'll probably be friends-only and people will complain about that too.
24AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:34
The movie stuff can stay.
But if there's no actual gameplay footage, it's a letdown.
32AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:36
But they'd better announce a follow-up to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom,
or I won't even know why I bought a Switch2.
34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:38
Re: #32
Isn't it just on you for buying it with nothing to actually play?
40AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:40
Re: #32
Upgrade to the Switch2 edition,
use the extra save slots to start fresh,
and that'll get you your money's worth.
35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:38
At the end of the day they're probably just scared of how the upcoming game news will land.
36AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:38
Re: #35
Because the last one ended in such a mess.
39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:40
Guess getting mocked over the Resident Evil thing stung that badly, huh lol
42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:41
Re: #39
Which just proves they know it wasn't a good look either — so much for that.
46AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:43
They said upfront it's about the movie, though.
However you look at it, that beats getting blindsided with a surprise movie dump.
47AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:44
Re: #46
I guess the real hang-up is having to treat those two as the same thing…
51AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:46
Re: #46
Also don't forget the voice actor interview was the grand finale.
They botched it top to bottom.
61AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:52
Seriously don't need the movie.
Would rather they just showcase Hyrule Warriors instead.
62AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:53
Re: #61
You don't have to watch it live, you know.
65AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:54
Re: #61
It's needed.
It's the thing I'm most looking forward to next year.
Come on, you should start watching movies too.
101AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:30
Wonder what the next movie should be ☺
104AnonymousSep 8, 2026 19:32
Re: #101
How about a movie where the Pikmin secretly work behind the scenes to save a baby?

Background and key points of this story

This “Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct” airs from 23:00 on September 8 and runs about 30 minutes; Nintendo’s advance notice said it would cover “initiatives beyond games” and “details on Ocarina of Time.” The thread is a prediction battle based solely on that teaser wording ahead of the broadcast — it’s worth noting these are not confirmed reports that the actual content ended up half movie promotion. The underlying anxiety comes from a past broadcast (referred to in the thread by the nickname “State of Play”) where live-action movie promotion reportedly ate into the runtime and left a bad impression, and many posts voiced concern about a repeat. At the same time, opinions were split — some looked forward to the movie, others said they’d rather see Hyrule Warriors showcased — and on hopes for a full new Switch2 title reveal, some posters made the level-headed point that since a regular Nintendo Direct is scheduled separately afterward, a new game announcement likely wouldn’t happen here.
