The story
Nintendo announced on September 8 that it will stream “The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct 2026.9.8” starting at 23:00. The broadcast runs about 30 minutes, and the official teaser copy includes phrases like “initiatives beyond games” and “details on Ocarina of Time.” On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“gaha”) board, predictions lined up even before the broadcast that a large chunk of the runtime would go to promoting the live-action movie, alongside concerns about exactly that. The unease traces back to a past broadcast where movie coverage reportedly went over poorly, prompting a wave of posts aimed at lowering expectations — while other comments looked forward to the movie itself, and some took the level-headed view that a new Switch2 title probably wouldn’t be announced this time.
What people said
Sorry, the movie's just been more fun for me lately.
Everything else is probably the movie, the Zelda-edition Switch2, the Pro Controller, and merch.
There might also be news about a game music concert or something like that.
That one at least comes with no warning.
There's a real difference between walking into a haunted-house test of courage on purpose and having some guy in nothing but a coat suddenly flash you — completely different levels of mental bracing required.
To mark this milestone in the series' 40th anniversary, we'll bring you a variety of information about The Legend of Zelda.
The broadcast will run approximately 30 minutes.
Guess that stunt of basically just running a third-party movie ad last time really left a mark.
Zelda's popular overseas, so they should really be scheduling this around overseas time zones 🥺
Anyone hyping themselves up for that is just being dumb.
Title card slams down: "The Legend of Zelda"!
President: "What you just saw was the latest footage from the live-action Zelda movie!"
That would probably blow up into a controversy… nah, they wouldn't actually pull that, would they…
Everyone already knows there's a Zelda movie — what exactly would blow up about that?
– Ocarina of Time remake
– Intros for Switch2 editions of Zelda titles that already came out on Switch
– New Classics additions → Four Swords+ and Navi Trackers (a Japan-only GameCube-era Zelda spinoff) get online support
– Closing out with a quick tease of a new Switch2 title
That's roughly how I see it going.
Even if they add online support, it'll probably be friends-only and people will complain about that too.
But if there's no actual gameplay footage, it's a letdown.
or I won't even know why I bought a Switch2.
Isn't it just on you for buying it with nothing to actually play?
Upgrade to the Switch2 edition,
use the extra save slots to start fresh,
and that'll get you your money's worth.
Because the last one ended in such a mess.
Which just proves they know it wasn't a good look either — so much for that.
However you look at it, that beats getting blindsided with a surprise movie dump.
I guess the real hang-up is having to treat those two as the same thing…
Also don't forget the voice actor interview was the grand finale.
They botched it top to bottom.
Would rather they just showcase Hyrule Warriors instead.
You don't have to watch it live, you know.
It's needed.
It's the thing I'm most looking forward to next year.
Come on, you should start watching movies too.
How about a movie where the Pikmin secretly work behind the scenes to save a baby?
Background and key points of this story
This “Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct” airs from 23:00 on September 8 and runs about 30 minutes; Nintendo’s advance notice said it would cover “initiatives beyond games” and “details on Ocarina of Time.” The thread is a prediction battle based solely on that teaser wording ahead of the broadcast — it’s worth noting these are not confirmed reports that the actual content ended up half movie promotion. The underlying anxiety comes from a past broadcast (referred to in the thread by the nickname “State of Play”) where live-action movie promotion reportedly ate into the runtime and left a bad impression, and many posts voiced concern about a repeat. At the same time, opinions were split — some looked forward to the movie, others said they’d rather see Hyrule Warriors showcased — and on hopes for a full new Switch2 title reveal, some posters made the level-headed point that since a regular Nintendo Direct is scheduled separately afterward, a new game announcement likely wouldn’t happen here.
