After Short Height, Now It’s “Narrow-Shouldered Men” — 5ch: “This Trend of Bashing Men No Matter What Is Creepy”

From our other sites

The story

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (anything-goes live-TV board), a thread roasting short men gave way to a new target: men with “narrow shoulders.” Posters piled on with claims that shoulder width is purely a matter of bone structure determined by genetics — something no amount of weight training can change — while others argued over the urban legend that swimming as a kid widens your shoulders. The thread also debated who gets the worse deal visually, a short guy with broad shoulders or a tall guy with narrow ones, and brought up the builds of pro baseball players and MMA fighters as examples. At the same time, plenty of replies pushed back, calling out the whole “it’s fine to clown on men’s bodies no matter what” mentality as messed up, and questioning why appearance-shaming is treated as fair game at all.

What people said

My shoulders are 54cm wide, but I'm pushing 40, and my years-without-a-girlfriend streak equals my age.
4AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:25
Quit mocking guys who already feel small enough as it is… 😡😡😡 (a pun: "katami ga hiroi/semai" normally means feeling ashamed/small, playing off "narrow shoulders")
6AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:26
My shoulders are ridiculously broad, but honestly I envy guys with narrow ones — my jackets end up looking like they've got shoulder pads built in even when they don't.
7AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:26
This whole "it's fine to trash on guys no matter what" trend is way too creepy.
63AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:55
Re: #7
Yeah, it really is gross.
9AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:29
Shoulder width comes down to the bone structure you're born with, so no amount of training fixes it. Not that I'd really know.
14AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:31
Re: #9
If you swim since you were a kid your shoulders get wider though.
17AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:31
Re: #14
Kinda hard if your parents never put you in swim lessons.

Re: #14
Re: #17
That's gotta be a myth. I swam from kindergarten at age 5 all the way to 11 and my shoulders are still small.
10AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:29
For pitchers, sloped shoulders are actually better.
11AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:30
So how do you even make them bigger? Pull-ups?
21AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:32
Re: #11
Genetics. Building muscle doesn't change your skeleton.
12AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:30
If I train hard, could I get shoulders as wide as Itoi's? (Yoshio Itoi, NPB outfielder known for his broad build)
19AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:32
Narrow shoulders get all the praise though — if anything, broad ones make you look fat even when you're skinny, so you're screwed either way.
23AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:32
I'm 170cm but have broad shoulders on top of a baby face, so every time I catch my reflection I get a split-second "ugh, gross" moment.
27AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:34
Between short-with-broad-shoulders and tall-with-narrow-shoulders, the former gets mocked more, so height really is king after all.
28AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:34
Re: #27
I mean, the former just looks like it wrecks your whole proportions.
32AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:36
Seeing pro baseball players up close, their shoulders are no joke. Even Yamato (NPB infielder) had crazy-broad shoulders. Guys like Yoda (NPB pitcher) are probably so wide you can't even see their other shoulder from the front.
34AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:38
Re: #32
BS, I've seen them in person — Chikamoto and Nakano don't have broad shoulders at all. Sato and Morishita, though, had incredible shoulders.
33AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:37
The "swimming widens your shoulders" thing is a myth. Training doesn't widen them either — it's all down to your original bone structure.
44AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:41
Re: #33
It's probably just survivorship bias — the ones who stick with swimming long-term tend to already have broad shoulders.
42AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:41
Re: #1's example aside, don't you think fixing your posture like this can at least make it look better?
86AnonymousOct 6, 2026 20:06
Re: #42
Just pulling your shoulders back makes your chest look bigger. Apparently backstroke swimmers tend to have their shoulders set further back.
51AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:46
Pretty much every Japanese guy has narrow shoulders anyway.
53AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:49
Re: #51
What about someone like Mikuru Asakura then? (popular MMA fighter)

I genuinely think Mikuru Asakura has the best body in Japan, but is that a no-go by this board's standards? Are his shoulders too wide?

Even if your shoulders got wider while you were swimming during your growth years,

there's no evidence establishing a causal link like "swimming literally widened the bone structure of the shoulders."

Changes in shoulder width during growth are mainly due to:

* Natural growth of the skeleton — collarbones, shoulder blades, etc.
* Overall development of height and build
* Physical maturation driven by sex hormones

What swimming can do, on the other hand, is develop the muscles of the shoulders, back, and chest, which makes the shoulder area look bigger as a result.

That said, to be precise on one point: it wouldn't be accurate to flatly claim "swimming's effect is absolutely zero." Exercise habits during the growth years could plausibly have some influence on physical development.

But the commonly repeated idea that

"swimming as a kid skeletally widens your shoulders"

is safe to say isn't supported scientifically.

Re: #62
This kind of AI-speak phrasing pisses me off.
67AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:57
Thinking about it, women have it so easy when it comes to appearance standards. They're never judged on stuff like height or shoulder width that you can't do anything about skeletally, unlike men.

Re: #67
All you need is to be young — that's a condition with a 100% clear rate.
69AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:58
I envy guys with broad shoulders — even if they're a bit chubby, they still look solidly built.
71AnonymousOct 6, 2026 19:59
Re: #69
True that. They also tend to get guessed as taller than they actually are.
81AnonymousOct 6, 2026 20:04
Guess this is where Yoda-chan finally gets some credit.
85AnonymousOct 6, 2026 20:05
Re: #1 just has a well-developed trapezius, which makes it look like sloped shoulders. Soccer player Hulk is the same way.
87AnonymousOct 6, 2026 20:06
Re: #85
Lol, soccer players, gross.
104AnonymousOct 6, 2026 20:26
Actor Mackenyu's body is just too cool.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Shoulder width is governed mainly by the length of the collarbones and shoulder blades, and is generally considered a matter of bone structure — strength training can’t change the actual length of the bones themselves. The thread saw plenty of talk about the popular belief that “swimming widens your shoulders,” but that claim tends to conflate two different things: muscles like the lats and traps developing and making the shoulder area merely look bigger, versus an actual change in bone structure. The fact that shoulder width became a new target for body-shaming, following on from height, reflects a broader trend of online appearance-related topics constantly shifting to a new target. Some posters in the thread pushed back against the very premise that “anything goes when it comes to criticizing men’s bodies” — and the tendency for this kind of body-shaming to skew toward men is a point worth not overlooking when reading this thread.
