The story
A thread has popped up on 5ch’s Love Live! board over “Sports Day,” a fan event being held by “Liella!,” the new group from the Love Live! School Idol Project franchise. The event centers on competitions like a cosplay relay race, a “Love-ka” memory-matching card game, and tug-of-war, and complaints arose over the lack of any live performance segment. What’s more, with the event just a day away, not a single show had sold out — to the point where day-of tickets are even being made available. The thread saw a string of posts estimating attendance based on Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium’s seating capacity, and combined with forecasts of heavy rain on the day of the event, concern over turnout spread.
What people said
・"Love-ka" memory-matching game (a Concentration/pairs-style card game)
・Tug-of-war
What even is this event…
Just the organizers scraping together some pocket change.
Such a waste.
2,409 — "Koi no Tutorial" (Love Tutorial)
2,224 — "AZUNA"
900 × 3 = 2,700
The rest comes down to how many regular fixed seats they can fill, but I doubt this event breaks 5,000 people per show.
Wouldn't be shocked if they lose out in attendance to the "Ikizu Live" 2-day show at Musashino Forest (a snarky nickname some fans use for a rival Love Live! sub-unit's live shows).
No fan service either (fortress-level modest gym uniforms).
Heavy rain in the forecast.
Of course nobody's going.
Sigh…
Anyone who shows up to this would show up no matter what they did.
I bet anyone paying for the upgrade seats for this would go to literally anything as long as they get to see the cast up close.
They'd probably show up even for an event that's just a table and chairs on stage for a chat.
H A N A M I Y A H A T S U N A
Guaranteed sold-out ticket scramble incoming
Better not get your hopes up too high.
Is it because he's a favorite over at Bunka Housou (a Japanese radio station)?
Not saying they've done nothing, but still…
Right after getting plenty of name recognition from big festival appearances and TV spots
With guest support from Aqours and Nijigasaki
Held at a single Tokyo venue
Good access
Capacity slashed hard to make room for the competitions
Surely that's enough to fill it, right?
Their Spotify numbers are dropping instead of climbing, so it was all wasted effort.
[Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium capacity]
Arena: 4,000; 2nd/3rd floor stands: 5,000; max total 9,000.
[Sports Day attendance forecast]
Arena: 10 rows × 30 seats × 3 teams = 1,000
Going by what I'm seeing on X, the stands look 60-80% full, so 3,000-4,000
Combined, I'd guess 4,000-5,000?
I also went to the Shinymas (Shiny Colors) sports festival, and I think this one's turnout is about the same ballpark.
Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium has rentable movable chairs.
The arena works out to 9 rows × 48 seats × 3 teams = 1,300 seats.

Someone's bound to post venue photos, so we can work out actual attendance by taking the max capacity of 6,300 seats (1,300 arena + 5,000 stands) and subtracting the empty ones.
But it's a fan meeting, so isn't it natural there'd be empty seats?
They made it a Sports Day fan meeting instead of a concert specifically to cut costs, so a thin crowd is just par for the course.
↑ This is what a Sports Day should look like.
Those basketball-jersey-style gym clothes from Yuijo's Sports Day scream "ethics guardian" — like the staff personally made sure zero fan service would ever be allowed.
If you're school idols, just do a stage show.
Background and Key Points of This Topic
Sports Day appears to be a fan-meeting-style event planned separately from any live concert, centered on participatory competitions like cosplay and games meant to let fans interact with the cast. The venue is split between limited-capacity “upgrade” (アプグレ) seats and general fixed seating, and posts estimating turnout based on that seating breakdown stood out in the thread. It’s not unusual in itself for tickets to a non-concert event to fail to sell out right away, but some pointed out that a song released the same day had been outpaced by other groups on the charts, and this was taken by some as a reflection of Liella!’s current standing in popularity. On the other hand, since Sports Day was conceived as a fan-interaction event rather than a concert, some in the thread cautioned that it would be hasty to immediately equate empty seats with declining popularity.
