The story
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on October 6 that seven countries/regions — India, Qatar, Germany, Hungary, South Korea, South Africa, and Turkey — have entered the first stage, “Continuous Dialogue,” in the selection process for host of the 2036 Summer Olympics. Applications close at the end of this month, candidates will give online presentations in November, and by next March the field will be narrowed down to move into the second stage, “Targeted Dialogue.” On 5ch, many comments questioned whether these countries can actually pull off hosting the Games at all — citing extreme heat and security worries in India and Qatar, Turkey’s weak currency, and South Africa’s finances — while others pointed to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics (held in October) as a reason to reconsider when the Games are scheduled.

What people said
Why not just move it to autumn?
They used to hold it in autumn — the 1964 Tokyo Olympics' opening ceremony was October 10.
For reference, Tokyo on October 10, 1964 had a high of 20.9°C, a low of 12.2°C, average 15.9°C.
Today's average for October 10 in Tokyo (1991–2020 average) is a high of 23.0°C, low 16.0°C, average 19.1°C.
If not Turkey, then Germany.
All comes down to money?
Sorry, but somewhere like India would be brutal both for the athletes competing and for anyone traveling there to cheer them on.
If they held it up around the Himalayas it'd probably stay nice and cool.
Guess it's off to Istanbul for the high jump (a play on the Japanese song "Fly to Istanbul," since high jump also involves "flying").
Before that, Israel and Iran need to agree to a ceasefire anyway.
I kind of want to see that, so give it to Turkey.
Turkey's in rough shape with its weak currency, so that's probably not happening.
Depending on the route, the torch relay could end up pretty short! (the poster typed "confectionery relay" — a homophone typo for "torch relay")
They'll probably just hold everything indoors.
If it goes to Qatar, there'd be a ton of events they simply couldn't hold. They're only in the running because they've got cash — realistically, actually hosting it would be tough.
Qatar's case, though — they moved it to winter.
Though who knows if I'll even be alive at 89 by then, lol.
Honestly at this point it wouldn't even be weird if I went to sleep tonight and just didn't wake up tomorrow lol
Something like the triathlon would probably rack up casualties.
Can they even hold river-based events there in the first place?
With the Strait of Hormuz situation still unresolved, Qatar's going to be the first one eliminated.
Well, realistically it's a non-starter for now — holding it in winter would be tough given US broadcast scheduling too.
The vuvuzela
I've still got my cheer horn hanging on my wall.
South Africa doesn't have the money though.
40°C is basically the baseline, and depending on the location it can hit around 47°C.
Foreign media's been treating India or Qatar as the favorites for a while now.
Background and Key Points on This Story
Since 2017 the IOC has moved away from a single up-or-down vote on one candidate city, instead narrowing the field through staged “Continuous Dialogue” followed by “Targeted Dialogue.” The seven countries named here have only just reached the first entry point, and many are likely to be eliminated along the way. Worries about extreme heat aren’t unique to India or Qatar, either — the structural nature of the problem shows up in cases like the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships, where the marathon had to be moved to the middle of the night, and the Qatar World Cup’s switch to a winter schedule. At the same time, the timing of the Summer Olympics is locked in by Northern Hemisphere school calendars and broadcasting contracts, which makes a shift to an autumn Games like the 1964 Tokyo Olympics unrealistic in practice. The final host decision is still years away, so much of the reaction in this thread amounts to jumping ahead to grade an answer before the test is even over.
