New Kochikame Voice Recast for Ryotsu Splits Opinion — 5ch: “No One But Rasal Ishii Could Play Him”

The story

A thread on 5ch’s Nanjyo (Everything Live) board blew up over the recast of Ryotsu Kankichi, the lead of the new anime adaptation of “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo” (Kochikame). Since Rasal Ishii’s portrayal has defined the character for decades, posters flooded in with complaints that the new voice felt off, like “it sounds too cool — it needs more vulgarity.” The discussion soon widened into comparisons with other franchises that have swapped out a lead character’s voice actor, such as Doraemon, Sazae-san, Lupin III, and Crayon Shin-chan, pitting an optimistic camp arguing it’s “just a matter of getting used to it” against critics who countered that “the more you love the original, the harder it is to accept.”

When it comes to Ryotsu, nobody but Rasal Ishii is fit for the role.

Can't even post a YouTube link right, and your brain's gone bald too?

Re: #2
The voice is too cool — it needs some vulgarity.

Re: #2
It might feel weird at first, but you'll get used to it eventually 🥺

Same thing happened with Doraemon's voice, remember? 🥺
19AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:48
Why didn't Kochikame become one of those anime that runs forever, like Sazae-san or Chibi Maruko-chan?
21AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:49
Re: #19
There's more than enough material to draw from — guess they just can't do the really niche jokes anymore?
51AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:03
Re: #19
Because the guy's a cop who gets into brawls and goes on shooting sprees.
20AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:49
You guys were mad when Doraemon's voice changed too, huh.
29AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:53
Re: #20
That one's a national institution that's going to stick around forever.
This one's just going to fade away soon and end up remembered as a failure.
22AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:49
If they were stuck, they should've just left it to Shunsuke Takeuchi.
He pulled off Kenshiro just fine.
That guy's freakishly versatile.
32AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:54
Re: #22
I don't really see the need to make it sound like Rasal Ishii anyway.
43AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:00
Re: #32
Nobody asked what YOU think is necessary lol
50AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:03
Re: #43
Re: #44
You're way too attached to Kochikame lol
I don't think most people care that much, honestly lol
33AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:54
It's not just the voice, the character designs are hard to take too.
The Chief especially looks rough.
37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:55
Re: #33
The Chief's not that bad, actually.
Nakagawa's the one I thought looked the worst.
38AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:55
Lupin's the one that actually pulled this off successfully.
Anyone still complaining about it is just nitpicking.
39AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:57
Re: #38
That's because Lupin kept casting big-name actors.
42AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:59
Isn't this just how it goes? The ones making noise are probably the same people still going on about Doraemon's voice.
44AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:00
Re: #42
Both camps are basically the majority — what do you mean by 'just how it goes'?
67AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:16
Re: #42
Seriously, though.
People losing their minds over 'the voice, the voice' about a mere cartoon is so cringe.
45AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:01
This is probably just some hater of his welfare-policy stuff samefagging (posting under multiple names to fake a consensus).
53AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:04
Re: #45
He's not even popular enough to have haters — it's just that the voice doesn't fit, plain and simple.
56AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:07
His personality's got nothing to do with it — they should've just stuck with Rasal Ishii.
60AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:13
Re: #56
Even setting that aside, he's a sitting politician now.
There's no way that's happening.
64AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:15
Well, now that Rasal Ishii's ended up like that, they can't use him — can't be helped.
68AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:16
Re: #64
Wait, what happened to him?
83AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:29
If they were gonna do it, they should've changed the vibe of the other regular cast too, like Doraemon did.
Since everyone else sounds the same and only Ryotsu changed, it makes it feel even more off.
88AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:35
Re: #83
Probably just couldn't find a voice in the same direction for Ryotsu alone.
94AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:38
Online everyone kept saying it'd probably be Subaru Kimura… and then it turns out to be this?
111AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:53
Re: #94
Honestly, Subaru Kimura would've been better for this.
96AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:41
The most jarring recast since Recoome in Dragon Ball.
99AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:43
Re: #96
Recoome was great though — the hilarious-yet-unsettling way he says 'Vegeta-chaaan~' and all that.
97AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:42
I still haven't gotten used to the new voices for Doraemon, Sazae-san, Lupin, Crayon Shin-chan, or Conan either.
You just shouldn't change the voice of a main character in a beloved national anime.
It's not about whether the new actor is good or fits — the character and the voice are already fused together in your head.

Re: #97
Can't speak for Kochikame, but for kids' anime, bringing in new viewers matters most — the old-timers who keep whining that 'something feels off' aren't even the target audience to begin with.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Recasting a character long voiced by the same actor isn’t unique to Kochikame — it’s happened repeatedly throughout Japanese anime history, from Doraemon (Nobuyo Oyama to Wasabi Mizuta) to Sazae-san and Lupin III. Rasal Ishii’s portrayal defined Ryotsu for decades, but he’s been active in recent years as a local assembly member, and as one poster in the thread pointed out, “he’s a sitting politician now, so there’s no way that’s happening” — meaning there are practical reasons he can no longer easily keep up voice-acting work. Opinions in the thread split between an optimistic camp arguing it’s “just a matter of getting used to it, and it’ll settle down within a few episodes,” and a skeptical camp countering that “the character and the voice are already fused together in your head, so it’s not a question of skill or fit” — a reaction that has recurred with recasts in other long-running anime as well. It’s also worth noting that the thread’s posts never actually confirm who the new voice actor is — the closest thing to an answer is a comment noting that “everyone predicted it’d be Subaru Kimura, but it wasn’t.”
