The story
A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board arguing that bad news about the PS5 has been hitting one after another. Over the past few months there’s been a steady stream of stories about Sony’s game division — developer layoffs, the split between Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), and more. In the thread, posters noted that while the earnings figures themselves look solid, there seems to be a gap between those numbers and the actual mood on the ground, and debated whether media and users react differently to bad news of the same scale depending on whether it’s Nintendo or Sony.
Not linking the URL, but apparently the Keiji Channel is saying the same thing

What people said
The drop in dev power from all these layoffs won't really show its effects until much later, and the PS5 is about due for the end of its hardware lifespan anyway.
Once a huge game like GTA drops this late in a console's life, there's nowhere to go but down from there.
The whole world's about to hit the state Japan was in after Monster Hunter (i.e., once the big system-seller has come and gone, what's left to move hardware?).
Realistically it's just a decade's worth of screwups finally coming home to roost
It's not like the media is ganging up to attack them.
Though well, the actual earnings and hardware momentum don't change either way
What are you talking about — Nintendo got absolutely hammered for ages too, that's exactly how this whole Direct thing got started
That GTA might turn out to be a trainwreck too, you know
Don't you dare disrespect this masterpiece running at 1440p/30fps with forced motion blur (sarcasm — mocking a technically underwhelming 'great game')
They even papered over the stock plunge right after the last Nintendo Direct.
Well, maybe that kind of coddling is exactly why there's so little sense of crisis
Huh? It's not like it's Sony — this stuff gets reported immediately lol

They're already disliked overseas to begin with
But it always gets put out fast like nothing ever happened. Same cycle every time
A stock drop doesn't even become news unless it's Nintendo
The worst part is the political-correctness push stays while the creators just keep disappearing one after another
These past three and a half months have been absolutely wild…
You'd want to think so, but the numbers coming out in the earnings reports are just too strong.
That's what creates the gap with how things actually feel, and it just doesn't add up
Question is where both companies go from here.
Nintendo took a hit from rising memory prices, but with more third-party titles coming aboard, it looks stable.
Who's saying Xbox games are worse than PlayStation first-party? Xbox first-party is stacked with great titles —
Gears with Wolverine alone crushes it
Doing well doesn't mean they won't do layoffs.
Have you not noticed Hitachi's been doing exactly that for over ten years?
That's the same Keiji whose emotional dam burst over the Kojima–SIE breakup incident
Dropping the disc drive and then the Kojima Productions cancellation — they had to know that would draw hate.
Maybe the thinking is it's better to squeeze all the bad pus out at once.
They probably just want to clean house and move on to the next thing quickly.
If they were going to do it anyway, they could've bundled it all together in mid-December after GTA6 launched.
Why do it before GTA6, lol
You guys don't even own a PS5 but you sure know a lot about the PlayStation scene
You don't know the Guru?
Heathen.
Bow down to the Guru.
Background and Key Points of This Topic
The games industry has seen a wave of global workforce cuts since around 2023, and it’s not unusual for major publishers to carry out large-scale layoffs even when their earnings figures look solid. Rising development costs and heavy reliance on big-budget titles are considered the underlying causes. One point debated in the thread was the claim that media and users react with different intensity to comparable bad news depending on whether it involves Nintendo or Sony — though it’s worth noting this reflects a subjective impression rather than any actual tally of coverage volume. Some voices also expressed concern about the PS6’s future, but as of this writing the current-generation PS5 is still in production and on sale, and no concrete announcement about a next-generation console had been made.
