The story

PS5 expansion SSDs are now priced at ¥101,980 for 2TB and ¥50,980 even for 1TB, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Posters lined up to complain that the prices are absurd for what’s essentially just storage media, with some comparing it to just a few years ago when 2TB external HDDs could be had for around ¥10,000. The thread also pointed out that Nintendo’s Switch 2 microSD Express cards (¥28,980 for 512GB) have seen similarly steep price hikes, underscoring that this isn’t a Sony-specific issue but reflects conditions across the entire memory market.

Next you'll say 'I bought mine back when it was cheap, so I'm fine.'

The PS5 Pro's bundled 2TB SSD…
Isn't this just unworkable at this price?

Re: #5
That's exactly why they've stopped shipping it.

A thread that proves the 🐷 (slang for console fanboys) don't even own a PC

Re: #6
Kioxia via Geo, 'Geo Cicada,' and Bic Camera back in March (nicknames posters use for retailers/deals that kept old prices around) — PC users would remember, since they sold at the old prices the longest.
Still sitting here unopened though.
I also bought a 990 Evo for my PC and never used that one either — just another SSD in the stockpile.

The 2TB HDD I bought for recording used to cost around ¥10,000.

For us commoners, even storage is a hurdle — 'consumer' hardware (a mock-haiku playing on "consumer console")

Things are falling apart left and right.
Feels like humanity's headed for extinction too.

I only play free-to-play games, so I'm safe.

It's seriously just storage media, this is way too expensive.
22AnonymousSep 6, 2026 00:26
Looks like the PS5 console itself is about to get another price hike too.

'Crapstation' (derogatory nickname for the PS5) genuinely never has a single piece of good news.
Even as far as life support goes, this is brutal.
27AnonymousSep 6, 2026 00:32
The 🐷 (Nintendo fanboy) went out of his way to snap a photo in-store just to troll, and still couldn't find anything worse per-GB than this? 😅

That Nintendo official one hasn't even released yet.

The M700 Pro XT 2TB I own is currently going for ¥150,000 at the cheapest on Kakaku.com.

If you're at the point of needing to swap your SSD, maybe fix your indecisiveness first.

Thanks to AI you can churn out illustrations easily now, so just suck it up and pay the ¥100,000.
What are you, some anti-AI dinosaur?

Then don't come crying when they build a data center right next to your house.

Huh?

Bought a 'Cicada' brand (nickname for a budget SSD line) 2TB for under ¥20,000 two years ago lol
Figured if it's just for the PS5, I wouldn't mind if the data got wiped.

Still, prices have gotten way too high now.
71AnonymousSep 6, 2026 05:59
Last year you could still get 4TB for around ¥20,000-something.
That's terrifying.

Re: #71
The HDD hooked up to my Blu-ray recorder is a 4TB junk unit that cost ¥1,800.

Worry about the trash-Switch (mocking nickname for the Switch) that's already stopped selling instead of a PS6 that hasn't even launched yet, trash lol

Genshin Impact: 161GB Honkai: Star Rail: 142GB Wuthering Waves: 124GB = 428GB
Just installing a few Chinese games already eats up all your space.

Re: #99
Both the fanboys and Sony are fine with it as long as Chinese games sell, so no problem at all lol

Background and Key Points on This Story

The underlying cause is a worldwide surge in the price of semiconductor memory such as NAND flash and DRAM. Since 2025, memory market conditions have tightened sharply amid soaring demand from data centers built for generative AI, driving up the raw cost of SSDs and SD cards themselves. Some in the thread pointed to a connection with data center construction, suggesting this isn’t a price hike unique to PS5 but a phenomenon affecting the entire industry. It was also noted that while a PS5 Pro model with a built-in 2TB SSD once existed, it’s no longer being shipped, narrowing the options for securing large storage capacity from the outset. One easy misconception for readers is that ‘Sony is opportunistically hiking prices,’ but Nintendo’s microSD Express Card has seen similar increases, showing this isn’t simply a matter of one company’s business practices.
